Summertime and the living is easy!

Welcome back to my awesome tribe of brain explorers!

Speaking of exploring, I had an experience recently that reminded me of our brain that I am excited to share with you today.

Confession time…. I recently snuck away from you amazing listeners and I took a vacation.

My husband and I took an overseas trip for 2 weeks and it was fantastic.

But it did not start out fantastic unfortunately.

We had a series of unfortunate events when trying to get to our first destination.

All the horror stories of international travel that get lambasted in the movies?

Yep- you guessed it. Happened to us.

Flights super delayed? Yep.

Crazy Karen’s causing a scene on the plane? Yep.

Changing planes when we were already part way down the runway?

If you said yes, you would be right.

So, what does this all have to do with the brain?

Well, I will give you a hint, the plane had sensors that were going haywire…

Tune in to hear the whole crazy story on today’s episode!

Join me as we dive into:

  • Trying to go with the flow on a crazy flight.

I can’t believe it!

Do you realize what we did together?

We have made it to 100 episodes!

I know, I know, “One Hundred Episodes” feels like an unreal number but it’s true.

We have been through thick and thin on this podcast for almost 2 years so today I want to celebrate our milestone by talking about milestones.

When this whole thing got going, I just had a dream.

I knew that I wanted to help more people but I have finite time in the day.

I wanted to scale up my reach and ramp up the number of people that I helped without sacrificing my family life balance along the way.

And so, I talked with my support team and we realized that launching a podcast as a source of free help for those around me seemed like a winner of an idea.

Now here we are, 2 years later with 100 episodes under our belts and thousands of episodes downloaded and listened to.

It’s quite remarkable what we have done together and I TRULY do mean together with you, my listeners.

There were certainly days where I was tired and I didn’t want to record a podcast but hearing the feedback from people saying how they found this or that episode helpful or insightful truly is a motivating force.

So, celebrate your milestones my fantastic people.

Lean in to your accomplishments.

The world works so hard to make you feel and play so small but not today-today I want you to really think about everything that you have produced and accomplished in your journey through life!

Join me for a celebration!

  • The dream that made this podcast a reality.
  • The importance of recognizing and celebrating your milestones.
  • How we can make this community grow even more.

Hello my amazing listeners!

I have recently returned from a trip abroad and while I was gone, there were a number of storms in my home region which produced severe winds and even tornados.

And that’s what I want to talk about today- tornados of thoughts if you will.

See many clients have been coming to me lately talking about how when their thoughts get to spiraling, it seems really difficult to get them to stop.

This feeling of endless thoughts swirling in our brains can quickly lead to anxiety or even panic attacks in some.

And for many, I find this is un-ending storm of thoughts frequently is a key cause of their burnout and overwhelm.

So, what do we do about our spiraling thoughts?

Well, there are different ways to approach it but today I want to focus on “Mindfulness.”

Mindfulness is a specific type of meditation and, before you say “But Julie! I don’t know how to meditate,” just know that it’s not necessarily the sit down, close your eyes and breathe deep for 10 minutes type of meditation.

Mindfulness is the idea of getting your way to focus back down to a single thought at a time to try to quiet those spiraling thoughts.

This episode I am going to teach you some basic mindfulness techniques which should help you start to tame those wild, endless thoughts!

Join me to discuss:

  • The dangers of spiraling, stormy thoughts.
  • How mindfulness can help you tame your storming brain.
  • My 5 sense's technique to help you on your mindfulness journey.

Summer time is definitely here in Houston!

After going through my case study on Suzie, I really hope that you gained value going through some of the facets of a real-life client’s journey.

As I tried to illuminate in our last show, our journey through mental health and burnout recovery is different for everyone.

With those differences, it can often feel isolating.

We fear judgement for our mental health journey and we fear being a “burden” on others.

Something I tell my clients frequently is “Our perception becomes our projection.”

You see, we are our own worst critic and very often, we impose those thoughts as the perception of others.

You know what I mean…

You see someone on the street and you think “I just know for sure they are judging the spot on my shirt where I spilled my drink” because WE ourselves are preoccupied with the spot on our shirt where we spilled a drink.

The vast majority of the time though, people are not judging you.

Because they are too busy judging themselves in turn.

We are all frequently in our own heads and not spending one thought judging others because we are too busy judging ourselves.

Let’s discuss!

Join me as we dive into:

  • Why we spend so much time thinking about the judgement of others?
  • How we subconsciously alter our behavior for the perceived judgement of others.
  • Ways we can try to be mindful of our perceptions to alter our outcomes.

Oh, my goodness…here we are friends!

Where you might ask?

Well, we are at the final episode of our case study on my client Suze and her amazing journey of healing from burnout.

We have talked about so many things but ultimately it really comes down to is understanding the things we can control and the things we cannot.

In this conclusion episode of my case study, we touch briefly on how these lessons in Suze’s journey apply to all of my listeners and how some of you might hear these things differently.

Men and Women ARE different and take different lessons to heart.

They also manifest their burdens differently and we need to understand how to help each other in our respective places and perspectives.

I share in this episode the things I needed from my partner in our marriage to make our journey successful and help me recover from motherhood induced burnout.

But the most important lesson I hope that you all take from this case study is this…

No one’s burnout recovery journey is the same as another so it’s about understanding how we can adapt these lessons to each of our own journeys.

This is why you need someone who can hear you and guide you.

This is, unfortunately, why too many people take an online program to help with burnout and fail to make material gains from it.

Everyone needs advice, tools and guidance individualize for their own personal burden.

If you find yourself resonating with some of the lessons, we have discussed in our case study, I really invite you to consider jumping on a free call with me to discover if I can help.

Join me today for:

  • How men's mental health journey frequently differs from women.
  • The most important lesson for starting to handle your burnout.
  • Ways that I personally shifted the burdens I could control when running my business.

Hope you are ready for more burnout fighting knowledge friends!

We have covered a lot of things in the journey of my client Suzie.

As we worked through her time audits and the importance of wellness as well as focusing on her relationships, another really important factor in her recovery journey came up.

You see she would meet with me and do really well for a few days but then as always happens when you try to change for the better, life starts to try to move you back to the homeostasis it thought you were in before.

Now I want to take a moment to point something out- Suzie, if you haven’t guessed is a woman.

Some of the struggles she has had were a result of that- pressures of being the “perfect mom” and trying to perform at a high level in a male dominated field.

It made her feel like she had something to prove and so slowly but surely, she started pulling back on her boundaries.

But these problems are not unique to women.

Men also struggle with boundaries and it all goes back to a root cause.

The perception of others.

Women its unconsciously more accepted for women to have boundaries or be child focused but they are often perceived as weak for having them or not ambitious enough.

With men, they are expected to be the martyrs- they can’t turn down any assignment or request no matter how bad their mental health is because they are just supposed to keep going and going and going.

When they do have a problem, it’s a “mid-life crisis” or just “a funk” that they are expected to work themselves out of.

But both men and women are deserving of relief from burnout and anxiety.

So, as you listen to this episode of Suzie’s journey, remember that “Suzie” can be any of us.

Another dive into:

  • The importance of holding onto our boundaries as we start our burnout recovery.
  • How the world reacts to and treats men and women's mental health journeys.
  • Ways that Suzie and I regained control at work and established her professional boundaries without alienating people.

Can you believe how quickly April flew by?

Our case study through the journey of my client Suzie continues this week as we talk about the normalcy of the journey sometimes feeling like it was moving up and then down.

Suzie noticed that often she would be doing really well as we worked together but then something would come up and she would stumble a bit.

I often liken it to a spiral staircase with my clients.

Sometimes you are moving upward but because you still see the stairs straight ahead of you, it can feel like you aren’t progressing.

The journey through burnout can have that same sense of feeing like, “Hey I am doing the work but it just seems like I am continually looking at more work? What gives?”

Just when the thoughts of overwhelm started trying to creep back in Suzie’s mind, I make her stop and take care of herself.

I made her take time for her physical health and helped her rediscover some of her creativity.

Essentially, I reminded her that the path to healing isn’t just working with me but also stopping to relax and to rest.

Forcing yourself to take a step back and look around you rather than just at the wall of stairs climbing upward, you realize that you have elevated yourself even while seeming to be just starring forward.

Let’s keep moving through this real life client’s journey on the path from burnout to wholeness.

Today's discussion includes:

  • Why "2 steps forward, 1 step back" is completely normal.
  • Reconnecting Suzie's relationship to her wellness routines.
  • How we started to heal Suzie's intimate and social relationships.

Happy to see you all again!

We are now in week 3 of my case study of an actual client’s journey with me to help her resolve her burnout and general dissatisfaction with life.

Last week, I walked you through the idea of a time audit so that you can really hone in on how you are spending the hours of your day.

Hopefully you were able to complete at least a baseline of that.

Did it surprise you? Did it make you think?

Hopefully it did one or both and really gave you some ideas to consider about spending your time differently.

That’s not the only reason I had you do it though.

See, what I found with Suzie and many of my clients is that when you are so overwhelmed with the stress and burnout of everything in your life, it can seem never-ending.

Doing the time audit helps should have helped you feel like it was something you could control- a quick win if you will to give you that amazing shot of Dopamine that helps reinforce the results of your journey.

When I did this exercise with Suzie, we found an unexpected trauma trigger point.

Suzie discovered that anytime she tried to rest, it brought back old feelings of when she had been told she was lazy and worthless.

She felt like she would never amount to anything even in the midst of record productivity at work and strong relationships at home.

It brought up the dreaded…. Imposter Syndrome.

Tune into today’s episode to continue on this amazing ride of healing from a real-life client!

Join me for part 3 of our series!

  • Important discoveries from our Time Audit.
  • How we uncovered and started to resolve core memories driving Suzie's Imposter Syndrome.
  • Using the "Ladder Thoughts" system to help process trauma.

Welcome back my amazing people!

We are continuing this week with Part 2 of my case study of my client, “Suzie.”

When you start therapy, there is lots of information gathering so that I can understand what diagnosis is appropriate for the client.

For Suzie, she just wanted to enjoy life again and not feel like she was just going through the motions.

Suzie was a rockstar at her job and used to enjoy what she was doing but somehow lost some of that spark and steam.

She also wanted to reinforce relationships with her family and make the most of the time she had with them.

At the end of the day, she wanted to feel like a “Whole Person” again and not be burdened with this constant feeling of stress and overwhelm.

After gathering all of that data, we started to formulate a gameplan.

Now it’s important when you are going through a process of change that you think about the sustainability of the change.

So when you are introducing those changes, instead of doing tons of changes all at once, look at one key shift in your thinking and really hone in on it.

With Suzie, our plan was to look first at was necessary and what could be shifted to someone else’s responsibility.

But that was just the start…you will need to tune in to find out the rest!

Join me as we continue with:

  • Why therapy starts with so many questions?
  • Going through all of Suzie's various stress points to plan how to take control.
  • The underrated power of a Time Audit.

Welcome back to all you fantastic people!

April is known as National Stress Awareness month so I wanted to do something a bit different.

As you know, we talk a lot about the brain on this show and how it reacts to the world around us.

I try to give you practical tips you can use to better manage your mind so that it does not manage you.

For this month though, I decided to do something a bit different and take you through some anonymous case studies of actual clients I have worked with and seen amazing transformations within.

So, I want to talk to you today about a client I will name Suzie.

Suzie is a professional woman performing at a high level and going places in a tough and demanding field.

In addition to her professional accolades, she is a wife and mother to a family that she loves very much and she wanted to be present for.

On paper, she had everything figured out except she felt tired, anxious and overwhelmed.

She would find that she was meeting deadlines but procrastinating and then overperforming at the last minute.

When she got home, she felt like she was not the best version of herself and found herself too drained to give what she wanted to her kids and husband.

This is where she started when she walked in my door…Listen to find how much better she is doing today after we worked together to overcome her feelings of burnout and imposter syndrome.

