Stapleford Baptist Church is a ‘family’ of people who aim to follow God’s commands as recorded in the Bible. We are Christians (followers of Jesus) who are seeking a relationship with the one true God, creator of all things, loving, and merciful.
We believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Jesus died on the cross, rose again and through his death and resurrection we can be saved.
So, there is a warm welcome for you or anyone who visits us. We would love you to discover the God who found us and has made us His own!

Some people sing in the shower. Football supporters sing at a match. You may sing along with a recorded song you're listening to. But going to a building to sing as a small crowd about a person who can't be seen - that's wierd isn't it? Why on earth do we do it - and enjoy doing it rather a lot!

Back to Dr Luke's account of Jesus and his disciples. Jesus calls us all to be his followers, his disciples, but he's very clear - the demands and challenges that will face any disciple are intense. Don't decide to be a Christian without first being very clear about what it will mean for you and your relationships. You'll be no use to Jesus if you don't.

Last week we heard that those who are members of Jesus' kingdom aren't those who successfully do certain things. Instead, they are those who are renewed by God; those who repenting of their failures and trust Jesus. And that means, as this week's episode reveals, that many, many people will never become members of Jesus' kingdom. Their unwillingness to put their trust in Jesus will keep them out. Let's be sure we're not one of them!

This week Luke's account of Jesus finds him laying into rule-keeping as the way to please God. Instead, he tells anyone bothered to hear that it's God changing people from the inside, setting the free from having to DO certain things but rather making them BE renewed. Jesus has got more to teach ... and it's not comfortable to hear! "If you bother to listen to what I'm saying - and take notice", he says, "then you're going to get into problems with those who don't listen or take notice. Because any considered look at the world will tell you that there are 2, and only 2, ways to live which are complete opposites - repenting and following me to heaven, or ignoring all the evidence and all my teaching and ending up in hell". Ouch!

After teaching about the power and foolishness of worry (listen to last week's podcast), Jesus continues to get his listeners to think about where life is headed. We're not to worry about this life because there's a much greater worry coming - Heaven or Hell. "Now", says Jesus, "is the time to get ready for my return. Now is the time to make sure you're ready to meet the judge of your life".

Today we're returning to Dr Luke's account of Jesus' life on Earth. In this part, he records 3 situations in which we should be trusting in God - when we are ridiculed (or worse) for being a follower of Christ, when we think that money and 'stuff' will give us security, and when we can't see how we are going to get through a difficulty that is heading, full speed, in our direction. In each case, Jesus wants us to see the bigger picture - our Father cares for his followers and has a secure eternal place for us.

We've got to the 4rd 'mark of the church' - Discipline! Does this prompt the image of an ancient Headmaster, cane in hand? But discipline is also what characterizes a successful army marching into battle, ordered and ready for whatever the enemy will throw at it. And the church is certainly in a battle against evil. Are you disciplined enough to face him and to overcome as you follow General Jesus Christ?

Here's the 3rd 'mark of the church' - Communion a.k.a. The Lord's Supper. We've never taken a meal with the King of England (nor any other kings on earth) but today's part of the Bible tells us that Jesus' followers are under royal command to take regular meals with the King of the Universe - wow! What an amazing privilege ... and even more so when we discover how excited Jesus is about us sharing a meal with him. Are you hungry?

Following last week's introduction comes this 'mark of the church' - the preaching of God's word. It's the major role of the church, commissioned by Jesus Christ. God's word will always be a challenge to every human because it points to perfection himself and exposes all our defects. That's the reason that preachers have so often been resisted, even persecuted - but the preaching of God's word was never more critical than it is now. We need to hear it, too!

Most people spend a large proportion of their time thinking about how they appear to others. Maybe they employ careful make-up. Maybe they try to build a good reputation. Some even try to impress God with carefully considered religious and charitable behaviour. Sometimes what you see is what you get. But sometimes it's a mirage. But God sees deeper, much deeper. He sees the real you and the real me. Ouch! In today's talk we discover Jesus uncovering the real centres of some of the people he met. And his conclusion? ...... Woe!

This week, in Dr Luke's account of the life of Jesus Christ we find Jesus being accused. His enemies said he was making out he had the power of God while, in reality, he was in the grip of Satan. But Jesus exposes their twisted logic and, in so doing, shows us all that's there no middle ground - either you and I are full-on followers of Jesus or we're full-on his enemies. And everyone who doesn't respond to God's teaching is in that second of those two groups.

Our next look into Dr Luke's account of the life of Jesus Christ takes us to one of his most well-known quotes - the so-called "Lord's Prayer". We may recite it in a church service but Jesus didn't intend it as a bit of liturgy (or worse, a garbled formulaic recital). He intended it as a User Manual - How to Pray. Maybe our prayers would be better if only we'd follow this manual - after all, God the Son wrote it.

