If you work in a retail shop, or in a busy warehouse, chances are, there's internal, two way communications taking place. Odds are, that communication is being done through the use of a walkie talkie, or something similar to that. Even though walkie talkies have been used for decades, there are some downsides to using them. Among them include their single purpose design. They're not designed, for example, to be used with phone communications, only direct, two way communications.

The other thing is they can be cumbersome to pack around. Some walkie talkies are heavy, and they can be misplaced easily. Rather than lugging a walkie talkie around, you can replace that with a tastefully designed, lightweight, great sounding headset.

The Jabra Perform 45 weighs about the same as half the weight of a typical household lightbulb. Or, the same as about three tablespoons of your favorite morning coffee. When you look at it in those terms, you have to agree, that's light, and being lightweight means a lot when it comes to wearing a headset.

You can not only keep in touch with your coworkers at the press of a button, but you can walk and talk up to 300 feet. Other Bluetooth headsets stop at a maximum distance of 100 feet. More range means a wider footprint for you to move around your workspace.

If you don't use two way communicatins, you can download the Jabra Direct software and the walkie button can be repurposed for other commonly used features such as speed dial, mute and more.

We tested the microphone for voice sound quality, and noise reduction. It excelled in both areas. We tested its ability to remove noise against the sounds of:

• Office noise
• Dogs barking
• Babies crying
• And our personal favorite, the noisy Vitamix blender test

Jabra states that the Perform 45 removes up to 80% of background noise. Based on our tests, I'd agree. It did a great job to remove all the different noises we threw at it.

Noise reduction aside, it also sounded very crisp, clear and professional. The microphone raises up to mute when you're on a call, and it turns off coworker two way chatter when you're needing to help someone face-to-face, which Jabra calls Face2Face mode.

In terms of talk time, you get 8 hours of battery life when using the Perform 45 for business call, and up to 20 hours for your two way communications. Recharging the battery takes about 140 minutes.

First, these earbuds sound very good. Good enough to use on business calls? In my opinion, they do. As good as a typical boom microphone headset? Well, I'm not going that far, but as earbuds go, these are top notch.

The Evolve2 earbuds give you get 8 hours of talk time, and with the portable charger, that talk time extends to 33 hours. You can use both earbuds, or just the right or left. And, when one earbud is idle, it can get recharged, and later swapped out with the one in use, which gives you unlimited talk time.

Then there's the question that haunts all earbuds; background noise reduction. So how do these earbuds do to remove noise? The simple answer is not that great. We tested them against the sounds of office noise, dogs barking, babies crying, and of course our signature blender test. Basicallly, it didn't reduce any of it. But to be fair, Jabra never designed these earbuds to be noise killers. So, if these earbuds capture your interest, keep in mind the environment they'll be used in.

Active Noise Cancellation (or ANC for short), and HearThrough are both standard features on these earbuds. These features aren't commonly found on earbuds, so it's nice they're included.

ANC allows the earbud wearer to not be distracted by room noise because there's a button to help surpress it. You stay focused, not distracted, and more productive.

Microphones. The Evolve2 65 has three digital MEMS noise canceling mics, whereas the 75 has 8 (4 digital, 4 analog). Four of the mics are used for the Active Noise Cancelation feature, and HearThrough that's found on the Evolve2 75, but not on the 65. The bottom line when it comes to mics though is sound quality; how they sound, and how well they reduce unwanted noise. Sound quality is subjective, but I prefer the sound and noise reduction on the Evolve2 65.

ANC/HearThrough. These are features found on the 75, and not on the 65. Active noise cancelation allows the person wearing the headset to not be distracted by background noise. ANC is an "anti-noise" feature that allows you to stay focused. HearThrough lets you keep the headset on when you want to have a face to face conversation. No need to take it off.

Speakers. Both headsets share the same 40mm speakers. For business grade headsets, they both sound very good. Not Bose or Sony level, but superb for a business oriented headset.

Wireless range. Both headsets are rated up to 30 meters/100 feet. Standard for Bluetooth headsetes these days.

Weight. The mono 65 is in the 3 ounce category, whereas the duo headsets (65 & 75) are in the 6. Standard weight for these kinds of headsets.

This new Jabra software, called Engage Ai, is software that monitors conversations for the tone being used. It also is able to monitor the pace of a call, its length, and it even tracks the frequency of interruptions. All these things are designed to provide feedback to the Agent, and to Management so that corrective action can be taken.

The Agent has a dashboard, and they can select their own Avatar. When on a call, the Agent will see their Avatar, and in the same area, the Agent will see their numeric score which is based on their tone of voice. An unhappy looking Avatar for example, follows a low score. As the tone of voice improves, the facial expressions of the Avatar improves too.

The customer is also monitored for tone of voice which is a reaction to the kind of tone they're hearing from the Agent. Information on the customers experience is helpful to Management to see where training is required for example.

You can use this headset with most of the leading contact center, and UC platforms, and you can use it with any brand of wired or wireless headset. So how do these three headsets compare? Let's take a quick look.

Wireless range. All three models are rated up to 100 feet. This is pretty standard among Bluetooth headsets.

Battery life. The Evolve2 65, and 85 models offer uup to 37 hours of battery life, whereas the Evolve 75 gives you up to 18. No doubt the newer models are benefiting from advances in battery technology.

Weight. The Evolve2 65 weighs 6.2 ounces as does the Evolve 75. But, the Evolve2 85 hasn't been dieting lately because it tips the scales at 10 ounces. That's considered heavy by headset standards. Though advances in headset design does allow heavier headsets to feel lighter.

Busy light. All three have busy lights, but the 65, and 85 models have lights that can be seen from any viewing angle. That gives them an advantage of the 75.

Ear speakers. All three use 40mm ear speakers. This could mean they all sound pretty much the same, and they might. But, sound quality is subjective so when listening to all three you could find that you have a preference for one over the others.

Active Noise Cancellation. This is a relatively new business headset feature, and it's designed to give the headset wearer the ability to reduce ambient room noise. The Evolve2 65 doesn't have this feature, though the Evolve 75, and Evolve2 85 do. The Evolve2 75 is the first model up the line that offers it.

Bluetooth version. The Evolve 75 uses Bluetooth version 4.2, whereas the Evolve2 65 and 85 use version 5.0. 5.0 is designed to provide faster data transmission speeds, longer wireless range, and lower power consumption.

Microphone. The Evolve2 65 uses a 3 MEMS mic array that's noise canceling. The Evolve 75 uses a noise canceling uni-directional mic, and the Evolve2 85 uses a whopping 10 MEMS digital noise canceling mic array. And while on that particular mic, it can be swung upwards, and out of site where it stores away in the body of the ear speaker housing. When you pull it down, it unmutes.
Connectivity. All three connect to computers and mobile devices, and they all come with USB adapters (dongles), and allow for connecting up to 8 devices.

