Grandma's chicken soup might do more for your electrolytes than that powder packet. A lot of us are drinking a "fix" our bodies never actually needed just because everyone else seemed to be doing it too.

In this episode, I break down the electrolyte drink and powder craze that's taken over grocery store shelves and Instagram feeds. I cover what electrolytes actually do in the body, who genuinely benefits from products like LMNT, Liquid IV, Nuun, and Pique, and why most people reaching for these drinks don't actually need them. I walk through the science of hydration, the specific medical and athletic scenarios where electrolyte supplementation makes sense, and how to evaluate whether a product fits your actual needs instead of just its marketing.

If you've ever wondered whether you should be adding electrolyte packets to your water bottle "just in case," or felt confused about which brand is right for your lifestyle, this episode will help you cut through the noise.

JUMP TO:
00:00 – Why everyone's chugging electrolytes
02:40 – The science: what electrolytes actually do in your body
6:58 – Who actually needs these drinks (and who's just along for the marketing ride)
12:24 – The sneaky sugar, sodium, and vitamin overload hiding in your bottle
14:44 – When electrolytes go from marketing gimmick to genuine lifeline
28:10 – Signs your body might actually be asking for more electrolytes
28:53 – My brand-by-brand breakdown: LMNT, Liquid IV, Nuun, Gatorade, Peak, and Ultima
31:01 – The bottom line on side effects, water, and choosing what's right for you

You keep going back to the food. Not because it's convenient, but because it works.

It quiets and soothes... until the guilt kicks in.

But what if the thing you're actually craving isn't food at all?

In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Ben Rein, award-winning neuroscientist, Stanford lecturer, and author of Why Brains Need Friends.

We talk about:

  • Why social connection is a hardwired need just like food and sleep,
  • Why our brains have gotten so bad at predicting how good interaction will feel
  • Why isolation is wrecking your body and mind.
  • The neuroscience of dopamine
  • Why texting will never satisfy you the way in-person connection does
  • Why the thing you're chasing when you reach for food might actually be social connection in disguise.

If you've ever wondered why comfort food feels like the only thing that works OR why socializing sounds exhausting even though you know it'll help, this episode will help you understand what your brain is actually asking for.

JUMP TO:

00:00 Meet Dr. Ben Rein and why social connection is a basic human need
02:47 The case for why we crave human interaction
05:59 How COVID rewired our predictions about socializing
09:43 The study showing we're wrong about rejection
12:44 What isolation does to your cortisol, inflammation, and mortality risk
15:56 Building a "social diet" (yes, just like a food diet)
18:26 Why dopamine is a learning chemical, not a feel-good one
21:13 Oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine: the connection trifecta
26:03 The staircase of interaction: text vs. call vs. video vs. in person
29:22 Why it's easier to be cruel online (the virtual disengagement hypothesis)
34:33 How screen time may be shaping an entire generation
40:22 Why married couples survive cancer better than some chemo patients
44:03 Conflict, connection, and why avoiding hard conversations costs you

You did the thing that was supposed to fix it.

The surgery, the weight watchers, the fresh starts.

And for a while, it worked... Until it didn't.

The food noise came back. The urges crept in. The sense of being out of control around food returned… and with it, confusion and shame.

In this episode, I sit down with Kim, a client who underwent weight loss surgery and later found herself struggling with binge eating again. We talk honestly about why this can happen, what surgery changes (and what it doesn’t), and why binge eating is never just about the size of your stomach.

If you’ve ever wondered, “Why didn’t this fix it?” OR "Is that my last resort?", this episode will help you understand what’s really going on and what’s actually required to create lasting peace with food without going under the knife.

03:12 Successful on the outside, secretly struggling with binge eating
07:20 The decision to have bariatric surgery

You’re successful in every area of life… except food.

You’ve tried the diets. The plans. The rules. The white-knuckling. And now you’re tired.

Part of you wants to stop binge eating. Part of you is terrified of failing again.

In this episode of Nourished & Free, I explains why what you’ve been calling “failure” is actually the most teachable moment in the entire process, and how to make failure your secret weapon.

I'm breaking down:

  • Why mistakes are necessary for learning
  • How binge episodes provide powerful insight
  • Why perfection isn’t the goal (and never was)
  • How having support during setbacks changes everything
  • What actually makes clients successful long-term

Good news, fam: You are not broken. Your brain is adaptable. Your patterns are retrainable.
And, your setbacks can become stepping stones... if you let them.

