The label "evangelical" has shifted and evolved over time to a place in our present day when the term comes with all sorts of baggage - from cultural and political connotations to even racial and patriarchal assumptions.

In this 3-part series, Pastor Jay and Matt Gilleskie discuss the word in order to help the Bible Church navigate some complex cultural circumstances by clearly staking out our identity as an evangelical church.

In Part III, they address the following questions:

  1. What do we mean when we say that CHBC is an "evangelical" church?

  2. What kind of "evangelical" do we aspire to be, in particular? How do we get there?

How does Satan parody marriage through contemporary practices of dating and sexuality? How does he parody joy through the false promises of money, ecstatic experiences, and debauchery? The Evil One works through various aspects of our culture to enslave us and keep us from the good of God's design. Thanks be to God, who has delivered us from the dominion of sin through Christ. Now that we are free, how do we identify the distortions of the Evil One? Jay and Matt discuss the practical payoff of these questions in this episode.

In this episode, Jay and Matt get practical. How can I begin to pray? How can I pray more? What next steps can I take at CHBC to pray more, individually and together? How do I discern my vocation and how I can serve the purposes of God's kingdom? They take up all of these questions and more in this episode. We hope it's helpful!

Jay is back this week to discuss his most recent sermon on serving and protecting the creation from Genesis 1-2. He and Matt talk everything from "Patagucci" to Jonathan Edwards to theological ethics. Conservative Christians generally don't give much attention to the stewardship of creation as a biblical theme. How should we think about stewardship? What forces in our modern world work against a proper use of creation? How do Sabbath and stewardship interrelate? Listen as Jay and Matt discuss and apply to CHBC.

On this episode, Matt asks Ryan about his aims for the recent sermon on ethnic division and reconciliation. How can our church move forward together? They discuss the importance of being captivated by the biblical story of reconciliation and the necessity of prayer as the fuel for reconciling work. Pursuing sexual purity – and holiness in general – requires God's grace. One of God's graces to us is the fellowship of the local church. Listen as Jay and Matt discuss the cultural features that make sustained repentance from sexual sin difficult and, more importantly, the counter-culture that our church should foster to help those who struggle with sexual sin find deeper satisfaction in the Lord.

It is hard to talk about gender, sexuality, and identity today. How can Christians think well about these topics and find strength to live according to what the Scriptures teach? They should start with Jesus, holding fast to the Head. His Incarnation demonstrates the goodness of the human body and reveals the fact that we will be forever gendered, embodied beings. These facts have profound implications for those who are married, single, young, same-sex attracted, gender dysphoric, and more. Pray with us that these reflections will help our church think and act in ways that glorify our Lord Jesus Christ!

Ryan is out this week, but that didn't stop Jay and Matt from talking about what it means to be holy and how God makes us holy. In particular, they focus on suffering. We all suffer, and we often feel that our suffering is purposeless. But the Bible calls us to fix our eyes on Jesus, who suffered for us, as we endure hardship. How can we suffer in such a way that we grow in holiness in the process?

We spent a lot of time on the relationship of science to the Christian faith this Sunday, but the whole sermon was anchored in Genesis 2:1-4, where God sets apart the Sabbath day for rest and worship. In this episode, Jay and Ryan unpack the Sabbath in greater detail: Is the sabbath legally binding on Christians? How does the Bible speak of the Sabbath? How can we practice Sabbath? What cultural forces militate against resting in God's provision? Far from being merely a point of theological intrigue, the Sabbath principle has great relevance for how we live as exiles in a frantic culture.

One quarter of self-professing Evangelicals believe that religious belief is a matter of opinion, not about objective truth. Although this sentiment has been expressed in a new way in our postmodern age, the question of objective truth has been asked throughout history. Even Pontius Pilate asked Jesus, “what is truth?” (John 18:38).

On this episode, Jay, Ryan, and Matt discuss how the Bible and Christians throughout history have thought about truth, especially as it relates to the content of the Christian faith.

Roughly 40 percent of self-professing Evangelicals agree that God accepts the worship of all religions. They are not alone: many today believe that all religions are different but valid paths culminating in the same life after death. But the Bible paints a different picture, one that insists on the glory and singularity of Jesus Christ, the one mediator between God and man, and the plan that God is working through Christ to renew the world. Jay, Ryan, and Matt discuss this tenet of Christian faith and its implications.

