Pastor Ricky comes back for Part 2 on the theology of suffering!

Last time we looked at suffering from a practical standpoint, how it impacts our lives, how God can use it, and how we should respond to it.

In today's episode we look at suffering from a more systematic standpoint, examining the Biblical basis for the previous episode's theology.

We also take time to examine the difference between godly suffering and affliction, and natural consequence.

A brief sermon for the 7th Sunday after Trinity. Here are the readings:

Genesis 2:7-17, ESV

Then the Lord God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living creature. And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden, in the east, and there he put the man whom he had formed. And out of the ground the Lord God made to spring up every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

A river flowed out of Eden to water the garden, and there it divided and became four rivers. The name of the first is the Pishon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold. And the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is the Gihon. It is the one that flowed around the whole land of Cush. And the name of the third river is the Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it. And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, β€œYou may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

Romans 6:19-23, ESV
I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.

For when you were slaves of sin, you were free in regard to righteousness. But what fruit were you getting at that time from the things of which you are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Mark 8:1-9, ESV
Jesus Feeds the Four ThousandIn those days, when again a great crowd had gathered, and they had nothing to eat, he called his disciples to him and said to them,β€œI have compassion on the crowd, because they have been with me now three days and have nothing to eat.And if I send them away hungry to their homes, they will faint on the way. And some of them have come from far away.”And his disciples answered him, β€œHow can one feed these people with bread here in this desolate place?” And he asked them, β€œHow many loaves do you have?” They said, β€œSeven.” And he directed the crowd to sit down on the ground. And he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he broke them and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and they set them before the crowd. And they had a few small fish. And having blessed them, he said that these also should be set before them. And they ate and were satisfied. And they took up the broken pieces left over, seven baskets full. And there were about four thousand people. And he sent them away.

Listen along as I talk with Tabitha Edwards about her journey through the wilderness, and how she came out of Charismatic and New Age beliefs into the comforting arms of Christ.

Tabby grew up Charismatic, watching word of faith televangelists, and that led her down a path of polytheism, new age ideas, and all sorts of dangerous places. Eventually our Lord Jesus found her and brought her into the Lutheran Church, where she has found great peace and comfort.

I hope her story is inspirational to you, and I hope you learn a lot from it!

Literally the most relaxed interview I've ever had.

I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Pr. Ricky Beckett and recording probably the most chill interview in the world. We just kinda... talk. We cover everything from politics, to video games, to Lord of the Rings... It's great!

I hope you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed recording it!

On this episode I had the pleasure of interviewing Fr. Wirtz of Christian Combatives. We had a great time chatting and have even started talking about putting out some more content together on both his channels and mine!

I hope you enjoy this discussion! It was a lot of fun to record.

If you haven't yet, check out Christian Combatives on YouTube - it has a ton of great content and is a great source for apologetics and dogmatics. And, if you get him over 1,000 subscribers, he'll make a video on whether or not it's a sin to be a furry (spoiler: it is).

This week I sit down with Twitter's very own C. D. Henry to discuss his journey to Lutheranism and the comforts of Lutheran Theology.

We also spend an inordinate amount of time discussing alcohol preferences.

It was truly a great time, and even cutting out about 20 minutes of personal chatter, we're still at the 80 minute mark, making this one of the longer episodes I've recorded.

I hope you enjoy!

Pr. Hans Fiene of Bread Twitter was kind enough to sit down for an hour and speak with me about being a pastor, his Lutheran Satire side-project on YouTube, and our general attitudes about the world around us.
I had a great time speaking with Pr. Fiene, and I really enjoyed his perspective on things. What's so amazing to me, especially going back and listening over the editing process, was how thorough, intelligent, and quick he was with all of his answers.
I do not send questions ahead of time, and all his answers were natural, off the cuff answers.Β

I had the overwhelming joy of getting to sit down and speak with Rev. Seth Hecox, an ELCA pastor and member of the band Becoming the Archetype. Rev. Hecox tweeted a question: Would you be willing to admit Jesus was wrong?
It got him in some trouble with conservative Christians of various stripes. I figured I would take the time to have him on and let him, in his own words, explain the point he was trying to make.Β
We also spent quite a good amount of time speaking about ministry, our denominational differences, and his band, Becoming the Archetype - one of my all time favorite musical acts.

In this week's episode, I share with you part one of a two hour conversation that I had with Everyone's Favorite Chad, the one that's Literally Catholic: @Literally_Chad

This episode, like I said, is part one. I felt like a big two hour thing was a bit too long, since my episodes average about 70 minutes. I didn't want to suddenly double the runtime for you guys.