Color choice. The Evolve2 65, and the Evolve2 85 allow you to choose between black, and beigs where the Evolve 75 comes in one color only, black. So, if you want to express your individuality or non comformist tendencies, then the 65 or 85 could be a great choice.

You know, sidetone is one of those headset features that really never gets talked about. In fact, most people really don't know what it is. But the truth of the matter is sidetone plays an important role in allowing us to have a natural sounding, free flowing conversation. And without a certain amount of sidetone, you won't be liking life when on calls.

So a good starting point is to define what sidetone is.

Sidetone is the sound of your voice that's picked up by a microphone, and redirected to the ear speakers. When this happens, it allows you to hear your voice, so you can regulate it when talking to others.

When you can't hear yourself talk, it leaves you uncertain as to the audio level to talk at. You'll probably end up talking louder than necessary because you simply can't guage how loud to talk.

This is where sidetone plays its important role. It gives you instant feedback as to how loud you're talking. And when you get that immediate feedback, it allows you adjust the volume at which you talk.

There's no shortage of double ear headsets to choose from. Even within specific brands you have a very wide selection of models. So, how do you choose one that might be best for you? That's a hard one to answer honestly. You can read reviews, or talk to vendors, but my advice would be to try the headset BEFORE you buy it. And if your vendor won't give you a unit to try before you buy, then you should really find a new vendor.

There's absolutely no substitute for trying out the product before buying it. You can test the sidetone to make sure it's acceptable, but you can also test the headset for comfort, sound quality and more.

Why? Because these are the only headsets currently that contain firmware embedded into the microphone boom that interacts with the software. I'm sure other models will become available soon.

Secondly, you need to make sure that you're allowed to download software, because some organizations don't allow it. So, check with your IT Department to make sure it's allowable.

Here's a quick snapshot of what this software does:

1. Lets you know when your microphone boom is incorrectly postioned/located. This is to help avoid having poor audio quality.

2. You can set the decibel level for your work environment, and when noise exceeds that, you'll get an alert about noise reaching that level. You can then decide the best way to handle that.

3. The software can also keep track of how often you interrupt your callers. The truth is, callers don't like to be interrupted. It can be frustrating, and make them feel like what they have to say is unimportant. Plus, the Agent may miss out on important information.

4. The Engage + software even tracks how long you're silent, and how often. Most of us have had the experience of being on a call, and the person we're talking to goes silent for an awkward amount of time that prompts us to ask if they're still on the line.

5. If you try talking while your microphone is muted, you'll get notified right away. No more giving your best presentation segment only to find out that nobody heard you due to your mic being muted.

Not long ago I wrote a blog about the Apple Airpods 3, and whether those earbuds were a good idea for use on business calls. And if you happen to have read, or listened to it, you'll know that I wasn't giving them an enthusiastic endorsement for that kind of use. I'm pretty sure I used the word "sucks" in that blog more than I've ever used it. This is due to the degree to which it failed our sound tests. Weput the Airpods 3 up against the sounds of office noise, dogs barking, and a baby crying. All of these noises could be clearly heard, which says to me that the Airpods 3 essentially has zero noise reducing qualities.

Fast forward, and now the new Airpods Pro 2 have arrived. Needless to say, I was highly interested to see if Apple stepped up and fixed this issue in this new model. Sadly, I have to report that the Airpods Pro 2 performed pretty much the same as its predecessor, i.e., a major noise canceling flop. But I don't want you to take my word for it. But for me, I can't get far enough away of that kind of noise reduction if I'm on a business call.

Everyone who uses a computer at one time or another experiences frustration when it comes to using passwords. And I'm sure you know what I'm referring to. You know, you go to log in, and for one reason or another, you forgot your password and as a result, you're not getting access.

So what do you do? Chances are, you'll be clicking on that "forgot password" link in order to retrieve it. And if you're lucky, you'll have it sent to you, but it doesn't always go that way, because you'll probably end up having to create a new password. If you use a computer that's running Windows 10 or 11, you have a couple of features built in that can be helpful. Here's what I mean.

if you go to settings, accounts, sign in options, facial recognition Windows Hello, click on the box next to "use your face to sign into Windows, Apps and Service", then create a PIN as a backup login method, you can access Windows Hello.

Windows Hello allows you to login to your computer using your face, via a biometric, facial recognition webcam, such as the JPL Vision Access HD model. No more passwords to log in to your Windows 10, and 11 computers. Walk up, sit down, have a good look at your monitor, and logging in is done automatically.

There’s also another feature that works in tandem with Windows Hello that you might want to know about. This is called “Dynamic Lock.” This is how that feature works;

Under Dynamic Lock in Windows 10 and 11, you’ll see “allow Windows to automatically lock your device when you’re away” check that box. Then, take your phone with you when you step away from your computer, and when you’re out of Bluetooth range, your computer will lock automatically. When you return to your desk, you’d then log back in using your face.

Dynamic Lock is a very useful feature especially in work environments where there’s sensitive, and confidential information. It simply adds another layer of security, and these days, you can never have enough of that.

We all want to be efficient when we're at work, and we all want to get as much done as possible. Well, if you use a headset, and you're not using a feature called remote call answering, then you're not working as efficiently, and productively as you could be.

For those who aren't familiar with this term, and that headset feature, I'll give a quick overview.

Remote call answering is an optional feature on many wireless headsets that allow you to asnswer and end calls when you're away from your desk. And as simple as that might sound, there's actually some details about it that you should know about.

First, there are two types of devices that allow you to have this feature when using a wireless headset. These are:

1. A Handset Lifter Accessory
2. An Electronic Hookswtich Cable, or EHS for short.

So, what are these things, and how are they different?

Handset Lifter. The handset lifter accessory is an electro-mechanical devices that adheres to the surface of your desk phone, just beneath the handset. By being placed there, it's perfectly positioned to rest over the phone speaker, and it also is perfectly placed so that it can raise the handset out of the cradle, which it does.

When an incoming call comes in, the phone will ring, and when it does, the small sensor on the bottom of the lifter senses the ringer sound vibrations. Once detected, the lifter passed you a quiet ring tone into your headset earpiece to alert you of the incoming call.

This is where the remote call answering takes over. Now that you're aware of the incoming call, you just press the answer/end button on the headset to take the call. This button is sometimmes called the call control button. When the call is complete, press the button a second time to end it.
Electronic Hookswtich Cable. This cable performs the exact same function as the handset lifter with one large exception. The EHS cable doesn't require the physical lifting of the handset because everything is done electronically. And because of this device being electronic, you must properly match the right EHS cable to the right phone, and headset make and model. If you get that wrong, it won't work.

