I had the pleasure of chatting with Luna of Undistracted Parenting, an expert in the digital wellbeing space for parents!

We had a fantastic conversation all about parenting in the digital age, discussing:

  • Luna's background and how she found herself being passionate about this topic
  • Why parenting is more challenging in the digital age, with examples of the challenges parents are facing with their kids online lives today
  • And crucially, how they can overcome these challenges
  • Luna shares her advice for first-time parents and those already parenting pre-teens and teens when it comes to digital devices

And yes, I do randomly talk about Love Island in this episode!

I hope you enjoy the chat, and do share the episode on social media if you feel it'll be of value to others!

ABOUT LUNA

Luna is the co-founder and co-host of the Middle East’s leading Arabic parenting podcast, Mishbilshibshib. Through the podcast, Luna and her cohost discuss the latest research on the psychology of parenting with the aim of raising awareness on positive, conscious, and peaceful parenting. With most parenting information available globally being in English, she strives to shed light on this knowledge in Arabic and through the lens of an Arab sociocultural perspective.

Luna obtained her Master of Science in Psychology, with a focus on Cyberpsychology in 2022. Her thesis, titled Digitally parenting preteens in the UAE: A cross-cultural qualitative study, explored the gaps in research surrounding digital parenting in the Middle East, uncovered new findings, and proposed future research recommendations. The findings of her study can inform policymakers, psychologists, educators, and coaches in creating the much-needed support systems for digital parents.

Luna is also a certified digital wellbeing coach (ICF-approved Consciously Digital program), and a Transformational Parenting Coach (Jai Institute). With training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Luna works with parents and adolescents to help them find balance in their tech-saturated lives by seeking digital wellbeing. She strives to provide parents with supportive strategies to help them digitally parent their children in the modern era. Her passion for the topic stems from her learnings with her own two adolescent children.

Luna will be launching a new initiative named Undistracted Parenting in October 2023, where she will focus on the challenges parents face, and will provide a platform to present research on the topic to parents, policymakers, and changemakers to raise a new generation of mindful digital citizens.

I'm joined by doctoral researcher Lorrie Hayman today to discuss one of the most alarming, and important, issues in today's online culture - cyber violence.

We're discussing what is it and how can we combat it, and it includes some personal stories so this episode does come with a trigger warning that we discuss sexual violence and violence against women.

We discuss:

  • Lorrie's background and how she found herself interested in this subject
  • What is cyber violence?
  • How prevalent is cyber violence in our society today and what are some of the factors that contribute to that?
  • Lorrie shares some examples of cyber violence and how it impacts people's lives. And I share a very personal story of my own.
  • Why, because cyber violence is online, it often doesn’t get the same treatment as other forms of violence
  • What are some of the emerging trends in cyber violence
  • What individuals and communities can do to prevent cyber violence and support victims
  • How technology companies play a role in preventing this
  • Some of the psychological and emotional effects of cyber violence, and how can victims of cyber violence access support and resources
  • How we can educate young people about the dangers of cyber violence and teach them to be responsible digital citizens
  • Lorrie shares her advice about the importance of addressing cyber violence and creating a safer, more inclusive digital world

This is such an important topic, so I do hope you give it a listen.

ABOUT LORRIE

Lorrie Hayman is a doctoral researcher in Global Women’s Studies at the University of Galway, Ireland. Her interdisciplinary feminist doctoral research explores the lived experiences of women in Ireland concerning Cyber Sexual Violence.

Today's episode dives into my reasons for this, and looks back at the amazing journey I've had the pleasure of being on for over 8 years.

It outlines what is next for me, and what this means for you.

While there are a lot of changes happening, there is a lot of things that are still going to be the same.

This is still going to be a place where we discuss internet culture, the positives and the negatives. I will always talk to people and express both sides of the coin in my content, because I wholeheartedly believe that the only realistic way forward is to learn to use and live with technology in a healthy and balanced way.

I’ll talk about some of the negatives in order to raise awareness, and I’ll talk about some of the positives in order to inspire hope for real change.

So if you want to learn how to navigate the digital landscape, improve your overall wellbeing or those you love, work with, or teach, and equip yourself and others with the tools necessary to thrive in a tech-centered future, do stick around.

Moving forward I’ll be working with companies and leaders, schools and educators and parents and carers, all of whom want to incorporate more digital wellbeing into their organisation and team, curriculum, students, children or young adults, or their own life.

Again, a huge thank you to everyone who has supported me during my many years working in social media. I do hope you’ll stick around and follow me on this journey further into digital wellbeing.