If you’re ready to stop spiraling and start recalibrating, this episode is for you.

TOPICS COVERED 👇🏼

00:00 “What if I’m just broken?” (the spiral you don’t say out loud)
02:36 The “I knew this would Happen” spiral
09:26 Why one slip turns into “I’ll start over Monday”

If you’ve lost weight before, but it came back... this episode is for you.

Let's break down why weight loss often becomes the common denominator behind dieting burnout, binge–restrict cycles, and feeling out of control around food. Not because weight loss is bad, but because making it the main focus quietly changes how your brain and body respond to food.

I'll talk through how obsessing over the outcome (the scale) clouds judgment, increases pressure, and actually makes consistency harder. You’ll learn why the scale is delayed, ambiguous feedback, and why using it as a daily pass/fail test often backfires and has the opposite effect you're wanting.

This episode walks you through what changes when weight loss stops being the driver, how food decisions get quieter, and why rebuilding trust and safety with food leads to more ease, self-control, and long-term change (with or without weight loss).

If you hate that you say, "It worked, I got the weight off... but then it came back", then this episode offers a mindset shift that could change everything.

  • 01:39 How the scale quietly starts running your life
  • 04:01 The pressure that makes food feel loud and exhausting
  • 06:24 The credit score analogy that explains why this feels so hard
  • 09:25 Why the scale is terrible daily feedback (and messes with your head)
  • 10:40 When weight starts feeling like a measure of your worth
  • 13:38 What changes when weight loss isn’t the main focus anymore
  • 15:37 “But i still want to lose weight…” let’s talk about that
  • 17:05 The foundation that actually quiets food noise
  • 19:16 What it feels like when food stops being the main character

What happens after you stop a GLP-1? If you're like Heather, you might see 30 of the 45lbs you lost come back, food noise return, and ask yourself repeatedly "Why can't I just eat like a NORMAL person?"

This episode is for anyone who:

  • Lost weight on a GLP-1
  • Came off it hoping to “maintain naturally”
  • And then watched the food noise, binge urges, and weight creep back in

Heather joins me to share her story of:

  • Life before GLP-1s
  • How she felt on the medication
  • And the emotional whiplash that happened when she stopped
  • Plus... what she did to stop food noise without going back on the GLP-1.

We talk about the part no one prepares you for:

👉 GLP-1s can change appetite, but they don’t teach you how to eat, trust yourself, or break all-or-nothing patterns.

BECOME MY NEXT SUCCESS STORY: Nourished & Free®

TOPICS COVERED:

  • Heather’s relationship with food before GLP-1s
  • What it felt like when food noise disappeared on the medication
  • Why the weight and urges came back after stopping
  • The emotional toll of regain (and the shame no one talks about)
  • Perfectionism, all-or-nothing thinking, and binge cycles
  • Why “just eat normally” isn’t actually helpful advice
  • How alcohol quietly fueled binge eating
  • What finally helped Heather feel calm around food again
  • The difference between willpower and effortless self-control
  • Why this work isn’t about another plan, diet, or rule set

JUMP TO:

02:50 How dieting, work, and motherhood shaped her relationship with food
05:40 What GLP-1s fixed and what they didn’t

23:19 Alcohol and late-night binges
29:05 What eating like a “normal person” looks like now

SHE'S BACK!!! Cory Ruth (aka The Women’s Dietitian) is here to talk about her brand new book, PCOS Is My Power, and why she’s determined to make PCOS feel less like a life sentence and more like a gift.

You’ll also hear a very real conversation about how restrictive PCOS advice (hello, “just do keto”) can backfire, especially if you already struggle with food noise, binge eating, or an all-or-nothing mindset.

Bottom line: PCOS can be managed, your body isn’t broken, and you don’t have to eliminate your favorite foods to start feeling better (yes, you can eat pasta with PCOS… and dessert… and cheese).

  • Follow Cory on Instagram - @thewomensdietitian
  • Cory's website - thewomensdietitian.com
  • Cory's 1st visit to the Nourished & Free® podcast - "Help, I have PCOS!"