The key benefits of using a handset lifter or EHS cable include:

• You avoid missing calls
• You'll have far fewer voice messages to listen to
• You won't have many phone calls to return
• Your customers will be happy because they can reach you much easier, and more readily.
• You'll improve your work performance, and if that weren't enough, this is just a cool feature.

Headsets today, simply aren't the headsets of yesterday. Not only are they superior in just about every way, but you now have software to help make them even better.

In this episode, I'll talk about two of the many software programs that are available. In particular, I'll discuss the Plantronics HUB, and the Poly LENS. But first, you might wonder why the name differences, you know, Plantronics and Poly. Well, they're two of the same.

Not long ago, Plantronics acquired Polycom, which is a company well known for providing high quality audio and video equipment. The new company that emerged not only had an expanded product line, but also a new name; Poly. So, when you hear this name, you'll understand where it comes from.

The Plantronics HUB preceeded the LENS software. HUB is designed for use with legacy headsets such as the Savi line, and the CS500 series for example. Further, the HUB software is limited to use with headsets only. In other words, no other audio / video related devices are compatible.

With HUB you can perform firmware updates, customize ringtones, configure presence, choose a language for voice prompts, adjust device settings, receive visual mute and battery status, adjust HD audio and have easy access to pairing.

LENS, by comparison, is designed for more current models of devices, and LENS also allows you to use it with headsets, speakerphones, iP phones and video conferencing systems.

LENS is quite a bit different from HUB in that you can get automated device update notices so you'll know when an update is availabe. You can personalize your headset through settings, hear soundscape audio to help keep you distraction free and focused.

You also get a global view of all devices for simplified inventory control, device health and adoption, remote troubleshooting and updates, and LENS even reminds you when to take breaks, look away from your monitor and even rehydrate.

Mobile users also have a feature called Find MyDevice that always lets you know where it is.

So, to summarize, if you use legacy Plantronics headsets such as the Savi or CS500 series, you'll want to use the HUB software. But, if you use more current headset models, as well as some combination of speakerphones, Poly iP phones or video conferencing equipment, then LENS is your best bet.

Whether you spend your day on the phone in an office with 100 of your closest friends, or at home working solo, or even at large wherever that takes you, a good quality, great sounding, comfortable headset that's reliable is a necessity, not a nice to have item. Comfort. This is something you must have.The Jabra Engage 50 II double ear model weighs just 2.3 ounces. That's incredible when you consider most double ear headsets weigh 3-5 times as much. The mono, or single ear model weighs just 1.6 ounces. And when you add in the adjustable headband with the soft rubber band, and the extremely soft and nicely padded ear cushions, and you have a real recipe for a very comfortable headset.

Sound quality. The Engage 50 II sounds absolutely spectacular. I'm gushing a bit here because this headset deserves some of my best gushiness. Voice audio quality is top notch, and this thing kills background noise, and when it's doing that, the superb voice quality is maintained. That's something a lot of headsets struggle with.

Inline controller. This headset has some uniqueness about it when it comes to the inline controller.The audio volume raises, or lowers using a dial rather than buttons. It has a rubberized base to help keep it firmly planted on the desk, and it has a speaker so you can hear when you're receiving a call. Two programmable buttons are standard too.

Variants. You can get this headset with, or without the inline controller. USB-A, or C connectors, UC, or Microsoft Teams variants or a mono or duo wearing style.

The bottom line is this; using Airpods for calls considered important isn't a great idea., because they're simply not designed for business use. Listening to music? Fine. Having a casual conversation on your mobile phone? Fine. Listening to a Podcast, or watching a movie? All fine. Just not on calls that really matter when it comes to your success.

A better plan is to use a headset that's specifically designed for business, and one that will give you and your callers a far better call experience.

If you're like a lot of people, you probably slide in a pair of Airpods when you get on a business call. In just about every environment, there's distracting noise. For example, if you work in an office, there's coworkers chatting it up around you. One wireless headset feature that's remained popular since the day it was introduced over a decade ago is remote call answering. What is that you ask? Here's the long and short of it:

What happens when you miss incoming phone calls? Many times those callers leave a voice message because they weren't able to get ahold of you. They're disappointed, and you have messages to listen to, and calls to return. Remote call answering solves that problem.

With this feature, you can step away from your desk, and when a call comes in, you hear a quiet tone in the headset earpiece. That's to notify you of the incoming call. Once notified, all that needs to be done to take the call is press the call control button on the side of the headset. To end the call, press the same button a second time. This feature will work to the distance of your wireless headset's range, generally up to 100 feet for Bluetooth headsets, and up to 300 feet for DECT models.

The original device that was used to take calls remotely is called a handset lifter because part of its overall functionality was to "lift" the telephone handset receiver in order to take a call remotely. They're still in use today, and they work pretty well overall. One problem area is the double sided tape that adheres it to the phone loosens up over time and causes the lifter to get out of alignment. Yealink is a brand of headset that's been getting noticed. In the past, when you heard the name Yealink, headsets weren't the things that came to mind. Phones, and other tech products, for sure, but not headsets. That's changed recently because they've introduced a line of headsets that are feature rich, and modestly priced.

In this episode, I'll talk about one model in the Yealiink headset line that just got a couple of new updates. Specifically, I'm referring to the Yealink model BH72 Bluetooth wireless headset. So here are the new updates it just received.

First, the noise canceling feature on the microphone was enhanced. In other words, it got an update to give it better noise reducing capability. We tested this new and improved microphone by subjecting it to loud noises such as:

• Office noise
• Barking dogs
• And, a loud blender set on high just a couple of feet away

So, how did the BH72 do? (insert yawn here). Not stellar would be one thing that comes to mind. I'm not saying it doesn't remove noise, because it does. But what I am saying is it doesn't do a spectacular job at it. It's just average, even with this new update.

The same can't be said about some of the other Yealink models because those are incredible. So, I'll give this a three yawn rating, i.e., much to do about nothing.

Moving on to the second, and I might add, more interesting update is the new feature of remote call answering.

Now, when using a Yealink BH72, and RingCentral service, you can step away from your desk and answer and end a call. You can also mute the microphone from the headset rather than having to be at the desk to do that. In the end, your customers can reach you more readily, which gives them better service, and you don't have to listen to missed call voice messages, and a slew of calls to return. Everybody benefits.

Those are the two Yealink BH72 updates. The first being a yawner with that ho hum noise canceling mic update, and the second being the awesome remote call control feature.