Changes will slowly be happening over the next few weeks, but do reach out by email or DM if you want to know more or are interested in anything I’ve spoken about here.

I’m so excited for this next phase of going all in with such an important subject!

One juicy podcast interview just wasn't enough, so I am back with health and wellness blogger Thalia of Notes by Thalia! I’m so excited to have her back as we dive deeper to discuss whether or not social media is distorting our perception of healthy living!

We cover:

  • Toxic trends on social media, such as the "what I eat in a day" trend.
  • Why these trends are toxic and dangerous.
  • Why we as a culture are seeing social media as a genuine health source, or at the very least, a well-being guide that we can trust.
  • Thalia does some myth-busting around what health and wellbeing really is.
  • I ask her whether or not she thinks influencers, coaches, online brands etc do enough to clarify that this is not medical advice, and how they could do more/be held accountable?
  • And finally, Thalia shares how people can better equip themselves to differentiate between real sound health advice and simple trends on social media.

I hope you enjoy hearing Thalia and having her back on the podcast, I definitely did!

When it comes to screentime in our households, it can be a constant battle between kids and young people, and the parents. But what if we reframed this and instead of a battleground, it's a place of discovery, of understanding, of connecting?

Today I am joined by the brilliant Arcadia Kim of Infinite Screentime to discuss her movement of making screentime, family time.

We discuss:

  • Arcadia's career journey in the gaming industry to creating Infinite Screentime
  • Why so many parents feel such guilt in giving their kids a device, and why Arcadia wants to change this
  • She talks us through what a more open relationship with screens in our family life could look like
  • She explains how parents and carers can not only understand their child's screentime, but engage with it
  • The consequences of keeping our kids' screen time activities hidden and almost taboo
  • How can we empower the young people in our families to be aware and mindful of their own screentime
  • And finally, Arcadia shares some action steps here that parents or carers to begin making screentime family time

I really hope you enjoy this episode and found it as refreshing as I did!

Today's episode is all about content. We live in a time where content dominates and attention is currency, but all this content comes at a cost. So in this episode, I'm exploring the question how much content is too much content? And do we, as creators, have an ethical responsibility to have our audiences wellbeing at the top of our mind when we create and hit that publish button?

I'd really love to hear your thoughts on this episode, so do let me know!

Today's podcast is a very raw and honest one. I'm sitting down with my husband Pete to have a very open conversation about what it's really like to be the partner of a business owner, and he doesn't hold back.

We chat about the emotional rollercoaster of seeing the one you love go through the highs and lows, and of working alone at home.

We get very personal and talk about money. This year for me in business has been one of ups and downs financially, and we talk honestly about what that does to a relationship, whether or not Pete has ever felt he needed to bring up the subject of a steady 9-5, and about how he really feels about the investments I make in my business.

But it's not all deep chats! Pete also gives his opinion on the world of social media and the online business world from the perspective of someone who is not in it, and he has some interesting analogies! And we also give plenty of funny stories about our experiences on social media, including the time Pete found me on Facebook after ust a few weeks of chatting and not knowing my surname!

If you want to skip to the deep stuff though, start at 11.43.

I hope you enjoy this really raw and honest conversation.

Today I'm joined by psychologist-turned-productivity-mentor Jenna Hellberg to talk all things hustle culture.

We chat about what hustle culture is and what it encompasses today, and why it's so prevalent in the online business space.

We dive into a personal story of Jenna's when she ran a photography business - about how online social pressure led to her taking on way too many marketing tasks, and how that impacted her business.

Jenna talks about how she learned to focus only on the most impactful tasks, avoiding the shiny object syndrome of social media, and the pressure to jump on every new platform and trend.

And finally, Jenna shares her advice for anyone who feels they can relate and are feeling the pressure to do certain things because that's what everyone else is doing.

I hope you enjoy this wonderfully valuable conversation!

ABOUT JENNA

Today's episode came about after I read an interesting post on social media by Abi Rowley, where she shared how, and why, she was disconnecting from Instagram for the month of August.

Abi is an Online Business Manager who works with Coaches & Mentors so they can increase their impact and income, and take back control of their lives.

After almost a decade of working in the corporate world, she decided enough was enough. She no longer wanted her life to be in the hands of someone else, deciding what she could work on, where she had to work from and how much money she could earn. She wanted freedom and fulfillment, and to live life on her own terms.

Now she uses her results-focused approach, analytical thinking, and collaborative nature to help others do the same.