Almost half of self-professing Evangelicals believe that everyone sins a little, but most people are good by nature. On this episode, Jay, Ryan, and Matt discuss the witness of the Bible and the church’s tradition on this widespread belief. They also consider why modern people are disposed to this belief, and how the nuance of Scripture allows us to affirm both creaturely goodness and the widespread presence of sin.

In this new series, Jay, Ryan, and Matt discuss some of the findings of Ligonier Ministries’ State of Theology survey. About one third of self-professing Evangelicals believe that Jesus was a great teacher, but he wasn’t God. Questioning Jesus’ identity as fully God and fully man has deep historical roots. Why might this belief be so prevalent today, especially among those who claim to be Christians? How should Christians who want to stand on the Bible and in the tradition of the church understand Jesus’ identity? Jay, Ryan, and Matt discuss these questions and more in this episode.

Francis Grimke turned down a university presidency to continue pastoring. He helped found the NAACP. And he had some prescient words for white churches in his day and in our own. His message was exceedingly simple – (1) preach, believe, love, share, and treasure the gospel; and (2) obey it with all of your might. Grimke’s understanding of the church’s role in broken hearts and a broken society has much to teach us today.

Amanda Berry Smith emerged from slavery and great hardship eager to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ. She traveled to Britain, India, and Liberia to do just this: she worked with and supported churches, all the while proclaiming Christ to all who would listen. She later founded the first orphanage for black children in Illinois, funding it partially out of her own pocket. In word, Smith proclaimed true religion; in deed, she exemplified it.

Charles Octavius Boothe was born a slave. He learned to read, was converted, and turned his able mind to the “uplift” of African Americans living under the post-Reconstruction, Jim Crow regime. He planted churches, started schools and colleges, assembled churches’ resources to send missionaries, and much more. His work displays his keen attention to the weak, the powerless, the “foolish” (1 Cor. 1); his efforts betray his conviction that all people ought to have access to the beauty of God via the study of him.

Jay and Ryan are taking a break, so we begin a new series with Matt Gilleskie (our producer) flying solo. In this episode, Matt introduces you to Lemuel Haynes, a remarkable pastor and activist living during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Haynes was the first African American ordained in any religious body in America, the first to receive an honorary graduate degree, and a pastor of character, commitment, and intense hope in the Sovereign God. This brother has much to teach us.

Lemuel Haynes", Timothy Mather Cooley

  • "Black Puritan, Black Republican: The Life and Thought of Lemuel Haynes", 1753-1833, John Saillant (note: “Republican,” as used in the title, denotes sympathy with the American cause against Great Britain and monarchy generally, not a contemporary political party)

Restrictions on gathering during the pandemic call for robust reflection on the church’s life together. That’s why Jay, Ryan, and Matt are investigating the theological and practical import of the physical gathering of the local church. This episode takes the theme in a slightly different direction than previous episodes in this series. Jay, Ryan, and Matt talk about the spiritual practice of feasting — not gluttony - but celebrating over a meal with friends. How does God work through such a practice? Is that even in the Bible? Tune in to find out.

Since its inception, CHBC has been known as a gathering of believers from diverse backgrounds of thought and culture. And, while such diversity is often a blessing; loving agreement in Christ between those who disagree politically presents unique challenges for pastoral shepherding.

In this episode, Jay and Ryan discuss those challenges. They name the difficulties and the joys associated with pastoring a diverse congregation. They clarify other statements that the church has made on the riot at the Capitol. They discuss the "how" of communication (the means used to deliver a message). And they examine and explain their motives and intentions, which have guided their responses.

Near the end of the episode, Pastor Jay references a sermon by Zack Eswine called, "What Does Jesus Say About God and Country?" Watch the message here: https://subspla.sh/5mw6hpt

Restrictions on gathering during the pandemic call for robust reflection on the church’s life together. That’s why Jay, Ryan, and Matt are investigating the theological and practical import of the physical gathering of the local church.

This episode builds on the conceptual foundation of the previous episode. Given that the physical gathering of the local church is essential to being a church and discipleship in the way of Jesus, what place do internet and digital media have in church? Can these complement the physical gathering of the local church? Do these detract from the life of the church? Jay, Ryan, and Matt try to understand the proper uses and limits of technology in the church’s regular, gathered worship.

Restrictions on gathering during the pandemic call for robust reflection on the church’s life together. That’s why Jay, Ryan, and Matt are investigating the theological and practical import of the physical gathering of the local church. In this series’ first episode, they ask, What is a church, really? They discuss the essential marks of the church presented in the Bible (and perpetuated in church history) and the implications of some of the images used to describe the church: a flock, a family, and God’s possession.

