Is a dancer more than an object that moves and entertains? Should our dances not be an expression of a movement: be it aesthetic, musical, social, or political? Are we just missionaries and torchbearers of tradition or are we trailblazers? As a South Asian dancer living in the West, I have often grappled with the idea of carrying on the tradition while also reaching a wider audience who are after all my friends, neighbours, and fellow citizens. So how do we build those connections when Eastern dance traditions are being performed in a Westernized society?Come join us in the 20-minute podcast series Movement Beyond Dance where we discuss about expanding access and awareness about the Indian classical dance - Bharatanatyam, especially in the West.