TOPICS COVERED:

  • What PCOS is (and what it isn’t) in plain English
  • The 3 diagnostic criteria and how diagnosis actually works (need 2 out of 3)
  • Common symptoms: irregular cycles, acne, hair changes, weight gain, and more
  • Why “no carbs/no dairy/no gluten” advice can fuel food obsession + binge cycles
  • The “your body is your barometer” reframe: symptoms as feedback, not failure
  • How managing PCOS supports long-term health (blood sugar, heart health, diabetes risk)
  • What Cory hopes readers gain from the book

If food feels like the background noise of your entire life, this episode is for you.

GLP-1 meds like Ozempic and Wegovy can quiet food noise dramatically. Unfortunately, this only lasts while you're actively taking the medication. For many, they can't stay on them forever or don't want to start them at all. Even still, there are some currently on a GLP-1 but the food noise has come back. What then?

If you need a plan to reduce food noise more with or without being on a GLP-1, this episode is for you.

TOPICS COVERED:

  • 00:00 What “food noise” really means
  • 01:11 Understanding Food Noise: Definition and Experience
  • 06:24 The Biological Basis of Food Noise
  • 09:34 Why GLP-1s seem to “turn off” food thoughts
  • 16:08 How to quiet food noise without medication (this can also help if you ARE on a GLP-1 but the food noise has come back)
  • 25:31 Next steps

The one truth most people miss?

You’re not supposed to eliminate food thoughts entirely.
The goal isn’t silence.
The goal is peace.
Food should take up 5% of your brain, not 95%.

Start listening to learn how to make that happen.

What happens when you’ve spent your whole life thinking about food and your weight from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed… and suddenly your mind feels calm for the first time ever?

In today’s Client Confessional, Heidi (now in her mid-60s) opens up about a lifetime of struggling with her weight, binge eating, food noise, and the constant mental chatter that dictated her every day. From Weight Watchers at 14, to lap-band surgery, to Overeaters Anonymous, to GLP-1 medications… she tried everything hoping something would finally “fix” her.

But nothing touched the emotional and psychological roots keeping her stuck.

And after decades of failures, she genuinely believed she was “too far gone” to change.

Inside this episode, Heidi shares:

  • What it’s like to live a double life with food for over half a century
  • The moment she realized weight loss strategies weren’t the issue—the emotional patterns were
  • Why she joined Nourished & Free even though she was convinced it wouldn’t work
  • The mindset shift that finally stopped her daily convenience-store binges
  • How a GLP-1 helped her, and where it fell short.
  • What healing looks like in your 60s, and why it’s never too late to rewrite your story

If your life revolves around food, if you feel stuck in cycles you can’t break, or if you’re scared that you’ve “tried everything,” this episode is the reminder you need: peace is possible at any age, you might just need to dig into your head a little more.

You can crush it in your career, manage a family, and hit every goal on your vision board… But your secret stash of food says otherwise 👀

In this episode, I’m breaking down why perfectionists (the high-functioning, Type A, “I’ve got this” women) are the ones MOST likely to binge in secret.

We’ll talk control, shame, biology, and the sneaky psychological loops that keep even the most “together” woman stuck in food chaos.

TL;DR Bingeing isn’t a failure. It’s your body and brain begging for a break

WHAT WE'LL COVER:

  • 00:00 — The Hidden Link Between Perfectionism and Binge Eating: Why the women who “have it all together” are often the ones secretly struggling with food.
  • 02:39 — Inside the Type A Mind: When Discipline Turns Into Food Control: How high achievers use structure as safety—and why it backfires.
  • 05:02 — The Restrict–Binge Cycle No One Talks About: What really happens when “being good” with food flips into “I blew it.”
  • 07:11 — The Psychology of Losing Control Around Food: How stress, shame, and emotional suppression feed the binge-perfectionism loop.
  • 10:07 — Is It Willpower or Biology? The Hunger Signals You’re Ignoring: Why your body isn’t betraying you—it’s trying to protect you.
  • 12:44 — The Secret Shame That Keeps Binge Eating Hidden: Why Type A women binge in private and how secrecy fuels the cycle.
  • 17:14 — Mindset Shifts to Break Free From Perfectionism and Food Guilt: How to move from “all-or-nothing” to self-compassion and progress.
  • 20:17 — Practical Strategies to Stop the Perfection-Binge Loop: Real-life tools to create structure without obsession.
  • 23:00 — Redefining What ‘Healthy’ Looks Like for a Perfectionist: Letting go of the rules and creating your version of balance.
  • 24:50 — When to Get Support (and What Real Recovery Looks Like): How to know when it’s time to reach out and what help actually helps.

