In episode 220 Aaron chats with Matthew Haywood of Street Legal about their new single 'The Barassi Line', the band's origins in Adelaide, influences from pub rock to new wave, their striking artwork and music videos, working with producer Anton Hagop, and upcoming regional tour dates.

Street Legal are back with a powerful new single, The Barassi Line, marking an exciting new chapter for the Adelaide indie rock five-piece. Mixed by ARIA Award–winning producer Anton Hagop—known for his work with Silverchair, Powderfinger and Missy Higgins—the track represents the band’s first collaboration with the acclaimed mixer and follows their critically praised debut EP Bruxism. With its driving, interwoven guitars and soaring, anthemic chorus, The Barassi Line captures the band at their most urgent and expansive yet. Lyrically, the track dives into big questions about power, progress and the narratives we’re fed.

As vocalist Matthew Hayward explains, it challenges “our relationship with those who control natural resources and shape the cities we live in,” unpacking ideas around growth, wealth and virtue. Sonically and thematically, Street Legal sit comfortably alongside acts like Fontaines D.C., IDLES and Interpol, while continuing to cement their place among Australia’s rising underground scene—with a run of July tour dates set to bring the new single to stages across South Australia and Victoria.

Relays Unleashed: Shann Lions on Punk and Family

Host Aaron sits down with Shann Lions of Relays to discuss the band’s new cover single “Get Free,” upcoming shows and the gritty, high-energy approach to recording and live performance.

Shan talks candidly about his neurodivergent diagnoses, bonding with his son through music, DIY touring, funding challenges for live venues, and previews tracks from their forthcoming album.

Formed in late 2023 on Djaara Country (Bendigo/Castlemaine), Relays are an unapologetically raw punk trio shaking up the Australian underground. Fronted by neurodivergent producer/guitarist Shann Lions, with Mik Weird on drums and El Wellard on bass, the band has built a reputation for chaotic, high-energy performances and fiercely DIY releases. Their self-titled debut album, recorded live to tape with Finn Keane (Wilco, Courtney Barnett), dropped in October 2024 to critical acclaim, international airplay, and a slot at Chopped Festival alongside Cosmic Psychos.

Since then, Relays have completed a 23-date national tour, supported You Am I, and wrapped their second album — funded by Creative Victoria’s New Music Works — due mid-2026. With over 30,000 Spotify streams and a growing cult following, Relays continue to push boundaries. Host Aaron sits down with Tin Town for episode 195 to discuss their album Down in the Dirt, songwriting, harmonies, and standout tracks like "Before We Begin", "Things I Got From You", "Samson" and "These Days".

The band talks about recording moments, personal influences, upcoming gigs and touring, and the emotional stories behind the songs, encouraging listeners to support their music and catch them live.

in Town isn’t just a band — it’s a heartbeat.Born from the dust and corrugated iron of Port Adelaide’s Wool Stores Precinct, this wife-and-husband duo — Courtney Robb and Snooks La Vie — craft songs that cut deep and linger long. Their sound? Raw folk-country with a blues backbone. No gloss. No gimmicks. Just stripped-back storytelling and melodies that feel lived-in. Robb’s vocals are all grit and grace — honest, textured, and heavy with meaning.La Vie’s harmonica? It doesn’t just play — it haunts. One minute it’s aching, the next it’s slicing through the silence like a switchblade.

After years of playing side by side, they’ve made it official: Tin Town is here.Inspired by the streets they walk and the stories they carry, their debut album Down in the Dirt is twelve tracks of unfiltered truth — recorded with Ryan Martin John at Cactus Cactus Sound. Think folk, country, and blues in equal measure.Best served with a glass of red, a quiet room, and nothing to prove. Tin Town sounds like real life — weathered, tender, and unapologetically authentic.

From Kiss to The Revolation: Dean Whitman-Lamb's Comeback

Host Aaron chats with Dean Whitman-Lamb of The Revolation about his musical journey from early influences like KISS and INXS to his time with Valve and new solo work. They discuss recent recordings — including "Tumblin' the Rough," "Born Again," "Liberty," and "Shattered" — the studio process, music videos, and forming a live band with help from friends like Rusty Brown from Electric Mary.

The episode also touches on personal moments, including Dean's family struggles and his son Xander's cancer diagnosis and recovery, plus local gig recommendations, Electric Mary shout-outs, and encouragement to support live music and local artists.

Melbourne’s own Dean Wittmann-Lamb isn’t just a singer/songwriter — he’s a rock survivor. Back in 2000, his band Valve got snapped up by the legendary Alberts label, signed by none other than Vanda & Young — the gods behind Aussie rock royalty. Fast-forward to the chaos of 2020.

While Melbourne was locked down and the world hit pause, Dean hit record. With a little firepower from Rusty Brown of Electric Mary, the two laid down tracks that oozed soul and swagger — gritty rock anthems inspired by the likes of The Black Crowes, Free, Humble Pie, and Faces.

