Hey there, my dear friends and listeners! I've been on quite the unexpected journey, stretching what was meant to be a short break into an extended hiatus that took me off the grid and gave me a fresh perspective. Despite toting my podcast gear, I relished a pause from the usual recording routine, allowing me to recharge and reflect. That said, I wasn't entirely off the radar; I managed to share a delightful episode featuring the ever-insightful Sophie, who offered her gems of wisdom, a conversation that shouldn't be missed.

The big news is the launch of our dedicated YouTube channel, Backseat Positivity, which marks a new chapter for our podcast adventures. It's a hive of activity where our community can gather, and I'm deep in the throes of moving episodes over to this fresh space – all while keeping things delightfully unpolished, as you've come to love. The behind-the-scenes efforts are hefty, and I'm all about preserving sanity over sticking to an unyielding schedule. So I'm plotting a grand return around the end of June or July, armed with episodes that promise to make the wait utterly worthwhile. Stick around, because we're about to get into some really good stuff together with our next batch of conversations.

Who said turning your living room into a sweltering hot yoga studio was a good idea? Certainly not me, after my side-splitting and sweat-inducing debacle that takes center stage in today's episode. It's Dawn here, spilling the beans on my valiant but vain attempt to save a few bucks and the precious minutes I spent getting to my local hot pod yoga class. Brace yourselves for a roller coaster of DIY disasters and the stark realization that sometimes, convenience isn't king. I'll regale you with the saga of my living room turned sauna and how a fan heater, a yoga mat, and great intentions weren't quite enough to rival the structured discipline of a proper studio setting.

Amid the laughs, I've also got some pearls of wisdom to share on smoothing out the rough edges of our day-to-day lives to boost productivity. No guests joining me today, just a hearty dose of reality as I dissect the friction points that can chip away at our well-being and how a dedicated space for our endeavors can make all the difference. Tune in for a candid reflection on the social dynamics of group classes versus the solitude of home practice, the quirks of setting up (and tearing down) a would-be yoga space, and the technical snafus that even I can't always dodge. Whenever I strap on my heart rate monitor, I'm struck by a mix of anticipation and dread: will today's data push me to new heights, or will it spiral me into worry? Our journey through the complex relationship with wearables touches on this paradox. With stories from the trenches of my medical practice, I peel back the curtain on how these devices shape our wellness narratives, for better or worse. We navigate the fine line between staying informed and tumbling into the rabbit hole of health anxiety, and I'll share why I've chosen to buckle on my my zone belt for certain pursuits, but steer clear of the full-time digital tether of others.

It's an everyday conundrum: how do we keep moving in a world that often seems designed to keep us seated? My candid conversation tackles the reality of those much-touted step goals and the truth that they're not the be-all and end-all of an active lifestyle. I discuss the double-edged sword of fitness trackers, weighing their benefits in providing vital health insights against the potential stress of incessant digital prodding. Heart rate monitors come under the spotlight too—how do they guide our workouts without dictating them? Join me as I advocate for a minimalist approach that prizes listening to our bodies over obsessing over the numbers.

As we wrap up, I invite you to consider a mindful stance towards wearable fitness technology. The gamification of fitness and the lure of unnecessary high-tech gadgets are fodder for a lively critique, as I urge the importance of fostering a connection with our innate physical intuition. We take a step back to appreciate the joy of movement, untainted by the need to constantly measure and compare. It's a reflection on how we balance the metrics with the pleasure of exercise, reminding us that the ultimate goal is to find a harmony that aligns with our personal health journey. So, until next time, remember to tune in to your body, find joy in your workouts, and strike that blissful balance.

Have you ever tried to "sweat it out" when you're feeling under the weather, convinced that a good sauna session or some intense exercise was the key to beating a cold? Join me as I debunk this health myth with insights from my emergency department experiences, revealing why this well-intentioned advice may not be the panacea we've been led to believe. We unravel the truth behind our body's fever response and how, despite popular belief, sweat isn't the hero in our battle against illness—it's the heat response that takes the lead.

