When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when you're feeling sad. Just listen to SEFS and then you won't feel so bad.
Again, this is NOT a Christmas episode, but we do have a lovely gift for you this holiday season: "a few of our favorite things." Josh and Jacob took completely different approaches and came up with a wild mix of music for you to enjoy as you count down to the new year. Happy Holidays to all of our great listeners! It's "Somebody Else's Favorite Things!"
Episode 27: Jingle Bell "Rock" - NOTE: This is NOT a Christmas Episode. Really, it isn't. Even though it will seem like it 10 minutes in, we promise it most certainly is not. Courage, listeners. Anyway, with Jacob off foraging for sustenance and fighting for his country (Texas) against the abominable snow man in the Icelandic hinterlands, hosting duties fell to Josh and Joel this week - and these two had bells jingling in their heads. Perhaps already driven mad by the incessant, ubiquitous playing of "All I Want for Christmas is You," which began back in late August, or possibly already nearing hibernation due to having started eggnog intake back around Thanksgiving, your fearless leaders for the week took off aimlessly on their own quest. Their mission? Locating the elusive sleigh bell in its unnatural habitat: Non-Christmas songs. They were not prepared for what they found: a daring and eclectic mix of songs, decades and genres that jingle all the way. Well, some of them only jingle at the end of the song. You get the idea. "It's a bold move, Cotton, Let's see if they can pull it off." Anyway, hurry back Jacob, we are running low on supplies (and ideas). It's "Somebody Else's Favorite Jingle Bell 'Rock' Songs!"
This week Josh, Jacob and Joel are joined by a very special guest in Le Studio all the way from Vancouver BC. Thanksgiving week brought Josh’s brother Ben to town, so we decided this would require a discussion of songs from around the globe. We hope you enjoy our selections exclusively from international artists as much as we enjoyed hearing Ben’s unique Texan-Canadian accent. Here’s our colourful look at songs with an intercontinental flavour. It’s “Somebody Else’s Favorite International Songs!”
Episode 25: We Don't Need No Stinkin Lyrics!
From early rock to surf music, crossover to jam bands, and country to funk, artists have been trying their hand at composing compelling instrumentals throughout popular music history. This week we take a look at just what can make a song with no lyrics memorable while exploring a wide selection of styles and examples. Kick up your heels and groove along with us - It’s “Somebody Else’s Favorite Instrumentals!”
Episode 24: Acoustic Guitar Songs The acoustic guitar is the foundation of popular music. But sometimes, artists utilize this common instrument in such a way at as to reinvent it and create a revolutionary sound experience. This week, Josh and Jacob are once again joined by Joel (his 9th appearance) to take a look at some of their favorite uses of the acoustic guitar. Interesting and unique players have taken this common instrument and provided us with some fantastic performances. These are some of our favorites. It’s “Somebody Else’s Favorite Acoustic Guitar Songs!”
Episode 23: Why YOU Should Love Jesse Dayton
From keeping a “solid country gold” style alive to merging the spirit of classic country with punk and rockabilly, Austin’s Jesse Dayton has been churning out intriguing records for over 25 years.