By 2021, Dean was back in the studio, launching his new project: The Revolation. Three singles turned into ten. Acoustic sets turned into full-blown gigs. Raw. Real. Relentless. Since then, The Revolation has dropped 10 singles, 4 video clips, and smashed out 16 full-band gigs — plus 6 stripped-back acoustic shows where Dean bared the songs as they were born: raw, soulful, and unapologetically rock.

They’ve shared the stage with Candlebox (USA) at The Corner Hotel, Electric Mary at Musicland, and Sisters Doll at Northcote Social Club. No fluff. Just amps, sweat, and soul. Now, The Revolation is heading back into the studio in Feb 2026 — with Rusty Brown once again behind the boards. “The soul of rock is not lost.” It’s alive. It’s loud. And it’s coming for you. 🔥

Alcotomic Unplugged: From 90s Demos to the 8 Second Empire

For Fans Of: Ash, The Lemonheads, You Am I, Weezer, Screamfeeder

Host Aaron chats with John Freeman Baxter of Alcotomic about his backyard studio, the band’s new album 8 Second Empire, and the 90s Melbourne music scene that shaped their sound.

They discuss songwriting rooted in old demos, authentic recording approaches, standout tracks like "Bridges," "Sunshine," "Tom Lee Park," and "Ruby Shoes," plus video-making, mental health themes, and plans to return to live gigs — with a reminder to support local venues and call a mate.

"Alcotomic not breaking left or right but enjoying the front-facing fun of singing over the revolutions of spinning guitars ...a ‘90s sound that might have slept under the Glebe Point Bridge." Bernard Zuel Alcotomic formed in Melbourne in 1996 after singer John Freeman Baxter left Holocene. Backed by producers Lindsay Gravina and David Price, the trio developed a distinctive blend of power pop and melodic rock, gaining airplay on triple j and community radio.

Their track Living in Luxury featured on TV shows like Stingers and Good Guys, Bad Guys, and they were offered a record deal with Polygram, which fell through due to restructuring. Despite setbacks, the band continued recording and touring, appearing on ABC’s Recovery, signing with US label Not Lame Records, and showcasing at the 1998 Pacific Circle Music Conference. After disbanding in 2001, Alcotomic returned two decades later, sparked by Baxter rediscovering old demo tapes.

Joined by Doug Lee Robertson (Icecream Hands) and Jay Pinfold (Juke Kartel), the band began recording again, releasing the comeback single Bridges, which gained over 10,000 Spotify plays in six weeks. Their new album, 8 Second Empire, reflects on the short attention spans of modern listeners. Tracks tackle serious themes: Hanging Out explores addiction, Pale & Thin addresses bullying and body image, and Tom Lee Park reflects on teenage struggles. Seventeen and Ruby Shoes showcase their melodic rock roots, while Sunshine—the lead single—deals with mental health and the longing for light. Rejecting AI and overproduction, the band focused on raw, authentic performances.

Their sound blends 70's influences like Big Star with 90s' acts such as You Am I and Weezer, proving Alcotomic’s enduring relevance in 2025.

From Back Deck Gigs to Toasty Anthems: Plastic Cheeses on Episode 187

This episode of So What’s Been Happening features a lively conversation with indie trio Plastic Cheeses — their origins, new singles, music videos and standout tracks like "Pandemic of Stupid" and "Mid‑Strength Crisis."

The show also covers upcoming gigs and festivals around Victoria and NSW, band name stories, mental‑health check‑ins, record‑collecting anecdotes and a call to support local live music and venues.

Since deciding to try and be a real band, Plastic Cheeses have played a bunch of gigs in the big smoke and regionally, released four singles, put out a couple of homemade DIY film clips, had a few spins on community radio both locally and interstate, sold a few t-shirts and stubby holders and far outweighed their initial goal of playing one gig on the back deck for a party.

Plastic Cheeses’ chiming guitars, jangling riffs, bouncing basslines, laidback rhythms and sunshiny vocal harmonies are the perfect soundtrack for easing into a few quiet ones at your local. Lethargic and cathartic - they write simple, catchy songs about the happenings and observations of everyday life with a distinct tinge of Australiana. Getting older sucks. You wake up one morning and everything hurts - your neck, your back, your… you get the picture. You find it harder to stand up for long periods of time. You find it harder to stay awake. You’ve lost your piss fitness. Hangovers hurt waaaay more than they used to. Some begin to experience these pitfalls of aging, admit defeat and settle into getting old and boring without much of a fight. Some decide to still try and party like they’re in their 20s and age disgracefully. Plastic Cheeses are from the latter school of thinking.

Plastic Cheeses’ latest single, ‘Mid Strength Crisis’ is an ode to being okay with getting older, but not being okay with some of the stereotypical behaviours that are meant to come with it (i.e. sitting at home alone drinking mid strength beer).

Join us for a LIVE chat and a few tunes on Thursday 2nd October from 8:00pm AEST.

