The empty tomb is God’s decisive answer to death, proving that evil, despair, and every force that seeks to consume us do not have the final word. Because Christ is risen, we are invited to live with courage, hope, and holy confidence. The resurrection is not only a promise for eternity, but also a present reality that empowers us with the truth that darkness will not win the day.

The Word of God is both the source and sustainer of all light. From the beginning, God’s Word spoke creation into existence, separating light from darkness and establishing divine order in a chaotic world. In the Gospel of John, this same Word is revealed as Jesus Christ—the living expression of God’s truth and grace—who entered a dark and broken world to bring life and illumination to all who believe. The message emphasizes that darkness, whether spiritual, emotional, or moral, cannot overcome the light of Christ. Even when the world seems darkened by evil or uncertainty, the light continues to shine, unyielding and victorious.

He taught us that true righteousness flows from love, mercy, and inner transformation rather than just legalistic adherence to rules.

The biblical narrative is, in many ways, a chronicle of crisis. From the flood to the exile, Scripture was forged in catastrophe. The prophets emerged not in prosperity but in moral collapse and political ruin. The psalms of lament outnumber songs of celebration, born from raw suffering. Even the New Testament centers on the execution of an innocent man and persecution of his followers. What we hold as sacred text was often written by people whose worlds had fallen apart—shaped not despite disaster and dysfunction, but because of it. The Bible is less a manual for avoiding hardship and more a testament to finding God within it.

Priscilla may not be a prominent figure in the New Testament, yet her steady, faithful partnership helped shape the early church in profound ways. Her story may just change how we see our own role in God’s work.
Rev. Karen Taylor retired after twenty-four years of full-time ministry in the United Methodist Church, finishing her last seven years as Associate Pastor at JCFUMC. Retirement has given her space to enjoy home projects and a bit of travel. This July, she will return to part-time ministry as the Episcopal Services and Clergy Care Administrator for the Missouri Annual Conference. Karen is married to Jim, and they have one son, Jonathan.

The story of Ruth invites us into a deeper understanding of God's loyal love for us and how that love compels us to care more deeply for those around us. Inspired by the stories of women on the margins of society, we discover how God often uses the least expected to show the world the way of love.
Mindy, along with her husband Chris and their four children, are members here at JCFUMC. After earning bachelor's degrees in Bible and Youth Ministry, Mindy and Chris served for many years in ministry spaces within evangelical circles. Today, Mindy homeschools their children, leads a ministry that builds bridges and sisterhood with women in the sex industry, and advocates for social justice both online and in her community.
A pastor at heart, Mindy desires to see the church represent Jesus through costly love. She is currently a certified candidate for clergy within the United Methodist Church and is discerning her path toward licensing or seminary. Mindy is deeply grateful for how invitational and healing our church community has been to her and her family.

I am a proud Housemom to 4 boys at St. Nicholas Academy ages 10-16, Iva who is 2, and baby Zion who is a month old! I love gardens, birdwatching, and zoos. And, as most of you know, I'm wife to Kyrell. Mom roles come in so many shapes and sizes. Some Moms are remembered as incredible and others are not. No matter how this day passes for you, I pray that God provides you the comfort, love, and joy that is a part of a Mother's Kingdom work. And to all of the Mother figures, I see you, your role is Kingdom work, may God uplift you today and may you be celebrated!

“Requiem for the Living is a choral composition in five movements by Dan Forrest, completed in 2013, an extended setting of the Requiem, scored for boy soprano, soprano, choir and orchestra. The Latin text that Forrest set combines sections from the Requiem with biblical texts from Ecclesiastes and the Book of Job. The composition was published by Hinshaw Music, including versions for smaller instrumental groups. It has been performed internationally.”

