This season has taught me a lot about ministry and following Jesus. In this episode, I lay out five of the biggest things I've learned and how they apply to church leaderships and our personal walk with Jesus.

Plus I give an update on Season 2 and when you should expect that.

Thanks for a great first season!

Jake Muller wanted to prove himself worthy of ministry once he was hired to his first pastoral role. That led to him running too hard, too fast to where he ended up experiencing crippling anxiety, heart palpitations, and multiple trips to the doctor. In this episode we talk about what he's learned about himself - and Jesus - since leaving church staff and how he'd encourage anyone overcoming burnout today.

PS - I had a bit of a cold when we recorded this episode. If I sound a little more hoarse than normal, that's why.

Women in ministry deal with things men never even have to think about. This week we hear from Danielle Dewitt about the double standard she faced, how a church can be great for you to attend but not great to work for, and why it's so hard to stay at your church once you leave the staff.

In June of 2020, Mitch Benedict was called into a meeting where he was told effective immediately he would be “transitioning” out of his role. To keep his six-week severance package, he had to sign an NDA. Then the church sent an email out telling everyone he left on his own for reasons that weren't true.

In this episode we talk to him about how he kept his relationship with Jesus through that, how getting fired helped him reset his priorities, and what church looks like for him today.

After interviewing for his dream job in ministry at the church he grew up in, Blaine Pittman was fired from his job for not being loyal to his current church. In this week's episode, we talk about what it's like to be in a brand new marriage living in a city you moved to for a job while no longer having that job or any local community of support. Through it all though, Blaine has built his faith back up, found his true identity, and is now worshiping as part of a community where he can be known and cared for.

This week we talk to someone who started on the launch team of a brand new church plant, eventually became the Kids Ministry Director, and ended up losing herself in the entire process. Jessica Sizemore tells us about how giving everything to her church wrecked her relationship with Jesus and how she's found herself - and her relationship with him - since stepping down.

This week we talk to a former high school pastor, church planter, and most importantly - the guy who hired me for my first ministry job. Chris Jessen planted a church and then felt God calling him to step aside as lead pastor and move into a new career. In this episode, we talk about the guilt Chris experienced leaving the church he started, what he had to unlearn about his relationship with Jesus, and how attending the church he used to pastor has impacted him and his family.

In the first episode of Unlearning Church Staff, we talk with my cohost from Unlearning Youth Group - Eric Williams - about his experience at two of the largest megachurches in America. In the episode, he talks about how his church staff experience led him to feel like he was always trying to earn God's favor, how he experienced a version of PTSD after leaving, and how he's trying to rebuild a healthy relationship with Jesus in the aftermath.