The episode also covers band lineup changes, video visuals, influences and plans for U.S. radio, plus a round-up of local gigs and festival news — a concise look at the band’s creative process and live plans.

For Fans Of: R.E.M, Hüsker Dü, The Replacements, The Hold Steady The Valery Trails (Brisbane, QLD) return with their first new music since the release of their fourth album, The Sky Is Blue, in 2022.

On the back of the album's strong airplay and positive reviews, the band toured the east coast of Australia, with new guitar recruit Tim Steward (Screamfeeder) along for the ride. Previously, as a trio, Andrew Bower (vocals/guitars), Sean Bower (bass), and Dan McNaulty (drums), released their debut album Ghosts and Gravity (2012), Buffalo Speedway (2014), and Chameleon Bones (2016).

The three albums’ melodic and atmospheric indie rock received college and specialty airplay in the US, strong community radio support in Australia, and critical acclaim from outlets such as PopMatters, The Big Takeover, and many other international websites. On the new album, Winter Palace, there’s plenty of The Valery Trails’ trademark guitar jangle and crunch, but they also explore some diverse styles and genres, including synth-pop stylings, horn-driven retro flavours, and some straight-up rock and roll, across the 13 songs.

Heading into the band’s second decade, The Valery Trails continue to strive towards their goal to build a body of work on their own terms. With Andrew at the helm, and through their collective experiences, influences, and musicianship, they've created another gem of an Australian indie rock album. Crayon Shades Live: Moderate Lovers on Songs, DIY Clips & N.W.A. Surprises

Aaron sits down with Mick Wilson of Moderate Lovers to discuss the band’s debut EP Crayon Shades, track-by-track stories (including “Lucy’s Gardening,” “Lost City” and a surprise N.W.A. cover), DIY video-making and songwriting influences.

The episode also shares upcoming gig dates, a mental-health shout-out, and a reminder to support indie music via Bandcamp Friday.

For Fans Of: Pavement, Screamfeeder, Dinosaur Jr, Swervedriver

Moderate Lovers are an indie pop/rock three-piece band from Sydney who write skewed melodic tunes with a pinch of jangle, a dash of distortion, and a healthy serving of observational dry wit. Alongside musical touchstones such as Pavement and Dinosaur Jr, you can hear the rich lineage of Australian indie music, as well as various bands from Flying Nun Records, in their sonic DNA. Indeed, their own musical resume includes time spent treading the boards with local bands such as Soap Star Joe, Starky, Restless Leg, and Froggy Prinze. Forming in 2024 after a few drinks at the Townie (aka The Town Hall Hotel, Newtown), Mick Wilson, Saul Foster, and Adam Taylor began crafting Wilson's musical sketches into a full set of indie rock earworms. In short time, they started taking those songs to live stages and appreciative audiences across the inner west of Sydney.

The band’s first single, ‘Lost City’, burst onto Australian community radio sounding like Swervedriver fronted by Robert Pollard of Guided By Voices, with a brilliant 'lost Sydney music scene' video in tow. They quickly followed it up with 'Lucy's Gardening Again', a song overflowing with sweet harmonies and jangly guitars reminiscent of the '60s British Invasion sound and modern exponents such as Teenage Fanclub.

“Firmly grounded in a nineties-style velvet glove over a steel fist, with a sound redolent of fellow compatriots You Am I or, from further afield, Dinosaur Jnr or Pavement, ‘Lost City’ hides within its impassioned melodic delivery and wall of sound a glimmer of hope and resilience.” - Backseat Mafia

We get a chance to chat to Mick Wilson from Moderate Lovers LIVE on Tuesday 16th September from 8:00pm AEST, join in the chat anytime.

Ben Mastwyk & His Millions: Let Me At The Night Lights Up Melbourne

On this episode Aaron chats with Ben Mastwyk about his new album Let Me At The Night, the creative energy behind The Millions, and the collaborative videos and limited-edition release. Ben explains his festival-ready vision, family-made clips and upcoming shows across Melbourne, Dashville and Tamworth.

The episode also highlights local gigs (Sweet Talk at Howler, Bernadette Novembre supporting a Black Dog Institute benefit), the busy music week and a heartfelt reminder to check in on someone — ask “Are you okay?” and really listen.

Let Me At The Night is a bit of a fantasy record for Ben Mastwyk – the Australian cosmic cowboy and interstellar troubadour. He really discovered the DNA of his band The Millions over the last few records, and this time, they all wanted to push the boundaries. Mastwyk was lucky enough to receive funding through a Creative Victoria Creative Works grant, which allowed him to really lean in and record the album he wanted to make, without cutting corners. Working with producer Michael Hubbard at The Shrimp Shack studio in Melbourne, Mastwyk initially set out to make a ‘90s country-inspired record—and in a way, he did. But instead of sticking strictly to that particular sonic palette, he found himself leaning back into the genre-bending, experimental approach he first explored with his original band in the actual ‘90s. "It’s still a country record in my eyes: narrative-based songs that explore the themes I’ve been circling in my writing for years," he says. "But we’ve really dialled up the experimentalism - pushed our sonic palette further than we ever have before!"