Yealink is a good brand of headset because they have a reputation for giving you a lot of features for a reasonable price. I do like the BH72, but as I've noted in this narrative, I'm not a huge fan of its ability to filter out background noise nearly as well as the BH72 cousins can. All in all, a good brand of headset, and worth your consideration.

Headset microphones have come a long way. Twenty years ago, there were:

• Non-noise canceling microphones
• Noise canceling
• And ultra noise canceling

The ones that didn't remove noise were those offered by Plantronics (now Poly), and GN Netcom (now Jabra).

Poly's non-noise canceling headsets used Voice Tubes, which were clear plastic tubes that slid over the metal headset microphone. These clear tubes, were later available in a rainbow of colors so customers could brighten up their headsets, and sport their favorite color, with purple being one of the most popular colors.

Voice Tube headsets didn't remove any background noise. And because of that, they weren't well suited for environments that had a lot of noise. That didn't stop people from using them in noisy environments. Some probably didn't know they allowed background noise into the phone calls, and others probably didn't have an alternative headset to use.

GN Netcom/Jabra non-noise canceling headsets used Sound Tubes. Those were headsets with a slender, steel mic boom with a small black tip on the end. The tip would sometimes fall off and due to the size, it was easy to lose.

Both Voice Tubes, and Sound Tubes were prone to clogging with debris. Most of that debris was food particles from lunching, and snacking while workiing.

The other kind of headset was those that reduce room noise. And, after testing hundreds, I can say with confidence that some do a better job than others. Among the best are:

Poly headsets with Acoustic Fence noise reducing technology, Yealink headsets that have Acoustic Shield, and Discover, and Orosound headsets do a very good job as well. If I had to pick one, I'd pick the Yealink. That's because it does the best job at removing background noise, and it keeps the voice audio quality loud, clear and steady while the microphone is working to reduce noise. That's something that a lot of headsets struggle with.

Another option available to you today is the use of noise reducing software to help give you a better sounding call. One App that's helpful is Krisp. Krisp using ariticial intelligence to help reduce noise. This is something you might want to look into, and they offer a free trial so you can take it for a spin before deciding if it's helpful to you or not.

A couple of things for you to consider:

Make sure to position your microphone two fingers width from the corner of your mouth, and just below your lower lip for the best sound.

Consider using a microphone foam windscreen to help filter out wind , and to keep your microphone clean, and free of debris.

As for the Evolve2 65, and noise cancellation, well, that's a different matter. I listened to several noise tests where it was put up against the sounds of a typical office, dogs barking, and even the sound of a loud blender just a couple feet away. At times it seemed to dampen the noise pretty well, and other times, not so much. That left me feeling somewhere in the middle between feeling it was pretty good, and not so good. I came to the conclusion that it's good enough' not great, not bad, just somewhere in the middle. I've certainly heard microphones that did a better job at removing noise, but for sure, this one is good enough to use in business.

As for the ear speakers, Jabra did an amazing job with those. The sound you get out of the ear speakers is pretty impressive really. And no, I'm not suggesting that these ear speakers are in the same league as, say, Bose or Sony headphones. But what I am saying is for a business caliber headset, these ear speakers rock.

This means once you hear that tone, you can now press the call control button on your Discover Adapt 20, or 30 wireless headset to take the call. Calls can be taken up to the distance of your wireless headset. In these two headsets that means up to 100 feet in the case of the Adapt 20, which is a Bluetooth headset, and up to 300 feet for the Adapt 30, which is a DECT headset.

This feature allows you to step away from your desk, but still know when you're receiving an incoming call, and then gives you the ability to take the call. That means your callers can more readily reach you, and you'll have fewer messages to listen to, and fewer calls to return. Everybody wins.

1. You can now mute your Discover Adapt 20, and 30 at the headset, rather than from the application at your computer. With this new update, it makes it easier to mute the microphone because you can now mute directly from the headset, which is helpful especially if you're away from your desk.

Small feature enhancement? Maybe. But for those that use wireless headsets extensively, this is good news.

Anyone who's shopped for new headsets these days understands that there are a lot of things to be aware of. In that shopping process you'll be hit with things that may be unfamiliar. You know, things like:

• DECT vs. Bluetooth
• Wired vs. Wireless headsets
• Wearing styles; monaural, binaural, in the ear, on the ear, behind the neck, or convertible
• Transparency mode
• Active Noise Cancellation. What's that, and how's it different from passive noise cancellation?
• And of course there's the topic of USB-A connection vs. USB-C. What's the difference?

In this podcast, I'll attempt to shed some light on the last of these listed points. That is, the USB question. In doing so, I won't be getting overly technical, but instead, I'll keep it rather simple. After all, I have that kind of mind, so it suits me.

The first thing is these two connections look different from each other. USB-A is bigger, and it has squared off corners. The USB-C plug is much smaller, and the corners are rounded.

They also insert into the USB port differently. USB-A insertes one way only. We've all tried plugged one of these in, only to find it won't go. That's because it needs to be turned over and resinserted. When you use USB-C you can kiss all that goodbye. That's because you can insert it however you like because it can be inserted in either direction. I don't know about you, but I'm taking a liking to the C version.

The other big draw to the USB-C is faster transfer speeds, and more available power to charge things. But you know, much of that depends on the USB version being used. For example, if you're using USB-A version 3.2, and the same version on USB-C, you have the same transmission speed. But, most of us are likely using a lower version which means slower speed.

USB-C, unlike USB-A, can operate with Thunderbolt 3 and 4 whereas USB-A can't. Many of the newer computers are coming with Thunderbolt, so using USB-C is clearly an advantage in that sense.

The truth is, for the way most of us use USB, that is, transfering and uploading files such as pictures for example, USB-A is still very adequate. In some instances though, it may require a little patience, but at the end of the day, USB-A will get the job done.

USB-A was introduced in 1996, and C was introduced in 2014. Even with 8 years in the market, C hasn't fully overtaken A, and there are literally millions of USB-A devices still in use around the world. Will USB-C eventually cause the full phaseout of USB-A? It's looking that way. But again, that may be awhile.

There's no denying that headsets have changed a lot over the years, and one of those changes is business headsets are now being used with computers, and the main connection is done through the use of a USB Adapter/dongle.

These are small devices that are small enough, and portable enough, to make them an easy target for being misplaced or lost. So, if that were to happen to you, would you find yourself asking the question; "should I replace the USB Adapter, or should I just connect my headset to my computer using Bluetooth?" Before you make a quick decision, you might want to read a little further here, or have a listen to this podcast. That's because there's a little more going on beneath the surface that you should really know about.