Is Overeaters Anonymous (OA) a lifeline for food struggles, orrrrrr another "just don't eat it" diet in disguise? In this tell-all episode, I tap into the origins of OA, its 12-step model, and the red flags I’ve seen firsthand working with clients who turned to OA for help with binge eating and emotional eating. 🚩

And if you find the show helpful, don’t forget to leave a rating and review — it helps this podcast reach more women who need freedom from food guilt and binge eating. 😁😁😁

Binge eating isn’t just something that happens when you’re stressed out with a pint of ice cream; it’s often built into the culture of certain sports.

I'm sitting down with fellow dietitian and strength coach Malisa Nguyen, RD (founder of Strength and Intent) to pull back the curtain on how binge eating and disordered eating are normalized in the world of powerlifting — and what athletes and coaches can do differently.

TOPICS COVERED:

  • 🏋️‍♀️ The hidden side of powerlifting nutrition — why “making weight” often comes at the expense of health
  • 🍔 Binge eating after weigh-ins — how it’s normalized, glamorized, and why it can be harmful long-term
  • 🧠 Recovery & physique goals — can you pursue fat loss or body composition changes after disordered eating without relapsing?
  • 💬 The power of intention — why your why matters more than the macros
  • 👭 Support systems — how coaches, dietitians, and community can make or break an athlete’s relationship with food

Whether you’re an athlete, coach, or just someone who wants to know if you can pursue fitness goals without sliding back into old food struggles — this conversation is a game-changer.

JUMP TO:

01:08 – How Malisa went from business major → dietitian

05:47 – Growing up with mixed food/body messages (clean your plate… but don’t get fat 🙃)

10:22 – Can you actually chase fitness goals without wrecking your head?

This one’s a little different from the usual Nourished & Free® vibes because today I’m joined by my husband, Vincent, to share the story of our son Nicholas’s birth. 🩵

If you’ve listened to Penelope’s and Cillian’s birth story episodes, you know I love recording these—not just to remember all the details for us, but because you all seem to love the wild, emotional, funny, real-life rollercoaster that birth always is. And trust me… Nicky’s story was a ride.

TOPICS DISCUSSED:

🩵 The dramatic season leading up to his birth (house stress, business dips, and oh yeah—Vin rupturing his Achilles 6 weeks before my due date 🤦‍♀️)
🩵 What it’s like to be overdue (by my standards) and totally over it
🩵 The Miles Circuit, bloody shows, and the weird joy of finally being in pain
🩵 Why I was pushing Vincent around the hospital in a wheelchair while contracting to Justin Bieber
🩵 My experience in the low-intervention suite and choosing an unmedicated birth
🩵 The terrifying moment Nicholas was born and didn’t breathe right away—and the hours he spent in the NICU
🩵 How that season of struggle finally turned into a turning point for our family

It’s raw, it’s real, it’s emotional, and it’s also filled with laughter (because how else do you cope when you’re both miserable but also bringing new life into the world?).

Whether you’re a birth story junkie, a fellow mama who gets it, a friend who's curious, or you just love hearing how God reigns & rules over all, this one’s for you.

My husband Vincent and I are unpacking Netflix’s brand-new documentary Fit for TV, a deep dive into The Biggest Loser. We're sharing our thoughts on the stories, scandals, and shocking truths behind one of the most infamous weight-loss shows of all time. Whether you have seen the doc or would rather skip it and hear what someone else thought, I think you'll enjoy sitting in on our thoughts after watching.

From “temptation challenges” to behind-the-scenes medical battles, we've got plenty of unfiltered thoughts on what the show got wrong, what the documentary revealed, and why shows like this shaped an entire generation’s views on weight, health, and self-worth.

Expect plenty of "did that seriously happen!?", marital bickering, and some metabolism 101.

Also, highly recommend listening on 1.2x speed.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

  • What Fit for TV revealed about The Biggest Loser’s hidden dangers
  • The shocking calorie and exercise demands contestants endured
  • Whether weight loss reality shows create lasting harm or quick entertainment
  • How weight stigma and shame feed binge eating and body image struggles
  • Why metabolism myths (like “starving breaks your metabolism forever”) are misunderstood
  • What Michelle wished the documentary had covered about binge eating disorder

Studies mentioned:

WOW Yates Nutrition, LLC has officially been established for 5 years! I AM SO BLESSED.