We get a chance to chat to Ben LIVE about his new release LET ME AT THE NIGHT on Thursday 11th September from 8:00pm AEST, join in the chat anytime.

"Brian Estepa's Musical Journey: From Manila to Melbourne"

Join us for episode 179 of "So What's Been Happening" as we sit down with the talented Brian Estepa to discuss his latest album, "I See It Now." This episode dives into Brian's musical journey, from his early influences in Manila to recording his seventh album across continents. Listen in as we explore the creative process behind his new songs, the importance of staying true to your musical roots, and the excitement of live performances. Don't miss this engaging chat about the joys and challenges of indie music, complete with a look at the vibrant gig scene and a special live performance from Brian himself.

Across 'I See It Now', Estepa documents an arc of personal development where themes of self-doubt, false starts, renewal and optimism form the basis for his songs that poetically connect the personal to the universal. It's all set against Estepa's consummate marriage of indie rock and power pop where melody and sonic guitar excursions exist in perfect harmony. Bryan has a strong connection with his Spanish band and producer JJ Extremera, and he'd long dreamed of being able to record with them. The importance of Extremera's role in the making of the album can't be understated.

Estepa's excitement at sending the producer demos of songs fuelled and inspired his songwriting, and then when it came to recording, Extremera was invaluable creative counterweight to Estepa's approach and ideas. Though the holy triumvirate of The Beatles, Wilco, and Big Star are still in Estepa's DNA, the musical palette has clearly widened and deepened.

We catch up with Bryan LIVE on Facebook and YouTube and discuss his musical journey. Join in the chat on Thursday 3rd July from 8:00pm AEST.

THE ELECTORATE ARE THRILLED TO RELEASE THEIR NEW ALBUM, BY DESIGN, OUT NOW VIA LOVE AS FICTION RECORDS.

The members of The Electorate (Eliot Fish, Josh Morris & Nick Kennedy) have all been part of the Australian music scene for a number of years, with ties to Big Heavy Stuff, Knievel, The Apartments, Imperial Broads, Atticus, and the Templebears. This invaluable experience has shaped their sound and informed their astute musical choices, evident on their 2020 debut album, You Don’t Have Time to Stay Lost, which received a 4.5-star review from Rolling Stone.

Their latest album, By Design, produced by Wayne Connolly (Teskey Brothers, Babe Rainbow, Underground Lovers), marks the latest culmination of their musical journeys. EP140 - So What's Been Happening? - Half Way To Where?

It's a question I have asked myself this week given my 49th birthday celebrations? Is this half way? Half way to where? Where are we heading? times ticking... how do we to let go of the daily baggage that can weigh us down, stop overthinking what's next or what might happen and just enjoy the ride and the trials and tribulations of the rest of our life.... it's easier said than done right?

In the AFL, can the Power defeat the Blues at home and stamp themselves as a genuine premiership contender? Will the Pies be too strong for the unpredictable Dogs? Can the Hawks take another scalp against the Crows? Will Harley Reid's Eagles give another 'don't argue' to the Saints at home in the west? Can the Tigers create another upset for the Cats at the cattery in Geelong? Will the Demons continue to rise above the Dockers in Alice Springs?

Can the Bombers continue their come from the clouds season and lay a foundation to cement a finals birth for the first time in a long time, or will the Suns shine on on the Gold Coast? Can the Tigers defeat the Cats at their home ground? Week off for Lions and win less Kangaroos, are the Swans that good and what about the Giants. We will have a chat and predict the winners and losers for each game. What else is on the agenda? You will have to tune in to see.

EP135 - So What's Been Happening? - The Golden Gaytimes

The Golden Gaytimes' original iteration was as The Get Rich Quick Scheme – a cover band full of hijinks and nonsense which seemed to resonate with the audience. When COVID hit and gigging stopped, the burgeoning success of The Get Rich Quick Scheme was cut short.

So, the next thing you know they were writing some originals and did a band trip to Rous Mill Studio to get some tracks down. They recorded five or six of the songs at Rous Mill in August 2021 and then the rest were done over the course of the first half of 2022 at Round the Twist studio. As the single 'I'm Tempted' (400k+ views on YouTube!) establishes, this is a band that thrives on great riffs, heady grooves and a strong sense of fun and irreverence, as Jane-O confirms, "Some of our songs can be a bit dark if you go where they are meant to go. They are hooky and funny and catchy. I’m pretty sure they rock." "This unexpected banger really displays the diversity of talent in the Aussie music scene.