Join me as we discuss:

  • What were the symptoms that brought Suzie to come and work with me?
  • Suzie's concerns about handling the future of her career and family needs.
  • The holistic foundational steps we started working on together to get her back on the right path.

Welcome back my amazing brain people!

We have made it past the whimsical April Fools Day!

Heaven knows my children enjoyed pranking both myself and my husband as they were home from school yesterday as part of their Easter break.

Though we have started a new month, my series on helping you understand and conquer your stress continues.

Last week we talked about one of the ways that chronic stress can affect you by examining the link between the stressed-out hippocampus and impaired decision making.

Next, we are going to look at what this does to you on an EMOTIONAL level.

At the same time that those logic and decision centers are sluggish and shrinking from your stress loads, your emotion centers spike to overdrive.

You may find yourself crying uncontrollably at seemingly minor problems.

Or perhaps you will try to mask it with manic, irrational happiness while you are secretly screaming inside.

Whatever it looks like for you, when your emotion centers are overstressed, it causes those trauma responses to flare up which then leads back to overstress in a spiraling cycle of unseen, internal stressors.

Add a few external stressors on top of that simmering inferno of internal stress and if we aren’t careful, we become a volcano of negative emotional energy.

Today we are going to talk about that cycle, assessing our stress loads and examining what coping methods work for me in my hope that it may spark some ideas for you.

Join me as we dive into:

  • Why am I so emotional when I am stressed?
  • Identifying potential internal and external stressors.
  • A few of my personal coping techniques I use to bring some stability back to my emotions.

The year is flying by way too fast my friends!

Spring is OFFICIALLY in the air along with copious amounts of pollen if you are in the South.

And just as mother nature is going to continually stress our sinuses for the next few months, I am going to continue our series we started last week talking about what stress does to our brain.

Did you know that stress physically alters your brain?

The stress hormones that your body releases named cortisol actually shrinks the hippocampus.

Why is that important you may ask?

Well, the hippocampus is responsible for two critical functions in your day-to-day life namely decision making and short-term memory.

This can lead to a cascade of stress where small decisions like what to have for dinner or what to wear for an occasion feel like huge life-altering decisions.

This is also why you start feeling like you are having more “brain farts” because again, that short-term memory is impaired.

When these become chronic, it leads to that dreaded burnout that you hear me talk so much about.

All is not lost though; today’s episode is dedicated to giving you some relief and help on this front.

We will go through some of the beginning steps that I take with my clients to help fight these chronic stressors.

This will include some real-world tools to employ at work to control the stress and some ways to relieve the stress after work.

And finally, I will give you the knowledge and awareness you need to recognize if you need some deeper help in a professional setting to control this aspect of your life.

Join me as we dive into:

  • The physiological effects of stress on the brain.
  • Recognizing the signs & symptoms of chronic stress.
  • Coping techniques you can start employing today to begin managing your stress.

Welcome back to my truly fantastic podcast listeners.

I want to be up front- today might be a bit heavier so if you need to take this episode in pieces, that’s perfectly ok.

Many of my clients lately have been coming to me with a common problem.

And that is trauma.

With that trauma will come what are known as “trauma responses” which are mechanism built into the brain to help us cope and protect us from that excess trauma.

So often, the trauma is caused by some form of stress.

Stress as we have discussed before, comes in many varieties.

There might be work stress, relationship stress, financial stress, parenting stress- there are MANY different kinds and sources of stress.

Now the brain is incredibly resilient and has very strong mechanisms for dealing with stress from maybe one or two sources.

The problems start to arise when we have seemingly innumerable sources of stress, our stress management system becomes overstimulated and overwhelmed.

If we aren’t careful, our brain becomes over focused on stress and can cause our emotions and reality to feel out of control.

It’s a broad discussion with many facets and I am breaking this up in 2 parts.

This week we are going to focus on the physiology of stress and types of trauma responses to that stress.

Join me as we dive into:

  • Why am I feeling overwhelmed all the time?
  • How does the brain physically react to stress?
  • What types of trauma responses and symptoms do I need to watch for?

Hello again to my fantastic listener!

Spring is in the air and we are fully in the month of March.

Not to get too serious but we are living through a time with a great deal of anxiety.

Inflation has made us anxious about our budgets and finance.

Layoffs in certain sectors of the economy perhaps have some worried about the job market.

Whatever it may be, we consume this anxiety inducing media and it can very easily trigger our deep-rooted insecurities about our ability to cope with the changing environment and the future unknowns.

Remember our brain is trying to keep us alive so it has an entire hormonal system dedicated to worrying.

Sometimes though this system can throw too many “red flags” as it were and if we are not careful, we can develop insecurities about our ability to cope or perform our daily life.

I know what you are thinking…. ”Julie, you are a brain expert. SURELY you of all people don’t have insecurities.”

Sadly, yes dear listener, I am as human as you are and so, I too will get insecurities about my work from time to time.

This episode I want to take you through a case study of the thought process I went through to get through a major bout of insecurity that I had last year.

I had been asked to present at an executive training for a multi-billion-dollar client and it was a new industry and client group than I had worked with in the past.

I found myself having those feelings of insecurity and imposter syndrome creep up until I employed the process and techniques to overcome insecurities that I discuss in this episode.

So sit back, relax and enjoy the story.

Come listen as we discuss:

  • What sorts of thoughts lead to deep-rooted insecurities?
  • My personal fight with insecurity in 2023.
  • The process and tools I teach my clients to use to overcome their insecurities and imposter syndrome.

Good day to my wonderful listeners!

We talk often about boundaries and limits on this podcast.

As humans we all have limits even though it can often be difficult to know what those are.

This week, a member of my amazing podcast editing team was going through some private emergencies and I wanted them to focus 100% on that.

They offered to get the work done because that's the kind of person they are but as a team we decided we wanted to give them all of their focus to take care of themselves and their family.

So today we are mixing things up!

We have a Retro-Rewind of one of my most popular episodes of the show.

Given that we have been talking about reframing our perceptions & removing toxicity from our lives, it felt like a PERFECT opportunity to revisit this episode all about confidence.

How are those related you ask? It's quite straightforward actually.

You cannot reframe your perceptions without the confidence in your ability to grow as a person.

And you cannot place boundaries around toxic people unless you feel empowered to protect yourself.

So if you are ready to take a trip back through memory lane of our fantastic brain journey together, let's move on with the episode!

This episode we share:

•Why Confidence is so important in our day-to-day mindset.

•The correct way to view and think about our abilities and attributes.

•2 hacks to implement in your daily life to constantly grow and reinforce your confidence.

And just like that we are at the end of February!

I can’t believe how quickly this month has gone by.

I was recently able to get together with a good friend of mine and we were discussing my most recent podcast about how our experiences cloud our perceptions.

And we were chatting, we came to realize we both had some similar clouded experiences with toxic people that were in our same social circles.

We all will go through life encountering many different types and shades of toxic people.

Maybe it’s a horrible boss or a rude person at a store or terrible drivers on a road.

Naturally we can work to limit our exposure to those folks.

Often though, it can be people that we can’t easily limit in our lives.

Whether it is family, people at our common social groups like church or the gym or even people that we consider friends can all be toxic.

And our brains can take away some incredibly unhelpful thoughts if we are unprepared for what these toxic people can do to us.

So, I decided to help you with a primer to protect that precious brain of yours from these insidious and harmful effects of toxicity in our lives.

First, we are going to talk about what are some of the most common toxic behaviors.

This then will naturally give you some foresight into some of the most common types of toxic people.

And more importantly I am going to help you with some tools and ways to manage the influence of toxic people in our lives.

Come join me as we discuss the following:

  • What sorts of toxic behaviors should I be aware of?
  • Who are the toxic people that I might encounter in my life?
  • Tools you can use to control and limit the toxic people you may encounter.

Salutations to my lovely podcast listeners.

Have you ever had a conversation with someone where you are both recounting something that happened in the past, and you realize part way through the discussion, that you each have a completely different understanding of what happened?

You start to think, wait what? How in the world is that how you perceive that event?

What you have to remember is that our prior life experiences inform how our brain views and records events.

Sometimes we call this bias or perhaps clouded perceptions.

It’s really just the point of view that our brain has developed to protect us based on both the good and bad things that have happened in our lives up to that certain point.

Based on our experiences, it will inform three things when an event happens to us.

It alters how we think an event occurs, how we feel about that event and finally how we will react to this event in the future.

By way of an example, I am going to pick on my husband a bit in this episode but don’t worry it ends well.

Small spoiler…

He once took a comment I made in a completely different way than I intended and he stopped buying me flowers…

I know…. not cool.

But as I said, the story ends well so come have a listen to this week’s episode and find out all about how our perception of events changes our understanding and remembering of them.

Come join me as we discuss the following:

  • Why do our brains not see the same event in the same way?
  • How my husband stopped buying me flowers?
  • How to be mindful of our own biases and better understand our uncomfortable emotions?

Love is in the air my friends!

Happy Valentines Day for those of my listeners who celebrate it.

As I was considering what to share with you on this week, I started thinking about how our brain creates & responds to the feeling of “love.”

It got me thinking about my own whirlwind romance to my now husband.

And finally, it got me thinking about how this time can be difficult for those that may not currently be in a relationship.

Like so many things that our brain does, there is a primitive and developed brain aspect to love.

The primitive brain often feeds the feelings of love between two people in order to ensure survival and satisfy it’s need for social connection.

Those connections that our primitive brain forms with others are pivotal to creating and releasing vital hormones that increase our health and wellbeing while also lowering stress.

Something that gets overlooked in society though is that while romantic love can trigger many of these beneficial hormones, platonic love or child/parent love can also attain many of the same physiological benefits of romantic love.

There are also other things that can trigger the same parts of your brain and flood your body with these wellness and stress relief hormones.

So, as you consider your relationships this week, I truly hope this episode helps you examine all the love in your life and how much benefit it brings to you.

I am SO excited to talk about this with you today!

Come join the love train on today's episode:

  • The physiological functions & benefits of love in your brain.
  • The different hormones associated with love.
  • All the different ways you can activate these hormones even outside of romantic relationships.

Hello again to my fantastic podcast friends!

Can you believe it is February? January certainly seems to have flown by.

I really hope my series on understanding and dealing with Perfectionism has been helpful.

I wanted to pivot a bit this week to talk about some feelings that I have seen recently with my clients.

For many, we have just finished a month where we are setting and hopefully keeping some goals that can often trigger some limiting beliefs in our brain.

And perhaps we have been really successful at some goals but also maybe not as good at some others.

We can easily start to doubt ourselves in this moment and that doubt can accidentally trigger the protective part of our brains that is sometimes not as helpful as it thinks it is.

Remember, that primal part of our brain looks at goals and changes as a threat to our being because it literally views those changes as trying to alter the person you were to something new…

And even when that something new is objectively good, it can still be very scary to our primitive brain.

Anytime you stretch or get uncomfortable, you brain sometimes views it the same way as touching an open flame or something sharp- it immediately tries to make us pull back.

The trick in this moment is to engage the “forward thinking” part of your brain.

This is the part of the brain that CRAVES those big goals and ambitions.

It’s the part of the brain that does the big things like put a man on the moon even when the rest of our brain screams “What are you thinking! You can’t go to space!”

So today, we are going to dive into this topic of tricking your brain into helping you with those big ambitions and goals

Can’t wait for you to listen!

Come join me as we discuss the following:

  • Why does your brain try to shy away from your big goals?
  • The Lizard Brain vs The Forward-Looking Brain.
  • Ways to engage your Forward-Looking brain to work toward your big goals.

Alright my amazing people!

We are at the end of January and the final episode in my series on Perfectionism.

Rounding out this series, today we are going to talk about how Perfectionism impacts those of us with ADD or ADHD.

Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder are very hot topics in the creator and mental health space.

ADD & ADHD is commonly diagnosed in Children and historically it was mostly diagnosed in young boys.

Generally speaking, it was understood to mean you were unable to focus, you procrastinated more and couldn’t sit still.

And these were the symptoms that most frequently manifested in young boys so it was easy to diagnose.

