I. The agony of the cup (vv. 39-46)II. The betrayal of the kiss (vv. 47-53)Life Applications:1. Pray honestly, submissively, knowledgeably, and persistently about your sorrows andstruggles.
Take the wrath of God for sin as seriously as Jesus did in Gethsemane.
Praise, thank, and trust Jesus who chose to submit to suffering for the sake of sinners like us.
Esther 4:4-17 | Ps. Sam Beck
One Thing: We must make the personal decision to live as God’s people.
I. Be Confident in God
A. Be Confident in His Grace
B. Be Confident in His Sovereignty
II. Be Surrendered to God
A. Be Surrendered to Face Death for Him
B. Be Surrendered to Live Life for Him
III. Be Dependent on God
A. Depend on Him in Community
B. Depend on Him as You Step Out in Faith
Depend on Jesus Christ for faith in our failing and strength in our testing.
Remember the Lamb’s sacrifice as we receive the Lord’s Supper.
1) Judas gave in to betrayal by his half-hearted devotion (vv.1-6)
2) Jesus gave us the Lord’s Supper to remember our key relationships, together
(vv.7-20)
3) The Lamb of God was devoted to give up his life no matter the
Though the end is coming, do not fear;
for Jesus is coming, redemption is near
I. Jesus foretells the near future: the destruction of Jerusalem (vv. 5-24)
II. Jesus foretells the far future: his second coming (vv. 25-28)
Luke 21:1-4
One Thing: Jesus values the heart behind our giving MORE than the size of our gifts
I. Jesus sees our giving (vv. 1- 2)
II. Jesus values the heart behind our giving (vv. 3 - 4)
What does our giving reveal about our hearts?
(1) What we truly love.
(2) Who our faith is truly in.
(3) Where our hope truly is.
How should we give?
(1) Proportionately (2) Generously (3) Cheerfully
Jesus is greater than we think, but we’re not as great as we think.
I. Jesus is greater than we think (vv. 41- 44)
II. We’re not as great as we think (vv. 45 - 47)
Three potential ways hypocrisy can look for us:
We pretend not to struggle.
We act differently at home, church, and work.
We have different standards for ourselves and others.
Let’s live by faith in the resurrection age to come.
1. The Sadducees denied and ridiculed the resurrection (vv. 27-33)
2. Jesus clarified and defended the resurrection (vv. 34-40)
Secure your heart onto the strong foundation of God’s Word.
How God’s Word is our strong foundation:1. God’s Word is firmly fixed forever beyond all generations (vv.89-91)
God’s Word deepens our delight beyond all afflictions (vv.92-95)
God’s Word is perfect and powerful beyond all limitations (v.96)
Luke 1:67-79 | Praise God for the multifaceted gift of salvation that we have in Jesus.
I. Zechariah blesses God for saving his people through Jesus (vv. 67-75)
II. Zechariah blesses his son John for preparing the way for Jesus (vv. 76-79)
Seven facets of the gift of salvation that we have in Jesus:
Submit to governing authorities
as part of submitting everything to God’s authority.
I. Jesus is asked an “either-or” question (vv. 19-22)
II. Jesus gives a “both-and” response (vv. 23-26)
What does it look like for us to submit to governing authorities as part of submitting everything to God’s authority?
Pray for governing authorities
Pay your taxes
Obey the law
Share the gospel and make disciples
Three of God’s purposes for governing authorities:
• To administer the justice required for protecting human life
• To enable people to fulfill the cultural mandate (“be fruitful and
multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over
[it]”)
• To provide a stable context for God’s people to share the gospel
and make disciples
Submit to Jesus for he is the Son of God
who acts in the authority of God.
I. The religious leaders question Jesus’ authority (19:47-20:2)
II. Jesus answers with a question (20:3-8)
III. Jesus answers with a parable (20:9-18)
"When King Jesus returns, he will expect a return"
I. King Jesus has expectations for his servants (vv. 11-14)
II. King Jesus has rewards for the faithful (vv. 15-19)
III. King Jesus has punishment for the unfaithful (vv. 20-27)
3 Suggestions to Point Others to Jesus:
Faith in Jesus means following him even when we don’t understand nor see everything.
