Wedding photographer and fine art creative Koko King doesn’t believe in “just showing up.” In this episode of The Retake, we unpack what it actually means to bring editorial energy to a wedding day — from sculpting light and building sets, to planning portrait windows with intention and knowing when to push a concept further.

Koko shares how her unconventional path — from tattoo artist to bodybuilder to makeup artist — shaped her eye for texture, movement, and form. We talk about reinvesting in the wedding experience, refusing to shoot on autopilot, and creating editorial wedding photography that feels cinematic, cohesive, and built to outlive the day itself.

If your wedding photography has started to feel repetitive — or if you’re craving work that feels more artful, intentional, and creatively alive — this conversation will challenge how you think about the wedding day.

James Broadbent, CEO of Narrative Select, joins me on the show today to talk about all things AI. We dive into the good, the weird, the complicated, and the ambiguous as I pick his brains about the impact of AI on the photography industry. Our community has been buzzing with conversations about this digital revolution lately, so it feels fitting to finally be able to sit down with someone in this world and really get into some of the big questions bouncing around. Previously an international wedding photographer, James has personally lived through all the pain points of being a photographer. Frustrated with how much time he spent behind the computer instead of on a shoot, he created Narrative Select – a predictive AI software – to help photographers cut down on culling time so they can get back to doing what they love. Regardless of how you feel about it, AI is already in our lives, and it feels inevitable that we’ll rely on it more and more to complete our daily tasks. Don’t know how you feel about it? Stephanie Fisher, AKA From the Daisies, is a super talented, world-class wedding photographer with a passion for connection and an editorial eye. Today, we get into the mystifying world of advertising for photographers. I asked her questions like, “Where do you buy ads? How do you get them? Is there a way of making sure your money is having an impact?” Having bounced around from Illinois to Colorado, New York to California, she’s had to build and rebuild a client base after every relocation and creating ads for herself has helped her find work wherever she goes. And although this was originally meant to be a conversation strictly about ads and marketing, I couldn’t help but ask her about her photography, too! Obviously. Because scrolling through her feed, it’s easy to lose track of time and get sucked into her stunning world of beautiful images and emotive stories. In this episode, we talk about how to create your first ad, what the pros and cons are of paid advertising, how to attract clients who trust you, and why she got summoned to the Judge Judy courtroom once upon a time. Kaley Kocinski, or Kaley from Kansas, as you may know her, is a wedding, elopement, engagement, editorial, and family photographer. Based on how many different types of sessions she does, you wouldn’t think she has a specialty… but she does. Kaley specializes in slow and intentional photography. Her focus is on human connection, light, and perspective.

A quick browse of her work reveals a distinct style that’s been honed over years of welcoming new challenges, trying everything, and never letting herself get bored. She studied photography at university, started out shooting still lives for assignments, worked in retail for a bit, and eventually got booked for a friends’ wedding. The rest, as they say, is history. With a little bit of encouragement from her partner, she returned from their epic Scotland wedding with a fire under her bum and a readiness to bring her brand, Kaley from Kansas, into the world more fully. Already a successful wedding photographer in her own right, this spark of inspiration pulled together her love for design, minimalism, styling, and artful honest connection in a way that continues to inform what she does today.

In this episode, we dive into how she communicates such a distinct style across genres, where she finds her inspiration, and how she keeps the creative fire within burning bright.

Today, we’re doing something a little different. Instead of the regular programming of tangible tips from fellow photographers, we’re diving a little deeper into the world of your own consciousness.

The reason for this is because we see so many newbie photographers lose sight of who they are in the chaos of turning their passion into their dream businesses. When you’re just starting out, it’s easy to feel unsure of yourself. There’s so much pressure from external and internal expectations, but you shouldn’t have to change yourself to be liked.

In this episode, we’re joined by Greer Stening – a Human Design coach on a mission to help people feel less stressed, be kinder to themselves, and more connected to who they are at their core. Human design is a system that decodes how we were built and gives us information about how to live as your true self.

Hopefully, after listening to this, you might start to be able to understand a little bit more about how you’re hardwired as an individual and be kinder to yourself – it’s time we all rewrite the mental stories we have about how we can’t be ourselves. The world needs us to do it.

Cheryl Kitchener, the founder of the Unscripted Posing App, is a busy mom, wife, Groodle owner, perpetual renovator, and now business owner/app creator. In this episode, we talk about how a simple desire to solve her own posing problem has ended up being the driving force behind encouraging others to get out there and capture real, honest memories for their clients and break down the actual difference between posing and prompting. Often featured on our feed and in the Unscripted App for Photographers, Marina Williams is a Utah-based portrait photographer making a name for herself on and off social media. During lockdown, she was left without subjects to photograph and locations to shoot them in – forcing her to turn the camera on herself.

Spontaneous and resourceful by nature, she took a less-than-perfect scenario and used it to drive her creativity in different directions. Using bed sheets as backdrops and the glass from picture frames as light modifiers, she learned about the art of self-portraiture and the importance of slowing down.

Lauren Phillips of Love Her Wild Photography built her business on survival. Young, sleeping on friends’ couches, cleaning toilets, and needing to support her daughter, she created a Go Fund Me page to buy her first camera. Fast forward seven years and she’s at the helm of an incredibly successful business, with clients who fly her all over the world for her signature brand of vintage vulnerability. In turn, she creates the kind of work that is a perfect antidote to the airbrushed perfection we often see on our feeds these days - a treasure trove of moments where everybody can see their life reflected back to them in the most beautifully imperfect way.

In this episode, Lauren talks to us about the importance of breaking the rules, taking photos for yourself, and how all of the wonderful and difficult moments of her life bring her closer to her clients.
