With rising interest rates, everyone is feeling the pain. No matter what sector investors are in - consumer, retail, tech, property - it feels like there is nowhere to hide. In this episode, Simon Shields, Director and co-founder of Monash Investors, joins Rory to delve into the world of small cap Australian shares. First they define small caps and the typical profile of the companies on the ASX that are part of that sector. Then they review some common misconceptions, and explore the benefits and challenges of investing in small caps.

Even though the sector has underperformed over the last 12 months, Simon explains that considering a longer term horizon and aware of the past cycles, it seems to be a good time to invest in this sector. He shares his outlook for small caps, explains how Monash is positioning their portfolio and presents a case study on two of their most successful stocks.

Diversification is an investor's best defense against market volatility. No one can predict how markets will perform so investors should focus on the things they can control such as ensuring portfolio diversification and their ability to save and contribute to their portfolio. Having a long-time horizon, staying true to a set investment strategy and tuning out the market noise are very important in the current market conditions.

In this episode Jacinta Schlosser is joined by Balaji Gopal, Head of Financial Adviser Services at Vanguard Australia, to review the 60/40 portfolio strategy and how diversification can help investors weather market volatility. They also delve into the principles of portfolio construction and the value of advice.

Listen to the first edition of The Ideas Exchange podcast.

ASX’s Senior Investment Product specialist - Martin Dinh - talks to Dan Annan from BetaShares about the rise in popularity of ETFs and the outlook for the year ahead.

In the very first episode of The Ideas Exchange podcast, host and Senior Product Manager at ASX - Martin Dinh, caught up with Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) expert, Dan Annan, who is the Director and Head of Institutional Business at BetaShares. BetaShares is one of Australia’s largest ETF providers, managing over $14 billion in assets and offering 60 ETFs on ASX.

Whilst the COVID-19 Pandemic has rocked markets globally and created uncertainty for investors, many people have chosen to start their investing journey  for the first time. Martin and Dan discussed how lockdowns and isolation freed up time for many new investors to research markets and consider investment opportunities.  They also point to the fact that millennials who did not experience the GFC are now at an age where they’ve gained enough capital to enter the market, and the pandemic has provided an opportunity to do so.

Dan and Martin also discuss the importance of diversification and the rising popularity of ETFs. They share some tips on what to look out for before investing, considering things like limit orders and the importance of doing your homework. Dan also identifies key themes to look out for in the coming months, including technology, cyber security and the global political atmosphere.