Faith in Jesus means trusting the one who understands everything (vv.31-34)
Faith in Jesus means persevering in crying out to Jesus as King(vv.35-42)
III. Faith in Jesus means choosing to follow him over other things (v.43)
Luke 18:15-30
Receive the kingdom of God like a helpless child to receive eternal life in Jesus Christ.
I. Do not hinder the children from receiving the kingdom of God (vv.15-17, 21)II. Do not let your money hinder you from receiving the kingdom of God(vv.18-25, cf. 16)III. Trust in Jesus to overcome all our hindrances and enter the kingdom of God(vv.26-30)
I. Remember God’s grace that calls us to Christ (vv. 1-9)1. Find your ultimate sense of belonging in Christ- Word to non-believers2. Remember God’s grace daily
II. We are called to Christ together (vv. 10-17)1. Be bold in your love for others- Romans 15:7 (ESV), “Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.- Insiders and outsiders2. Pray for the unity of the church
God does not justify those who trust in themselves but those who trust in Him alone.
I. The Prayer of the Pharisee (vv. 9-12)
II. The Prayer of the Tax Collector (vv. 13-14)
As you wait, do not despair; but in faith, persist in prayer.
I. The parable of the unjust judge and persistent widow (vv. 1-5)
II. Two motivations for persistent prayer (vv. 6-8a)
III. One challenging question about our faith (v. 8b)
As King Jesus has already come to make us his own, trust that he will surely return to take us home.
1) The Kingdom of God is “already here” because the King has come to us (vv.20-21)
2) The Kingdom of God is “not yet here” because the Son of Man will return (vv.22-37)
When Jesus returns:
It will not be a secret (vv.23-24)
It will be sudden and severe (vv.26-30)
He will judge all hearts (vv.31-37)
He will take his people home (vv.25, 34-35)
Give to Jesus all thanks and praise for he is our merciful Healer who saves.
1) Jesus came to die for those who are hopeless (v.11)2) Jesus gives mercy to those who are helpless (vv.12-14)3) Jesus warns those who are thankless (vv.15-18)4) Jesus saves so he deserves praise that is endless (v.19)
As unworthy servants, our honorable duty is to help one another serve our worthy Lord.
I. The What: We have a serious responsibility to one another (vv. 1-4)II. The How: We have the faith needed to obey (vv. 5-6)
III. The Why: We are unworthy servants merely doing our duty (vv. 7-10)
How we respond to God’s Word in this temporary life will decide where we spend our eternal afterlife.
I. The temporary nature of this life (vv. 19-22)
II. The eternal nature of the afterlife (vv. 23-26)
III. The sufficient nature of God’s Word (vv. 27-31)
Live out the heart of God’s law with a “forceful faith” in Jesus Christ.
1) What God’s law does:
God’s Law sets his standard and exposes our sin (v.14)
2) What the law does not do:
The Law motivates right behavior but does not fix our bad hearts (v.15)
3) What the Gospel does:
The Gospel satisfies the Law, preaches grace, and calls sinners to “forceful faith” (v.16)
4) What we must strive to do:
Live out the heart of God’s law (in money and marriage) (vv.17-18)
Sinners get lost in different ways, but God pursues them with His grace.
The 1st lost son
1) The younger son’s worldliness leads to emptiness
2) The father’s grace and mercy lead to life
The 2nd lost son
3) The older son’s self-righteousness leads to anger
4) The father’s grace and mercy lead to joy
Rejoice with Jesus as he receives lost sinners and leads us to repentance. 1) Self-righteous people grumble at Jesus’ welcoming grace for sinners (vv.1-2) 2) Jesus gladly receives sinners because he diligently seeks them out (vv.3-4, 8) 3) Jesus invites sinners to enter into his joy through repentance (vv.7, 10)
Gratefully accept the gracious invitation and invite others to God’s great banquet of salvation.