Seems like a great time to (potentially) roast myself and see what past clients (those who have been on their own after working with me for at least 6 months) have to say about me. I took peeks here and there at what the responses were saying, but this is the first time I'm sitting down after the last wave of responders and seeing the final results.

If you have ever wondered if long term healing is actually possible, what life after Nourished & Free® looks like, and if I actually do help people - stick around and find out.

Today I’m joined by my former client and licensed therapist Julianne — who brings the perfect mix of clinical wisdom and “yep, I’ve been there” energy to this conversation. She gets honest about what brought her to Nourished & Free® in the first place — think postpartum chaos, generational baggage, medical trauma, and some real mixed signals from both church and culture about what her body “should” be.

We get into the messy, often-ignored space where faith, food, and body image collide — and talk about what it actually means to honor God with your body (hint: it’s not obsessing over every calorie or shaming yourself into submission). We cover everything from performance vs. perfection to raising daughters in a world that still acts like thinness = holiness.

Whether you share our faith or not, this episode is packed with raw honesty, relatable “oh my gosh, same” moments, and some hard-hitting truths about food shame, body image in the church, and finding freedom in the gray area.

If this conversation hits home and you're tired of doing this food + body image stuff alone, Nourished & Free® might be exactly what you need. It’s my group coaching program where we ditch the guilt, unpack the shame, and rebuild your relationship with food in a way that’s actually sustainable (and not miserable). Learn more or apply here.

Your Chiropractor’s Not Gonna Love This Episode 😬

I sat down with Trevor Zierke, DC, a disillusioned chiropractor who has a LOT of dirt to share on his field. We dig into the wild world of chiropractic care, from sketchy X-ray sales tactics and essential oil upsells to why some chiropractors think they can cure literally anything with a back crack.

We talk red flags (like telling you they can fix your PCOS), green flags (like knowing when to refer out), and why your posture probably isn’t the root of all evil. Trevor also breaks down why some people do feel better after seeing a chiropractor—and why that doesn’t always mean it’s the adjustment doing the work.

If you've ever been told your spine is to blame for your kid's ADHD, endo, reflux, or mood swings… buckle up.

This episode is for anyone who’s:

  • Curious about the real science behind chiropractic care
  • Been burned by overpromising, under-delivering clinics
  • Wondering whether adjustments are helpful or just hyped
  • A tired mom who's been told their baby needs spinal work (nope)

This one pulls back all the curtains—and probably saves you a (copay or ten).

You ever find yourself eating stale chips, freezer-burned ice cream, or the kid’s hairy granola bars and think:

“This isn’t even good… so WHY am I still eating it?”

Yep. Welcome to the club — where your taste buds are unimpressed but your brain is apparently hosting a food rave anyway.

In today’s episode of Nourished & Free®: The Podcast, we’re unpacking one of the most confusing parts of binge eating:
👉 Why you sometimes binge on foods you don’t even like.

Inside this episode:

  • Why restriction turns your brain into a chaotic food hoarder
  • How emotional eating isn’t the enemy (but maybe your rules are)
  • What’s really going on when you eat like it’s your last meal on Earth… and it’s not even a good one
  • How to start choosing food that’s satisfying on purpose (novel concept, I know)

So if you’ve ever rage-snacked your way through the pantry and thought,
“Cool, now I feel gross and unsatisfied,”
this episode was made for you.

🧠 It’s part psychology, part nutrition — and completely judgment-free.

🎧 Grab your headphones and hit play. Your brain (and your taste buds) deserve better.

Is Intuitive Eating really any different from just not dieting? 🤔 Why is it so hard to know what it is and how to do it? But at the same time, you hear people say it's easy to do, and the most sustainable solution for a lifetime of a healthy and nourishing relationship with food. So what's going on? I'm diving deep into the latest Netflix doc You Are Where You Eat and sharing my views as a registered dietitian. If you haven't heard about it yet, it's a study on identical twins changing their diets and lifestyles for eight weeks in a unique scientific experiment designed to explore how certain foods impact the body.