Over the past several months, overt racial tension has spurred conversations about racism in our society and the church. There are a variety of opinions on the subject, so we are working to STOP & LISTEN to others in our church family who have a story to tell.

In this episode, Young and Sarah Whang join Jay and Ryan to relate their experiences of ethnic insensitivity and prejudice in the church. Young describes the feeling of not belonging at CHBC, despite being an established leader and member of the church. Sarah discusses her father's trauma following a hate crime: he was brutally beaten on account of his race. She also relates her story of discovering the multifaceted experience of minorities - including her own - in a majority white culture. She concludes with helpful exhortations to guide our church as we pursue robust ethnic unity.

On this episode of Bespoken, Jay, Ryan, and Matt (a CHBC member) discuss the complex terminology that often attends conversations on race. They address the origins of the concept of “race,” the act of a “micro-aggression,” what we mean we say “critical race theory,” and more. But this episode isn’t merely a dictionary – Jay, Ryan, and Matt highlight the necessity of compassion, particularly in dialogue about the personal ramifications of racial injustice. How can we embody compassion – fellowship with those who are suffering – in our pursuit of ethnic unity?

The last several weeks of racial tension in our country have opened up new conversations and dialogue around racism in our society and the church. There's a wide array of opinions on the subject, so we will be taking the next several weeks to STOP AND LISTEN to others in our church family who have a story to tell.

In this episode, Pastors Jay and Ryan sit down (over Zoom) with four graduate students to listen to their perspective on Black Lives Matter and racial inequality. No matter what side you find yourself on around this debate, we are inviting you to STOP & LISTEN.

In this episode, Pastors Jay and Ryan kick off the series and lay the groundwork for the episodes ahead with a foundation laid in the gospel of Jesus. While the temptation is to quickly offer up solutions to the systemic problems of racism, we don't want the story and emotion of this moment in history to be dismissed. So, no matter what side you find yourself on around this debate, we are inviting you to STOP & LISTEN.

We're watching the Coronavirus wreak havoc on all of us - emotionally, financially, socially, and even our faith. And yet, as Christians, we're anchored in God's identity - particularly His sovereignty and providence. It's out of God's rest that we as followers of Jesus can be a life raft to those around us while we watch the ships of the world go down.

Corrie ten Boom wrote, "If you look at the world, you'll be distressed. If you look within, you'll be depressed. If you look at God, you'll be at rest."

In this episode, Pastors Jay, Ryan and Roddy discuss how we as the hands and feet of Jesus can minister to our neighbors and community during this epidemic and point them to the beacon of hope who is Jesus.

If you're at all in-tune with internet culture, you're probably familiar with Rhett and Link and their YouTube show, "Good Mythical Morning" - a comedy daily show with over 16 million subscribers and over 6 billion total video views. From food challenges to music antics, Rhett and Link have achieved tremendous YouTube success and a huge following. A little unknown fact about their rise to success is that it had its beginnings in North Carolina evangelical culture where they served as Cru missionaries on the UNC campus before launching their entertainment career writing skits and music for "What's In the Bible?" (The Fabulous Bentley Brothers). Rhett was even a part of the Bible Church family in the mid-2000s!

This past February on their Ear Biscuits podcast, Rhett and Link each decided to tell their spiritual deconstruction stories from born again, faithful followers of Jesus to "hopeful agnostics." With their stories hitting close to home, Pastors Jay and Ryan - along with fellow colleague, Colin Rowley - address their spiritual deconstruction and offer some feedback and counsel to those who might be mourning this news or are in a similar place in their faith journey.

What is Reformation Day? It is the day the light of the gospel broke forth out of darkness. It was the day that began the Protestant Reformation. It was a day that led to Martin Luther, John Calvin, John Knox, and may other Reformers helping the church find its way back to God’s Word as the only authority for faith and life and leading the church back to the glorious doctrines of justification by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. It kindled the fires of missionary endeavors, it led to hymn writing and congregational singing, and it led to the centrality of the sermon and preaching for the people of God. It is the celebration of a theological, ecclesiastical, and cultural transformation.

In this episode, Pastor Jay Thomas and Ryan McKee discuss the birth of the Protestant Reformation on October 31st, and its implication to us today 502 years later.