Take for example, that when you connect using Bluetooth, you may find a few areas less efficient compared to when you were using that USB Adapter.

• You'll likely have a connection that's less stable
• Your audio quality may suffer
• Your wireless range will probably be less
• And, if you now use remote call answering, well that just flew out the window.

Most computers these days are Bluetooth enabled, but that doesn't mean they all are. And, if you happen to be using one that's not, then you can forget making any wireless connection to it. Instead, you may be left in a position where you can't use it with your computer at all, or, with some models, you might have the option to use it with a USB cable. But, when you do that, you're now using a wireless headset as a wired one. Not a huge amount of sense in that I don't think.

USB adapters are typically replaceable, and are priced in the neighborhood of $30.00 or so on the low end, and around $100.00 on the high side. So, depending on your make and model, the chances are good that you'll be paying somewhere around $50.00 or so. So the question you have to ask yourself is, is it worth it?

Well, what's a better connection, better audio quality, longer wireless range, and being able to take calls when you're away from your desk worth? To me, those things are worth every penny of the price. But again, that's a decision you'll have to make.

Feature #1. Active Noise Cancellation, or ANC for short. ANC is a feature that's designed to keep you focused on your work, by not being distracted by the noise going on around you. ANC is an electronic feature that helps to surpress noise so you, the person wearing the headset doesn'thear it.

Feature #2. Transparency mode. A common problem that replicates itself up to 2400 times a year is the need to take off a headset to have a face-to-face conversation, and then putting it back on to resume what you were doing. Transparency mode allows you to keep the headset on, but still have a face-to-face conversation with your coworkers. This is a feature you can activate, or deactivate, and it can go by different names such as Aware+, or HearThrough for example.

Feature #3. Ring detection, and remote call answering. This is productivity feature that allows you to step away from your desk, but still know when you have an incoming call. Once you're alerted (through a beep tone in the headset earpiece), you can press the headset call control button to take the call, and a second time to end it. This feature makes you very accessible to your callers, reduces the amount of voice messages you need to listen to, and dramatically cuts down the number of calls to return.

So the next time you find yourself in the market for new wireless headsets, keep these three technology features in mind before making that final decision. If you do, you'll be treated to some features that can make a world of difference in convenience, and your productivity.

The battery provides up to 28 hours of talk time, and you can continue using the headset even when it's plugged in for recharging.

The wireless range is typical for Bluetooth headsets at 100 feet, but actual usable range will more likely be around 50-75, as is the case with other Bluetooth headsets.

1. USB Adapter included now. Previous Tilde Pro's didn't come with this. This means a better connection, longer range, and better voice quality. You'll also get remote call answering if you're using RingCentral as your voice/video service.
2. USB A, and USB C connectors now are standard. So no matter which your computer uses, the Tilde will come with a compatible connector.

If most people were given a choice between using an office headset that was wired, or one that was wireless, most would choose the wireless. That's because wireless headsets don't have cords to get in the way, or snagged on the arm of desk chairs. They don't have wires which means you're free to move around your work area without the limitation of a cord.

In this podcast, I'll discuss the different features of both headsets, and by the end, you should have a good sense of how they're alike, and different.

Let's get started!

First, let's find out what they both connect to. The Poly Voyager 4245, and the Poly Savi 8240 both connect to desk phones, computers and mobile devices. On the surface, it would appear that they're identical in this way. Not really. Though they are the same in how they connect to desk phones, and computers, that isn't the case in how they connect to mobile devices.

The Voyager 4245 connects to a mobile device directly from the wireless headset, whereas the Savi 8240 connects to a mobile device through the headset base. And because the connection is made through the base, and not the headset, the 8240 can't be used outside of the office. So, if having a headset that's able to be used away from the office is what you seek, then the Voyager 4245 would be the better choice.

In terms of wireless range, there's a difference here too. The Voyager 4245 is rated up to 328 feet according to Poly. The Savi 8240 is stated to give you up to 590 feet, line of sight, and 180 feet in a typical office. Poly makes note of reduced wireless range in an office where obstructions exist, and also in an open field, or line of sight setting as well. Nice to see because that's real world stuff. They didn't make the same references to the Voyager 4245, but the range will be less in an office just like with the Savi 8240.

How about sound quality? Which is better? I have to say that we tested them in a quiet room, and one that had a lot of noise. The noises we used in our tests included; office noise, dogs barking, and a loud blender. In all these tests, both of these headsets did a very good job. First, the overall voice sound quality in a quiet room was very good. Both also did a very good job at reducing all the noise, and both did a good job at maintaining that voice quality when the microphone was dealing with the background noise.

But, if I had to pick one, it would be the Voyager 4245. That's because the audio quality was a bit better, and it kept the voice quality better when there was noise present.

The Savi 8240 gives you up to 7 hours of talk time, and the 4245 gives you two batteries with each yielding 5 hours of talk time. You can also consider the Savi 8245 model that also comes with two, hot swappable batteries.

You can't go wrong with either!

In this episode, I'll be explaining why the Jabra Pro 9460 remains a viable option for anyone who uses a desk phone, and computer for their business communications.

The Jabra Pro 9460 was discontinued on October 3, 2018 which could easily label it as outdated, especially when compared to the new models available today. However, in my view, the 9460 is still a headset that can help office professionals carry out the work of the day. Here's why I say that.

First, it's designed to be used in a business environment, and connect to a desk phone, and computer. Both devices are still actively used today which suggests that the 9460 is still relevant and viable as a headset solution.

Add to that this headset comes with wireless range well beyond what many new models offer. The Jabra Pro 9460 is stated to give you up to 490 feet of wireless talk range. Most Bluetooth headsets typically give you about 100 feet, with just a few offering up to 300 feet. The typical DECT headset, of which the 9460 is, provide up to 350 feet. So, even among all DECT headsets, the 9460 provides longer wireless range than most.

The battery pushes out up to 10 hours of talk time, which is low for a Bluetooth headset, but this being a DECT headset actually places it somewhere in the middle in terms of talk time. Some give you more talk time, and others less, so this is somewhere in between. Certainly enough battery to get anyone through a busy day. And worth noting is the battery can be replaced. Many headsets today require that you replace the headset when the battery no longer holds a charge.

The Jabra Pro 9460 is available in two configurations:

1. Over the head double ear
2. Over the head single ear, which includes an on-ear earloop. So you have two ways you can wear it. A behind the neck neckband is also available as an option.

The Pro 9460 can also be used with Jabra software for updating firmware, drivers, and cutomizing the headset. The downloads are available for Windows or MAC operating systems.

