Systemic therapists are well suited to consult organizations given the structural concepts pioneered by early family therapists. Additionally, family therapists are suited for consultant work with organizations because of their interest in the welfare of the individuals and the system. This interest allows the family therapists to work toward improving the interactions between managers and employees, for example, to strengthen the system’s productivity.

One word comes to mind to describe Trauma-Informed Care: that word is…compassion. With Latin origins, compassion means to suffer with (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Compassion upgrades empathy to include, not only the sharing of the emotional experience but also a desire to assist with alleviating the distress (Merriam-Webster, n.d.). Trauma-informed behavioral health practitioners operate from a perspective of understanding (i.e. empathy) and intentional responsiveness (i.e. compassion); this approach focuses on the physical, psychological, and emotional needs of the survivor and the community (SAMHSA, 2014).

Love is the foundation of a happy and enduring home. However, a house is not merely the foundation only. On top of that foundation are the walls of trust and commitment. These walls contain within the house such elements (and interior dressings) as fondness and admiration, turning towards each other (not away), maintaining a positive outlook, properly managing conflict, making life dreams come true (together), and creating shared meaning.
The challenges faced in marriage, however, are often the result of Marital Myths.

Let's face it. We all know someone who has experienced at least one traumatic event in their lives. We may be the trauma survivor. In fact, 50% of all U.S. adults will experience at least one traumatic event in their lives (NIH). Trauma can be damaging in the moment and in the aftermath. On this episode, I discuss my personal experience with trauma and PTSD. I also discuss the Conspiracy of Silence spearheaded by Dr. Yael Danieli (2009).

C.S. Lewis’, A Grief Observed, provides a poetic portrayal of his experience with grief after the death of his wife. In the book, Lewis states:
“This is important. One never meets just Cancer, or War, or Unhappiness (or Happiness). One only meets each hour or moment that comes. All manner of ups and downs. Many bad spots in our best times, and many good ones in our worst. One never gets the total impact of what we call 'the thing itself.' But we call it wrongly. The thing itself is simply all these ups and downs: the rest is a name or an idea”

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (W.E.B), was the first African American to earn a Doctorate degree from Harvard University. Du Bois’ web of civil rights activism included literary works as well as photography; which lead him to organize the creation of the Exhibit To American Negroes at the 1900 Paris Exposition. I am not a historian...just a guy learning from History.

Cue the music! In this episode, Collin Angell and I discuss music and mindfulness.
Episode Correction: I state that Michael Giacchino (one of my favorite composers) is the composer behind Avengers theme music. However, this credit goes to Alan Silvestri (another favorite) for Avengers and other great film scores.

Dr. Jamie Wilkey is a pharmacist who loves what she does and brings passion and happiness to the pharmacy profession. For the past 10 years, she has worked part-time in the community setting while growing her family. She is a mama to four little, rambunctious boys who this year are ages 3,5,7&9.
She is the founder & CEO of Arches Health, LLC, and serves there as a precision medicine consultant pharmacist focusing on pharmacogenomics. After getting her practice up and running she turned around and began promoting and empowering pharmacists to champion PGx and create their own consulting practices through her PGx Consulting Confidence Academy.
Jamie is optimistic about the future of pharmacy and knows great things are in store for those pharmacists who are willing to push boundaries, to think big, and to use the full extent of their education.
Check out Arches Health, LLC for more information! Connect with her on Linkedin or Dr. Jamie Wilkey's website.
Pharmacogenomics is the study of how genes affect a person's response to drugs. This field combines pharmacology (the science of drugs) and genomics (the study of genes and their functions) to develop effective, safe medications and doses that will be tailored to a person's genetic makeup. - Medline