In today's episode, we discuss:

  • Abi's story and how she became an OBM.
  • How Instagram has been making her feel, and why she decided to take a step away from it.
  • Authenticity and feeling bored with her content.
  • How Instagram became a drain on her energy, with the bad clouding the good.
  • And how working online has made her feel out of touch with reality.

We also dive into what Abi planned on doing instead for the month of August, the fear of taking a temporary step back from social media platforms, and what Abi would change about Instagram if she could.

We end the conversation with Abi sharing any advice for people who may feel they can relate and are feeling the pressure and the disconnect when it comes to Instagram.

This was such an honest conversation, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!

Digital marketing is an industry that moves fast, but for some reason, the OG that is email marketing seems to resist change. And in many respects, that's the appeal of email. But is it time to rethink some of the methods we use here?

Today, I'm talking lead magnets. Is it outdated? Is it unethical? Is it a waste of our time?

I'd love to hear your thoughts, so send me a DM once you've listened to the episode!

In today's episode, we're talking all about the future of business and the future of marketing, and why purpose is at the heart of that. I'm joined by Ida Svenonius who runs the change marketing agency Becoming, helping purpose-driven startups scale their business and become change leaders in their industry. From strategy to execution, she supports startups with brand, traction and culture to take their impact to the next level.

Ida started as a filmmaker, studied social anthropology at the University of Cambridge, worked in the tech startup scene in London and Berlin, and developed a deep passion for digital marketing and startups.

At the core, she is deeply curious about what drives human behaviour - and what that means for the business world.

We dive into how she found her purpose, what a business driven by purpose actually looks like, and why it's a necessity for businesses in today's world to have their purpose front and centre of everything they do in order to succeed.

Ida also shares what she would say to skeptics when talking about profit and purpose going hand in hand, as well as what it would look like if everyone approached business in this way.

We end the conversation with Ida sharing her advice to help business owners build a business driven by purpose.

Today I am joined by the lovely Carolynne Colbeck, a Kripalu Yoga, Yin Yoga, and Yoga for All teacher. We had a wonderful conversation all about what the pandemic taught her about accessibility and the benefits of the internet.

We discussed what initially drew Carolynne to yoga, and what her work looked like before the pandemic hit. We talked about the pivot, like many of us had to do, into an exclusively online business at the height of COVID-19.

We dive deep into what accessibility really means, what the pandemic and the multiple lockdowns taught her about accessibility, and why the internet gave hope to so many during that time.

We end the conversation with Carolynne sharing some great tips to help you make the most of all the positive aspects the internet can give us, as well as how to have a more accessible business in today’s world.

I hope you enjoy the episode!

About Carolynne

Carolynne is passionate about offering you cozy + accessible practices that allow you to create a collaborative relationship with your whole self.

As a highly-sensitive, creative, earth-loving soul herself, she gets really excited about pulling inspiration from the cycles and rhythms found in the seasons and the moon to put together yoga + self-care practices that help students feel more connected to their whole selves (including all the messiness and imperfections), while aiming to live a life filled with less doing, and more being.

Her passion in accessible yoga lies within the idea that yoga is so much more than being able to touch your toes - your practice is a space where you are welcome to be exactly as you are, no matter who you are.

Yoga has helped Carolynne find and gain the tools that help her navigate all the different facets of being a human in this busy world. That is what she aims to offer you when you enter into her classes.

In today's episode, I am joined by personal development coach Victoria Brennan to talk all about aligning your goals with your actions.

We dived deep into goals: asking why they're important, or are they important at all? Even if we live in a culture that is obsessed with measuring our success!

We dived deep into action, why Victoria often sees goals and action being out of alignment, and what effect them not being in alignment has on us as individuals and business owners.

We also discussed how social media and the online space have contributed to how we think and feel about the goals and actions we take in our lives, and how we are often moved to choose goals that either aren't what we really want, or aren't something we can achieve just yet.

We ended the conversation with Victoria sharing some great tips to help you align your goals with your actions, as well as tips to drown out the noise of social media to focus only on what's in your control, what is possible for you, and your circumstances.

As a personal development coach, Victoria is passionate about helping people do the inner work and to first KNOW themselves. Victoria goes deep, and using a blend of coaching and teaching she helps people retrain their brains, see new perspectives and create life-changing results.

Victoria has been running her coaching business for almost 4 years following a successful career in charity & people development. She now works in three key areas with her clients:

  • Identity – Everything they are being.

  • Presence- Everything they are doing

  • Expansion - Everything they can create.

