Is the Covid-19 pandemic driving the world towards nationalism? Berry and Soff are joined by the fantastic Andrea Marinkovic to discuss this question, focusing on (Eastern) Europe, the US and China. It is safe to say the Corona crisis has affected every country’s national and foreign policies. Governments are scrambling to protect public health, their economy, and citizens' liberties. With resources being scarce, have they become more self-interested and less cooperative internationally? How have states instrumentalised aid for their own Covid diplomacy? Will the world be able to move beyond vaccine nationalism? The crisis has dramatically shifted the political climate of our societies as well. Discourses across the political spectrum are becoming increasingly polarised and nationalist sentiments are abundant. What are people demanding, and how are they affecting the world? What do NASA spacesuits, cities, medical trials and the iPhone have in common? I hear you racking your brain and the answer is indeed not very obvious… All four involve cases of thoughtless designs that have negatively affected women through exclusionary and sometimes even life threatening consequences. In this episode it is exactly these unintended consequences of such seemingly harmless design choices that we explore. We dive deep into the four case studies about space exploration, public spaces, medicine and tech and highlight how choices in the past are still impacting women today. We draw inspiration from various disciplines and dissect solutions that have been proposed to include women in the design equation. Join us and let's untangle the web of historic ripple effects to design for the present and the future.