The medical field initially overlooked that this diagnosis manifests differently in young girls causing many girls to never get the help and coping skills they needed.

Now women are speaking out and the medical community has realized that in women and young girls, the symptoms are more anxiety related and struggle with motivation.

This has fueled the phenomenon known as “Adult Onset ADD” in women, generally speaking, but really this is just a result of it never being diagnosed properly in the first place.

Thankfully we have a much greater understanding now how these disorders affect both women and men and so I wanted to discuss how it intersects with the tendency towards perfectionism.

Disclaimer – while I am going to teach you some coping skills today and some things to be aware of, I am not diagnosing you over a podcast episode.

If you feel you may have undiagnosed ADD or ADHD, I strongly recommend you go speak with your doctor and potentially get the medical assistance you may need.

On today's final Perfectionism episode:

  • How to potentially recognize ADD/ADHD in yourself?
  • Perfectionism and ADD/ADHD.
  • Simple coping technique and tools to help you manage your perfectionism with your ADD/ADHD.

Salutations my amazing listeners!

Hopefully my US listeners have been able to stay warm during this week of record cold temperatures.

This week we are continuing my holistic series on Perfectionism with a discussion around what is known as “Socially Prescribed Perfectionism.”

Essentially, somewhere someone has told us that we must do a certain thing in a certain way by a certain time in order to be successful.

One of the most common examples that many of us are familiar with, is “You need to go to college!” or “You need to get good grades.”

Or perhaps it’s a colleague trying to give seemingly well-meaning advice like “Oh you need to look like this to be professional” or “You should be the first one here in the morning and the last to leave at night.”

Whatever it might be, it is these standards imposed on us by the outside world and society that often creep up into our thoughts at the back of our minds and cause us to feel like our effort will never be enough.

Often the standards or assumptions that our brain use to fuel these thoughts can change frequently making it even more difficult to overcome.

And it doesn’t matter how successful you might be, if you don’t confront and fix the core fault in the thought, these feelings of perfectionism will continue to haunt you.

This is one of the most frequent concerns that clients bring to me to try to overcome.

Thankfully there are proven methods of challenging and changing these channels of thought that allow you to regain the narrative in your brain.

I can’t wait to share this with you today.

Keep your growth on track with today's episode:

  • Where do these crazy standard's I impose on myself come from?
  • Why do I care what all these other people think?
  • Who should I actually be trying to please?

Hello again to my amazing listeners!

It’s the beginning of the year and we all know what that means for many of us…

We have set big sometimes scary goals.

Maybe it’s a big weight loss goal or health related goal.

Or it could be related to some personal learning like speaking a new language or completing a certification.

Perhaps it is a career-oriented goal- you want to increase your business revenue or work toward a big promotion.

Whatever it is, we have set a goal and January 1st rolls around and we dive in HARD.

We focus lots of mental and physical energy on trying to hit that target or outcome.

For a week…. two weeks…. three weeks…maybe even the full month of January.

And then something happens and we fall off the wagon.

Maybe we have a training injury that keeps us from working out for a few days.

Or we get sick and can’t work for a few days or can’t do our lesson or whatever it may be.

We start to think we are falling behind on our goal…these feelings then start causing us stress.

And that stress activates the self-sabotage part of our brain.

Remember the brain is lazy and generally speaking, fears anytime we change our routine or our environment.

But fear not! I’ve got you covered!

Today we are going to cover several ways to manage your brain & ensure long term success with your goals.

Keep on track with your goals on today's episode:

  • Answering the question, "Why am I failing at my goals?"
  • Reviewing how the brain reacts to big goals.
  • Tips & Tricks for turning your goals into long term habits.

Happy New Year Everyone!

I am welcoming you to 2024 with an amazing interview with true renaissance woman, Adrienne Evatt.

Adrienne is a chef, author, business coach, former Fortune 5 executive and the proud owner of Urban Dreamer Farm & Vineyard.

If I had to pick a theme for today’s interview, it would be summed up most succinctly by this quote from the episode:

“Our opinions of ourselves are sometimes surrounded by our thoughts of what others think or our thoughts of other’s thoughts.”

When you have people that believe in you and you internalize that belief, truly nothing can stop you from reaching your goals.

We will dive into Adrienne’s amazing story to explore the power of thoughts and the benefits of positive reinforcement.

We discuss the power of core beliefs to overcome challenges and limitations.

Now don’t get me wrong, we aren’t sugar-coating the hard work that needs to go with the power of that positive thought.

We talk about working days and nights in order to save money for schooling at a school that literally said “you don’t belong.”

We talk about low points and feelings of failing.

But through it all, the power of your brain to focus on the evidence of the positive and reinforce that evidence would shine through again and again.

So come on a journey of positive belief through grade school, college, corporate America and all the way now to baking and farming.

Bring in the New Year with today's chat about:

  • How the power of belief fueled Adrienne through a challenging grade school and college experience to graduate top of her class.
  • Leveraging insatiable curiosity and drive to a 24-year career in corporate America across multiple departments and 17 countries.
  • "I just never believed I couldn't" or How I went from Fortune 5 executive to baker and farm stand entrepreneur.

Hello to all of my lovely listeners!

In reviewing the Spotify wrap up for 2023 for my podcast, I noticed certain trends for which topics tended to be my most popular episodes.

One of those topics that was listened to at a much higher rate than many others was that of “Perfectionism.”

So, today’s episode will launch a bit of a mini-series of episodes about perfectionism and how this tendency intersects with other facets of our lives.

And in honor of the new year, I decided to start with discussing how perfectionism impacts goal setting and keeping.

Perfectionism really manifests in that feeling of “I’m not good enough, I’m failing and I just can’t do it.”

Often this feeling is rooted in an external source of feedback or a socialized expectation.

Now given that, it’s really easy to see how this feeling manifests in our goal setting.

After all, when we set goals, we are recognizing something in ourselves that we want to change or improve.

If those goals are imposed by an external source of expectations, then it is not going to be contextualized to your personal situation.

What it comes down to is we need to look at our OWN past and growth and hold ourselves accountable to our frame of reference.

Wanting the body of a super model whose full time job is working out and has a personalized chef & nutrition coach is likely not a reasonable frame of reference if you have to hold down a 9-5 office job and have had 3 kids.

Lamenting you are not a billionaire business owner is likely not a reasonable frame of reference if you didn’t grow up with the social network of wealthy parents.

So today we are going to talk about reframing your goal setting to ensure that your perfectionism does not stand in the way of your progress.

Keep on track with your goals on today's episode:

  • Reviewing the roots of perfectionism and the desire for external validation.
  • The importance of properly framing your goals in relation to your own journey.
  • 3 tips to help you set realistic and authentic goals without succumbing to perfectionism.

Can you believe we are already halfway through December?

It’s that time of year.

Almost all of us are doing it…

No, I am not talking about shopping or overdosing on holiday treats but yeah….we are all probably doing that too.

Many of us are looking at our 2023 and planning our 2024.

Maybe it’s a personal goal.

Perhaps you want to commit to a better sleep routine or it could be a more consistent exercise schedule.

It also could be a professional or career-oriented goal.

Maybe you are eyeballing the corporate ladder or you want to move from a six-figure small business to a multiple six-figure or even seven figure business.

Whatever that goal might be, I often times see people put this immense pressure on themselves with these extremely heavy goals.

These huge “scary” goals as we often hear them can quickly lead to burnout if they aren’t managed properly.

I want to share with you today something that should help with that.

It’s a formula that I have created to help you keep on track with your goals without leading to burnout.

The formula is a 3-letter acronym called CPR.

Now I know what you are thinking, “Julie- CPR stands for Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation. What does that have to do with a brain coaching podcast?”

And you are right, I am not about to tell you how to save someone who is having a cardiac event.

But what I am about to tell you is how spending 10 minutes a day using this formula can, in a very real way, assist in saving you from burnout.

What are you waiting for? Go listen to the podcast my friend!

Today we talk about:

  • How to avoid setting your 2024 goals on a course for failure.
  • What is C.P.R. and how does it help with burnout?
  • How just 10 minutes a day with this simple formula will fuel your 2024 achievement trajectory.

Before we conclude today’s episode, I just want to take a moment to say there is a lot of uncertainty in the world at the moment. In my 20 years as a clinician and 10 years as a business owner, I have helped hundreds of clients either move their professional career forward or improve the profitability of their business by 6 & 7 figures. If you are ready to make your business rock solid or take your career to the next level in 2024, this is your wake-up call to take action. I am offering an early Christmas package where we work together to get laser focused on your career and/or business strategy. As a bonus for any who sign up before December 15, you will get an additional VIP session which can be used in several ways. Happy December to my amazing listeners!

Another amazing Tuesday is here and it’s time for another important topic in protecting your emotional energy.

Do you have a friend or maybe family member where EVERYTHING that happens to them is just a little more than you?

Doesn’t matter if it’s a good or bad situation, if you share something that happens, they have had something similar happen on a grander scale.

Or perhaps you have had a boss where no matter how well your ideas are thought out, their idea is better for no other conceivable reason than you thought of it.

It might even get to the point where you start talking around the idea in the hopes that your boss things it’s their idea JUST so that you can get it done.

Both of these are examples of having to deal with Narcissism.

Regardless, in some way, we have all encountered and know the type.

The person where it all needs to revolve around them.

They need to have the best stories; the best ideas and they constantly hunger for attention.

Sometimes someone is a true narcissist and sometimes they just exhibit narcissistic tendencies.

Sometimes we might have a bad day which cause us to think “Am I a narcissist?” (Hint if you are self-aware enough to ask the question, you probably are not.)

So given that this topic of Narcissism came up in last weeks episode on Gaslighting, I thought it might be helpful to take a deeper dive.

So, sit tight and strap in for another episode of “What the hell is my brain doing?”

This episode we cover:

  • What is the clinical definition of Narcissism and how is that different from just having narcissistic traits?
  • How to recognize Narcissism in ourselves or others?
  • Ways you can deal with the Narcissism you encounter in your life.

Before we conclude today’s episode, I just want to take a moment to say there is a lot of uncertainty in the world at the moment. Happy December to my amazing listeners!

We have been talking a lot about things that may ruffle the feathers of those around us when we implement them into our lives.

Let’s review…

We have talked about setting healthier boundaries which can lead some people to think you are pushing them away when really you are creating space for your energy.

We’ve discussed how to better manage difficult conversations at work as we approach year end reviews.

Lastly, we spent some time looking at how we might be “People Pleasing” too much and how we can have a healthier approach that honors ourselves.

Given these new strategies you might be employing in your interpersonal and professional relationships, I wanted to take some time to warn you that some of these folks aren’t going to like your new energy….

They will perceive your new boundaries as a threat to their position in your life.

And your new focus on protecting and honoring yourself may be viewed as selfish.

Some of them will likely attempt to “Gaslight” you.

Gaslighting is a word that is enjoying quite a bit of buzz in society today.

TV, Movies, Online Articles- you name it and people are mentioning it.

Creators will say things like “Well this person gaslit me in such and such way” or someone on reddit might say “Such and such happened- are they gaslighting me?”

Like so many things though that become “trendy,” it can be misused and over-prescribed.

So on this weeks episode, we are going to do a little deep dive into the topic of gaslighting so that you can be properly prepared to know what to look out for and how to protect yourself from it when you start living this more authentic version of yourself.

On Today's Episode:

  • What actually IS Gaslighting?
  • Case Studies on Gaslighting at my former employer.
  • Ways you can deal with & protect yourself from professional Gaslighting.

Before we conclude today’s episode, I just want to take a moment to say there is a lot of uncertainty in the world at the moment. Welcome back my awesome people!

I hope my American listeners had an amazing Thanksgiving Holiday.

The last few weeks I have been focused on helping you recognize areas where we struggle with external relationships.

Whether its people pleasing or engaging in difficult conversations, many of these issues come down to boundaries.

Now I know that we have discussed boundaries before but this week, I wanted to take a different view on the subject.