Today's episode is a juicy one! I'm chatting to wellness blogger Thalia Tourikis all about Instagram and The Wellness Industry, and we're asking the question 'is it toxic'?

Thalia is the founder of Notes by Thalia, a personal wellness blog that promotes a healthy work-life balance; one where productivity and self-care can work side by side and you don’t need to sacrifice one over the other. Through her weekly blog posts, Thalia encourages her readers to mindfully navigate and balance their day through sustainable productivity tips and holistic self-care practices, so they can find a moment of calm in a busy world.

In this podcast episode, we dive into Thalia's story of becoming passionate about self-care, but also what that meant for her when she didn't fit the ideal wellness aesthetic she was seeing on social media.

We talk about the wellness industry as a whole; how much it's worth, how fast it's grown, and how it has evolved over the years. But also, how Instagram has influenced, and capitalised, on that evolution.

We talk about the #thatgirl trend on TikTok and Instagram, and dive deeper into the toxic culture online when it comes to wellbeing.

Thalia opens up about what she feels wellness really means, and shares her tips to help you practice self-care in a way that works for you, and not just what you see on Instagram as "the right way".

And finally, we finish on what Thalia thinks the future holds for the wellness industry and the culture of wellbeing and self-care on Instagram.

I absolutely loved this conversation with Thalia, I hope you will too!

A lot of what is talked about in the world of marketing and online business is scaling...or building...or growing. And that’s often attached to adding more. But actually, there comes a time in every business owner’s journey where that next phase of growth comes from letting go of some things. It comes from focusing your energy on less things in order to do them better. I see this a lot when it comes to social media marketing, specifically with people wanting to let go of a platform.

And honestly, I’m a big advocate for just not being somewhere you don’t want to be. But our businesses are something we have built and nurtured, so of course, it comes with some trepidation when we make a big change. So people always want to know, should I let go of this? And then the really tricky part, when is the right time to let go of this?!

So in today's episode, I walk you through some of the things I do with clients when they are looking to scale back and let go of a platform. Together we usually look at ‘should you?’ and if that’s a yes, we look at ‘when should you?’. Because timing is what can make the biggest difference here.

I hope you find this episode valuable, and if so, do let me know!

If you could set up your own social media platform, what would it look like? Would it have likes and followers? Or would you do away with that in search of something that better protects our mental wellbeing, while also allowing us to thrive in a creative, purpose-driven space?

Well, that's exactly what my guests today have done!

I sat down with Nick & Karl, the co-founders of Curv, a new social media platform that is working to harness the positive aspects of social media, and actively work to minimise or eliminate the negative aspects.

Curv's mission is to build movements, support changemakers, and drive action, at scale. They are working to build a "global community that can fundamentally and systemically change the direction of corporations, governments and cultures to achieve the social, cultural and environmental prosperity our world needs; and all on a safer, healthier platform that eloquently combines purpose with profits".

Sounds pretty exciting right?

In this episode, I get to ask Nick & Karl all about Curv and how it works, but I also dive into some of the tougher aspects of sticking to their values as they seek to grow.

I hope you find this episode interesting and inspiring! It is a culmination of the 5-part series I've had the pleasure of recording with Nick Smallman, where we explored the perils of social media and our addiction to our phones. This final episode is to show you what a brighter future for social media can look like!

Today's episode is all about Sophy and her personal journey when it comes to her relationship with social media. In her business, she's experimented with removing herself completely from social media, to using it with intention after being inspired by the philosophy of digital minimalism.

We chat about how and why Sophy found herself looking for a way to be more intentional with her time online. We discuss her decision and the consequences for her business of coming off social media completely, and what she learnt from that time off. And we chat about why she decided to come back to social media, but in a way that far worked better for herself and her business.

Sophy Dale is a Brand Messaging Strategist & Story Coach who helps people put their secret sauce into words, so that perfect-fit clients will immediately ‘get’ what they do, love their take on it and will line up to work with them. I'm back with Nick Smallman for the 4th installment of our 5-part series, exploring our relationship with, and dependency on, our phones and social media.

In today's episode, Nick and I are talking about social media and mental health, but perhaps not on the topics most of us are used to hearing on this subject.

We chat about online bullying and harassment; 'the victims and victimizers'.

We talk about information overload, and the need to have an opinion and use your voice.

We dive into body image in the metaverse, parasocial relationships, and the impact of visibility.

It was a fascinating conversation and I hope you enjoy it!

Nick Smallman is the founder and CEO of Working Voices. He has been at the top of his profession for two decades and in recent years has turned his attention to the perilous relationship between humans and technology.

