It was after(and because of, one could add) his victory at the the battle of Lechfeld that frankish King Otto the First became the first "Holy Roman Emperor", being the first of many to rule Germany and quite a lot of central/Western Europe over the next millennium. This podcast takes you on a journey from this defining battle to the start of the Napoleonic Wars after which the Holy Roman Empire would cease to exist.