There's a certain allure to the idea of detoxifying through sweating it out in a hot yoga class or a sauna, especially after indulging in a night out. As a hot yoga enthusiast myself, I uncover the real effects of these practices on our health while paying homage to the true champions of detoxification: our liver and kidneys. We also take a fascinating detour through the wonders of human anatomy, celebrating the astonishingly intricate work our organs perform that far surpasses the capabilities of sweat.

As we wrap up this enlightening session, my devoted doctor friend and I share heartening stories and our gratitude for the journey towards positivity we're on together. We highlight the importance of hydration and discuss the actual benefits of sweating, like skin exfoliation and mucus clearance, that do have their place in maintaining our well-being. So before you roll out that yoga mat or step into the steam, tune in and let's uncover the sweat-soaked truths together. Goodbye for now, and remember to hydrate, rate, and join us again for more invigorating discussions!

I'm taking you with me—from the lush Indonesian jungles to the bustling markets of Thailand—while sharing nuggets of wisdom on how to stay mentally healthy when the road gets lonely or overwhelming.

Travel is as much about the places you see as the people you meet. Join us as I open up about an encounter with a drunk gym-goer named James, whose misguided compliments led to an unexpected journey of self-reflection. As we navigate through this personal story, we dissect the confounding aftermath of being objectified, the struggle with our self-perception on off-days, and how such experiences can sometimes deepen our insecurities.

Confronting unwanted attention is never easy, especially when it crosses the lines of propriety—imagine fending off a married man, inebriated, and making inappropriate comments about his family... and his dog. I'll admit, the first time I laid eyes on a Lion's Mane mushroom, I couldn't help but chuckle – it looked like a cross between a shaggy dog and a piece of coral reef! But little did I know, this 'hairy cauliflower' would soon become a staple in my quest for wellness. On today's episode, we dig into the world of Lion's Mane mushrooms, their surge in popularity in the Western diet, and how they've gone from being an ancient Chinese medicinal secret to a modern-day superfood. We'll also chat about the ease of adding Lion's Mane to your diet and even growing it yourself. It's not just a foodie adventure; it's a glimpse into how the mundane lives of our wild friends might just hold the secret to our next health craze.

Wrapping things up, we step back to appreciate the natural roots of some of our most trusted medications – did you know aspirin came from a tree? Discover the surprising natural sources of common drugs and ponder the promising therapeutic effects of Lion's Mane mushrooms on mental sharpness and stress relief. And because we love a good chuckle, we'll wrap up with a light-hearted analysis of scientific studies – one involving menopausal women, cookies, and our furry fungal friend. Embark on a whimsical journey through the verdant valleys of matcha, where the traditional Japanese tea takes center stage over your typical cup of joe. As your guide, I’m spilling the tea on everything from its rich, ancient roots to the modern-day buzz it's stirring up in the beverage world. You’ll get an insider's look at how this "magic green swamp juice" is meticulously crafted from the Camellia sinensis plant, and I’ll even share tales of its zen-inducing powers that keep you calmly alert without the coffee jitters. And if you're tickled by tidbits of royal intrigue, you'll be delighted by how my current obsession with "The Crown" has brewed up unexpected connections to our favorite leafy concoction.

If you're me and my boyfriend Tom, you hightail it to Tenerife for an unexpected medieval adventure, complete with jousting knights and a dinner show that's out of this century! Our recent escapade turned into a laugh-filled episode as we navigated the twists of tourist life, from battling Siri's misguided directions to joining forces with fellow diners in a hilarious spectacle reminiscent of the dark ages—minus the actual peril, of course.