Today a one-off! It's the start of SBC's Week-of-Prayer so we're 'focussing on prayer' (or 'focusing on prayer' if you have a less UK English spelling!). But whether you're a 'Queen's English' speller or not, prayer is the basis of all communication between humans and their God. And what a God we se in Psalm 8 - how majestic, yet One we can speak to because he had declared us to be those he has made supreme over all of his creation.

At last - the greatest time of year for Christians: when we remember the final days of our Lord Jesus Christ's life, his death and then his resurrection. This year, we're using some of the prophecies of the Bible book of Isaiah - looking at Chapters 52-55. For this "Palm Sunday" our study is of the king who comes in a great, yet strange, humble glory. Today we reach the last of our studies in the Bible book of Nehemiah. Remarkable advances have been achieved by God's followers ... but the struggle is not over yet. And, once again, it is close to home that action needs to be taken. And it's just the same for us. Though we often face many external challenges, its the reformation of our own lives and hearts that often needs most attention. And that's a struggle that will never stop this side of heaven!

We're getting close to the end of our series from the Bible book of Nehemiah. The first task of the returners from exile was to rebuild the city wall - the defences against attack. Well, the job's done, and now they want to praise God and thank him for enabling them to complete the task. It's a reminder that everything good that we're able to accomplish is only because of God's help ... and that brings joy!

The city wall has been repaired. The people living in it have faced up their sins and confessed them. having discovered, first hand, the alternative (!) they're determined to live the way that God had planned for them. And today we see that blessings arise from that ... but not accidentally. Rather some serious organization is needed - and God's blessing is found in that.

Being sorry for the past is a common feeling. But redirecting our futures so that the sorrows of the past can be put behind us is something else. And when it comes to being sorry towards God for the way we've spurned his love, turning around in repentance is a real challenge. Maybe the experience of Nehemiah's fellow citizens can teach us something!

Last week we heard about the people's response as they listened to God speaking to them from the parts of the Bible that were read out loud to them. There was joy, there was obedience ... but there also needed to be confession of wrongdoing (and of the absence of rightdoing). Confession and repentance aren't easy for our stubborn hearts to do, are they? But very necessary, especially when we consider the unending mercy of God towards us.

After so much faith-fueled struggle, Nehemiah's compatriots find a joyful, spiritual dimension to their rebuilding work. There's still lots to do, and there are still many challenges that they face, but when they realize what God has been doing, and will do, they can't help but celebrate. And how does this realization come about? By looking in what God has written down in his book, the Bible. That's what we're doing today! Do you realize what God's been doing and will do?

Today we reach the turning point in the story of Nehemiah. In the first 6 chapters that we've looked at in previous weeks, he's had to face, and overcome, all sorts of problems in order to complete the building up of his ruined city. But now, stage 1 is complete and the city's community needs to be built. So Nehemiah looks back to the list of people who'd resettled in the city. People a bit like you and me!

Nehemiah faces a huge task. God wanted him to get the walls of a whole city restored and the gates reconstructed. But this seemed like an impossibility ... and it was until the people caught hold of God's plan and power. Then they worked in harmony with each other, each taking up their share of the task. Today we start our studies in the Bible book called Nehemiah. We get to meet Nehemiah in his job as an important servant of a heathen king. Nehemiah's gets some bad news, his heart is breaking and his face shows it. It's dangerous to appear before the king looking sad - be happy or else! Will Nehemiah survive (yes, of course he will, otherwise there wouldn't be any more chapters of the Bible book to look at!)? Will he be able to resolve the things that make him sad? That will prove more difficult ... just as well he's starting in the right place!

Here's the third look at Chapter 9 of the Bible book of Isaiah. In the midst of the gloom of Isaiah's world, and in the midst of the mess that's our world, we've already seen that the arrival of King Jesus brings peace and brings hope. But today we're going to find that he brings justice. With so many crooks around we might go "Yes! At last!", but then we find that Jesus' justice affects everyone of us because no-one is guilt free before the holy God.

The second look at our Christmas King ... Jesus is not just the King who brings hope but also the one who brings peace. We live in a very unpeaceful world, between countries, between groups of peoples, in families and even in our own heads. We need peace desperately. And Jesus brings peace by dealing, first of all with our lack of peace with God. Only then we can begin to bring peace in our own lives and around us.

At last! Christmas is here at SBC ... and at the start of our Advent series we've just got to the start of the next chapter of the Bible book of Isaiah. In the midst of the gloom of Isaiah's world, and in the midst of the mess that's our world, God introduces us to a King who brings hope in any and every situation - in yours, mine and in anyone's who will take him as their king.

After last week's glimpse of God in his glory, Isaiah (and us) are plunged into the depths of disaster. Isaiah's son is born with the warning from God that war is imminent - war which will result in the army being shattered and the country being plundered by the enemy. And, for many, even God himself won't provide a sanctuary - instead many will find God to be the final hurdle at which they fall. Finally, utter darkness and exile from God will result. Gloomy? Yes. Desperate? Yes. Hopeless? Listen and find out!

