The Rooted in Currituck podcast is a journey through the stories of our guests about growing up and growing in Currituck County, North Carolina. We hope the stories told by our farmers, 4-Hers, homemakers and longtime residents paint a more vivid picture of this place. And we aim to highlight and preserve the history of agriculture and agricultural related organizations in our community.
Jodi Lockhart, a long time Extension Master Gardener Volunteer shares her memories of the Master Gardener program in Currituck in the late nineties through today. We also take a look back at an article written by on of our very first Extension Master Gardener Volunteers, Ms. Thelma Ganyon. Chris Blaha then shares key information on the current state of the Currituck Extension Master Gardener program and how folks can get involved.
Al Wood who served as the Agriculture Extension Agent from 1985 until 1998 shares his stories about unexpected field visits, the connections he made in the Currituck Community and meeting the love of his life through his work at the Currituck Extension Center. We also take a look back at the origins of the 4-H Day Camping program in Currituck and learn the reasons why we do what we do in the Currituck 4-H Program.
Wilson Snowden, Currituck native shares stories about the Snowden store, farming, the creation of the Crawford Fire department, his time as a magistrate and more. We also look back at what canning education was being done in Currituck in the 1960s as well as the resources we still provide today.
In this episode, Rodney Sawyer, Currituck Extension Director Emeritus talks to us about what Currituck was like when he was a boy as well as the importance of Extension demonstration work. We also hear about what Extension was focusing on in the 1970s and how demonstration work is done today.
This episode features former Currituck History Teacher and Local Historian, Barbara Snowden. We also share an excerpt from the Extension report of 1932 that talks about Mr. JP Knapp and Mr. Dudley Bagley, influential figures in the development of Currituck County. Finally, in our Training for Today segment we discuss plant hardiness zones and native plants.
Long time Currituck County Commissioner, Owen Etheridge shares his memories of growing up in Currituck and his insights on how the county has changed. We also take a look back to some major accomplishments made under the leadership of Home Demonstration Agent, Virginia Edwards Brumsey. Finally, we explore how Cooperative Extension today helps farmers preserve their livelihoods and how we can all get involved in supporting agriculture.
Take a listen back at all of the excitement from the 2021 Currituck Farm Festival - you'll hear about the tractor parade, the displays, the skillet and wrench throwing contests and more. You'll also hear from Mr. Harvey Roberts, current owner/operator of a Century Farm in Shawboro, NC. He describes growing up on a farm in Currituck County and how the farm and farming techniques have changed over the years. In this episode, we introduce Rooted in Currituck - the new podcast produced by the Currituck County Center of North Carolina Cooperative Extension. This podcast series will interview Currituck residents that have engaging stories to share about rural life and growing up in Currituck County. This first episode interviews current County Extension Director, Cameron Lowe. Cameron shares her memories of growing up in 4-H and her time spent in the Extension office as a client in the 80s and 90s and as director today.