Previously we talked about setting boundaries and how that protects our emotional health.

Now though, I want to focus in on how establishing boundaries protects your energy and prevents burnout.

It seems counter intuitive, especially to the person whom you are protecting your self from, but establishing boundaries actually allows you to give MORE of yourself to others.

When we set a boundary, we protect our own energy levels and this actually makes us more productive in the long run.

I know it sounds crazy…

You’re thinking…. Julie, how can I have more to give by holding some of myself back?

The answer to that question and how you can start setting small effective boundaries to regain your energy is all in today’s podcast.

Can’t wait to see you there!

On Today's Podcast:

  • Why is it so important to set healthy boundaries?
  • The key questions to start asking yourself in order to protect your energy.
  • What are Hard & Soft Boundaries and how do we put those in place?

Happy Thanksgiving to my United States listeners!

I am truly grateful for you my listeners and for giving me the opportunity to share information about things that I love.

So truly- thank you for being here, thank you for listening.

As we come toward the end of the year, we oft times find ourselves in a time of reviewing and self-reflection.

Many of you may find yourself being reviewed by a boss or by your teachers.

My bosses and managers will find themselves reviewing their team and their employees.

And finally, all of us will have an opportunity to look at what we accomplished for the year and consider where we want to go from here.

Frequently, this process causes us to focus on what we aren’t doing.

Almost by necessity, the process of review seems like an exercise in seeing what was not accomplished.

And frankly, this is somewhat natural- our brains are trying to keep us safe so things that aren’t completed feel like risks.

To the reviewers, you are in a position of great power to shape how your employees think.

I want to invite you to flip your script and focus more time in your review on the progress made and the victories of 2023.

Why you may ask? Because your brain focuses on what you reinforce.

So, if you focus on the things that have been accomplished, then the drive for accomplishment grows.

Which means you will be more productive and ultimately more likely to accomplish the thing that was missed.

I can’t wait to dive into these principles with you on today’s episode!

This episode we discuss:

  • Understanding the power dynamics in difficult conversations
  • Consequences on the brain of focusing primarily on "constructive criticism"
  • A better approach to difficult conversations that actually improves productivity

Holiday Season is in full swing!

We often associate the holiday season with greater levels of kindness and being more generous with our fellow man.

We go out of our way to be nicer to people.

There is nothing wrong with this as long as we continue to hold fast to our boundaries.

But often we ignore our own boundaries and quickly end up in the territory of “people pleasing.”

We want our boss to like us so you don’t voice your holiday downtime needs or we don’t voice when we are exhausted from all of the holiday overtime hours.

We want our family to like us so we subvert our own needs, we let them say things that they think are coming from a place of love but actually ends up hurting.

We want our kids to like us so we overschedule holiday activities or we overspend on holiday gifts thinking we can buy their affection.

Over and over, we compromise ourselves and actively harm ourselves because we think we need to please everyone else…EXCEPT ourselves.

It doesn’t have to be that way though.

It is possible to be kind and loving to others while also respecting our boundaries.

We need awareness, understanding and tools to help us navigate this complex human behavior.

And thankfully, you have a brain ally in your corner to help you unravel this mystery and start making positive changes.

Can’t wait to share all this and more and helping you toward healthier boundaries!

On Today's Episode:

  • Different ways you may not realize you are "people pleasing" at the expense of yourself.
  • How these behaviors become destructive to our emotional health.
  • Tools to consider which you can employ to help you challenge and reprogram these people pleasing beliefs and behaviors.

I cannot believe we are in the month of November my friends!

Once again, I am welcoming an amazing guest on the podcast that I believe will be very timely as we start reflecting on 2023 and preparing for 2024.

My friend, Yolanda Boyarin is an expert manifestation coach and I have brought her on to talk about both the science and beliefs associated with the idea of manifestation.

Many people hear the word “manifestation” and instantly check out.

They think it’s some kind of wishful thinking or “Woo” magic charm.

But here is the truth…

It’s not making a wish to the universe and then waiting around for it to happen.

It’s not some sort of magic spell where we conjure a pile of money or clients or weight loss while sitting around doing a séance.

It’s a process to move yourself towards a goal by harnessing the natural behavior pathways within our brain.

When we learn how to adjust our behaviors, we literally can control the brains’ ability to bring about our thoughts whether positive or negative.

You quite literally “manifest” what you think.

Today we talk about how Yolanda got into this fascinating field, the power of NLP and how we came to be acquainted.

We talk about the actual science behind manifestation.

And yes, we do talk about the energy aspects that some consider more “out there” but that has resonated and found success with many clients yielding 6 and 7 figure results.

So please relax and prepare to take in this extended episode we are excited to bring to you.

Today Yolanda and I talk about:

  • What it means to Manifest a desired result.
  • The Brain and Behavioral Science behind the Manifestation Process.
  • How you can start putting simple Manifestation practices into action today.

BOO! Happy Halloween to my amazing people!

My favorite part of this holiday time of year is experiencing them through the eyes of my children.

My husband and two of my girls LOVE the scary movies.

Which is fine…I suppose.

My other daughter and I are not fans of the scary movies.

But watching those scary movies with my kids allows me to have some new perspective on the emotion of fear.

You see I realized that your brain almost always looks at things in two ways.

There’s the simpler, more childlike part of our brain that tries to keep things easy and relatable.

And then there’s the adult portion of our brain where we sometimes overanalyze or overthink things and make us feel like we are all over the place.

So today I wanted to bring some of that dual perspective to the topic of fear in honor of Halloween.

You can almost think of the fears associated with Halloween as that smaller, simpler fear.

They are things we can immediately solve, rationalize and figure out.

But then there are the more “Adult” fears…

Problems of the world, worries about our business, anxiety in our relationships- there are tons of legitimate fears.

Today though, I want to focus in on the Fear of Failure and how to leverage this fear to move forward with your goals.

By the end of this episode, you will be equipped with some new thoughts and tools to help you if your find yourself confronting a fear of failure.

Come with me and discuss:

  • Understanding why fear is healthy.
  • Defining and respecting what the fear represents.
  • Learning how to leverage your fear for forward momentum.

Hi there my lovely people!

Have you ever wondered “Why do I feel stuck?”

I had a client recently that came to me with this feeling.

She had been making amazing progress on a few personal goals but then for one reason or another, sort of “slid backwards” as it were.

I was able to work with her to get to the root of where these feelings of being “stuck” were coming from and now she is back on track with her goals.

In my 20 years in the mental health and coaching field, I find it is a very common concern in my clients.

It got me thinking how many other folks are maybe struggling with similar feelings and don’t even really recognize it?

You don’t necessarily find yourself saying, “Hey I think I am stuck.”

It shows up in our behaviors…

Maybe we are setting a new fitness goal and we go running every day for 2 weeks straight and then we wake up one day feeling terrible and so we don’t go for a day.

And then another…

And another…

Or maybe you are working on a project at work and you have this burst of productivity for a few weeks but then feel like you “hit a wall” and don’t accomplish anything for several days.

Sometimes this just means you are tired and need a recovery day or three.

But sometimes, this is your brain self-sabotaging your progress.

Remember your brain can treat change like danger…we have talked about this before.

I have a process that I take my clients through which allows them to unlock their brain and move forward with their progression.

And in today’s episode, I am going to give you some of the starting part of that process which can help you get unstuck.

Today we will chat about:

  • Why we get stuck when making positive changes?
  • Sorting through normal recovery symptoms vs "stuck" symptoms.
  • A series of opening questions to help you get your brain unstuck.

So happy you are here my awesome people.

The days are getting shorter and colder- Fall is finally here for many of us!

Often times in the fall, we start to reflect on the year and plan potential changes.

Have you wondered why when we start to plan changes, sometimes our brain says “NO!?”

It’s because your brain is evolved to keep you safe and to our primal brain, “change” often meant “danger.”

See the brain intrinsically knows that change is unpredictable.

So that little voice in your head, that inner critic, pops out with those little sniping comments designed to keep you stuck.

“You can’t run a business, best not to try…”

“No one is gonna promote you, just stay where you are…”

“You’re not ready to be at that level…best to not rock the boat…”

These thoughts can create a lot of friction to our positive changes.

This friction can easily derail your plans for positive change.

In my 20 years of working with clients, I have seen this as an obstacle in many of my clients.

During that time, I have developed a formula that can help you overcome this inner critic and allow you to embrace change.

Can’t wait to share it with you today!

Today we chat about:

  • Why does the brain make change so hard?
  • How to recognize when your inner critic is intruding on your thoughts.
  • A simple formula you can use in real time to start combating that inner critic and regaining control of your power to change.

Here we are for another great week my lovely people!

Have you ever found yourself uncomfortable with a decision you have already made?

I know I have been there…

You see my husband and I decided to be a little crazy once upon a time and try to sell a house, have a baby, buy a house and then move into that new house all in the space of 1 week….

In the midst of that week, some things happened that made us question whether we should close on the new house.

But…we had already sold the old house…

And we had a newborn with a 3-year-old…

And we had movers scheduled to come in 3 days and we had to be out of the house in 5 days…

With absolutely no idea where else we would go if we DIDN’T close on the new house…

So…we decided we sort of HAD to go ahead and close on the new house so that we wouldn’t be homeless in 5 days.

Sounds crazy right?

With the benefit of hindsight, it WAS crazy and we should not have closed on the new house.

In the moment though, we didn’t really feel safe to change our mind.

To many plans had been set in motion to change at that last moment of discomfort.

Or so we thought.

This feeling is known as the sunk cost fallacy and it often affects decisions we make in a negative way.

So, on today’s episode I am going to give you some tools I have developed and arm my clients with in order to get yourself back to emotional neutrality when you might be having those sunk cost emotions.

On this episode:

  • What exactly is the Sunk Cost Fallacy and how can it manifest in our decision making?
  • Case study of a client who was experiencing a Sunk Cost bias in her career planning.
  • Tools you can use in your personal and professional life to help you combat Sunk Cost Fallacies and make clear decisions.

We are in the last quarter of the year and officially starting into the holiday season.

There are so many holidays coming up in the fall such as Halloween, Diwali, Rosh Hashana, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas to name a few.

Many emotions can come up during holidays and at times it can feel overwhelming.

So, I decided that we should talk about how to process our emotions.

And I am not gonna lie…I get vulnerable on this episode.

See I am going to give you something of a case study in my own life of managing emotions.

I share several events, one in my business and one in my personal life where I found myself very hurt and angry.

I take you through the phases of emotions that I had from these events.

I take you through the lows and then the highs once I was able to heal.

I’ll share with you the real world resources informed both from my personal experiences and my 20 years in the mental health profession.

I’ll help you learn how you can take control of those hard emotions with compassion for yourself.

Alright my awesome people, today we are back with a really fun interview with another fantastic coach.

I am welcoming Courtney Koenig, Certified Business Coach and Human Design Reader, to discuss the field known as Human Design.

Human Design is a recent development within the world of self-knowledge and personality testing systems.

You are probably already familiar with some of these systems such as the Myers- Briggs personality test or the Enneagram model of personality types.

Human Design works to help you better understand what might be your natural energy centers.

It can help you have a better grasp of what your natural productive energy cycles are so you can better plan your day/week/life.

Other aspects look at how you interact with those around you whether you naturally draw energy from others’ emotions or whether you project energy with your own emotions.

Now I know what you are thinking, “Julie, I come here for proven brain & psychological science and this feels very new-age woo-woo” and that thought is valid.

I am not here to claim that Human Design is 100% scientifically proven or peer reviewed.

But when it comes to dealing with people, not everything is or can be proven.

And millions of people across the planet have found Human Design as a helpful tool to understand your natural rhythms of emotions and productive energy.

I personally have found that Human Design resonated strongly with my innate energy but it might not for you.

So, I invite you to listen with an open mind and if it’s not for you, no harm no foul- I will be back next week with more amazing understanding of how your brain works.