This catchy and irreverent pop and post-punk track has left newly found fans itching for more! Give it a listen, I dare you!" 2SER on 'I'm Tempted' (featured single)

EP128 - So What's Been Happening? - Harvey Russell

"A troubadour that can attract listeners who enjoy the storytelling of Paul Kelly, John Mellencamp and more, Russell effortlessly infuses traditional country with Americana music."

COUNTRYTOWN Harvey Russell knows his way around a country song, both its traditional form and its contemporary manifestations as alt-country and Americana. His ability to swing from a honky tonk dance floor gem to a brooding country rock ballad is one of the keys to why Pure as the Flame is such a rewarding album. Stylistically, Russell also has an innate ability to channel the sounds of classic American songwriters and blend them with an Australian sensibility. Match that with the stellar guitar and pedal steel playing of Aaron Langman and you've got an absolutely compelling collection of Antipodean twang. Russell's band The Widowmakers, a crack unit both in the studio and on stage, brought songs such as first single 'Honey Come Back to Me' to life in the rehearsal room and recording studio. Sounding like a hip-shaking honky tonk classic, the song's chorus also revealed Wilco-like chord changes and a streak of melancholy, acting as a beautiful counterpoint to the lively verses. It's a song loosely inspired by the cat and mouse, dark competitiveness of the distorted relationship depicted in novel, Gone Girl.

FOR FANS OF: Turnpike Troubadours, John Mellencamp, Paul Kelly, American Aquarium.

EP127 - So What's Been Happening? - James Harrison (Fleeting Persuasion)

Fleeting Persuasion is the latest project of prolific Melbourne-based creative James Spencer Harrison who has also released several well-received albums, singles and EPs under the J M S Harrison moniker. The last of which, 2017’s Traced Out, was leading James towards a denser and richer full-band sound. That inspired a change of name and Fleeting Persuasion was born. In 2019 Fleeting Persuasion released the album Forever Caught, capturing a set of songs that possessed echoes of The Cure, tightly woven post-rock and Australian acts such as Bluebottle Kiss filtered through his own brand of heart-on-sleeve melancholia. It was certainly indie rock but the kind that resides in the shadows, always carving out new angles and creating interesting dynamics. Now, in 2023, there are a further two Fleeting Persuasion albums in the works. Splitting his time between Fleeting Persuasion and solo pursuits has established Harrison as a regular fixture on the live music scene, opening for renowned artists including Painters & Dockers, Steve Kilbey (The Church), Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss), Peter Fenton (CROW), Hermitage Green (Ireland), The Clouds, China Crisis and She Wants Revenge. "There is very much an early The Cure sparseness and melodic thrust, with a refrigerated edge that sends shivers up the spine." Backseat Mafia on 'Still Dark'

EP123 - So What's Been Happening? - Good Will Remedy

After their run of impressive singles, Brisbane alt-country band Good Will Remedy release their new album Sunshine State. Good Will Remedy have been serenading and rocking Australian audiences for half a dozen years now. In that time most bands might release a couple of albums, but the prolific and hard working GWR already have five albums under their belt.

Now they bring you their sixth full length release, Sunshine State. The title of the new album is "more a state of mind than location," explains songwriter, singer and bassist Will Lebihan. "The title track is an anthem to all things good and positive - oh and Queensland of course!" A hallmark of Sunshine State is the way GWR apply a wide stylistic palette to their songs.

From heartland rock to 80s alternative rock, Tom Petty to the Black Crowes, and a clear nod to home-state compatriots The Go-Betweens, Powderfinger and Halfway, the band absorb and acknowledge their influences, in the process creating their own musical identity at the junction of those twin pillars – country and rock.

EP122 - So What's Been Happening? - Big League

Big League have been serving as one of the finest purveyors of indie-rock on the scene these last few years. Created over loungeroom recordings by husband & wife team Travis & Marie, the endearing quartet have fast found a name for themselves not just at home, but abroad as well. 2022 was the band's busiest year, with tours at home and in the USA.

The band's second visit to the USA had them playing to packed rooms while enjoying regular airplay on college radio, ending with their second album A Symbol Like A Cloud appearing on the yearly Top 100 lists of several stations. 2023 began with Big League heading into the studio to begin recording album number three (due early 2024). Opting for a more typical studio environment, this record marks a departure from the home studio lo-fi sounds of their previous album, instead embracing the sonic textures the group can conjure from years of playing together, all the while maintaining the rock edge and catchy melodies that make the band special.

With their male/female vocals, Big League present uplifting alternative pop-laced guitar rock that is sure to warm the hearts of even the most jaded music fan. Through their distinctive language of distorted melodies, Big League spin tales that celebrate the often unappreciated details of suburban Australia. FOR FANS OF: Husker Du, Dinosaur Jr, The Clean, The Psychedelic Furs "This is raw and brutal indie at its most dynamic and invigorating, typical fare from a band that has built up an admirable reputation for visceral authentic rock." EP118 - So What's Been Happening? - Matt Malone

Matt Malone is a singer/songwriter born in the goldfields region of country Victoria. He has formed his musical vision out of the blues, country, folk and gospel traditions of the American, British and Australian past. Malone’s commanding baritone and masterfully crafted songs have been compared to the archetypal Johnny Cash, African-American gospel preachers such as Blind Willie Johnson, poetic folk troubadours including Leonard Cohen and tenebrous lyrical princes Nick Cave and Mark Lanegan.