Jabra was ahead of its time when they developed the touch screen for use with the 9460. This interactive touch screen allows you to make adjustments to the headset, and the only other model I can think of that has this is the Yealink WH67. Jabra was clearly ahead on this.

So, from the standpoint of desk phone and computer connectivity, wireless range, professional sound quality (which we tested), noise reduction, the 10 hour replaceable battery all help to explain why I think the Jabra Pro 9460 is a legacy headset still worth a look.

In most cases, when you compare headsets, there's always a difference. The differences can be glaring, or they can be less so. But in about all cases, you'd never think that the two were the same because they either look much different, or they have a lot of technical differences.

In today's episode, I'll be talking about two Bluetooth headsets that could just about pass as twins. That is, if headsets could indeed be classified that way. But if so, these two come about as close as possible to being the same. I'm referring to:

• The Jabra Talk 65 Bluetooth on-ear wireless headset, and
• The BlueParrott M300-XT Bluetooth on-ear wireless headset

These headsets share a number of features that make them more alike than different, and in this episode I'll provide you with the details. So, let's get started!

Right out of the gate, placing these headsets side-by-side makes it hard to tell one from the other. They pretty much look the same. And, they weigh the same too at 0.7 ounces.

But, the similarities don't stop there because besides the physical similarities, and weight, they also give you the exact same amount of talk time at 14 hours. Besides that being coincidental, it's also impressive. There's not a lot of space to squeeze in a battery that's capable of pouring out that much power, but both do. Most on-ear Bluetooth headsets will give you far less talk time, typically in the 7 hour range. So, with that in mind, you can appreciate this.

Even the wireless range is the same at 300 feet. Again, this is impressive because most Bluetooth headsets are rated up to 100 feet, with some giving you even less. So, for both of these headsets to give you that much talk range, it's pretty amazing really.

The Talk 65 can't be used with the Jabra Plus software for firmware updates, and other customizations, but that isn't the case with the BlueParrott M300-XT. In this way, these headsets are different. You can use the BlueParrott with the available software for customization and firmware updates.

The BlueParrott M300-XT also has a PTT (push to talk) feature included that allows you to communicate with colleagues at the press of a button, without the need to access the phone manually. You won't find this on the Talk 65.

Sound quality edge, in my view, goes to the Talk 65. Both sound good, and reduce noise well, but to my ear, the Talk 65 sounded a little better especially when background noise was present.

Both headsets are professional, and both come with a 1-year warranty, and they both cost the same too at $99.99.

Wireless headsets come in a variety of sizes, and shapes. They also come in a variety of price ranges too. In this episode of the Headset Advisor Podcast, I'll introduce you to a little know brand that costs less than $100.00. In fact, it costs less than $50.00, and it makes a claim of reducing 99.9% of background noise. So for around $35.00, you can get a Bluetooth noise assassin? Well, in this episode, we're going to run this headset through the paces to see how it does, and more importantly, if it truly removes that much noise.

We'll also test and evaluate the overall sound quality. And, if you're interested to know how much talk time, and wireless range you'll get, well, we cover that too.

There's even a feature on this headset that's driving some people bonkers, and you'll find out what that is.

First, this is a mono Bluetooth headset, with no duo style available. So for those who like to have one ear open, to hear what's going on around them, then this is the style for you. If you're someone who likes both ears covered, then I'm sorry to say, you're out of luck on this one.

As for battery life, this headset dishes out up to 35 hours of talk time. Impressive given its modest price. That's a lot of battery power that can keep you talking for days before a recharge is needed. And when you recharge, it can be done via the included USB C cable, or if you upgrade to the charge base, you simply dock the headset to charge the battery. A recharge takes 1.5 hours.

Wireless talk range is a disappointment at only up to 33 feet. Most Bluetooth headsets give you range up to 100 feet, and others to 300. And, when you figure usable range is estimated to be around half of stated range, that puts this headset at around 16 feet. Not impressive, though the price needs to be kept in mind.

99.9% noise reduction? No way. It does make the claim, but in our tests, there was a fair amount of the background noise clearly detectable. And, the voice audio quality suffered when background noise was present. With no background noise, the voice quality was better though. So take that 99.9% noise reduction claim with a very large helping of skepticism.

This headset is cheap to buy, and when you look over the build, and the fit and feel, it does feel on the cheap side. I'm sure that's hard to avoid given it's price point. But, for what you pay, I have to say that this headset is fairly decent all things considered. For sure it's no premium headset, and it doesn't pretend to be. So if buying one is something you might be considering, don't expect lush appoiintments, or premium features because if you do, you'll be disappointed.

A lot of people today are doing business on the go. This could be a Real Estate or Sales professional, or a Truck Driver. Whatever it is that has you out of the office, and connected to your company and customers, one thing is for sure, you need to be hands free, and preferrably, wire free.

In this episode, I'll be discussing and comparing two very similar on-ear Bluetooth wireless headsets from the top two business headset companies in the world; Poly (formerly Plantronics), and Jabra. These companies represent number one and number two largest providers of headsets for working professionals.

The two products I'll showcase here are:

• The Poly Voyager 5200 Bluetooth wireless headset
• The Jabra Talk 65 Bluetooth wireless headset

When you place these headsets next to each other, they look very much the same, in fact, they not only look pretty much the same, but they weigh the same too.

Looks, and weight aside, there are some notable differences that are important to know about if either of these headsets are being considered.

Starting with battery life.

The Poly Voyager 5200 gives you 7 hours of battery life, whereas the Jabra Talk 65 gives you 14 hours. If you're someone who's on the phone a lot, then having twice the battery life can really make a difference. And while on the subject of batteries, it's important to note that both of these batteries cannot be replaced once it no longer holds a charge. All batteries can only be recharged so many times before they will no longer hold one. And once that happens, as it does with all headset batteries, the headset will need to be replaced. Something to keep in mind so that you're not caught off guard when this happens.

In terms of wireless talk range, the Jabra Talk 65 has the edge over the Voyager 5200 as well. The Poly Voyager 5200 gives you up to 98 feet of wireless talk range, whereas the Jabra Talk 65 is rated up to 300 feet. So, the Jabra gives you twice the talk time, and three times the wireless range.

We also ran both of these headsets through some challenging sound tests that included voice audio quality, background noises such as office sounds, dogs barking, and of course, our Vitamix blender test. Both of these headsets did a good job, but in my view, the Jabra sounded just a bit better, and also removed more of the background noise.

Now in all fairness, the Poly Voyager 5200 is an aging product, and the Jabra Talk 65 is new. And because the Talk 65 is new, it has the advantage of being able to take advantage of newer technologies. So even though the Voyager 5200 is lagging behind in this comparison, the generational differences need to be kept in mind.