But if you do find Courtney and I’s discussion to ring true for you, I provide Human Design readings to my clients which have been uniformly well received and we can set up a time to do your reading as well.

On Today's episode:

  • What is Human Design?
  • Human Design Energy types- what do they mean and how do they interact with others.
  • Ways that understanding your natural energy cycle can help you.

Hello again to another amazing day!

Today we are continuing our discussion through the nervous system and its sub systems.

Have you heard of the Vagal system?

The Vagal system is divided into two parts, the Ventral and Dorsal Vagal systems.

The Ventral Vagal system governs your social engagement.

It is responsible for scanning your environment and your interactions with others in a social situation and determining “Am I safe?”

In a nutshell, this is your Fight or Flight system in your everyday life and your dealings with others.

The Dorsal Vagal system is more centered around your Freeze response.

When you see people on social media talking about “Nervous System Regulation,” they are most frequently talking about this Dorsal Vagal system.

Without proper control and preventative measures, this system can keep us feeling overwhelmed and leads most frequently to those feelings of immobilization.

But as always, I am not just here to teach you WHAT these brain systems are.

I am also going to teach you real world, actionable steps you can take to feel more in control and keep these biological processes working FOR you instead of against you.

Can’t wait to have you on this final episode of Nervous System regulation!

On this episode, we cover:

  • The Ventral & Dorsal Vagal systems are what again?
  • Symptoms you should watch out for in trying to better regulate these two systems.
  • Box Breathing - a game changer skill that anyone can use to regulate your stress systems in real time.

How in the world are we halfway through September?!

The time is flying by but that won’t stop us from continuing our journey to better understand our brain.

This is week 2 in my deeper dive into how our nervous system reacts to stimuli.

Today we are talking about the “Autonomic Nervous System” and specifically the sympathetic & para-sympathetic response systems.

These two systems work in tandem like a yin and yang of nerve regulation.

The sympathetic system monitors and controls your fight or flight response or “Stress.”

When there is danger, it gets your body ready to react.

The para-sympathetic is the recovery part of the regulatory process.

Once you are safe and relaxed, this allows us to heal and not allow those stress signals to overload in our bodies.

By being more aware of how these systems work together, you can help to regulate ourselves.

If we find ourselves in a state of dysregulation these are the states of burnout, overwhelm or constant anxiety.

Your system stays on high alert and then it erodes your critical thinking and system readiness processes.

But don’t worry, I can help you figure out your stress recovery system and get your nervous system back to balance.

On this episode, we cover:

  • What are the Sympathetic & Para-Sympathetic systems in our body?
  • What happens if we stay too long in a heightened Sympathetic response state?
  • Proven methods for activating your Para-Sympathetic recovery processes to heal and balance your system.

Happy Labor Day my lovely people!

I hope you were able to do something that brings you joy during yesterday’s holiday.

Did you know that your brain NEEDS vacations? True Story!

I thought about this a lot when I visited my family a few weeks ago in Southeast Idaho and we went to Yellowstone Park.

Yellowstone is one of my all-time favorite places to recharge my physical and emotional reserves.

Driving through the mountains, watching the animals and seeing the beautiful streams and lakes just rejuvenates me at a primal level.

Now before you freak out, I am not saying they all need to be big expensive trips- no far from it.

Getting regular walks outside at your local city park can be incredibly beneficial just as much as the wonders of a national park.

What I am saying is that all of our brain’s need regular downtime in order to properly function and self-regulate.

Our brains send millions of signals across many systems in your body all day and all night.

And our nervous system essentially acts like a network of cell phone towers constantly relaying signals from the brain along the pathways of our body to all our various organs and cells.

The nervous system is broken into 2 parts- the Central Nervous System and the Peripheral Nervous System.

The Peripheral Nervous System is like a series of smaller towers composed of our various sensory cells.

And just like cell phone towers in real life, these systems require maintenance and upkeep to continue performing well.

For the month of September, we are going to talk about how to take better care of your brain and your nervous system.

Come chat with me and discuss:

  • What are the various parts of our nervous system and what do they do?
  • Why is it important to do "regular maintenance" on our nervous system?
  • What are the simple ways I can help better take care of my nervous system?

Greeting’s my lovely friends.

Once again, we are finishing another whirlwind month talking with an amazing expert.

This time we are discussing the critically important field of sleep health!

I am so happy to welcome Martha Lewis, Founder and CEO of TheSleepDetective.com to talk about why sleep is so important and potential issues to be aware of around sleep.

Sleep is fundamental to our biological processes and critically important to our brain health.

In thinking about sleep, have you ever asked yourself some of the questions below?

“I am doing everything right! Why aren’t I sleeping well?”

“How much sleep do I actually need anyways?”

“What is the difference between Sleep Apnea vs Insomnia?”

“Am I a Night Owl or an Early Riser? Is that even a real thing?”

“I used to do all nighters all the time, what has changed?”

If you have ever asked yourself these questions, have no fear we talk about all of these and many more in our August wrap up episode.

Today we dive into:

  • What do healthy sleep habits look like?
  • What symptoms should I watch for that might indicate un-healthy sleep habits?
  • Tricks, Tools and Resources you might need to consider if you want to improve your sleep.

Welcome back to another great week!

I am fresh off a speaking engagement for a large conference of highly accomplished professional women.

The primary topic of the conference was best practice in the fields of project and proposal management…

But they also reserved a number of their workshops for topics related to more generalized leadership skills.

I was invited to speak and present one of my most popular keynote topics on Imposter Syndrome and its effects on productivity.

As I got closer to the day of the presentation, I found myself having my own versions of Imposter Syndrome pop up…

I was told I had the highest numbers of sign-ups for this topic by the event organizer 2 days before..

And for a MOMENT, some of my old imposter syndrome thoughts came through.

“Oh, my goodness that’s a lot of people. What if I mess up my presentation?”

“These women come from STEM and Business backgrounds, what could I possibly teach them?”

All those thoughts swirled around trying to pull me under…

But I used my tools, got my thoughts under control and went in fully prepared.

Everything went smoothly, engagement was high and people seemed to be resonating.

But even then, I waited for the post event feedback…

A day later it came and the feedback I received was…. universal acclaim.

“This session was for made for me!”

“By far my favorite session at the conference”

“I feel seen and called out in a good way”

Now…why am I sharing this?

Another week is upon us my lovely friends!

I cannot believe how quickly the summer has flown by.

I am really hoping you have been finding some value in my theme of productivity for the month of August.

We are getting into a potentially hectic time of year for some people.

People are getting back into the grove of work from summer vacations.

Everyone is prepping for school to start.

And I have already started seeing companies advertising Christmas Light installation.

Face it- this time of year can be pretty crazy unless we keep it all organized.

So, in keeping with my ongoing productivity theme, let’s talk about how our brain thinks about organization and what it means to individual people.

If you are like me a few years ago, if your space is unorganized then you internalize that chaos and it drains and demotivates you.

And then when I try to organize, it can quickly feel overwhelming if I tackle it all at once.

So today I want to take you down memory lane a bit to go over my journey of getting organized and realizing that like everything, nothing is one size fits all.

I had to learn what organizational philosophies and tricks worked for me and which ones didn’t.

In the process, I have gathered some wisdom on how to get yourself organized that I am excited to share with you today.

Today we will discuss:

  • Lessons learned on my organizational journey
  • Understanding your brains organizational systems and how to hack them for your benefit
  • Thoughts on common organizational tools & tricks

Greetings and welcome back!

Procrastination.

What’s your response to that word? Shame? Guilt? Judged?

Interestingly as I was pondering all of the thoughts we frequently have around procrastination, I realized there is a lot negativity and judgment.

We place a lot of qualitatively punitive language around this word and concept.

We make procrastination some sort of factor in our net worth.

When we look at our own procrastination, we use phrases like “I am lazy” or “I’ll figure that out later…”

My friends, those phrases are lies.

You are not lazy.

Procrastination is most commonly a symptom of burnout and or anxiety.

We procrastinate when something else in our system is off.

It might be an unconscious admission that we are unclear how to proceed to accomplish the task.

Or it could also be an involuntary stress response that forces us to rest.

Whatever it is, it almost certainly is not a case of a person just choosing to be unproductive.

So today, in keeping with my theme of productivity for the month of August, I am going to lead a more neutral discussion on procrastination.

Today we will talk about:

  • What procrastination actually is
  • What is our brain trying to to tell us when we are chronically procrastinating
  • Ways you can reduce your tendency to procrastinate

Can you believe it is August??

It seems the year is flying by and we find ourselves moving into the second half of the year.

We find ourselves having all sorts of frenetic energy as we are coming back off of vacations and preparing for kids to go back to school.

Businesses are often doing their forecasts for what the rest of the year is going to look like as well.

And for many we assess how productive we have been in the first half of the year as we prepare for the second half.

With all of those thoughts, it is very easy to start to measure our success by the productivity we are having.

Now there is nothing necessarily wrong with this.

However, like with so many things, our thoughts surrounding productivity can be a sign of burnout if left unregulated.

As you know, sometimes our brains are not very nice to us. Unchecked your brain can lead to a state of over-productive stress that leads to feelings of imposter syndrome and burnout.

If you find yourself looking around and constantly seeing more things on the checklist, this episode is for you.

If you always think that you haven’t done enough even in the midst of high levels of objective productivity, this episode is for you.

If you get to the weekend and have no energy for your family or beloved hobbies, this episode is definitely for you.

Today we crack the code of what is going on in your brain with these thoughts of simultaneous productivity and anxiety and some ways you can start to do something about them to lower the feelings of overwhelm.

Come join us for today's discussion:

  • The common symptoms of burnout and high functioning depression
  • What your brain and body could be telling you with these symptoms
  • Tools my clients implement to regain control of the overwhelm

Have you ever wondered why you buy the things you buy?

I mean sometimes, you buy certain things simply due to lack of choice or because it fills a very immediate need.

But often, we have options and time to think about it.

So how do we choose from the veritable sea of options available to us?

Maria Platusic is a brand marketing expert with expertise in the science of design and branding and today we are going to discuss the brain science of branding and design.

You know those ubiquitous golden arches that seem to be on the corner of every other block in the city and your kids ALWAYS want you to stop at?

What if I told you there is very intentional brain science behind the color scheme for that brand?

Yellow is proven to create the emotion most commonly associated with joy in the brain and Red is shown to trigger your appetite response.

Those golden arches are quite literally scientifically calibrated to make you happy and hungry so you are more likely to come grab a burger or some fries.

Another example is the color blue.

It is known to trigger feelings of dependability and you can see prolific use of the color blue in popular brands such as in the credit card, computing or car industries.

Understanding some of the science of branding can help you not only to break the rules and make your brand stand out but also make sure you are a more informed consumer.

Come join us to learn about:

  • The impact of colors and shapes on brand design
  • How to leverage well known colors and shapes in your own business branding
  • The branding landscape is always changing- Core Value Branding explained

“So, are you an Introvert or an Extrovert?”

Have you been asked this question before?

Maybe you have asked this question of yourself as you pondered your social interactions for the day.

Regardless of how you first encountered some form of this question the concepts of Introvert and Extrovert have become innocuous in western society.

You see human’s love to label and categorize things.

I don’t make the rules- that’s just the way it is.

In 1923, Carl Jung the famed Swiss Psychiatrist published a paper where he brought the terms into mainstream usage within the field of Psychology.

Now we all know Introverts like to keep to themselves and Extroverts love to be around people, right?

Well…. it’s not that simple.

As so many things in brain and social science, there is a lot more nuance than a simple binary concept can convey.

For example, did you know that most people have a behavior flip in certain social situations?

The extrovert might withdraw unexpectedly from a social situation one would assume they would thrive in.

The introvert suddenly can become the life of the party when they are surrounded by close friends or the conversation turns to a topic that they feel extremely confident in.

And on today’s episode I will also be discussing the relatively new term in the field known as the “Ambivert.”