The new album For The Term Of My Natural Life is without a doubt Malone's most personal, autobiographical and accomplished work to date.

A pandemic-induced relocation from Melbourne back to Ballarat provided a psycho-geographical location for Malone to focus on the completion of the writing of the album's songs and find a central thread for their subject matter. “I also took the opportunity to reassemble myself after years of drug / alcohol abuse and exploration through Thelema / occult practice by going back to my religious roots and developing a deeper communion with nature through long walks and prayerful meditation,” Malone reveals.

EP117 - So What's Been Happening? - Al Carr

MELBOURNE, VIC alt-country and Australian Americana artist Al Carr is proud to release his third album The Right Dereliction. Al Carr started playing in Sydney bands in the late 90s before a move to Melbourne in 2006 led to the start of a solo career that began in 2013 with his self-titled EP (featured guest appearances from Davey Lane (You Am I) and Louis Macklin (Jet), followed by the albums Gutter Truth (2017) and Empty Skies (2021) which included pedal steel by Shane Reilly (Lost Ragas).

Now Carr backs up those releases with his strongest set of recordings to date – the exquisite, diverse and poetic album The Right Dereliction. Written at home after a move to regional Victoria, these ten songs gestated for several years before Carr reunited with his band and long time collaborator Simon Maiden (guitar, keys), taking them into Aviary Studios in 2022 where Clinton Kraus (Something For Kate, The Peep Tempel, Mike Noga) produced and mixed the record.

FOR FANS OF: Tom Petty, The Band, The Replacements, Dan Brodie, Nick Barker

Mark Sinton is a Northern Irish born, Melbourne based singer songwriter with 25 years of experience fronting guitar driven bands in Ireland, Australia, and the U.K. Having toured and recorded internationally Mark returned permanently to Melbourne to set up home and commence a lengthy sabbatical from the industry.

Inspired by an unexpected trip to his hometown, Mark’s song writing was reignited, leading to his stellar 2022 album ‘Change to Something New’ which explores mortality, grief, anxiety, love and hope through impeccable songcraft.

Mark’s music draws comparisons to Bowie, Lennon, Todd Rundgren and early Billy Joel. His live show sees him shifting between piano and guitar to deliver his timeless songs, with pitch perfect singing and the comfortable stage banter of a Vegas pro. EP115 - So What's Been Happening? - Jamie Hutchings

NSW artist Jamie Hutchings (Bluebottle Kiss, Infinity Broke) releases his sixth solo studio album A New, ahead a run of national tour dates early in 2024. A prolifically creative musician, Jamie Hutchings has built a career in the Australian scene that stretches back to the early 1990s.

He first established himself as the cornerstone of noisy indie-rock auteurs Bluebottle Kiss before embarking on a solo career with the release of The Golden Coach in 2002. If that wasn't enough to satiate his musical curiosities, Hutchings also formed the band Infinity Broke, releasing the first of their three albums in 2014 and using the framework of the group to venture even further into angular guitar art rock, with a strong through-line of inventive and repetitive rhythms and percussion.

Earlier this year Hutchings released his most experimental solo album, Making Water, a collage of rhythm and noise, drone and abstraction that explored free jazz, Krautrock and the kind of terrain inhabited by The Necks and late period Talk Talk. As Hutchings tends to do, he has pivoted again stylistically, returning to a more traditional sounding solo album with A New.

EP109 - So What’s Been Happening? - Humble (Stephen Holmes)

Out of the disparate urges of youth and middle age, the Kiama NSW trio formed in March 2022. The result is primitive, literate yet defiant, lyrically abstract yet nostalgic, musically searching, “slouching without, frantic within.” Dad rock, if your Dad is Rob Zombie.

Humble combines the crashing classic rock drums of Ryan King (DE/4D, The Talkers, Dirty Headbangers), the confident and propulsive groove of bassist Darcy Wall (Kaleidoscope, Jayhawks) and the jangling, heartbreaker guitars and direct vocals of Stephen Holmes (DE/4D, Human Auto, Floating Axe Studio). The latter's voice channeling everyone from Modest Mouse's Isaac Brock to Stephen Malkmus and Pere Ubu's David Thomas.