Strap in for a rollicking recount of how we ended up eating like kings and queens (if kings and queens had a penchant for bread rolls and chicken) in a dimly lit hall that felt straight out of Game of Thrones. We dish on everything from the chuckle-worthy mishaps with uncooperative horses to an audience member's untimely bout of illness that threw us yet another curveball. It's a tale of culture, cuisine, and the camaraderie that only comes from shared, unexpected moments of merriment and mayhem. Join me on a personal health odyssey as I share my firsthand experiences with these wellness trends and more, including my candid thoughts on aging gracefully without Botox, and the quest for expressiveness amidst a world smitten with frozen foreheads.

Taking a left turn into the realm of luxury quirks and practical comfort, I muse on sleep tourism, the sometimes puzzling allure of gold leaf face masks, and the simple joys of a budget hotel stay. Ever wonder if that high-priced matcha with Lion's Mane is a wellness game-changer or just a trendy way to drain your wallet? Well, I've put it to the test, and you won't believe the revelations I've uncovered. As you join me, Dawn, on my latest escapade through the landscape of wellness fads, I'll spill the tea on whether these concoctions truly deserve a spot in our daily rituals or if we're simply complicating our green tea for no good reason. Then there's hot yoga, the workout that's got everyone sweating in more ways than one. I'm on the fence, ready to take the plunge into a sea of heat and stretchy pants, but not without first side-eyeing the over-the-top marketing tactics—ever seen a yoga class that resembles a steamy music video?

It doesn't stop at yoga mats and exotic herbal blends; the culinary world's got me raising an eyebrow with a vegan Maltesers pasta. Yes, you heard that right, and I'm just as curious as you are to find out if it's a catastrophe or a stroke of plant-based genius. Meal planners are also on my radar, claiming to be the solution to my seasonal weight woes with their curated shopping lists and celebrity glow—but can they truly outshine a self-crafted grocery run? Meanwhile, I'm wading into the discourse on inclusive fashion, particularly when it comes to the quest for wide-fit shoes. After a ski trip that was more about battling boots than enjoying the slopes, I'm advocating comfort without compromise. So buckle up (or should I say lace up?), and let's tackle these trends with a healthy dose of reality and perhaps a few laughs along the way.

Peeling off a sports bra that felt like a torture device, I couldn't help but ponder the love-hate relationship we have with bras and how this seemingly simple garment carries a weight of history and myth. Tune in as I share anecdotes of personal struggle with uncomfortably tight straps and the quest for a bra that doesn't feel like a medieval corset, prompting us to question why we conform to these constraining standards. We journey from the restrictive corsets of yesteryears to today's movement of embracing our natural form, unpacking the myths that have long dictated how we support our bodies. Our conversation unravels whether bras truly prevent sagging and how societal pressures sculpt our perceptions and choices, daring to ask: could ditching the bra be the healthier option?

As we discuss the myriad workplace woes from underboob sweat to the dreaded nipple outlines, we consider a range of solutions, from talcum powder to high-tech products promising to solve every body-related issue under the sun. We'll examine how the 'Free the Nipple' movement and broader cultural shifts are challenging the necessity of bras, empowering us to prioritize comfort and personal freedom over outdated norms. Join us in this candid conversation that not only explores the practical aspects of bra-wearing but also invites you to question the very fabric of societal expectations stitched into our undergarments. Climbing out of the trenches of financial hardship, I've found myself stumbling into the curious world of 'bed rotting,' a modern twist on rest and recuperation that can blur lines between comfort and productivity. Join me as I unwrap how this trend plays into the ever-evolving landscape of work and leisure, and how figures like Emma Chamberlain have normalized the act of finding refuge in our beds. From the impact of mental health to the subtle art of balancing shared spaces, this episode peels back the layers of what it means to find solace under the duvet.

Dressed in my comfiest loungewear, I confessed to a recent 'sofa day' where Netflix was my only companion, sparking a conversation on the psychological influences of media consumption. Whether it's the gritty reality of 'Skins' reflecting our own mental battlegrounds or the healing touch of pets, this episode is a candid exploration of the pleasures and pitfalls of choosing to stay put.