Although we've been looking at the first few chapters of the Bible book of Isaiah for several weeks, today is the first time we get to see the prophet Isaiah up close. God gives him an awful job to do - and the encouragement God gives him is an immense shock for Isaiah - God reveals Isaiah's helplessness and hopelessness in a dramatic way ... but he also shows that Isaiah that can rely 100% on God.

More darkness to unpick in chapters 3 & 4 of the Bible's book called Isaiah! This week we see Isaiah the prophet laying into his hearers on behalf of God. "You've brought calamity upon yourselves". It's a message we all need to hear as everyone of us has to a greater or lesser degree failed to keep to God's standards. But, as last week, there's a glimmer of hope - for God himself, who we've all mistreated and ignored at some time or another, is constructing a shelter from the judgement we deserve ... a shelter for everyone who turns to him honestly and sincerely.

Today we start a new series on Sunday mornings in which we'll look at the first 9 chapters of the Bible's book called Isaiah. Isaiah was a prophet to whom God gave a challenging job - to tell his hearers that calamity was about to fall upon them. And Chapter 1 of this book is the start of his wake-up call. Those to whom Isaiah gave his message really needed to hear what he had to say ... their lives might depend on them taking action. And we're not so different. So we're taking as our starting point the model that the Apostle Paul. provides at the beginning of his letter to the Christians in Colossae - lots of thanks to God for how he'd changed the believers for the better; lots of prayer that God would continue changing the believers, and lots of praise-filled worship for what God had done for the believers. Jesus Christ is often said to have been a great teacher. Well, today we take a look at (or should that be 'a listen to') Jesus' first sermon as recorded by Luke. In some ways it's Jesus' manifesto of who he is and what he does. And in giving this sermon, Jesus stirs up some anger from those who don't want to listen to his remarkable message. But, as is still true today, while Jesus' words anger some, he's greatly appreciated by others.

Some years ago, one of the Royal Family visited Nottingham and did a walkabout. Crowds of people came to see her and hoped to shake her hand or to exchange a few words with her. Imagine if her reply had been 'Don't look at me, look at the person who's coming next, they're a 1000 times more important than me'! One week before the death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. One week before what we call Easter. At the moment, everything's looking rosy - it's Palm Sunday and most people are giving Jesus the red carpet treatment (well, a green carpet of palm leaves!). But it will only be a few days before Jesus will be arrested on a trumped-up charge, found guilty, purely out of convenience to his accusers, tortured, crucified and buried. Are you a 'palm leaf wielder' or someone who'll wield a hammer to nail him to the cross?

It's easy to point the finger at others - in this case at the returned exiles who started to behave just like their predecessors who'd been exiled because of their behaviour. Finally, Ezra himself appears in the book bearing his name! Many years have passed since the events of Chapter 6 and God's people have lost a lot of their enthusiasm to worship God. They need a wake-up call! And God sends someone, Ezra, who has dedicated himself to God even gets the king of the day to support Ezra's mission. Maybe if we dedicate ourselves to God we'll be able to achieve God's mission for us.

So, here we are almost halfway though the Bible's book of Ezra. The exiles who've returned have been knocked back in Chapter 4, but they get themselves back into action. They've been reminded how God worked in the past, so they press on even though there are difficulties, assured that God is with them. Almost there! It's Christmas Eve and we've reached the 4th in our Advent series. Today we meet Mary for the first time. Probably a youngish teenager, an angel surprises her, more than a little, with the news that God has decided that she will give birth to his Son - a boy to be named Jesus because he's to be the Saviour. In this third Advent season service, we're minutes later in the story from last week. Zechariah, has his voice back and uses it to praise God for his tremendous intervention - bringing rescue, redemption and the ability to enjoy God. He's got God-given words for his baby son too - that he'll be instrumental in gathering a multitude of people to God as they receive complete forgiveness, mercy and guidance 'into the path of peace'. In our second Advent season service, we've moved on about a year. Zechariah, who was struck dumb in last week's investigation, has to give a name to his newborn son. When he indicates that the name is what God has chosen beforehand, he finds his voice and lets rip in praise to God. Everyone is amazed and asks themselves "Just who is this baby going to be?". There Jesus reigns perfectly and peaceably over citizens who joyfully accept his rule. There God has made every citizen perfect. The Jews thought that their temple worship was the best of the best, but the writer of the Bible book of Hebrews says it's only a pointer ... but what a pointer because it points the Jesus Christ. The temple the writer was talking about was destroyed almost 2000 years ago, but the lessons it taught about Jesus Christ still need to be learnt today - by us. As we begin the Autumn programme at SBC, we've chosen, for the first Sunday, to consider a biblical new beginning. Joshua, who has been Moses' helper for many years suddenly has to step into the role of leading the march of a huge number of men, women, children and livestock across a deep river and into enemy territory. It' definitely a new beginning for him and, ignoring the fact that rivers are made of water (!) it's a baptism of fire. How will he cope? Finally, after a long wait, the key human in our Summer series - Abraham - has got the son God promised him and for whom he's been waiting for absolutely ages. And now God asks him to sacrifice his son. WHAT! As the story unfolds we find that God wants to teach Abraham, and us too, a vital lesson. Evil needs punishment. It's so bad that the ultimate punishment is due ... it will destroy every one of us unless God himself steps in to take the punishment himself. And that's what Jesus Christ has done for everyone who trusts him.