My husband Vincent is joining me on this one, and we're both scratching our heads over some of the stuff they claimed. We stayed silent the whole way through while watching all 4 episodes so we could wait to discuss our thoughts while mic’d up for the podcast. Listen live as we reveal our thoughts to each other on this episode from the perspective of a registered dietitian + my husband (representing a normal viewer).

From what they did well, uncovering the bad, and the downright bizarre, we're laying it all out there for you. Here's my honest reaction with a bonus of my husband's target viewer opinion.

Since BeachBody rebranded last year to BODi they have stated that their approach has changed when it comes to fitness, nutrition and mindset. BUT is that really true? It's time that I answer all your questions, review the research, and offer up my honest insights.

I shed light on BODi's history (2 men with 0 qualifications???), why I suspect they chose now to rebrand, we explore the MLM (multi-level marketing) side of the business, and the issues I have with it.

Curious about their nutrition programs, and if what they promote around "helping you see food differently and love every bite" is fact or misleading? I'm sharing what I think about everything they offer, and you might be surprised that not everything is as bad as people suggest.

So here's a long-awaited, highly requested, info PACKED dietitian review of BODi (formerly BeachBody).

You've probably never thought about how diets are similar to dating. You know the times when you're hiding your date from friends? Or should I say hiding that snack in your room so no one sees you eating it?

Yeah, there's a lot of parallels. Let's talk about them.

I'm excited for Toni Marinuci MS, RD to join me today to share how dieting and dating are similar by explaining different scenarios that you might relate to and why jumping from diet to diet (hello, New Year!) probably isn't the solution for you.

We also discuss the challenge of combating misinformation online (this is hard, we know), the importance of seeking help for eating disorders, and the significance of your mindset in overcoming binge eating.

Ever felt like food was the only thing making you happy? But at the same time, it also makes you feel guilty every time you eat something not 'healthy' and so you'd get mad at yourself and beat yourself up over it?

So did Lindsey.

She was stuck in this unhealthy relationship with food. From losing a boatload of weight through Weight Watchers to piling it back on during the pandemic.

Lindsey was feeling tired of not seeing sustainable, long-term weight loss and she was fed up with viewing food as 'points', starving herself and constantly thinking how much it'll cost her to eat a slice of cake.

She was hesitant to join Nourished & Free because what if it didn't work? What if she failed again?

But since joining she has reshaped her relationship with food, she's found the GOLDEN TICKET (her own words!)

You might remember when I was a Health At Every Size (HAES®) advocate. HAES is a compelling rival to diet culture, and it’s easy to get sucked into this popular movement.

I've changed my tune a bit, and I’ve written about my thoughts on HAES®, but I knew I needed to recruit someone else onto the podcast so we could critically look at this movement together and have a balanced conversation about it. That’s why this week’s guest is Dr. Idz.

Dr. Idz is not only a powerhouse in his field but also has a knack for debunking health movements and trends. If you’ve seen his TikToks or Instagram reels, you’ll know what I mean.

No stone will be left unturned as Dr. Idz brings the receipts of studies showing HAES® to be incorrect in ways, and we’re talking about A LOT of studies.I’m reallyexcited for you to hear this episode with Dr. Idz. It's sometimes hard to know what advice online (and offline) is credible or not, and seeing someone who is a 'Dr', 'nutritionist' or even 'dietitian' might make us assume they are a trustworthy source... but that's not always the case. Dr Idrees Mughal MBBS, MRes, DipIBLM (@Dr_Idz on socials) is joining me today to demystify the cloud of confusion around who you should trust.

We explore the key red flags to look out for (and some green flags to keep in mind!) when you're looking to follow content creators' advice about health/wellness. Dr. Idz also shares the challenges of providing personalized nutritional advice in the healthcare system and why there are so many limitations placed on providing patients with tailored advice.

The Optavia® diet gets some women great results, but at what cost? Today I'm joined by Alizabeth who is an ex-Optavia® coach, she initially went through the program, lost over 100lbs, and then was recruited to become a coach blinded by the dream of financial freedom. She's now pulling back the curtain to the diet in this tell-all episode. 👀

We explore the cult-like mentality, the negative side effects of eating less than 1000 calories a day, and how the coaches are more focused on money instead of their clients. We all know how these extreme diets leave people with no support AND how they can just gain it all back once they stop taking their products, but thankfully Alizabeth approached me and she's learnt how to eat grapes again without feeling guilty (an unfortunate side effect of Optavia® she experienced).