Wrapping things up on a light-hearted note, we'll navigate the terrain of post-party recovery tactics, weighing the joy of fresh air against the blissful ignorance of a nap. Navigating the stormy seas of loss, I've come to realize that each wave of grief brings its own lessons. Our latest episode is a tender journey through the heartache of losing friends and mentors, as I open up about the raw edges of mourning a friend's sudden departure. Through tears and laughter, I've clung to gallows humor as a life raft, finding solace in the shared understanding of colleagues and the power of reflection. It's a personal exploration of the different textures of loss I've experienced – from the harrowing days following a teenage friend's suicide to the piercing void left by the passing of a fellow doctor.

As we traverse the landscape of sorrow, we find ourselves at the intersection of vulnerability and the stark realization of our own mortality, especially poignant within the medical community. The shattering loss of my stepdad and a colleague serves as a stark reminder that life's final curtain can fall unexpectedly, even for those who spend their days postponing it for others. The episode is a heartfelt admittance of the fears that accompany turning thirty, with its lurking specters of cancer and other health concerns, and a tribute to those whose lives have left indelible marks on our own.

Yet, amidst the darkness, there's an awakening—a beacon calling us to seize the day and chart a course for a life filled with purpose and joy. I share my newfound zest for adventures like embracing van life's minimalist ethos and the deliberate pursuit of financial freedom to fuel my wanderlust. Our medical world is extremely algorithmic and very systematic and very guideline based. And it's very hard to be a creative soul, a creative being within this world as a doctor, and in other professions as well.

As a doctor, I think creative outlets are harder to find however. So I'm going to talk today about why creativity is important as a doctor, because you know, you might just think, well, I am an algorithmic Doctor robot, I do procedures, I signed consent form, I do discharge summary in algorithmic way I do history of presenting complaint, past medical history, drug allergies, medications, etc, etc. And then where does creativity come into that?

So we're gonna be talking about:
- Why is creativity as a doctor important?
- Why there is no creativity in medicine
- The differences between being a creative person as a doctor and being a content creator as a doctor
- How to be a more creative doctor inside work and outside work.
- What's the most creative medical specialty.

I have this feeling extremely regularly, much more regularly than I'd like where I feel like I'm just sitting around and waiting for something to happen.

Now, this often occurs when I've got something in the afternoon or in the evening in particular. And basically what happens is, I don't get anything done. And I sit there, and I wait. And it's not like a happy wait. I'm not waiting happily.

It's a wait where I feel really shit and anxious about it, I get nothing done. And then I feel guilty and rubbish about my life. But it's very unsettling. And today, I want to cover how to get over waiting mode.

As a doctor, I see a lot of health anxiety, and weirdly in younger people more than older people.

So, as I'm going through my existential crisis podcast series at the moment, I noticed that there was one existential crisis that I was yet to cover.

And that is related to physical health, illness, death, etc.

I thought, what better to cover in that one than health anxiety with a kind of relation to existential crises?

If you go back 10 years, who had a diagnosis of ADHD, not many people. But seemingly, it's seemingly becoming more and more common.

And I'm like, as the DSM five, that manual that tells us how many mental health diseases we can possibly have gets bigger and bigger and bigger, I wonder are we over-diagnosing lots of mental health problems.

Because the thing with mental health problems, and actually with lots of physical health problems is that they're vague. There's grey, there's black, there's white, there's grey again.

And it just means that everybody could have a mental disorder, if you put them on that scale. And I just think, why are we over diagnosing everybody?

Today we are talking about psychological safety. Basically, who else is scared of just saying something wrong saying the wrong thing, and being chastised for it.

This has become increasingly common over the past few years. And I haven't really felt comfortable talking about it until now, which is kind of ironic, because that's the whole point of the podcast is that we're scared of saying our thoughts.

I have I just like to put a little disclaimer out there. Okay. I have absolutely zero animosity towards gay people, trans people, like literally any subsection of society that you can think of minority.  I have absolutely no issues, right. And that's what I want to get across today is that I have no issues. I don't want people to be like, Oh my gosh, she's so racist, because that's kind of the point. That's where I'm gonna get to today.