Over the last 20 years, Nick has developed more than 50 courses, workshops, and seminars in all areas of human communication. He has lectured at the London Business School and Columbia Business School and counts some of the world’s most successful companies as his clients such as JP Morgan, Sony Music, Goldman Sachs, and BlackRock. No, this episode is not about climate change. It's about information online - misinformation, disinformation, and malinformation. But the reason we argue it's humanity's greatest challenge is that we cannot solve some of the greatest challenges of our time, like climate change, without the correct information. We cannot solve these challenges while misinformation is spread, while there is no way of knowing whether what we're reading is fact or not, and while propaganda prevails.

The result of what we are consuming is, we believe, one of today's greatest challenges.

Whether that is unintentional mistakes such as inaccurate statistics, translations, or when satire is taken seriously, to fabricated or deliberately manipulated content, intentionally created conspiracy theories or rumors, or a deliberate change of context, date, or time of genuine content, this topic is the problem we as a society need to solve if we are to progress.

This is the third installment of my 5-part series with Nick exploring our relationship with our phones and social media in an attempt to solve this extraordinarily human problem.

Nick Smallman is the founder and CEO of Working Voices. He has been at the top of his profession for two decades and in recent years has turned his attention to the perilous relationship between humans and technology.

Social media is both powerful and debilitating. It can be a connector and a separator. It can be an opportunity or adversity. And so with that there often comes a time in a business owner's journey when we question whether or not we need to be there at all.

What I hope this episode gives you is an insight from the perspective of someone who works in social media, who helps business owners market their business in a sustainable way, about whether or not you should be on social media in 2022.

With years of experience helping personal brands and service-based business owners market their businesses successfully online, I wanted to use that experience to be totally honest about what it takes to make it work, to help you navigate some of those frustrations around social media, and show you some of the realistic and practical options available to you if you don't want to be on social media.

This episode isn't about a right or wrong way. It's about helping you fully understand all the options available to you so that you can make an informed choice based on what's best for you and your business.

This week I'm chatting to Vadrine Boullé (aka Vadz), a marketing strategist and business coach for service providers. We chat all about her story....an island girl born and raised in the Seychelles who, after graduating from law school in London, completely disagreed with the system and decided to chart her own path to 6 figures in the virtual space!

We talk about how her blogging side hustle while studying law turned into a profitable passion; what her family felt about her decision to leave law behind and become an online business owner; and whether or not she ever has any regrets.

Today, Vadrine helps service providers, consultants and freelancers start and grow sustainable and profitable businesses using high-performing systems, innovative strategies, and simple sales so they can achieve their version of success.

Her mission is to continue to impact a generation of empowered, fulfilled, and inspired business owners who not only dare to chase their dreams, but have access to the knowledge and support to do so.

I really hope you enjoy this episode!

He works with politicians on both sides of the Atlantic, as well as with charities and non-profit organisations, and enjoys mentoring young entrepreneurs.

This is the second installment of our 5-part series exploring our relationship with our phones and social media in an attempt to solve this extraordinarily human problem.

This episode focuses on our addiction to our phones, and Nick and I walk you through his smartphone addiction test, which is adapted from a smartphone addiction test developed by Dr David Greenfield – founder of the Centre for Internet and Technology Addiction.

I hope you enjoy the second installment of this 5-part series. Join us over the coming months as we explore our relationship with the technology in our lives, culminating in how there is a brighter future for the online space on the horizon.

Before we dive into today’s episode, do make sure you give the episode "What Is Digital Minimalism?" a listen if you haven’t already, as it'll help so much before you begin this one!

Today I want to follow on from that episode to ask the question: digital minimalism and running a business, can you really have both? There are a lot of promises in the world of social media marketing, so I want to bust some myths today and explore the practicalities and realities behind incorporating digital minimalism into your business.

Towards the end of the show I’ll also be diving into how I used digital minimalism in my marketing strategy to allow me to work a much-reduced schedule over the summer, so be sure to stick around for that part too.

I hope you find this episode valuable!

We dive into how you stay connected to yourself, others, and nature in this digital age, with Ceri sharing her wisdom on why she feels this is important to do, especially when a lot of our connection occurs online these days.

Can you really take a summer off as a small business owner?

In today's bonus mini-episode, I review my experience experimenting with a seasonal business model. I chat about how my desire to slow down, disconnect from technology, and be outdoors more with my husband over the summer, led me to further my quest for a more life-first approach to business.

I'll dive into exactly how I planned for this, changed my services to accommodate it, and whether or not it actually worked!