Today we will talk about:

  • The unspoken messages and preferences our culture communicates about Introverts vs Extroverts
  • Understanding what the terms actually mean as opposed to what we have been socialized to think they mean
  • What is an Ambivert

Today’s episode concludes our 3-week overview of our three circles of health.

To review, we covered the physical circle of health and the importance of the dopamine system.

The why and how our brain physically interacts with stimuli like sleep and nutrition.

Then we talked about the emotional circle of health.

Things like setting healthy boundaries and knowing that it’s ok to have different feeling than others about holidays for example.

Just as our brains need the boundaries of good sleep and nutrition, they also need boundaries around our emotions.

Finally, today we are going to discuss what I call your circle of social health.

You might think of this as your relationship circle.

Everyone has different circles of relationships which allow them varying levels of social safety and health.

For example, hopefully you feel totally safe with your spouse or partner.

They should make you feel validated and comfortable with openness and total social health and safety.

Everyone then has bigger and bigger circles for groups of other social connections such as family, friends, colleagues, church goers and alumni to name a few common examples.

In each of those circles, you may without different aspects of yourself in order to feel safe.

Today we talk about all of this and more as we explore the importance of our social circle of health.

Come listen as we discuss the following:

• Reviewing the three circles of health

• Overview of what your social/relationship circle of health actually is

• The value and importance of having boundaries in your social circle of health

Happy 4th of July Holiday to my USA listeners!

Holidays can stir many emotions for people.

Holidays hopefully serve as a time for relaxation, celebration and reflection.

For some though, holidays are filled with “shoulds” that potentially create anxiety.

The “shoulds” might take the form of feelings of obligations.

I SHOULD want to go see family for the big celebration.

I SHOULD work myself to the bone to host a big party at my home without asking for help.

Or it might even be deeper.

I SHOULD enjoy these fireworks even though they stir up deeply painful memories and emotions.

All of these feelings come from a place of not knowing our limits and not setting appropriate boundaries.

Remember the little airplane safety video they play every time you fly in the United States?

What does it always tell you about oxygen masks?

We need to put our own oxygen mask on first before we try to help someone else.

Today we are going to talk about putting on our emotional oxygen masks first.

As I always say, Give Yourself Grace and Know Your Limits.

Come listen as we discuss the following:

• Why its ok to have different feelings about culturally accepted social obligations

• Healthy reasons why you need to prioritize yourself at times

• Ways you can start to set loving boundaries and limits with yourself and others

Let’s talk about drugs.

Drugs that make you happy.

No…not recreational drugs.

I have not gone off the proverbial deep end.

We are gonna look at some of the basic chemical processes in the brain designed to create the sensation we call “pleasure.”

We have touched on this lightly in the past but we are going to take a deeper dive today as we are in the midst of the summer season.

Your body, more particularly, your brain has a set of natural processes designed to make you feel good under certain stimuli.

Certain intersections of behaviors will literally tell your brain to activate your pleasure centers and release dopamine.

Dopamine is our brain’s natural “happy” chemical and it is vital for our continued health and happiness.

There are known ways to trigger your brain to release these chemicals and improve your state of well-being.

This episode starts a mini-series on the three circles of overall wellness.

Today’s focus is the circle of our physical health and how our brain assists in those processes.

As I always say, Give Yourself Grace and Know Your Limits.

Holy Cow! 50 Podcasts!

Can you believe it friends?

We have been learning and talking about the brain for almost a full year!

I have a confession…

I am going to make this episode about me.

I know I know…you are rolling your eyes.

You see, we have been talking about how our thoughts, feelings and behaviors are influenced by and connected to the brain.

And along the way, I have shared some tidbits about my journey.

But today, I am going to get very vulnerable and share with you my beginning into this journey.

Now I am not talking about where I learned about the brain.

Let’s be honest, you don’t want to hear about college and it will make for very boring podcasting.

No, what I am talking about is the beginning of how I knew that an aspect of my brain was out of alignment.

That realization led me on a journey of emotional health and fulfillment.

Along the way, I realized I wanted to help other people who might not understand these same feelings and thoughts I was having.

So today is a bit of a year in review and the story of why I started this podcast.

And lastly, we will have a call to action.

It has been said, everyone has a day where they have to make a decision to either stay stuck or move forward.

So as we talk about my decision to no longer be stuck, I want you to consider if you also need some help getting unstuck.

If you do, book a consult today and let's get started.

Last week’s conversation with Alyssa Hall was so powerful I knew I wanted it to continue.

This time around, we are going to dive into another oft misunderstood topic that is very prevalent in the media.

And that word is Privilege.

Wait! Don’t check out on me…

Still here?

Good because this is another important conversation…

Privilege is a word that get’s thrown around frequently and generates a lot of intense emotions.

With Alyssa’s help, we are going to de-construct some of those thoughts and hopefully help you to better understand what it is and what it isn’t.

We jump into a number of important questions to really further your awareness and comprehension of things like…

Why acknowledging your privilege is not an insult or saying your life hasn’t had challenges.

Seeing privilege as an opportunity to include others rather than divide us.

Understanding types of privilege that we may not know exist.

Reviewing some real-life examples where small but impactful moments of privilege have come into play in the lives of Alyssa and Julie.

Learning how we can help society move forward on this issue in ways that are non-confrontational and comfortable.

Once again, I am grateful to my friend Alyssa Hall for joining me for another impactful conversation.

It’s another longer session and I invite you to reflect and introspect.

If you need to break it up into smaller listens, I totally understand.

As I always say, Give Yourself Grace and Know Your Limits.

Welcome to the month of June!

Today I have an epic episode for you.

I am beyond excited to host my friend, Alyssa Hall, a Corporate Anti-Racism Consultant and Leadership Coach, to the podcast.

We are going to cover a wide breadth of extremely important topics today.

Bias- this word has become very charged in our culture and it is often very misunderstood.

What does it mean?

What is it and more importantly, what ISN’T it?

Where do these biases come from?

Is it inherently negative to have a bias?

Is it ok to even talk about bias?

Today we are going to try to cover the gauntlet on this topic and many of the types of bias including:

Unconscious Bias. Confirmation Bias. Affinity Bias. Beauty Bias and more.

We are working through these tough topics and beyond.

And let me be honest…. we are going to get vulnerable and share where even we fail.

Honestly, recognizing where even we, as trained and trusted experts, fall short is part of the way we help the world at large better discuss these topics.

We talk about the guilt and shame that can occur when we try to recognize these faults in ourselves or society.

We talk about setting the boundaries and personal limits on these topics so that you can have productive conversations.

I do want to acknowledge upfront; this conversation might bring out some strong emotions in yourself as you self-reflect.

And this is a longer episode. So, I absolutely give you permission to take this conversation in pieces.

Give yourself grace and know your limits.

But PLEASE do listen to it. Even it takes multiple sessions, it’s a conversation worth having.

I can’t believe May is almost OVER!

It’s time to continue building on our discussions around burnout and thought errors.

Overthinking…

When you read and think of that word, what comes to mind?

For me Overthinking feels like walking into a store that is completely unorganized.

The aisles are unorganized and the items are all over the place.

How can you possibly find anything and effectively get what you need from such a store?

You won’t? At best you might randomly stumble across one or two of the items you need on your list before angrily leaving the store and looking elsewhere

A brain that suffers from overthinking can yield similar results.

Our thoughts become totally jumbled under an ever-growing maze of runaway thoughts.

Soon we are frustrated that we have expended great mental energy and yet yielded very little in the way of effective results.

This has shown up in my clients in many ways.

Maybe it’s overthinking so much you are unable to relax.

You find yourself sitting at the beach and still mentally “sitting at the office.”

Or you are trying to organize a project and constantly thinking of all the things that can go wrong rather than formulating the plan for how it can go right.

When it manifests, often our brain can freeze and be unable to make a decision.

Or it might chronically procrastinate making the choice because of the rampant overthinking.

There are so many ways that it can manifest.

If you feel you are suffering from this or that you have this tendency, first I just want to say that I am here for you.

We will dive into this topic today and I will share a few high-level strategies that I have employed with myself and used to help my clients use to confront this runaway overthinking.

Today Let's Explore:

  • How overthinking frequently manifests in our lives.
  • The brain's role in these chronic runaway thoughts.
  • Several strategies I and my clients have used to confront and control these overthinking tendencies.

“I should have known better…”

This is one of the cruelest things our brain can say to us.

This life is one of experience and learning.

It’s about growing and hopefully moving past our mistakes.

Telling yourself essentially “I shouldn’t have had to learn that; I should have already known it” is antithetical to the process.

Unfortunately, your brain is REALLY good at creating those unhelpful thoughts.

In fact, on any given day, it is estimated that our brains have 60,000 thoughts.

And because our brains are evolved to keep us safe, approximately 80% of the thoughts we have are negative.

That’s 48,000 negative thoughts…. PER DAY.

So many of our brain’s natural processes are designed around fear responses.

And remember from some of our earlier work, when those thoughts are continuous repeated, they can turn into conditioned beliefs.

So what are these thought errors Julie?

Some of the big ones I have seen in my clients are things like:

“I magnify things too much. I overstate and under-deliver both in my personal and professional life”

Another I see frequently is “Overgeneralization.”

Things like “This ALWAYS happens” or “I NEVER succeed.”

Today we will go through these and several more that I commonly see in my counseling & coaching practice.

But it’s not all bad.

I am also excited to share a powerful and simple mental tool you can use every day in real time to challenge negative thoughts.

It seems really straightforward and basic and it is.

But don’t let that fool you into thinking simple does not mean effective.

This exercise has been very effective in helping my clients change their conditioned beliefs and unlock new avenues of success.

So let’s all take a deep breath together and dive into our Common Thought Errors together.

Today we cover:

  • Common Thought Errors that create our conditioned beliefs over time.
  • My own history with some of these very same thoughts.
  • The simple 3 step tool we can use to start challenging and changing our thought errors.

Ready for another week my Brain Warriors?

We are back for the conclusion of my two-part series on Burnout.

Last week we discussed how we can recognize some of those symptoms and causes of burnout and excess stress.

Hopefully you were able to spend a few quiet moments thinking about where your stressors come from and whether they are internal or external.

And in examining that, I recognize some of you might be feeling a bit overwhelmed with this level of introspection.

I hear you and validate that.

I have been on the same path and had those similar feelings.

I am here for you.

Today we are going to cover a number of tools that are proven to help reduce your stress levels.

Some of these tools you can implement right away like Box Breathing and Meditation.

Some of my recommendations may require you to talk with your doctor and your employer about longer term needs.

Some of you may feel you need to work with me directly to overcome this and I am here as a resource for that intensive help.

If you are feeling these feelings, remember that you did not get to this place of burnout overnight.

So, you need to give yourself permission to take the time it will need to heal.

Take a breath, pause and let’s talk about what we can do about it.

Join me to further our discussion:

  • Review the symptoms and causes of burnout & extreme stress.
  • Discuss some short-term techniques you can employ to help start managing and healing.
  • Learn about longer term solutions that you may need to consider including your diet, healthcare, employment situation and one-on-one coaching.

Welcome back my amazing people!

“I don’t care…”

I remember telling my colleague this after meeting with a client while working for large, private non-profit social work agency.

I had been pushing myself non-stop both professionally and personally for about 6 years.

Constant travel covering a region that included half of Texas and part of Louisiana.

No boundaries taking any calls at any time including meeting clients for emergencies in the middle of the night.

And all this with a newborn baby girl.

My colleague looked at me and said, “That sounds like burnout..”

Burnout can show up in different ways in different people.

Mental disengagement from others or work.

Constant exhaustion even when we “do all the right things to be healthy.”

And for others it might be more subtle.

A constant slow spiral of decreasing productivity and performance in all areas of our lives.

When I experienced burnout, I was in denial at first.

I don’t get burnout. I can just “buck up” and work harder.

Unfortunately, that just prolonged my healing but thankfully not forever.

I was able to overcome my corporate burnout and start my own business on my terms which lets me listen to my needs more.

Today we are starting my two-part series on burnout with understanding those symptoms and identifying where they are coming from.

