Creativity. What happens in that charmed moment when a genius song, painting, book or film is born? On The Brainwave Podcast, Gail Hulnick interviews writers, composers, artists, designers, entrepreneurs, and others about how, when, where, and why they fell in love with an idea; what they did to spark it; and what they did next.
Accomplished photographer, author, poet, philosopher Janet Sternburg now makes her home in Mexico and she has turned her observant, artistic photographer's eye to objects and scenes she's discovered around her. With comments from a local friend, Jose Alberto Romero Romano, she has created a stunning, hard cover book in English and in Mexican Spanish that takes the viewer into corners and up to vistas of Mexico.

"Write what you know." That's one of the most familiar and common pieces of writing advice -- I probably heard it a hundred times when I was first starting out as a novelist.
There is a new book titled Write What You Don't Know and its co-author, Allegra Huston, is an intriguing woman who began her own writing journey with a memoir, titled Love Child, and has since written other books that include a novel and nonfiction resources for editing and writing. Allegra's editing career included working with Booker and Nobel Prize-winning authors, and her teaching career has recently put her at the Iowa Writers' Workshop giving a Master class to graduate students.
In this interview, we discuss the beginning of her desire to write her memoir, her thoughts on stoking and weathering the "imaginative storm", and why writers should stretch to write what they don't know.

The Invisible House is an amazing example of architecture as art. Tomas Osinski, a frequent colleague of legendary architect Frank Gehry, designed and completed The Invisible House in a close consultation with the client/owner in 2019. Since then, it's drawn rave reviews from guests on airbnb and dropped jaws from motorists passing by on the highway.
Another of Tomas' recent creations is the first-of-its-kind, stainless-steel-woven tapestry that is part of the Frank Gehry-designed Eisenhower Memorial, opened on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in September 2020.

Frank Irving and Bill Long have known each other since childhood. A couple of years ago they decided to write a novel together; it was a first-time experience for both of them. Gail spoke with them about the beginnings of the project, the challenges of getting it done during the pandemic, and their advice for people who want to write a novel.

Sometimes, the idea for a nonfiction book appears slowly from a series of observations or experiences, like a steady drizzle. Sometimes, it refuses to arrive, like a refreshing rain needed in the midst of a drought.Â
But sometimes, it is the downpour that fills up all the barrels and pails, and keeps everything healthy and growing.
That was David Stone's experience when he got the idea to write a book to help people with their fear and anxiety.Â

Evan Stern travels the backroads of Texas, collecting interviews for a podcast called Vanishing Postcards. An audio glimpse of an old-time dance hall, a roadhouse, a fruit stand where they sell some of the best peaches in the world --- he makes the recording, then weaves in snatches of it with his own observations and comments., It's oral history in the place where he grew up. He's a New Yorker now but he's rediscovering his home state for his podcast -- and he has plans to explore Oklahoma and Route 66 next.
Gail caught up with him via Zoom in his hometown of Austin.

Author Arjay Lewis wrote a book titled "The Muse", one of fifteen novels he's published during a career that's generated thirty-two writing awards ... so far. One of his own "charmed moments" came when he wrote a book called "The Dark", and the inspiration came by way of Stephen King. He describes that creative spark and then shares his thoughts on the nature of creativity, the habits that keep the ideas flowing, the value he's found in following Julia Cameron's advice in her book The Artist's Way, and his tips for editing and revising fiction.