The impressively diverse There's Still Time, released late in 2022, included three singles: ‘Sure Thing’ seethes with lusty, cosmic frustration, filtered through jerky post-punk and primitive rock 'n' roll dynamics. Second single ‘That Don’t Work’ threads the Smiths and the Byrds together with the indie hooks of NZ band Garageland and Madchester jangle folk, while on the album's third single, 'Wasted On Purpose', the song emerges from a dissonant sonic fog, an insistent kick drum driving the song onwards over a post-punk bass melody and Holmes' infectious Malkmus-esque vocal hooks. "An intriguing collection of refined chaos that is as utterly compelling as it is fun. Ranging from the raw delicacy of

The Go-Betweens to the swagger of the New York Dolls, the troubadour musings of Jonathan Richmond to the clattering post punk sounds of The Fall, the genetic influences are many and varied but the delivery is swaggering and assured. 8.3/10 - Backseat Mafia

EP104 - So What's Been Happening? - Arabella and the Heist

Loud, raw and gritty, Arabella and The Heist punch you in the face and then kiss you on the cheek to make it all better. Hot off the Melbourne rock scene, the four piece are a Melbourne-bred hard rock outfit that ooze rock and roll of the Queens of The Stone Age kind. The kind that makes you put on your favourite leather jacket and start smoking again. Stir this up in a boiling pot of Melbourne punk tradition a la Amyl and The Sniffers and you have the rawness and grit to accompany it. Just like a well rounded meal with your favourite hot sauce, Arabella and The Heist hits you hard but has enough sweetness to leave you coming back for more. Arabella and The Heist are a four-piece rock group fronted by the tenacious force of front-woman Holly Arabella. Joe Humphries provides the high fuzzed, often out-of-control guitar whilst Alex Brown (bass) and Ryan Jones (drums) ensure it all stays on track.

EP99 - So What's Been Happening? - Matt Ward

Adelaide alt-country singer/songwriter Matt Ward recently released his third single of the year, a heartfelt tribute to his family's favourite Australian rules team – Norwood Football Club. Matt draws on the rich history of uniquely Australian songwriting that successfully took elements of alt-country and folk music, bathed them in the landscape, big skies and red desert highways of this sunburnt country and created a sound that was poetic and highly evocative, countrified melodic rock. Think Paul Kelly, The Triffids and The Go-Betweens. Off the back of his 2019 debut #1 ARIA success with Heartland (with acclaimed producer Matt Fell), Ward's Texas-recorded album If I Was In Dallas Tonight (2021) strengthened his songwriting reputation, with Rhythms magazine calling it “world class”. Ward has backed up his superb releases, which included recordings with Kate Brianna and US outlaw country artist Bonnie Montgomery, with heavyweight performances as a headline artist at the 2021 Groundwater Music Festival, a showcase artist at Nashville's Bluebird Café (Americanafest 2019) and Australian Music Week, and gigs at high profile national venues such as The Barn Wombat Flat (2021). As well as being label boss for Heartland Music Australia (Amber Rae Slade, Nathan Seeckts, Harvey Russell), Ward is currently recording music with both The Rising Sons in Adelaide and a studio album with Matt Fell in Tasmania, with plans to release a new full-length album in 2024.

EP97 - So What's Been Happening? - Chris Carrapetta

Sydney, NSW alt-country and Australian Americana artist Chris Carrapetta proudly releases his most fully realised and personal album – Nothing Left To Lose. Musically Carrapetta draws on the rich history of folk rock and country music. Avoiding the cliches of commercial country music, he's found his home in the established yet still expanding alt-country and Australian Americana scene.

His songs are laden with melodic vocals, rich layers of keyboards and guitars that have the hooks of indie rock and the swagger and twang of Wilco and Jason Isbell with the smooth feel of Neil Young and Ryan Adams. Troubled times are documented across Nothing Left To Lose but ultimately Carrapetta has his heart set towards an optimistic new horizon on this world class collection of songs.

Now four albums deep into his solo career, he continues to refine and develop his craft of songwriting, arranging and playing, and on the new album Nambucca Fables he dives deep into highly personal material that will resonate on a deep humanistic and relatable level with his audience. Whether that’s those that have experienced loss and grief or those who need a gentle guide through the inevitable experiences we all must face.

"If Tom Waits, Elvis Costello and Jeff Tweedy were pushed out to sea in a rickety old boat they’d come up with something like this. ..a boisterous yet soulful musical journey worth the fare. You’ll be stomping and crying and laughing, and if you’re lucky to catch Moldre live, you’ll be doing all three with a whiskey in hand.” Timber & Steel

EP80 - So What's Been Happening? - Rodney 'BALLS' Grinter

SPECIAL GUEST - Former Melbourne Demon Defender Rod Grinter is most remembered for an incident early in the 1988 VFL season when he struck Footscray's Terry Wallace in the face with his forearm, where he received a six week suspension for 'bringing the game into disrepute' and finished the year in Melbourne's losing Grand Final side against Hawthorn. He was also suspended in 1990 for nine matches for eye-gouging and striking against Essendon at Windy Hill. Grinter was involved in another famous incident in the previous season's Preliminary Final against the same opponents. He was the man on the mark when Jim Stynes ran between him and Gary Buckenara which resulted in a free kick and goal to win after the siren from Buckenara.    What a moment in time.... After playing most of his career in defence, Grinter was moved into the forward line in 1993 and retired from AFL the following season. He played 134 games for Melbourne and kicked 57 goals. Rod has dedicated a large portion of his time post playing career to bonding the Demon's Past Players Group and we will discuss the current crop of Premiership Winning Demons and what the 2021 Premiership success has meant to the club after 57 years.    Some quotes from 1980... EP79 - So What's Been Happening? - Katie Bates