Let's talk about:

  • Learning the simple reality and universality of burnout.
  • Understanding where burnout out originates in our bodies in our brain and hormonal systems.
  • Recognizing the symptoms of burnout and identifying internal and external causes.

Welcome back my amazing people!

Teenagers…

What goes through your head when I say the word “Teenagers?”

Today I have my good friend Jennifer Delliquadri, Life Coach and Teen Parenting expert, here to hopefully answer some of the stray thoughts and questions that go through your head when you hear the word, “teenagers.”

“What happened to the personality of my little kid?”

“How are their brain’s different from adult brains?”

“My teen is SO MATURE, why did they do that?”

“It worked fine when I was a teenager, why can’t you do it the way we did growing up?”

If you are like me and you have teenagers, you have probably asked one or more of these questions about your child.

Teenagers are amazing. They are learning how to be people.

But as amazing as they are, they DO need us.

They need us to understand them.

They need us to teach them.

They need us to fuel their confidence.

They need us to help teach them empathy and respect.

If you have a teenager, today’s show is for you.

If you have a child who will be a teenager one day, today’s show is for you.

We talk about all of these topics and more on today’s extended episode of the show today.

Come join me and Jennifer Delliquadri on today’s extended episode.

Today we discuss:

  • Why teenagers aren't totally rational yet and how that should impact your parenting
  • Why your teens need to know that their parent's are always a "Safe Space"
  • The importance of teaching the balance of respecting others and personal confidence in your teens

Let me know if this sounds familiar….

You are a business owner or working professional.

You have experienced some level of success and accomplishment.

And while you really like having this success…secretly you are EXHAUSTED.

Maybe you didn’t say no to a particular project and now you are staying until 8 or 9 every night at the office…

Maybe you were so desperate for clients that you were accepting any and every person who walked through the door...

Or perhaps you just simply grew so FAST that you didn’t know how to control it.

So now you are stressed and you are working constantly but it doesn’t seem like you ever get to stop and appreciate that success.

This happens to MANY of us. You are not alone.

In your efforts to respect everyone else’s needs, whether it be a customer or a colleague, you forgot to respect the most important person’s needs.

Your own.

Along the path of success, you neglected to construct proper boundaries for your business or your career.

“I will lose clients if I don’t set boundaries!” your brain tells you.

“My boss will be upset with me if I try to set expectations now” you think to yourself.

“It’s too late for me to have boundaries…” you say to yourself in defeat.

I am going to clue you in on some hard truths right now.

All three of those statements above…. are false.

Last week we discussed the idea of a fixed vs growth mindset and how our brains cultivate either path in our mindset.

We learned that we can literally train our brain to grow stronger in the mindset that we can choose to accomplish more in our lives and in our business.

This week, we take that foundation and look at how our brain impacts the strategy we take in our business.

There are many gurus out there who will tell you some version of “You just need the right mindset to have a successful business…”

Or my other favorite, “I can show you the ONE TRICK you need in your business…”

Here’s my hot take on this subject…

The gurus telling you they have the one special trick are wrong…

And the gurus telling you to “just get the right mindset and your business will work” are wrong as well.

The truth is you need to be in YOUR right mindset.

And the truth is you need to have the right strategy for YOUR business.

That’s the truth.

No two businesses are exactly alike.

Someone else’s strategy might have some elements you can replicate and learn from.

And someone else’s experiences with their mindset might have some lessons you can draw upon.

But at the end of the day, you need the right mindset for YOU and the right strategy for YOUR business.

And that friends, is something I am an expert at helping people discover about themselves and their business.

I have done this in numerous unrelated industries with people in positions from part-time solopreneur all the way up to CFOs for billion-dollar corporations.

So come join me today as we talk about some of the basics of finding your business strategy.

This episode we explore:

  • Reviewing how our mindset trains our brains to grow.
  • The dangers of following too many other “expert voices” rather than developing a strategy unique to your business.
  • Managing the 4 roles you need to implement effective strategy in your business whether big or small.

“If you believe you can, you can. If you believe you can’t, you can’t”

How many times have we heard this or something very similar to this sentiment?

It’s a simple statement and because of that simplicity, it can be easy to dismiss.

This phrase speaks to the power of a fixed vs growth mindset.

Much is made about having the right mindset in our personal lives and in our relationships.

Rightfully so. How we think about ourselves and experiences is pivotal in living the life we want.

Remember that word “Neuroplasticity” we learned about A LONG time ago in Episode 12?

Our brains grow and magnify the set of beliefs we internalize about the world and ourselves.

If we believe we are clumsy, then we will often find ourselves being clumsy and magnify those thoughts.

We then shun activities where we perceive our clumsiness will keep us from excelling and it suddenly becomes a self-fulfilled fact.

Our clumsiness becomes a fixed mindset and it has the potential to permanently shift how we live our lives to avoid situations where we have already decided we will fail.

But this same mental process that can create a fixed mindset can be used to create a growth mindset.

We can magnify moments of competence. We then find ourselves eagerly solving problems in our business as our confidence fuels our competence.

When we don’t immediately have the answer for a business need, instead of letting it stop us, we let it empower us.

We seek out the experts we want to be like and emulate them.

The more we realize that any problem we encounter has a solution, the greater our brain will find the path to that solution.

This is the growth mindset and it is key to business success.

I have gone through this journey of fixed and growth mindsets in my own business.

I know how easy it can be to get side tracked or seemingly stuck with pitfalls.

But that’s why I am here.

I want to keep you from making those same mistakes I made in my business journey.

You never have to try and navigate this on your own.

This month we are focusing on building the right business mindset for permanent success.

Today’s episode we explore:

  • Reviewing how our brain creates a mindset and why
  • The difference between a fixed mindset and a growth mindset
  • How we can start to shape our thoughts to fuel greater productivity in our business.

I am once again welcoming an amazing guest on today’s podcast!

Shannon Brome-Ward, a money-mindset coach, here to help us better understand and take control of our relationship with money.

Money is a seeming routine aspect of our lives yet it is viewed so differently by so many.

Sometimes in seemingly healthy ways…

A tool we use to acquire our needs and fulfill our wants.

A way to quantitatively measure the value of our productive efforts.

Other times though, in ways that are unhealthy…

A measure of our self-worth…

A way to judge and look down on others…

For some it occupies none of our time. For others, thoughts of money are all consuming.

This isn’t strictly an adult phenomenon either.

Our thoughts and relationships to money can be formed very early in our lives.

Even my 8-year-old daughter understands that getting money for her birthday usually means she can trade it for new things…. usually barbies or squishmallows.

Regardless of how much time we spend thinking about money, we almost NEVER spend enough time talking about money.

We may talk around it. We might let people on TV with tons of money try to tell us regular folks about money.

But we spend precious little time having intimate conversations about money. And realistically, we need to talk about it more in order to have more power over it.

So, let’s have a conversation about money today.

Come with Shannon and I as we discuss:

  • Why is it so important to have more open conversations about money
  • How to control our brain's narrative about money
  • A Simple 4 step method of teaching our children about money

Learn more about my awesome guest Shannon at her website, www.thewholebudget.com, and how you can have better thoughts about money.

I truly hope you have received some value throughout these last two month’s series on what I am calling “Self-Image.”

We have talked about creating the right expectations for ourselves.

We have discussed big hot topics such as Perfectionism, Imposter Syndrome, Judgement of others and of ourselves and the fear that can go with all of that.

We discussed how to take all of that learning and bring out your most authentic self which leads us to this month.

Today our final topic for the month of March is the culmination of trying to tackle all of those previous thoughts and emotions in our brain.

It can be summed up in a word.

Confidence.

Everything we have been talking about leads to the positive result of increased and resilient confidence.

Confidence in your abilities and achievements.

Confidence in your relationships.

Confidence in your actions and intentions.

Like so many things, it’s not always easy to keep your sense of confidence.

There are many gurus and mantras out there and it’s hard to know what voice to follow or what will actually work.

Today though, I share 2 critical hacks I have learned and developed over 20 years in the mental health space.

20 years of real-world success with hundreds of clients backs these 2 tools I discuss today.

That’s it. 2 Hacks that can you can implement everyday to see results fast in your confidence mindset.

This episode we share:

•Why Confidence is so important in our day-to-day mindset.

Another glorious day my awesome people!

I have spent the last few episodes talking about how thoughts ourselves and from others effect how we show up in our lives.

I am talking about Authenticity.

Authenticity...

This buzz word is thrown around frequently in today's world.

We want our experts to be authentic.

We want our products to be authentic.

We want the people in our lives to be authentic.

WE want to be authentic.

Frankly this is easier said than done. I have struggled with this for much of my life...

In my youth, I often suppressed my voice and feelings because I knew my thoughts went against the norms.

My authentic self was not safe to share...

In my early professional life, I held my tongue because I was unfortunately part of an organization that frequently did not value the input of their women employees.

Even in my personal life, I realize looking back that I at times would associate with certain groups of people who spent much of their time speaking negatively about others around them.

And I found myself mimicking this negative talk to fit in...

Thankfully, I have made some very conscious choices to move more into my authentic voice.

It has meant some major changes...

Career changes...

Relationship changes...

I know what you are thinking.

"Julie, those changes sound scary!"

It's true, change can be scary but I promise we can navigate them together.

Authenticity requires vulnerability. Let me be your guide to start this shift toward your more authentic you.

Let's dive into the following today:

  • The various ways we may inadvertently suppress our authenticity
  • Why our brain sometimes thinks it is easier to push away rather than embrace our true selves
  • Tools I have found helpful in re-discovering and nurturing my authentic identity

Hello my wonderful people!

I am 6ft tall and I have tall girl energy.

But I have not always embraced my height….

You see, when I was younger, I was judged negatively for being a “tall girl.”

Jolly Green Giant was the most frequent of the taunts thrown my way.

So, I found myself trying to hunch and minimize my height.

Later I came to appreciate my height. In fact, my husband is 6’3” and LOVES that I am tall.

We have been talking of late about judgements we make on ourselves.

Perfectionism….

Imposter Syndrome….

Some of the many ways we can unduly judge ourselves….

Today though, I want to pivot to discuss and think about how our brain reacts to the judgement of others and what we can do about it.

Because we are social creatures, we seek out relationships with others.

Even if we are introverted, we have an innate longing to belong and be accepted.

In seeking that connection, we end up making ourselves vulnerable to being rejected and potentially judged by others.

As I have reflected on this topic, I have been recalled and reflected on certain times I have been unjustly judged by others.

A random stranger on a plane commenting about my newborn daughter.

A therapy client saying I couldn’t possibly help them because I wasn’t in their exact situation.

A Religious Leader at Church openly mocking and gossiping about me while I stood only a few feet away listening unbeknownst to her…

These moments of wrongful critique had the potential to hurt and fester in my brain…

Thankfully, I had some tools that allowed me to let them go for the false examinations they were.

Let’s discuss those tools together so that you never have to be weighed down by the bias of others.

Come with me and examine:

· How and why our brains react to the judgement of others

· Recognizing whose judgement we should value

· How to keep our perspective when faced with prejudiced judgement

Once again, I am honored to have a special guest with me today!

Darlynn Childress is the Calm Momma Coach specializing in helping mom’s raise emotionally healthy kids without going crazy.

Now I know what you are thinking…

This is a podcast about our brain…

What does that have to do with parenting?

Well how we react to our children is very much a function of deep, sometimes instinctual processes in the brain.

And how our children act and react to us as adults is likewise a function of their growing brain.

Did you know your brain can identify your children as a hazard? As a danger to you even?

When your children are screaming or crying, have you ever found yourself tensing before you force yourself to relax and then try and see to the child’s need?

This is a normal process. It doesn’t mean you are a bad parent.

It means your brains instinctual defense mechanisms put you into a flight or fight mode at the sound of a screaming child.

Your brain spiked your adrenaline, tensed your muscles and heightened your senses to protect you from a perceived threat.

In that moment, you are in what’s called an “Activated Stress Response.”

