Today’s topic aligns perfectly with the season theme of 'Redefine' as we explore today how focus reshapes our running experience. Did you know our attention span averages 8 seconds? Yes, that's a second shorter than a goldfish! So much for Ted Lasso's 'be a goldfish, Sam' pep talk after a blunder, right?
We're all in the same boat, pulled by the allure of 'pretty things.' Our focus is a precious commodity, and we hold the reins on where it goes. If, like me, you're eager to find a solution to that persistent craving for another dopamine hit, stick around.
What we really want is a quiet brain. A calm brain. Maybe physical exhaustion after a hard or long run is currently your ticket to finally feeling the calm settle in. So often we run to feel better physically and mentally but more often than not we return feeling disillusioned when the results of what we typically track (such as pace and distance) seem ‘blah’. We then feel frustrated and to top it off the mind still feels wired from the 2-3,000 thoughts we experienced during the hour we were running. Retrospectively, we noticed we had a difficult time connecting with the run.
We need a solution to our TikTok brains.

Another episode for your runner’s ‘tool belt’ to help you reduce your risk of injury and increase your joy of running physically and mentally. Today is all about the core and why understanding proper core engagement is so important. Before learning this I used to have achy hips ( not while running necessarily) but throughout the day especially in the morning. As a matter of fact at 40 I thought I needed hip replacements and I hadn’t even started running yet. My chiropractor and PT both said it was hip bursitis and we looked for stretches to help alleviate the pain but it never went away. That is until I learned how to level my pelvis and engage my core because it reduced the extraneous motion I was making when walking and running.

There’s a tendency in our society to value ‘no pain, no gain’ that we neglect to create a mind-body connection. Establishing a connection between our mind and body is the most rewarding thing we can do as an athlete (yes you and me) because as we listen to our body we can teach it new habits.

Welcome to episode 121 of MRM - the podcast that helps you run with more joy. In today's episode, I share a guest talk I did in a coaching colleague’s running community. The theme was 'Making Friends With Running,' a topic close to my heart. I discuss my intentional approach to running, treating it as an experiment, and the concept of 'giving more than you take from running.' Shifting your mindset from 'getting something' from running to 'giving to it' can lead to a more fulfilling running experience. If you want to enhance your relationship with running, email me for personalized recommendations.
Thanks for joining me today, and remember, it's not just about what you gain from running, but also what you give to it.

In this episode, we're diving deep into the fusion of running and mental health therapy with a special guest, Sarah Strong. A mental health therapist and accomplished ultra runner, Sarah brings a unique perspective to the conversation. She aligns closely with my belief in self-compassion and embracing the joy of running.
Sarah underscores the potent role running plays in bolstering mental wellness. The act of running triggers the release of endorphins, amplifies serotonin and dopamine levels, and even contributes to our physical health. Moreover, running serves as a canvas for processing complex emotions, aligning our mind and body, cultivating self-awareness, and honing stress management skills. Just as therapy challenges us to overcome mental barriers, running empowers us to believe in ourselves and realize our potential.
However, it's crucial to discern that while running offers immense benefits for mental well-being, it's not a substitute for therapy. Sarah emphasizes this point, highlighting that therapy equips us with invaluable tools and guides us in reshaping our thought patterns. While running has numerous advantages, it can also amplify mental health challenges if approached inattentively. The release of stress hormones during running can be beneficial with proper rest, but adding stress to an already demanding situation can have counterproductive effects on mental health.
Recognizing signs of burnout, stress, or emotional distress is pivotal. If you find yourself associating relaxation solely with exercise or experiencing negative emotions when skipping a workout, these signals might suggest the need for guidance from a mental health therapist.
During our conversation, Sarah unveils the micro tools she shares with her clients to empower them to excel in races. Tune in to uncover these strategies that blend mental and physical wellness, setting the stage for success on your running journey.

Right now you might use running as a punishment for food you’ve eaten. I was taught that exercise is necessary to burn off calories so I could eat more or shrink my body. Were you taught this too? The diet industry wants us to believe this. With this outlook, running becomes the vehicle for something ‘negative’ ie. burning calories. It's very hard to create joy from running when our reason for doing it is negative in the first place. What if you could run and do exercise simply because you like it. Because it makes you feel good?

Today I’m talking about my journey into heart rate training and the two main reasons for pursuing it: improved performance and better health. Switching to zone 2 running is appealing thanks to tag lines like “go slow to become faster’. For many runners having to run slow, often much slower can be a cause of anxiety for runners. Listen in as I share how to manage these thoughts so you don’t have to hate zone 2 running or give up on it.

Today I want to talk about the concept of ‘the process being the goal’ as opposed to only achieving the goal.
One of the reasons I used to hate running was because I was focused on being done with the run - I would go for a run and be so focused on being back home that I hated what I was doing. I was only outcome oriented and I didn’t like the process.

Running often becomes meaningless when your intention is only to conquer the miles, the mountain, the track with your body simply to achieve fast times and long distances.
Selecting the right metrics for what to use for your runs can connect your body-mind-spirit - choosing the wrong ones can separate you from feeling this connection.
About a year and a half ago, I was asked to author a blog post for a women’s fitness community. A blog post on mindfulness and the role it plays in women’s health and fitness. I want to share the blog with you today because the content is still relevant and some of you out there might be able to relate to this. This was my journey into including mindfulness in my life.

“When people go for a run with their mouth open, they dry out their mouth and traumatize the upper airway.” (Patrick McKeown). Do you ‘over-breathe’? I used to over-breathe and not know it. It had a hugely negative impact on my physical and especially mental well-being. The fix was simple - listen as I share a recommendation.
Have you ever used nasal dilators while running? I’ve trialed some - listen to my take on them.

Today I’m sharing an invitation to participate in a New Year’s Wellness Retreat I sent out to runners in my running community ‘Women Running Their Best Life’ recently. I wanted to do something a little different today and share this email with you and extend this invitation to you as well.
“Rest and self-care are so important. When you take time to replenish your spirit, it allows you to serve from the overflow. You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” (Eleanor Brown).
“Self care is giving the world the best of you, instead of what’s left of you.” (Katie Reed)

I decided to took this week off from running. The last few weeks, I’ve noticed aching in my shins after my runs - probably beginning shin splints.
Pausing exercise in the past used to be associated with fear and worry over not burning calories - can you relate?
On this episode, I share why I feel 100% ok with my decision and how I got to this space.

How do you want your runs to feel?
I wanted to improve so much - and I used to focus on what wasn’t working so I could make myself do better - but everything stayed the same until I added self-care and these 3 daily practices.
For my client Vanessa things had gotten so normalized and she didn’t even realize how much negative self-talk was happening until she joined My Runner’s Mind : ‘I had a habit of very negative self-talk, in running and beyond, and sometimes I didn't even realize I was doing it because of how normalized it was.
The shift, especially in my mindset, has been massive..Now this also allows me to show up with more confidence, presence, and compassion in my relationships and all other areas of my life