Also, the 5200 can be used with the Poly Lens software for updating firmware, and making headset customizations. The Talk 65 isn't compatible with the Jabra plus software at this time.

Both are very good headsets for sure, but I think in this comparison, if talk time, range, and sound quality are important, I feel the Talk 65 has the edge over the Voyager 5200.

It's light and comfortable, with it weighing 6.2 ounces, which makes it on the lighter side of headset weight. Not the lightest, but light. The memory foam ear cushions, and silicone padded headband add to the comfort of this headset.

You get a lot of talk and listening time too:

• 37 hours of listening time
• 35 hours of talk time if the busy light is off (24 if the light is on)

Here's the time required to recharge the battery:

• 37 hours of battery life in 90 minutes

Learn about a wireless Bluetooth headset that you've likely never heard of, but one that gives you professional sound quality, and it's price is amazingly affordable.

In this episode of the Headset Advisor Podcast, you'll learn about the Anker H500 Bluetooth wireless headset. This is a headset that can be used with your computer as well as with your mobile phone.

It comes with a USB A adapter, which is unexpected in a headset that's in this price range. Having a USB Adapter is known to give you better sound quality, a more steady, and reliable connection and in some cases, longer wireless range. Although you won't get remote call answering with this adapter, you can still use your H500 with all the leading UC platforms.

The Anker H500 connects to two devices simultaneously which means you can seamlessly switch between the computer, and your mobile phone. This is nice because you don't have to fuss with all the connect/disconnect stuff because it's done automatically.

The ear speakers, in spite of having 40mm drivers, give you average sound. Not great, not poor, just middle of the road. And for sure, you won't be getting Bose or Sony type audio, but good enough for how most of us; audiophiles excluded.

The microphone provides very good sound quality so your callers will hear you loud and clear. Another thing that helps to make that happen is the noise canceling mic. We threw noises at it such as office noise, dogs barking and of course, our annoying, and loud, blender test. The Anker H500 not only did an impressive job to remove a lot of that noise, but it also maintained the voice audio quality as it dealt with those noises. It's important to note that we test a lot of headsets at Headset Advisor, and not all can maintain voice quality when dealing with room noise. The Anker H500 is one of those wireless headsets that can.

Something you'll find on the H500 that's a bit unique is how you mute the microphone. Most headsets provide a mute button. Others may require you to raise the mic boom, but the H500 gives you three ways. The first is by raising the mic boom. The second is by moving the mic side ear speaker away from your ear, and the final way is by pressing the mute button. I'm not sure why Anker thought it necessary to provide 3 ways to mute the mic, but this is something you don't see on other headsets.

The weight of this headset is about average for double ear models. The headband is not only adjustable, but it's padded which helps it to be comfortable. The ear cushions are also nicely padded so between the weight, the adjustable, padded headband and soft ear cushions, this is a headset you should be able to wear all day.

The battery gives you 24 hours of talk time, and 35 hours of listening if the transparency mode isn't activated. And, 5 minutes on the charger gives you 3 hours of battery life, which is impressive.

The transparancy mode I just referenced is a standard feature on the Anker H500. This is a feature designed to allow you to hear your surroundings without the need to remove the headset. This is a premium feature that's not common on budget headsets like this.

There's more to this headset beyond what I've covered here, but suffice it to say that you get a lot of value for the money spent on this headset. The Anker H500 will cost you between $100.00 - $120.00, which I think is a very reasonable price based on what you get.

Headsets are used more today than ever before. This is largely due to the rise in use of computers for our audio and video communication needs. And when on these important calls, having a good quality headset really helps you to sound your best, and gives you a hands free, wire free experience.

Headsets can also be a big help for those who use desk phones, or mobile phones as well. In this episode, I'll be discussing a wireless headset that's able to be used with all these devices; desk phone, computer and mobile phone. I'm referring to the Poly Savi 8220 DECT wireless headset.

Being that this is a DECT headset means it will give you longer wireless range. DECT headsets are typically rated up to 350 feet of wireless range. The Poly Savi 8220 is rated up to 590 feet, which is impressive. Poly does, however, state that in an office, you should expect to get about 180 feet because the 590 feet is based on line of site, or open field testing which doesn't accurately replicate an office environment.

The Poly Savi 8220 comes with a feature that's unique to this DECT headset; Active Noise Cancelation. This is a feature that's designed to remove unwanted background noise so you, the person wearing the headset, can concentrate better. And though this isn't a unique feature among all headsets, it is unique among DECT headsets which makes the 8220, with ANC, unique among all other DECT wireless headsets.

In terms of sound quality, which is important, the 8220 does a respectable job at providing professional voice quality. Where it fails, in my opinion, is in reducing background noise. It does maintain good voice audio quality while reducing noise, but the noise it attempts to remove is still very detectable, which isn't what you want. So I feel that Poly could improve the 8220 by improving the microphone noise canceling ability.

Worth noting is when connecting to a mobile phone via Bluetooth, you only get a wireless range of around 30 feet. Though this is acceptable for using the headset with a mobile phone in an office, it doesn't allow you to use it on the go. Still, having triple connectivity is a very attractive feature of this headset in spite of limitations such as this.

The 8220 is optimized for use with Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, and Zoom. This means you can answer and end calls when away from the desk right from the headset. Other headsets would require you to return to your desk to accept the call. If answering a call from your desk phone, you'd be required to use a handset lifter, or Electronic Hookswitch Cable, with both being optional, and inexpensive.

The Savi 8220 weighs 5.6 ounces making it around middle of the pack in terms of weight. Some are lighter, some heavier. And, it has a nicely padded headband and soft ear cushions making this a headset you can wear for long periods of time.

That's because environments vary, and environments contain obstructions which weaken wireless signals, and consequently, wireless range. So, the Adapt 20 should give you about 50 feet, and the Adapt 30 about 175. Good enough for most needs I'd say.

In terms of the sound quality, both give you a very sharp, clear, professional sound, and both reduce background noise at a high level, which is good for anyone who deals with that. Very good microphone, and one that maintains the voice audio quality even when dealing with noise reduction.

Good noise reduction, but the microphone lacks richness. Speakers are less than premium

Best wireless for loud environments goes to the Jabra Evolve2 75 at around $385.00. 8 microphones that help delliver superb voice audio quality, and amazing noise reduction. When not needed, the mic stores out of sight into the earpiece. Comes with Active Noise Cancelation for enhanced concentration, and traditional wireless range of around 100 feet.