Did you know that you cannot offer a compassionate space to your children when you are in an activated stress response?

There is so much to learn on this week’s episode. I can’t wait for you to listen.

Today Darlynn and I discuss:

· How can our children trigger our brain’s without meaning to?

· The science of meltdowns and how they impact the brains of both child and parent?

· Think-Feel-Do. What does it mean and how does it help us understand and parent our children better?

Welcome back my friends!

Early in my coaching career, I had an extremely accomplished, high-level professional client with an all-too-common problem.

They were top of their graduating class. They had quickly moved up the corporate ladder in a very competitive field.

On paper, they basically were in the middle of a career that many of us would call a “Unicorn.”

Yet they did not believe they actually deserved the fruit of their extremely hard work…

They assumed that any day, someone at work would prove them a fraud.

They were sure a mistake was going to oust them to their colleagues as not really deserving the success they had.

How could this happen you might think?

Sadly, it can happen all too easily…

Early in their life, someone told them that they simply had gotten lucky when they had accomplished something.

And with that one ill-conceived comment, a deep-rooted belief was created in their mind….

The doubt festered into something we know as Imposter Syndrome….

Thankfully we were able to work out a plan to confront and deconstruct this belief.

We created a plan to attack these false thoughts and the feelings associated with them.

We rebuilt the confidence in their own self, their competence and gave them the tools they needed to thrive.

I can’t wait to share more with you today on this far too common problem.

Welcome back my friends!

I truly hope you are moved with positive thoughts about yourself and your relationship with your body after last weeks discussion.

Bringing that topic away from an intimate personal subject and back to how does this apply in my business or general life, lets talk about Perfectionism.

I have struggled with this often in my life.

When I was younger and doing my schooling, I expected straight A’s from myself all the time.

Anything less than an A wasn’t even on my radar as an acceptable outcome.

Then I took a college course that really challenged this expectation…

See I took 18 credits in one semester and accidentally ended up in an engineering math class…

I am not an engineer….and I wasn’t going to school to be one.

See where the problem could be?

Speaking with a loved one about my struggles, I was reminded that acknowledging I am not perfect is ok.

I came to realize that I had some really negative thoughts about my identity related to this perfectionism

I wasn’t enough….

If I can’t get all A’s in every class, who am I?

But I overcame these thoughts by learning to manage them and keep things in perspective.

Whether its in your business or your personal life, it is so important to model your thoughts appropriately.

Today’s episode is critical for those of us who hold high standards for ourselves and others.

Today we shine a spotlight on:

· What is perfectionism and where do those thoughts come from?

· How does perfectionism hold us back in our life and business?

· What can I do to change these thoughts while still maintaining high standards?

Welcome back friends!

Last week we discussed how to react when our goals don’t quite go according to plan. In that discussion we touched briefly on this week’s topic- learning how to change expectations.

Now I know what you are thinking….

“But Julie I don’t want to settle! I don’t want to surrender my dreams!!”

I hear you.

And I promise, I am not teaching you to settle.

I know what it’s like. You see, I have settled in the past. I played small because that’s what I was taught…

I was taught to play small in my business. I was taught to play small in my personal life.

Playing small was my expectation…

And it nearly broke me….

You see…deep down I did not want to play small.

I wanted my personal relationships to be so much more than they were.

And I wanted my business to do so much more for my family.

So I learned how our brain regulates and creates these expectations.

Like so many things in our brain, it’s built around our safety triggers. So, I realized I could hack my brain over time to stop playing small and set big expectations for myself.

I can’t wait to share this with you on today’s episode.

Today we explore:

· Delving into the way we create our short- and long-term expectations about ourselves

· Working through the simple steps we can take to create new expectations

· The importance of flexibility and self-examination when working to create new expectations

How are your goals going friend?

I had to start and stop this episode multiple times because it just didn’t feel right.

Which is ironic given the topic for this week’s episode. So even I have to stop and take my own advice sometimes.

Sometimes no matter how well we plan, things can go awry. And then our brain can actually make it worse if we don’t understand how it works….

Remember back to some of our earlier episodes when I taught you that our brain defaults to keep you safe?

When something we planned goes differently than the plan, our brain naturally thinks that the new thing we are trying to accomplish must be wrong.

So how do we stop our brains from doing this? I am so glad you asked.

Because let me tell you, I have been there. I have made plans and they did not go as expected.

And I was disheartened...

I was confused...

I wanted to turn back...

Then I realized what my brain was doing and learned how to prepare my brain for those thoughts and feelings.

I figured out how to make sure my brain was ready for potential failures and by preparing my brain, suddenly the potential for failure wasn’t a failure at all…..

The possibility of something going wrong actually became a part of the potential plan and suddenly my brain was working WITH me to accomplish these goals instead of against me.

I want to show you how to do this as well so listen right now how to train your brain to be ok with variations to the plan.

Today we explore:

· Recognizing how our brain feels about changes in our plans

· Training our brain to help you overcome unexpected obstacles instead of retreating from them

· Making sure failures are an acceptable part of your goal planning

Welcome back to week 3 of my Goal Setting & Keeping Series!

Did you know that having negative experiences in the past with goal setting can sabotage your future goal setting and keeping? Your thoughts and feelings about goals have a massive impact on how successful they will be.

As I have had to set goals for my business over the years, I realized that I had to confront some bad thoughts from the past.

You see, early in my career, I spent a great deal of time working and volunteering with a very large bureaucratic organization and we set A LOT of goals.

And because we spend so much time focused on goals, numbers and metrics- I grew to really resent and hate them because of how impersonal they felt.

You have to remember- I am a Therapist and Social Worker. I care about the people. In everything I do, I am trying to create a human connection.

Then I figured it out. I figured out how to modify the normal goal setting systems to focus more on connection.

Connection between me and those I am trying to help. Connection between the goal and my feelings about the goal.

This has led to amazing breakthrough growth in my life and my business and I am so excited to share it with you.

Today we explore:

· Reviewing our past feelings and experiences on goal setting and how they might create a block for your successful future goal setting and keeping

· Flipping the narrative of goal setting to focus on the human connection to make your goals matter to you instead of just being another checklist item

· Training your brain how to create the big impact goals that are fun and authentic to yourself

Hi my lovelies! I am so excited about this goal setting series we are embarking on together!

As we discussed last week, sometimes the “G” word can be a struggle for a myriad of reasons and one of those is how our brain can react to those goals in an effort to keep us safe. At least, the brain’s version of safe.

But what if we could train our brain to LOVE our goals? How effective would you be at achieving your goals if instead of fearing them, your brain was seeking them out?

Look, I have been there. I have set the big scary goals, I’ve set the S.M.A.R.T. goals- if it involves goals, I have probably tried it.

Then I figured it out. I realized how to re-train our brains to LOVE our goals.

When I started to validate and nurture my brains thoughts about my goals, they became much easier to stick with.

Does that mean they will just magically happen with no effort? Of course not.

Does that mean you can make your brain your best ally in your goal setting process? I believe so. I believe in you and I believe completely in this process.

Come listen as I am so excited to share this week’s podcast with you.

Today we explore:

· Recognizing the differences in our types of goals and how to positively associate them individually in your brain

· Learning the 3 attributes we can use to “hack” our thoughts about goals

· Discover ways to create a system of validation for your brains goal integration process

I hope you had a wonderful New Years Day my friends! I also hope you took the time to follow last week’s advice and took a moment to love yourself as you are right now.

Now that we are in a positive place of love and acceptance of ourselves, we are setting goals and having thoughts about what we would like to accomplish in our 2023.

Now you might think that our brain is naturally inclined to help us make and keep goals. After all, we aren’t setting goals to make our lives worse so OF COURSE our brain is going to go right along with our plans.

Except it doesn’t always work like that does it?

When I was starting my business, I set some goals for what I wanted it to do for me and my family. And almost IMMEDIATELY my brain started to magnify the internal and external doubts and throw up obstacles to going after my goals.

That doesn’t seem right. Our brain wants us to become better people, right?

If you feel like you have ever encountered your brain or your thoughts trying to sabotage your annual journey of self-betterment, then this episode is for you.

Today we explore:

· Understanding how and why our brain reacts to new goals and new growth in our lives.

· Recognizing which hurdles the brain magnifies and what to do about them.

· The lessons I learned while overcoming my own obstacles and beliefs as I started and grew my business

“I got 104 on my science final!” my daughter texted to me with glee. I love that my daughter celebrates all the things.

Our brains spend so much time keeping us safe and anticipating survival processes. Those are vital and important.

Equally important in both our personal lives but also in our business and career life is to celebrate the good moments.

I recently started looking at my 2023 goals and in the process of doing so, I reflected back on all the amazing accomplishments and growth of 2022.

It’s a key process in our brain to celebrate and recognize the positivity of what we accomplish.

This week we explore:

· What are the little things I celebrate in my life?

· What does positive thinking / celebration do for our brain?

· How to make celebration a regular exercise.

Firstly, I want to wish a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Joyous Kwanzaa, Happy Yuletide, and Season's greetings to all!

We talked last week about the concept of Scarcity. I want to pivot to think about the opposite of that word.

I am talking about Abundance. The “Growth” mindset as some call it. The thought that there IS enough for all of us.

I can 100% own that this mindset can feel more elusive than the far easier but potentially destructive scarcity mindset.

The abundance mindset is more than just believing there is enough but its also viewing the world through that positive, inclusive, lens of learning and growth.

When something goes right, when my business is doing well and when I am healthy, my abundant mind approaches those positive developments in life with gratitude and enjoyment.

When things are less than stellar, when a major repair comes out of nowhere or an injury pops up, my abundant mind looks as these not as moments of failure or lack but as opportunities to grow and do better.

If you too sometimes succumb to the feelings of scarcity but wish to live in the light of the abundant mindset then come with me friends because this week’s episode is for you.

Scarcity. This word can have many meanings and cause many emotions for good or for ill in our brains and in our day-to-day behaviors.

Sometimes our brain “creates” scarcity in our lives and drives us to seek gratification from the wrong sources of pleasure. And sometimes that scarcity is very real and represents a true un-met need.

This can show up in our personal lives with unhealthy addictions and toxic relationships. But did you know this can also create behaviors detrimental to your business and career life even if we seek purely “legal and healthy” solutions.

Maybe it’s spending money on an investment you shouldn’t. Maybe it’s shiny object syndrome where you fall prey to the “gurus” who tell you they have it all figured out and this one “simple” plan can make you successful.

Friends if any of this sounds familiar, I just want to say- I have been there. Truly I have been where you are and I have sought the shortcuts in my business because I felt a lack.

Understanding this was a feeling of artificial scarcity I had created in my head has allowed me to figure out the root cause of that “need” and put my business on the right place.

This week we dissect the complex emotion that is scarcity.

Come with me to examine the following:

· Help understanding artificial scarcity from true lack in our lives

· The signs of scarcity in our lives and unhealthy coping behaviors

· How we can take control of these feelings in our business

Are you the type of person who dreads when family members or friends ask “What do you want for Christmas?”

Do you get to November 1st and think, “Someone is going to ask me for my Christmas list soon” with a sense of tiredness and anxiety?

A listener reached out to me with the question, “I don’t want anything for Christmas- Is something wrong with me?”

Gift giving during holidays and birthdays is a social norm in many customs and cultures. For many, gift giving is a love language and they view it as a way to truly show they care about others.

Sometimes though, the types of wants we have may conflict with the way people want to show their affection for you. Maybe you like experiences and they like watching you unwrap lots of little trinkets?

I hear you. I understand you.

This week, we are going to talk through the various feelings, emotions and thoughts that can come up for you in your personal life when it comes to the custom of gift giving.

We discuss:

· Why not wanting things doesn’t mean something is wrong with you

· How honoring these feelings is honoring yourself

· What these feelings about gift giving does or does not mean about your feelings towards Family and Friends

· How voicing your true feelings in a respectful way can bring you and others to greater understanding when it comes to your gift giving preferences