If you're curious to uncover the truth about Optavia® and discover how Alizabeth broke free from its grasp, tune in to this episode now!

Have you ever been stuck in a cycle of restrictive diets, counting every calorie, and battling guilt with every weigh-in? Join us as we talk with previous Nourished & Free™ member, Jaime, about her journey to food freedom. Jaime opens up about her experiences with a program that was fixated on the restrictive mindset and dieting, leading her down a path where she obsessively counted calories and found herself riddled with guilt at weigh-ins. Feeling trapped, she sought a more sustainable approach to nutrition, one that wouldn't have her measuring lettuce leaves to meet caloric intake goals.

Jaime's story doesn't end here. She made the brave decision to deviate from the restrictive mindset she was used to and moved towards a healthier balance with food and body image. She shares her transformational journey working with me and how it changed her outlook on body image, food, and gave her the confidence to eat without guilt or restrictions. Jaime also discusses how this was a sustainable nutrition program that has helped her maintain her results. If you're seeking a more sustainable way to achieve food freedom and break away from the guilt associated with restrictive diets, Jaime's story will be a beacon of hope.

Join me in this 2 part series with Hannah Saffold, RDN, LD. Hannah and I co-host this episode on the battles dietitians are facing daily with disordered eating/eating disorders. Hannah is an experienced dietitian with a mission to promote healthier relationships with food among dietitians and dietitians-to-be. Together, we share our personal experiences with disordered eating and lift the lid on some shocking industry statistics.

The conversation takes a deep turn when we explore the 'wounded healer' archetype, a phenomenon that's surprisingly common in the dietetics, fitness, health, and therapeutic fields. The discussion unveils the often unspoken judgment and shame experienced by nutrition students and dietitians wrestling with their own disordered eating.

If you are grappling with disordered eating, or suspect that you might have an eating disorder, you're not alone. We're here to support you, to stand by you, and to help you navigate this journey. Tune in as we unravel the complexities of being in this industry.

Join us in part 2 as we talk about the nuances of intuitive eating as well as the concerns we have around some of the new(ish) culture shifts around the intuitive eating space.

What if the key to improving our mental health and relationship with food was to take a deeper look at the powerful influence of social media? In this eye-opening conversation, I'm joined by Dr. Jillian Lampert, a fellow registered dietitian and the Chief Strategy Officer for Accanto Health. Dr. Lampert's extensive experience in eating disorders, neurobiology, and her passion for helping people improve their relationship with food and their bodies provide valuable insights on this important topic.

Together, we explore the connection between body image and social media, discussing how these platforms, initially created for connection, have evolved to focus on curated images and content, often leading to a need for validation and comparison. Dr. Lampert shares her thoughts on the psychology and neurobiology behind the compelling nature of social media, and how it affects our self-esteem, body image, and overall mental well-being. Don't miss this incredibly informative episode that will leave you with a deeper understanding of the powerful influence of social media on our lives - especially on our children.

I'm joined once again by my  husband, Vincent Yates, to discuss the quick and surreal birth of our son, Cillian (sill-ian) in honor of his 1st birthday this month. This birth was the complete opposite of our daughter and was truly an answer to so many of our prayers. From the birthday party that was supposed to happen that day to the epidural not working in time, this was a completely wild yet completely amazing day.

By the way, I fully expected this episode to be 20 minutes, but here we are. Nobody is actually going to listen this this though, right?

I've always wanted to record the birth stories of our children, so I'm doing it now in honor of our daughter turning 3 and our son turning 1 this month... and who doesn't love to hear the husband's side of the birth story? 😂

I'm joined today by my  husband of 5 years, Vincent Yates aka the father of my beautiful babies. We walk through our first-born's 28 hour, medicated birth and... and how much we hated how the nurses and OBGYN handled everything.

For women who want to lose weight, the first reaction is to go on a diet. But do diets work for weight loss long term? Spoiler: NO!

Why do these diets NEVER WORK? It feels like every time we lose weight as the result of a diet, we end up gaining it all back (sometimes with interest).

I'm talking about the science of what that is and what we can do instead to save us all the heartache that dieting brings.

