This episode is a recording from a Special Needs Trust (SNT) seminar that I do a few times per year.

I find a lot of families know trusts exist, but don't know how they can apply to you or what kind you need. There are so many different kinds of trusts, but today we will focus on Special Needs Trusts and how they can fit into your financial plan.

This is not something I can do for you professionally, as trusts have to be established by a licensed attorney. However, as a financial advisor, estate planning is a big focus during our planning process and is well worth the conversation. SNTs are important because they hold money on behalf of a beneficiary without messing up their government benefits, which is crucial when planning for our loved ones with special needs.

A trust is one puzzle piece that can bring some piece of mind to the very tough question: "What happens to my child if I pass away?"

This is an interview from back in July 2021 where I spoke to the entire Board of Directors of the The Down Syndrome Association of Wisconsin-La Crosse (DSAW) Chapter.

During this episode, the members share some of their personal experiences with Down Syndrome. It really explains how DSAW began and why they spend time educating their community.

This is a great group of people doing even greater things in La Crosse: constantly raising money & educating. They focus on the public as well as professionals. Before COVID, they had a specialist come out the La Crosse for a seminar to educate local doctors about Down Syndrome & how to deliver the diagnosis to a family who has a child with Down Syndrome.

I am excited to do more work with this group in the future.

Ever heard of the six main areas of finance? Many people haven’t either. Do you have system to organize your financial life? Would you like to learn one? Join us for a conversation on how to use a simple 6 “bucket” system to help you know what you have done, and what you need to work on.

Whenever we meet with anyone, we work to establish two things in our first meeting.

  1. What topics do you want to be sure we discuss before you leave today?

  2. How can we establish a common ground from which we can always communicate?

To us, common ground is our "Bucket Talk".  We aren't here to use acronyms or $10 words.  We are here to make we can communicate with you in a way that gives you confidence in your financial plan.  Our work together is about what we can accomplish together and creating a language we both understand is the start of every great financial plan.

This podcast episode is a virtual presentation I recently did on Letters of Intent (LOI)

A Letter of Intent is created to help take care of your child based on their specific wants and needs. It describes everything from favorite toys, foods, specific routines, ways to communicate and everything in between.

These letters are created for the same reason you would create a Will or Trust - to take care of your loved one when you are no longer around (when the current parent(s) and/or guardian(s) suddenly pass away). While LOI's are not legal documents, they are one of the most important documents you can create when planning for your family with special needs members.

When the unthinkable happens, it is extremely beneficial that the new guardian has detailed guidance on how to take care of your child the way you would. What they like and don't like is something the new guardian may have to learn for themselves without it. Writing this letter is a heavy lift and possibly not the most fun task, but it is important. It is part of our planning process as we develop a lifelong care plan for your child.

This episode is one of our virtual seminars - Strategies for ABLE Accounts: What, How & Who.

We get into the details of the ABLE account and why you should consider adding it into your financial plan.

ABLE stands for Achieving a Better Life Experience and it was created in 2014, so it is fairly new. Today there are ABLE accounts within most states, but not every state has their own ABLE account, so be sure to check if your state has its own ABLE Account because you may be eligible for a tax deduction if it does. It is an extremely useful tool for individuals with disabilities and their families. It allows you to save and grow investments tax free, as long as the money is used for qualified expenses, while continuing to qualify and collect government benefits.

While it is a wonderful tool and easy to sign up for, it does have a few rules that you need to follow, such as: how much you can you save while continuing to receive government benefits, who qualifies, who owns the account, and qualified expenses from the account.
