Global Frequencies
This Podcast is a new initiative for the Association for New Canadians (ANC). Global Frequencies is a podcast devoted to embracing cultural diversity and ensuring newcomer inclusion in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
This Program is a partnership between ANC (Association for New Canadians and CHMR FM with funding from the Community Radio Fund of Canada (CRFC) - Atlantic Canada's Opportunities Agency, and the Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism.
The Global Frequencies 2023 season begins with a focus on the Western Region office in Corner Brook. On this podcast, we welcome Rabbi Chanan Chernitsky - the only Rabbi in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Director of Chabad of Newfoundland. He shares with us his life story - growing up in a secular Jewish family in Argentina, migrating to Canada, and connecting more deeply to the Jewish faith. We learn about the history of Hanukkah, Jewish communities in NL, and significant traditions. The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women will mark the launch of the UNiTE campaign (Nov 25- Dec 10) — an initiative of 16 days of activism concluding on the day commemorating International Human Rights Day. On this episode of Global Frequencies, we sat with ANC’s Geraldine Ankrah - Project Coordinator of SEA (Support Empower Access). She walks us through the shocking still-existing prevalence of gender-based abuse and violence, in particular, how refugee and migrant women are at an increased risk and what we can do about it here at home.

On this Episode of Global Frequencies, we celebrate Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights. Although Diwali was first celebrated in South Asia, it is now celebrated by people around the world. It generally lasts for five days and is usually observed around the end of October to November, following the lunar calendar. Our host Renata Lang talked with Mini Nair - President of the India Association and Owner & Operator of Mini's family childcare centre.
Mini Nair shared her stories celebrating Diwali and the spirit of Diwali on this podcast.
Sharing Our Cultures was established in 1999 by Dr. Lloydetta Quaicoe as a result of an exploratory study on the “Psychosocial Needs of Immigrant and Refugee School Children.” During a workshop at the release of the findings, study participants recommended opportunities to share and learn from each other’s cultures. The organization has since expanded to include rural schools as well as Aboriginal and Francophone communities.
We had a chance to sit and talk to Dr. Quaicoe about Sharing Our Cultures initiatives and mission. Listen in to get the full story.

Born and raised in Jamaica, Xaiver has considered Newfoundland and Labrador home for over a decade. These islands are quite different, but Xaiver feels that living in Jamaica prepared him for life on the Rock. Minus the snow, sleet and lack of sun – the people are equally warm and friendly.
His fiction has been published in The Malahat Review, Riddle Fence, and the anthologies Us, Now and Hard Ticket (Fall 2022) by Breakwater Books; Release Any Words Stuck Inside You III by Applebeard E. His second play, “One Name,” is currently being workshopped for production by Halifax Theatre for Young People. Xaiver’s non-fiction work concerns the lives of enslaved and freed Black people in early Newfoundland settlements, which can be found in the CBC podcast series “Unearthed,” which he also narrates. His first children’s picture book, “A Single Dreadlock,” is scheduled for release in Fall 2024 by Groundwood Books.
We're celebrating Latin American Heritage Month in Canada!
The latest edition of ANC's Global Frequencies Podcast features Santiago Guzmán. He is an award-winning playwright, dramaturge, performer, & director originally from Metepec, Mexico, now based in St. John's, NL. He is the Artistic Director of TODOS Productions & the Artistic Associate for Playwrights Atlantic Resource Centre.
Santiago's work aims to put local, under-represented narratives and characters on the frontlines whilst inviting audiences to appreciate the vibrancy of Newfoundland and Labrador from a diverse perspective.
Santiago's work is very gay, very brown, and very real. Santiago believes that representation matters.

Yaw Antwi-Adjei is the proud co-owner of the 1949 Barbershop, with two locations serving a diverse community known as the United Nations Barbershop because they have barbers from all around the world. Listen in and hear how he got to where he is and a personal look at the challenges that lead to success.
Hailing from the coastal city of Dar-es-salaam, Tanzania, Baraka steadily widened his musical prowess while on a journey that brought him to St. John’s, Newfoundland, in pursuit of his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Memorial University. Since his graduation in 2020, Baraka has slowly and steadily burst onto the live music scene with a soulful singer/songwriter sound and spirit that is sure to tug at every heartstring in any room.
An expansive repertoire of highly loved Pop & RnB covers, paired with his relatable and catchy original music, Baraka’s uncanny ability to tell stories behind his songs, and the inspiration he drew from his idols in his early years make for a well-balanced live performance experience that many would relish, whether sat down listening attentively or on the dance floor singing along.
Baraka continues to work on his debut 5-Track EP set for release in Fall 2022 while earning repeat performances at jewel live music venues such as The Black Sheep, The Salt House, Greensleeves Pub, TJ’s Patio, and The Rec Room.

Known to his family, friends and new found fans as JJ, Khamadi Ojiambo. JJ was born and raised in a family of 4 in Nairobi, Kenya. From a young age, he fell in love with music. His parents sang and played guitar and piano at home and church, encouraging him to learn from an early age. JJ brings talent to a whole new level as a singer, songwriter and musician who is fluent in guitar, bass guitar, drums and piano. Listen in as JJ tells us about his journey and future musical plans.

Christiana shared with us a variety of African meals, from our special tasty Jollof rice to our signature chilled Zobo drink. All the dishes are flavourful and spiced to satisfy our customers’ diverse preferences ranging from mild to super hot and spicy.

In week three of our special Global Music Series, we welcome Nigerian-born artist John "Imoudu " Idinye. Imoudu grew up listening to musical giants like Fela Kuti, Micheal Jackson and Kanye West. These artists helped shape Imoudu's idea of what it means to make music. Imoudu focuses on multiple musical genres from hip-hop to pop to afro-beats and occasionally rock. Host Barb Walsh talks with Imoudu about the mix of these genres that have ultimately created his own musical identity.

