In this installment of the Book Nook book club, we discuss "The Summer I Turned Pretty" by Jenny Han. Karina, Lily, and Helena discuss the complex relationships at the center of the story, whether it be a romantic one between Belly and one of the boys or a platonic one between Laurel and Susannah. Join us for our discussion about tropes in modern teen media, how social elements play into one's perception of their own life, and which of the boys we like best. Additionally, we discuss the recent Amazon Prime TV show adaptation as well as its ridiculously expensive soundtrack.
In this installment of the Book Nook book club, we discuss "My Year of Rest and Relaxation" by Ottessa Moshfegh. Lily and Karina are joined by a special guest and Harry Styles enthusiast, Ava, as well as Ava's dog, Murphy, and Lily's dog, Bowie. Join us for our discussion about the book, its impact on social media, and the "women can be assholes too" trope.
Side note: While this episode is really long, there are a lot of things we didn't touch on (the narrator's job at an art gallery, the narrator's relationship with Trevor, the narrator's startlingly high debt at the bodega by her apartment, etc.) and we highly encourage that you also read a synopsis of the book and read it if you want to understand the whole story.