Once plugged in, it's really plug and play from there which makes using it a breeze (cool breeze that is)

This is a fukll duplex speakerphone, which means you can have a natural conversation, just as though talking face to face. You have the ability to interject comments while the other party is talking, which is a simplified way of explaining Full Duplex. Without this feature, you'd have to wait for the other party to stop talking before you could say anything. Not natural really.

The sound quality on this speakerphone, to me, is mixed. In terms of the voice audio quality, it's really good. The sound is sharp, and clear. But, when unwanted background noise is present, it struggles to eliminate it. In our tests, we could easily hear the background noise which leads me to conclude that Poly could improve this speakerphone by improving the noise canceling ability.

The Poly Sync 10 is IP64 rated, which means that it's water and dust resistant. This means that if it were to be submerged in water, it probably wouldn't come back from that. But, a sprinkle of dust or water here and there, and it should handle that just fine. And we all have dust in our environments, and some of us even break into a sweat when having our annual performance reviews with our boss. I guess that makes the Poly Sync 10 sweatproof too.

The price of the Sync 10 is around $110.00, which is about right for this speakerphone. Yes, you could get a Jabra Speak 410, or 510, but you'd pay more. And, would you really get more? I, for one, like the looks of this speakerphone, and it sounds great, just not in a noise room. So if you work in a reasonably quiet area, and need a hands free speakerphone, this is one that should seriously be on your short list.

The headsets are lightweight and comfortable at 3 ounces for the mono, and 3.9 for the duo which makes them among the lightest of all headsets we've tested to date. This weight helps to translate into comfort. The lighter, the better. And the padded headband, and comfy ear cushions only add to the comfort.

The inline controller gives you buttons to access volume, mute and call control, which are all pretty standard.

In today's episode of the Headset Advisor Podcast, I'll be talking about the Sony XM5 headphones. As many of you may know, the XM5 replaced the former XM4 model.

When you listen to this Podcast, you'll find out some interesting things about the Sony XM5. Things such as:

Sony, like other premium brands, has a reputation for making high quality, great sounding products. Their name has been synonomous with quality for decades. So, does this new pair of headphones deserve to wear the Sony badge, or does it come up short? Let's take a look and find out.

First, it's a bit lighter than the former XM4, and it doesn't fold up like it either. Instead, the XM5 comes with a hard shell carry case so you can transport it without risk of damage. Good to know for those who are on the go, and need headphones.

The Sony XM5 connects to computers and mobile devices, and does so through Bluetooth and 3.5mm connections. This gives you more than one way to connect the XM5 to your devices. And while on the subject of connectivity, the XM5 doesn't come with a USB Adapter. This means that you won't have the remote call answering feature. For some, that's a deal breaker because being able to answer calls when away from the desk not only gives customers better service, but helps you to avoid that mountain of voice messages to wade through.

The battery life on the Sony XM5 is as follows:

For music, you get 30 hours of listening time when using the Active Noise Canceling feature. And, you get 40 hours when ANC is turned off.

When it comes to talk time, you get 24 hours when using ANC, and 32 when it's off.

The battery recharge time is 3.5 hours, and you get 3 hours of battery life by charging for only 3 minutes. Pretty amazing really.

All in all, I'd say that's a pretty robust battery that clearly provides more than enough battery power for anyone's day.

When listening to music, you can pause it by removing the headphones, and resume by placing the headphones back on. You can also pause the music by just starting a conversation. Sony refers to this as Speak-to-Chat. Music resumes when the conversation is over.

You can hear your surroundings by placing the palm of your hand over the ear speaker housing. When you do that, it opens up some microphones that allow you to hear what's going on around you. Remove your hand, and the feature is deactivated. This feature helps to avoid the need to continuously remove the headphones every time you want to hear something.

As for sound quality, and noise reduction, Sony did a great job with both. In fact, they used an Ai machine learning algorithm that listened to 500 million voice samples to learn how to surpress it, while keeping the voice audio quality high. Well, in my estimation, Sony knocked it out of the park. The XM5 sounds great, and it did a surprisingly good job at reducing unwanted background noise.

As I mentioned earlier, the Sony XM5 comes with Active Noise Cancelation. This is a feature that electronically lowers room noise. This feature is designed to allow you to better focus on your tasks while not being distracted by the sounds going on around you. And of course if you do want to hear what's going on around you, you can cup your palm over the ear speaker housing as I mentioned earlier.

All things considered, this is a great pair of headphones, albeit not perfect, but great none the less. This product could be improved if it included a USB Adapter that was optimized for use with the leading UC platforms. Short of that, this is a pair of headphones well worth your time to consider.

So, my take on that is more work needs to be done before they can truly claim this to be a noise canceling microphone. However, with that said, there is an App called Krisp which is designed to reduce background noise. If you used the ModMic in tandem with Krisp, you might end up with a better outcome over using it by itself.

The ModMic is compatible with MAC, Unex, Windows and PS4/PS5 devices.

The Poly 5200 UC is worn over the ear, with an ear gel that get inserted into the ear canal. The Shokz Opencomm UC, by comparison, is worn behind the neck, with circular pads (2) that rest against the bone just behind each ear. And because of that design, it leaves both ears uncovered.

The Poly 5200 UC pipes sound directly to the ear canal, where the Opencomm UC bypasses the ear canal entirely through its use of bone conduction technology. This can be an advantage, especially for those who have hearing challenges.

The wireless talk range is the same on both with a rating of up to 100 feet. Though in our tests, the Opencomm gave us a little more range. Not a lot more, but a little.

In terms of battery life, the Poly 5200 UC is rated up to 7 hours of talk time, with a recharge time of 1.5 hours. This headset also comes with a portable charge case for charging on the go.

The Opencomm UC has a battery that's rated up to 16 hours of talk time, and up to 8 hours of listening time. 5 minutes on the charger yields 2 hours of battery life, which is impressive.

Both headsets do not have batteries that can be replaced. This means when the battery no longer holds a charge, the headset will need to be replaced.

The Poly 5200 UC is optimized for use with the leading UC platforms such as Microsoft Teams, RingCentral, Zoom and others. This means you can answer, and end calls when away from the desk. The Opencomm UC can't offer this convenience.

In our sound tests, the Opencomm UC sounded a bit better, and reduced unwanted noise better than the Poly 5200 UC. But, when outdoors, the 5200 handled wind better. Likely due to Poly's "WindSmart" techology.

Believe it or not, many headsets struggle to keep the voice sounding good as it reduces background noise.

Both headsets have an inline controller with the ususal features such as volume, mute, and call answer. But, the D722U also has a built-in speaker on the back for training, hearing incoming calls, listening to music, and some computers don't come with speakers. The D722U also allows you to turn on/off sidetone.