I would love to give you notes on what we talk about, but we really run the gamut and talk about everything. This discussion started out as us taking on getting guys to just DM the girl and get married so we can have more Christian babies, but we ended up - pretty immediately - moving on to other topics.Β

In this episode of Lutheran Answers, I had the pleasure of sitting down and having a very thoughtful and encouraging conversation with Mr. Zack Houghton. Zack, who goes by @ZDHoughton on Twitter, graduated from a Reformed Baptist Seminary with a Master's Degree in Pastoral Leadership and was a Baptist minister for some time before being convinced of the Lutheran Confessions.

Today you can hear us discuss Baptist theology, Mr. Houghton's personal journey, and the comfort that the confessional Lutheran view of Christian theology truly brings.

And, keep your ear open to the beginning! You'll hear pretty early on (about the 7 minute mark) a cut in the audio. That's because a storm blew over my town briefly and knocked my power out! I was actually off the call immediately after asking Zack a question.

Thanks to Riverside.FM we didn't lose any audio, despite my entire computer shutting off! That's because Riverside uploads each participant's audio and video individually. This allows for higher quality audio and video and avoids interruptions - even if the host drops off the call like I did!

**Pastor Joe is on vacation and I was asked to give the message today in his place. We're using the Historic One Year which gives us the following texts:

Matthew 7:15-23
A Tree and Its Fruit**β€œBeware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep's clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.A healthy tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a diseased tree bear good fruit.Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus you will recognize them by their fruits.

I Never Knew Youβ€œNot everyone who says to me, β€˜Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, β€˜Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?’And then will I declare to them, β€˜I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.’

Jeremiah 23:16-29Thus says the Lord of hosts: β€œDo not listen to the words of the prophets who prophesy to you, filling you with vain hopes. They speak visions of their own minds, not from the mouth of the Lord. They say continually to those who despise the word of the Lord, β€˜It shall be well with you’; and to everyone who stubbornly follows his own heart, they say, β€˜No disaster shall come upon you.’”

For who among them has stood in the council of the Lord
to see and to hear his word,
or who has paid attention to his word and listened?

Behold, the storm of the Lord!
Wrath has gone forth,
a whirling tempest;
it will burst upon the head of the wicked.

The anger of the Lord will not turn back
until he has executed and accomplished
the intents of his heart.
In the latter days you will understand it clearly.

β€œI did not send the prophets,
yet they ran;
I did not speak to them,
yet they prophesied.

But if they had stood in my council,
then they would have proclaimed my words to my people,
and they would have turned them from their evil way,
and from the evil of their deeds.

β€œAm I a God at hand, declares the Lord, and not a God far away? Can a man hide himself in secret places so that I cannot see him? declares the Lord. Do I not fill heaven and earth? declares the Lord. I have heard what the prophets have said who prophesy lies in my name, saying, β€˜I have dreamed, I have dreamed!’ How long shall there be lies in the heart of the prophets who prophesy lies, and who prophesy the deceit of their own heart, who think to make my people forget my name by their dreams that they tell one another, even as their fathers forgot my name for Baal? Let the prophet who has a dream tell the dream, but let him who has my word speak my word faithfully. What has straw in common with wheat? declares the Lord.Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces?

Acts 20:27-38

I was asked to speak at my church this Sunday because Pastor Joe was going out of town. The lectionary reading for the day was Luke 5:1-11
Jesus Calls the First Disciples
5
On one occasion, while the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret, 2 and he saw two boats by the lake, but the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. 3 Getting into one of the boats, which was Simon's, he asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the people from the boat. 4 And when he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, β€œPut out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch.” 5 And Simon answered, β€œMaster, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at your word I will let down the nets.” 6 And when they had done this, they enclosed a large number of fish, and their nets were breaking. 7 They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both the boats, so that they began to sink. 8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, β€œDepart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” 9 For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, 10 and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, β€œDo not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” 11 And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.

I'm reuploading another archive episode of Buzzers! This time I go through a sermon from a local church called The River House! It's awful. If you don't know how the game works, we listen to a sermon or prophecy or otherwise supposedly Christian piece of audio and stop it every so often to interject jokes, quips, or obnoxious sound effects. These things denote that what you've just heard is actually heresy, and not Christianity.

Welcome back to everyone's favorite game show: Buzzers! Where we play obnoxious sound effects whenever a pastor, preacher, or teacher says something blatantly heretical. Today we revisit Pastor Stacey Long at The River House Church in Fayetteville, NC, and his sermon on why women should wear head coverings. Wait, no, I'm sorry. His sermon is actually on why those passages of the Bible don't count, can be safely ignored, and why women can be pastors.