Instead of throwing your hands up in the air a few months from now, let's save you the stress on the front end. Take a listen and get ready to find out why diets don't work and what to do instead!

Women struggling with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) are often told to diet, lose weight, get on birth control, and then come back later when you want to get pregnant. This is a problem.

As a woman with PCOS myself, I've found that this is the worst advice you can possibly receive.

In this episode, I dive deep into PCOS and disordered eating with specialist, Megan Miller. Megan completed her Bachelor of Science in Nutrition from Western Kentucky University in 2016. She then went on to complete her dietetic internship through Morrison Healthcare, while also completing her Masters of Science in Nutrition from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2018.

She is now a Health at Every Size Registered Dietitian, based out of the Indianapolis area. She specializes in disordered eating, eating disorders, and PCOS. Throughout her career as an outpatient dietitian, she has watched women struggle with failed diets, obsessive food rules, and poor body image. Her goal is to break this cycle and help women to live the life they deserve.

If you’re a health and wellness provider, you probably noticed this interesting divide among the community. This divides states that you are either for:

  1. Diet Culture, or for

  2. Health At Every Size (HAES)

While I 100% do not align with diet culture and think it is one of the most harmful things that has ever come into our society, I used to think that in order to be anti-diet culture, I had to be HAES-aligned.

So I was. But I’m not thrilled to be saying that anymore.

Today, I want to provide some Health At Every Size criticism from the viewpoint of a HAES(ish) dietitian.

If you are a HAES professional - you're probably not going to like this. That's okay. I'm not writing this to make anyone feel warm and fuzzy. I'm writing because I feel that we are missing some really huge red flags regarding the HAES bubble.

This post is not to change anyone's minds about HAES who are passionate about it. This post is for those who have blindly followed suit because they were too afraid to do otherwise. This is for those who feared being called out by HAES providers. This is for all of us to start asking some questions (and subsequently seek those answers) that perhaps had not been asked before about HAES.

Ready for some Health At Every Size criticisms?

Depending on who you talk to, some will say that using intuitive eating to lose weight is inappropriate. This can be really confusing for my clients who know that their bodies are not at their set point weight because their relationship with food has been unhealthy for a while, thereby causing the weight gain.

Rather than always saying the desire of weight loss is harmful, I want to change the narrative and say: the focus behind our behaviors and the motivations for losing weight is what can be harmful.

Let's talk about the things we do need to focus on instead.

If you’ve ever been to the doctor, you’ve likely been told by a health professional what your BMI is. If your BMI was “too high”, my guess is you were told you need to lose weight. Doesn’t matter if all other health markers were perfect—if that one number was off, you were told to fix it.

The terms of healthy, overweight, and obese are unfortunately based on the BMI scale, which is not an accurate measure of health at all. Let’s talk more about why this form of measurement can cause more harm than good.

When having a conversation with someone who says “I binge eat”, it’s important to learn what that means to them. Are they really binge eating, or do they just think they are?

The experience of binge eating varies with each person; what some consider a binge is really not a true binge at all. However, if they chose to use that word to describe what happened, it is an indication that there is an underlying problem with their relationship with food.

In this episode,  I'll dive into what I call 'clinical' vs 'casual' binge eating. In other words, true binge eating vs sub-clinical binge eating. Both are a disruption in one's relationship with food, but the severity is slightly different.

One of the latest circulating 'challenges' or ''programs' is the 75 Hard program: aka, 'the ironman for your brain'. Why talk about it on a nutrition podcast? Because the #1 rule of the program is to follow a diet plan... so we need to talk about it.

This program is so intense that somebody actually started a 75 Soft program so it wasn't as torturous. Listen to the countless red flags as I lay out both these plans along with their implications and potential risks.

As always, here is my honest and unfiltered, dietitian review.

Are you a 'disordered eater'? You will hear me say that term a lot. In this episode, I'll break down exactly what that means as well as the different kinds of eating disorders (ED).

Content warning: if you find yourself easily triggered by talk of ED behaviors, I would not advise listening to this episode. I will be detailing the different ED diagnoses as well as how they manifest. While awareness and education on this matter is important, so is taking care of yourself. My hope is that this episode will bring more awareness and normalization to the talk of EDs as well as clarity for those who may be concerned about their own eating behaviors. I do not wish for it to cause harm, so please stop listening immediately if you find yourself with harmful intrusive thoughts.