Abraham's encounters with God ramp up to a new level in today's look into the Bible book of Genesis. God had spoken to him several times before but now Abraham meets him face-to-face. And God announces that the promises he's made to Abraham many years earlier are about to be fulfilled, never mind the apparent impossibility of that happening. Can Abraham and his wife, Sarah, trust God in such a situation when their brains shout out 'impossible'? Can we trust God when seemingly impossible situations face us?

In this excerpt from the life of Abraham, we find God being amazingly good and Abraham laughing in disbelief. But while Abraham's initial response may have been to doubt God, he did respond in obedience to what God asked of him. And that turn-around is a lesson for each one of us.

Abraham gets a good press in the Bible ... mostly. But like every human (except Jesus Christ) he's fallible and can be corrupt. Today we arrive at one of the great truths that the Bible book of "Hebrews" tells us about - that because of what Jesus Christ has done we can confidently go to the infinitely holy God of the whole Universe, even though each of us is, relatively speaking, is like a dirty speck on a grain of dust in his Universe. The author takes us through some of the events in history when Moses was leading the Israelites ... a group of people who often rebelled against God or moaned at him. Almost 2000 years ago, the writer showed his readers the seriousness of drifting away from Christ and urged them to keep on holding on to Christ ... and that's the same message that we need to take notice of today.

Today we dig into the first chapter of the Bible book called "Hebrews". To help the first century Christians who were beginning to lose their trust in Jesus Christ - and to help us, too - the author of this book points them to Jesus Christ, the Son of God, showing us that he's greater than the any angelic being. In fact, Jesus is God in every way. He lists Jesus' credentials as creator and sustainer of everything, the one who enables us to know God and to understand what God is doing.

Today we begin a series on the Bible book called "Hebrews". To help us, this episode gives us an overview of the book - especially of the first of its 2 major parts. We discover that the first century Christians were beginning to doubt; their trust in Jesus Christ was waning as they faced many pressures from society around them. So the author of this book writes to these dithering and doubting Christians, urging them to keep going - and he points them to Christ with 5 arguments as to why Christ is better than anyone or anything else. We still need to hear the same message that Christ is best! The author also gives them 5 warnings of the consequences of turning away from trust in Christ ... 5 warnings we need to take onboard as well.

Here's a 'special' podcast. On 1st January 2023 we had a joint service with other churches in our area to praise God at the start of the new year and to hear an explanation of his word that would help us in 2023. Given the uncertain and unsettling situation that faces us - rising cost-of-living, employment disputes, war in Europe, immigration, as well as the specific issues unique to each individual - we looked at God's message that we can learn to be content, even at such a time.

This Sunday was the farewell for our Pastor. He chose to preach on the first 3 verses of Hebrews Chapter 12, making 4 points:
1) The Christian is not alone - there are millions of other Christians now and in the past who are urging us on in our faith.
2) Sin snags us and drags us down so easily - so we must make every effort to keep clear of it.
3) Our aim must always be to move forward with Christ.
4) To do this, we need to keep looking, without distractions, at our Saviour, Jesus Christ

Jesus Rejected - We see how many of us reject Jesus' authority even though we are intolerant of the hypocrisy we are unwittingly demonstrating in our response to him.
Jesus' Authority - We discover the difference between religion and faith, and how attitudes to authority haven't changed in 2000 years.
The Battle is the Lord's. A look at the reality of our battle as Christians, the nature of the enemy, the power of the victor and the use of his army. Not what you might expect!
The verses for the year 2022. Jesus has all the authority for us to make disciples for him, and he promises to be with us as we do so.
Where will it all end? As we enter a New Year, it's important to keep in clear view the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. It will help us in 2022 ... which may be the year he returns!
Peace & Joy! A look at the message that the angel Gabriel and the choir from Heaven gave to the shepherds on the first Christmas.
Hope & Glory! A look at the story of the Magi (a.k.a. the Wise Men) and seeing how they became believers with Christ living in them - their hope of glory.
Faith. A look at the story of Joseph and Simeon and seeing the start and continuance of faith.