Is TikTok going for good? So today we're talking about my social media guilt, not guilt, because I use it frequently, but guilt because I post on it.  And we're going to talk about the potential banning of TikTok and how people are going to feel about that. What do I think the landscape of social media looks like for the future?

Hi, guys. Welcome back to my podcast, Backseat Positivity. I'm Dawn. I'm a doctor. Let that sink in. And I discuss literally lots of random shit. But we have a good time also doing it. We turn things in a positive way. We discuss meanings of life and existential things and all sorts, really, but mainly positive stuff.

The highlights of the episode:
Rolling the rollercoaster of emotions. The scariest cup you’ve ever seen. The death trap of existentialism and death. People just want to be cheap legends. Lack of money and the lack of purpose. How to deal with an existential crisis. How to find your purpose.

In general, I'm feeling like my life is a bit pointless. I think this is a feeling that a lot of people get. And it's a common human feeling. It's a common human issue. And that is the issue of existentialism... having an existential crisis.

Today sounds less positive. I'm sorry. But I always twist it in a good way, like that. Twisting.

Hi guys, welcome back to my podcast back seat positivity.

I am Dawn, I'm a doctor, and I discuss things, all things positive and happy.

Today, I'm talking about what I learned from being a doctor, we're going to be talking about fun things, controversial things and stories of what I've been through.

You know, some of these things are a little bit intimate, some of them are a little bit rude. And some of them are, as in rude as naughty.

Some of them are a little bit sensitive. So I would listen with caution. Expect I'll give you a little warning before some of them. I do talk about death and dying and serious illnesses. So if that's something that's going to bother you, then I'll warn you beforehand, but maybe just skip to the next chapter.

Hi guys, welcome back to my podcast. I am Dawn, I'm a doctor and I have an I'm still currently going through an episode of burnout. Why does it keep happening?

Well, I'm gonna tell you why. And the thing is, you are probably burnt out. Maybe you're not, but you probably suffer from burnout in the past, and not realised it or not done anything about it. And there is a very easy explanation for that.

Today we're talking about burnout versus depression, because I think that's a very important distinction to make. Causes of burnout, how to get over burnout, and how to stop it from happening in the future.

If you're new here, by the way, we discuss all things positive lifestyle, happiness, you know, the good stuff, get your daily dose of positivity, rather than scrolling and listening to shit.

I'm Dawn, I'm a doctor, and I am the host of this fun train. So today, we are talking about a recent thing that has happened to me. And that is why I'm obsessively grateful for my sofa.

You might think, Dawn, how did you get to this conclusion? Well, it, it's been a turbulent time, if you follow my YouTube channel, you might have noticed my recent escapades with my living room. But if you haven't, don't worry, I'll be discussing it. And we'll be getting into what happened. With my living room.

We'll also just be generally talking about gratitude. It's been in the media a lot, especially to do with like mindfulness and things. So I in the past very much struggled with gratitude. It's very hard to do. But there's a trick that I have developed recently, I've been like, oh my god, now I'm so grateful for things.

So we're going to be doing gratitude, mindfulness, talking about the mindfulness journey. My sofa story, another story after that, but that's a secret story. And then we're gonna be talking about things that I'm grateful for. Some of them are concrete, some of them are abstract. So stick around.

So today we're doing love lessons from pop culture, which is basically what can movies and TV shows teach us about romantic relationships, I guess maybe even relationships in general. Today, I'm organized I have water. I have done my nose spray, which is a kind of TMI gross addition to the information that you'd probably didn't need. But, uh, last last time, I felt a bit a little bit sniffy. So I didn't think you needed to hear that again. So there it is. That's my water. All right. We've got a few sections, in fact, quite a lot. What is it, we've got, we've got like, eight points. So it's time to get into it.

Here's the itinerary!