Melbourne Americana singer-songwriter Katie Bates has been performing live for over a decade. Obsessed and inspired by the music of the classic and alternative country artists from the 1960s and 70s. Katie’s songs brim with honesty and more than a hint of grunge and grit. She brings an attitude to the table that is seldom seen in the Americana/roots scene - a fire in the belly that simmers beneath a sweet surface of a gifted storyteller. Since immersing herself in the vibrant Melbourne alt-country/Americana scene, Katie has performed as a backing vocalist and occasional opening act for artists such as Lachlan Bryan and The Wildes, James Ellis and The Jealous Guys and Ben Mastwyk. She has also opened for the likes of Andrew Swift, Tracy McNeil and most recently touring the East Coast supporting American singer-songwriter Hannah Aldridge. Katie’s sound pays respect to the likes of Gillian Welch, Tom Petty, Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris but also leans heavily from Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Alanis Morissette and Audioslave.

MOZË, the ethereal self-produced singer/songwriter relocated from Wangaratta to Melbourne’s creative hub. Now she is set to release her second single, Ruse, via Squinked Records on November 26. After making waves in Melbourne's music scene with her debut single, MOZË proves this is just beginning. 'Ruse' is a perfect showcase for MOZË to re-enter our musical consciousness, pushing femme empowerment to the forefront.

This soulful performance sheds a light on the beauty of femininity. MOZË’s production style gives us a glimpse into the endless styles and genres that she finds influence in, blending RNB with a jazzy-fusion, gospel sound. MOZË has encapsulated her song writing and vocal abilities something both raw and emotional, yet unstoppable. Ruse encompasses MOZË’s experience through a parting friendship. With deep introspection and understanding, she found the courage to confide in herself, and manifest the hurt into creativity. Ruse feels utterly intimate and personal; yet it conveys a rich, exquisite and tender expression of love, loss and growth.

Melbourne cosmic-country-rocker BEN MASTWYK writes his songs on the move. Planes, trains, rivers and highways set the mood. “There’s something about the rhythm of the world rolling by that stimulate the process” he explains. With his seven-piece rhinestoned band THE MILLIONS, songs erupt into swaggering, psychedelic bar-room gems. As a teenage noise-rocker, Mastwyk's love of twang was instilled when he watched family members produce a country record, exposing him to artists such Cash, Kristopherson and Parsons, confirming his love of classic country music. After ceasing music to explore Fine Art, Mastwyk was thrust back into the country music scene when a borrowed guitar spawned a flood of songwriting. Twice nominated for Best Country Album (Music Victoria Awards), Mastwyk has received high nation rotation on ABC Radio and toured his songs around Australia, NZ and the USA. His third album, 2021's LIVIN ON GOLD STREET, debuted at #1 on the Australian Independent charts, #2 on ARIA Australian Country charts. “Mastwyk plunges headlong into Seventies country-soul glam with lashings of cosmic American pedal steel and psych-guitar glitz. Nick Barker has been a familiar painting hanging on the walls of the Australian music scene since the late 1980s. He left his suburban home at 17 and began his career as a bass player in Melbourne’s eclectic inner city post-punk scene, cutting his teeth in iconic venues like the Ballroom and the Prince of Wales with bands such as The Curse, Beach House and A Singing Dog, precursor to the now infamous Lubricated Goat. The most notable of these was The Wreckery, with whom he played on five albums. In 1988, Nick’s new band, Nick Barker and the Reptiles, began playing bars around town, sparking interest from The White Label. They had their first break through with the Chris Bailey-produced single, ‘Another Me’, followed by four crazy years of booze-soaked pub rock. The Reptiles released two albums: ‘Goin’ to Pieces’ in 1989, which included the hit cover version of Steve Harley’s ‘Make Me Smile’ and ‘After the Show’ in 1991, recorded in Melbourne and Memphis, and produced by Joe Hardy (ZZ Top, Georgia Satellites, Steve Earle). Sadly, The Reptiles fell apart in 1993 after the release of ‘Loose’, an EP that gave an insight into the band’s true potential. A tireless songwriter and performer, Nick has toured the UK, Europe, North and South America and Asia. He’s written songs with the likes of Tim Rogers, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes, Earl Slick, Mick Thomas and Felicity Urquhart - just to name a few. Nick has seen the Australian music industry spin, chase its tail, die, resurrect and do it all over again. Thirty-five years later, he’s still here and no one is more surprised than him.