Ronald's Delicacies Treats is a bakery based in St John's. They provide baked goods that have an African/Canadian flavour. Tadiwa Ronald Rushambwa is the main baker and founder of the business who hails from Zimbabwe. Ronald has a Degree in Business from Memorial University. He was inspired to start the business with his love for baking.
His products can be found at the Farmers Market on Saturdays and The Family Market Cafe, and orders can be placed online via social media platforms.
In the second week of our Global Music Series podcast, we are joined by SeanT Le Savant. Le Savant is an independent singer, songwriter, and producer initially born and raised in the Caribbean island of Antigua and Barbuda. His music has elements of R&B, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Soul, Blues, and Soca. This talented singer talks with us about his single "Captivated" and his musical journey in NL.
You will also get a taste of upcoming Global Music artists Shamik Ahmad and Chanel Rolle & Ibukun Olomodosi, who will be sharing the stage with SeanT Le Savant on Wednesday, August 10th at the Rooms Amphitheater. We are excited to share this music with you!

Global Music is Back!
Music NL, Association for New Canadians (ANC), and the Rooms kick off the Global Music summer series 2022 on August 3rd. Now in its second year, the Global Music series has grown from three concerts to five. Concerts will take place every Wednesday evening at 7 pm in The Rooms outdoor amphitheatre.
In celebration of the Global Music Series, Global Frequencies will highlight several musicians from this summer's concert series. In our first episode, we talk to Mariana Castro Carvajal, Diversity and Community Coordinator / Connector Program Manager at MusicNL, and Global Music performer, Onelvis Fernandez.
Mariana explains how newcomer musicians can connect to the music industry in Newfoundland and Labrador and what support Music NL provides for newcomer musicians.

In this third episode, we welcome Navel Sarr originally hailing from Mauritian. He is the founder and President of SarFest (St.John’s African Festival) based in St John's, Newfoundland.
Navel was born in Mauritania and studied computer science in Senegal and Mauritania, and has lived in Canada for 16 years, of which 5 have been in NL. Navel created SARFest 5 years ago when he noticed that the Africans and Afro-descendant didn't want to stay in NL because they didn't feel at home. Some say there are not a lot of cultural activities for them in NL. In order to retain Africans and Afro-descendants in NL, he decided to build a bridge between Newfoundlanders and the African community. Hence SARFest was born!!
Welcome to ANC's Black Excellence in NL podcast series; in this second episode, we welcome Tendai Mudunge from Zimbabwe. He is the director of Jebula Entertainment and a dancing enthusiast based in St John's, Newfoundland, who first fell in love with Latin dancing in Vancouver in 2015. Since then, he has continued to evolve by learning from some of the top dancers in Canada. His greatest strength is his charming personality, and nothing makes him happier than sharing his knowledge and spreading his love for dance across Newfoundland.

This week we welcome Didan Ashanta! She is a Resilience Strategist and Migrant Integration Specialist who loves to promote simplicity, joy and resiliency to everyone she encounters. Born and raised in Jamaica, she has spent the last 20 years travelling, working, and studying throughout the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Didan founded Resilient Foreigner to help people overcome the social isolation, cultural fatigue and financial insecurity they face after moving to a new country. She is on a mission to equip 1 million foreign workers and international students worldwide to become Resilient Foreigners.

Welcome to Global Frequencies; Pride Month Edition 2022! This June, we celebrate Pride Month as we highlight the 2SLGBTQIA+ Community's contribution to the diversity, economic growth and community support in the province.
In this first episode, we chatted with the owners of Tlacuache Mexican Restaurant, Jorge Serrano and Diego Cortes from Mexico. Tlacuache Mexican Restaurant opened three months ago at 47 Main Street in Corner Brook, NL. The restaurant is already garnering rave reviews from customers and is becoming a safe community space for all people to share food and language while celebrating diversity. We'll also hear a beautiful song from Evelyn Jess, a local musician and member of the 2SLGBTQIA+.

We wrap up our Asian Heritage Month 2022 Global Frequencies Series by welcoming Negin Fini, originally from Iran, located in western Asia. Our guest host Barb Walsh chatted with Negin Fini about her newly opened Persian restaurant, Persepolis Persian Restaurant.
With most ingredients imported directly from Iran, Persepolis Persian Restaurant brings authenticity. She is hoping for more international cuisine in NL.

They opened an upscale eyebrow sculpting bar in Corner Brook, Apsara Brow Bar, in 2019. Located in the Corner Brook Plaza, Apsara Brow has become a staple in the spa and wellness industry on the West Coast of the island. We are excited to celebrate the success of Asian Canadian Business owners in our province.

Asian Heritage Month offers all Canadians an opportunity to learn more about the history of Canadians of Asian descent and to celebrate their contributions to the growth and prosperity of Canada.
In the first episode of our Asian Heritage Month series, we connected with Sulagna Sanyal, a South Asian from Calcutta, India. She shares her journey of finding a home in Newfoundland and Labrador, which included opening a restaurant in her community of Dildo during the pandemic.

This week in our Global Frequencies special Multiculturalism Month edition, we focus on our community partner: The St. John’s Farmers’ Market. The St. John’s Farmers’ Market is a true community space that showcases local vendors, provides space for people to gather, and organizes events and programs to reflect the needs of the community. The St. John’s Farmers’ Market aims to create a safe and inclusive space for diversity to flourish, which extends from its mandate to celebrate the City's history, uniqueness, cultural diversity, charm, and potential.

- Neelparnaa is a new undergraduate student at Memorial University. Identifying as a person from West Bengal (India), she tells us about her move from South Asia to British Columbia (Canada), and then to St. John’s.