  1. Introduction: Why Pop Culture Matters in Our Relationships.
  2. The Power of Persistence: Lessons from the Grand Romantic Gesture.
  3. The Importance of Communication: How Rom-Coms Get It Right (and Wrong).
  4. Love at First Sight: Separating Fiction from Reality.
  5. The Art of Flirting: What We Can Learn from Rom-Com Banter.
  6. The Friendzone: How Pop Culture Perpetuates Toxic Relationship Dynamics
  7. Forbidden Love: The Allure (and Danger) of Taboo Relationships.
  8. Unconventional Love Stories: Expanding Our Idea of What Love Can Look Like.

Enjoy! and remember to share with friends, family and give it a review if you liked it :)

This is all about the relationship test that people can predict whether you're together in five years now it's it's less of a test, like you're not doing like a challenge or a quiz or something.

Basically, these researchers could watch you in a 15 minute conversation with your other half, and predict with 90% accuracy, whether you'd be together in five years.

My podcast is having an upheaval. I'm taking the leap (slightly prematurely) to go solely into content creation and continuing with my medical content doesn't make sense/isn't working as well as I'd hoped.

I've got a lot to say, so I want to keep on podcasting, and bringing guests on, especially to bring this podcast to the next level for you guys!

But there's a barrier, and it's financial. If any of you supporters could help with a monthly Patreon subscription I'd be ever so grateful. Creating content isn't free but I really want to commit myself to bringing as much as I can to you guys and with great value.

I'm not asking for a wage or profit, just that you help me through this transition <3 Much love xoxo

As someone who have struggled with mental health and depression throughout my life, lately, I’m feeling mindful and clam. I have been on these meditation apps and they have really helped me tone down my overactive negative thoughts and I am so happy that it is troubling me.

I have been thinking about the reasons of not being happy and the things that are negatively bringing me down. My upbringing has been one of the factor and the people who are just negatively around you. I’ve been clearing the mess at my house and de-cluttering and it has helped me clear my mind up.

Buying just one set of plants at one time instead of hundreds has taken off a really big burden off my head. I went to a 2 days remote medicine course and I think I have cracked the trick to be happy.

Death is a curious thing. We all know that our time in this world is limited, and that eventually all of us will end up underneath some sheet, never to wake up. And yet it is always a surprise when it happens to someone we know.

Today, I will share my first experience with dead people. Death is a part of doctors life. You end up dealing with dead people at least once if your working in hospital and even during my medical school years, I didn’t know how to handle seeing dead people. My premedical experiences with dead people were very rare and dealing with death as a medical student wasn’t something I thought about.
Here are some of those experiences.

I wake up with a good attitude every day. Then idiots happen. The Worst Consultant!

I started a new job recently and I had to deal with this condescending consultant who just made my job so harder and he was there for just 2 weeks. We were working in this horrible ward which was a total disaster.

His arrogance and total lack of sympathy got on my nerves everyday and he made me think what does it actually take to become a good consultant and definitely wasn’t one.

Have no fear of perfection - you'll never reach it!

Have you ever felt the urge of doing everything perfect? Worrying about every tiny detail and trying to fix everything.

In this podcast, I would tell you about how I ended up being a perfectionist and how it affected me and the choices I made (both positively and negatively) and how it feels it to be a perfectionist.

From becoming getting into med school to becoming a doctor, being a perfectionist has helped me get where I am today. But it comes at a cost and that’s what I’ll be talking about today.

These past 8 months have been a rollercoaster ride and after setting up my own indoor plant business and creating tons of social media content, I am back on my podcast and this time I’m here to stay.

It’s been a real struggle but now things have finally started to ease up a little.

Bored of clinical medicine? I know I am...

I could tangibly feel my creativity was being stunted by the algorithmic ways of clinical medicine. Which is why I took my opportunity during the first lockdown, to start my content creating journey.

It's taken me a long time to figure out how to get started. And trust me, I've learnt from my mistakes. So I'm here to impart my knowledge to you, so all of the information you need is here, in one place.