Jesus Heals a Centurion’s Slave
7 After Jesus[a] had finished all his sayings in the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum. 2 A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly and who was ill and close to death. 3 When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. 4 When they came to Jesus, they appealed to him earnestly, saying, “He is worthy to have you do this for him, 5 for he loves our people, and it is he who built our synagogue for us.” 6 And Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof; 7 therefore I did not presume to come to you. We concluded our journey with Jonah this weekend in the following passage:
Jonah’s Anger
4 But this was very displeasing to Jonah, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord and said, “O Lord! Is not this what I said while I was still in my own country? That is why I fled to Tarshish at the beginning, for I knew that you are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger, abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from punishment. 3 And now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live.” 4 And the Lord said, “Is it right for you to be angry?” 5 Then Jonah went out of the city and sat down east of the city and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, waiting to see what would become of the city.

"6 When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, removed his robe, covered himself with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. 7 Then he had a proclamation made in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: No human or animal, no herd or flock, shall taste anything. They shall not feed, nor shall they drink water. 8 Humans and animals shall be covered with sackcloth, and they shall cry mightily to God. All shall turn from their evil ways and from the violence that is in their hands. 9 Who knows? God may relent and change his mind; he may turn from his fierce anger, so that we do not perish.” - Jonah 3:6-9

Today's sermon picks up on Jonah's story in the belly of the whale when he prays to God:
“I called to the Lord out of my distress, and he answered me; out of the belly of Sheol I cried, and you heard my voice. 3 You cast me into the deep, into the heart of the seas, and the flood surrounded me; all your waves and your billows passed over me. 4 Then I said, ‘I am driven away from your sight; how[a] shall I look again upon your holy temple?’ 5 The waters closed in over me; the deep surrounded me; weeds were wrapped around my head 6 at the roots of the mountains. I went down to the land whose bars closed upon me forever; yet you brought up my life from the Pit, O Lord my God. 7 As my life was ebbing away, I remembered the Lord, and my prayer came to you, into your holy temple. 8 Those who worship vain idols forsake their true loyalty. 9 But I with the voice of thanksgiving will sacrifice to you; what I have vowed I will pay. Deliverance belongs to the Lord!”

Running Away
Today's sermon is all about what happens when, like Jonah, we hear God's call and decide to do the opposite instead.
Scripture Reading:
Jonah Tries to Run Away from God 1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai, saying, 2 “Go at once to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it, for their wickedness has come up before me.” 3 But Jonah set out to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid his fare and went on board, to go with them to Tarshish, away from the presence of the Lord.
4 But the Lord hurled a great wind upon the sea, and such a mighty storm came upon the sea that the ship threatened to break up. 5 Then the sailors were afraid, and each cried to his god. They threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. Jonah, meanwhile, had gone down into the hold of the ship and had lain down and was fast asleep. 6 The captain came and said to him, “What are you doing sound asleep? Get up; call on your god! Perhaps the god will spare us a thought so that we do not perish.”

There is some level of grief surrounding this for all of us.
However, if we remember the first Christmas, we will remember that it was also a time when God did something that hadn’t been done before. A tradition we have come to rely on, at its origin, was an utterly unique and disrupting experience for the people who experienced that first Christmas.
This Advent season, we will tell the Christmas story for the marvel that it is. It was a bold, courageous act of God that demonstrated his love for us in a powerful and vivid way. God disrupted Mary and Joseph’s lives on that first Christmas, and, perhaps it is when our lives are disrupted that we experience God most vividly.

Peter's redemption moment. After all he has been through Peter gets to be forgiven, and set free to feed Jesus' sheep, even if they are grazing on his own lawn.
Peter, who deeply loved Jesus, could either be a stumbling block or a cornerstone. Just like him, do we love Jesus or do we love the idea of Jesus?
Courage can be fickle. It can emerge quickly and go away just as fast. Peter was the only disciple to walk on Water, but he had to trust Jesus would see him through. Moreso, Peter was also the only one who recognized Jesus by being called out into the water. The rest only believed when the storm calmed.
We are all called to follow Jesus. Peter didn't quite know what he was getting himself into either. We are called to be fishermen of people, not programs, not institutions, not traditions, but people.
