Pastor Jon Akin explores what it truly means to know and follow God, not just seeking after His blessings, or creating a false god for ourselves. From God’s glory and holiness to the justice and mercy displayed on the cross, Pastor Jon points us to Jesus as the only way sinners can be made right with God. Let us move forward from this Sunday with greater repentance, worship, and devotion to the most important relationship of our lives!
What does it actually mean to worship an idol in the modern world? We might picture ancient statues or pagan rituals, but Exodus 32 pulls back the curtain on something far more familiar. The story of Israel and the golden calf reveals that idolatry is not about abandoning belief in God altogether -- it is about reshaping Him into something we can control, something that works on our timetable, something that never challenges or corrects us. The Israelites did not stop worshiping; they simply redirected that worship toward a god of their own making. And if we are honest, we do the same thing. Whatever we fear losing the most, seek approval from the most, or sacrifice the most for -- that is our functional god. This message invites us to hold up a mirror and ask whether the Jesus we follow is the real one, or a version we have quietly crafted in our own image. The spiritual stakes could not be higher, because as the Psalms remind us, we become like what we worship.
What if the most familiar parable in the Bible has been misnamed all along? Luke 15 gives us what many call the parable of the prodigal son, but a closer look reveals that the real center of the story is not a wayward younger brother or a resentful older one. It is a father whose love knows no conditions and no limits. The word 'father' appears no fewer than twelve times in the passage, and that repetition is not accidental. This sermon invites us to see the story through fresh eyes, recognizing that both brothers are lost in their own way. One is lost in reckless living, the other in self-righteous religion. Both need the same thing: a father who runs toward them rather than away. The spiritual insight here cuts deep. Sin makes us selfish, foolish, and desperate, but it never puts us beyond the reach of grace. The moment the younger son 'came to himself' in the pig pen is one of the most vivid pictures of genuine repentance in all of Scripture. And the father's response, running while the son is still a long way off, reminds us that God is always the one who takes the initiative. If we have ever felt too far gone to come home, this passage speaks directly to that fear and dismantles it completely.
Pastor Jon began the final part of our series on the book of Exodus! In these last chapters, we see how God chooses to be with His people and connect with them. Walking us through the stories of building the tabernacle and the ark of the covenant, Pastor Jon related these important structures to Jesus. Listen and be reminded that our hope comes from knowing God wants to make our broken world whole again. What a blessing that, as we wait for the day when we’ll be with Him forever, God has given us clear instructions for how to live right now!
Pastor Jon Akin takes a pause on our series through Exodus as we celebrate our country’s Independence Day. He teaches us through Jeremiah 29:1-14 that God’s plan for our lives should be a light for the Kingdom of Heaven. What a relief it is to know that God’s fulfilled promise to bring his people out of the Babylonian Exile leaves us assured that He will fulfill his promise to bring us to our heavenly home one day, too. Pastor Jon leaves us encouraged to love others well because “as citizens of the kingdom of God, we should seek to bless the United States of America.”