1) God graciously made everything ready for salvation and invited many 2) Those invited foolishly made excuses not to come in the end 3) The gospel powerfully makes us see our need and God’s desire to save
Believe in Jesus Christ, count the cost of following Him, and persevere till the very end.
1) A true disciple believes in Jesus Christ
2) A true disciple counts the cost of following Jesus Christ
3) A true disciple perseveres till the very end
Let’s humble ourselves before others as Jesus humbled himself for us.
Jesus exposes our pride
Jesus teaches us his standard of true humility
Jesus guides us to live humbly
Take refuge in Jesus Christ willingly for he alone is our Savior and security.
Two lessons about our security in Christ: 1) Our security is in our Savior’s firm determination to die for undeserving sinners (vv.31-33) 2) Our security is in our Savior’s tender desire for unwilling sinners (vv.34-35)
Make room for the King of glory
The Creator King
Approaching the King
Welcoming the King
Praise Jesus the King who’s powerful yet compassionate & his Kingdom that’s glorious yet humble.
What is the King of God’s Kingdom like? Jesus the King is powerful yet compassionate
What are the rulers of worldly kingdoms like? They can be legalistic and unloving
What is the Kingdom of God like? Jesus’ Kingdom is glorious yet
humble
Strive for the narrow door of salvation, by faith in Jesus, without delay and without assumption.
1) We must strive in our salvation 2) We must not delay in the offer of salvation 3) We must not assume our salvation
Turn to God in repentance because he is just in his judgment and merciful in his
patience.
1) It is wrong to think God punishes some sinners with life’s tragedies
2) It is right for all sinners to perish because of our sin
3) It is the gospel that fulfills God’s justice and mercy to save us
Make the right and reasonable judgment: Be justified by faith in Jesus or be judged by him for your sins.
Three ways to make the right and reasonable judgment:
1) By using our natural ability from God
2) By addressing our hypocrisy before God
3) By believing Jesus justifies sinners freely as the Son of God
We can grow and go in faith when we believe that Jesus’ true peace brings division. (Luke 12: 49-53)
We must be ready when our Lord Jesus returns.
Stay awake because the Lord will serve his watching servants when he returns
Stay faithful because the Lord has entrusted his servants with his household until he returns
Stay sober because the Lord will punish unfaithful servants as unbelievers when he returns
An important way to be on the right track towards our vision to "Rediscover Church" in 2022 is to learn directly from Jesus. We rediscover who we are as Christ's church gathered and scattered by rediscovering who Jesus is: his life, teaching, values and relationships that culminated his crucifixion and resurrection.
In this series, "Rediscover Jesus," we will study the Gospel of Luke from chapter 12, which recorded the Lord's public ministry in the area of Galilee. This will be for Christians to learn directly from Jesus about what it means to be his disciples living together as a church. This will also be for others- like former church-goers, people from other religions, or non-religious people- to discover Jesus for the first time.

For this year's easter service, Pastor John preached over John 20:1-31, with the one thing: See for yourself that Jesus is the resurrected Christ, and believe in him to have eternal life. Three lessons on faith in Jesus from his resurrection:1) Faith in Jesus must be secured to his Word (vv.8-10)2) Faith in Jesus is strengthened by his peace (vv.17, 19-21)3) Faith in Jesus, to deepen through doubts, requires his grace (vv.29-31)
For our Good Friday service this year, Pastor John preached over John 19:1-30. With the one thing for the sermon: "Surrender your all to Jesus, the King of All, for he surrendered his authority to die for us.". The three main characters dealing with authority at the crucifixion:1) Pilate selfishly abused his God-given authority.2) The Jews rebelliously rejected God as their authority.3) Our Savior King humbly surrendered his authority.
This week's sermon, our guest pastor, Pastor John Freiberg preached over the book of Nahum.

About This EpisodeAs we are currently in the midst of Advent, let’s prepare our hearts for the commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ, our Saviour, and what it means for us as His followers. As we gather with loved ones throughout this month, the best way to love them is to actually love Jesus so much more.
As Jesus calls us to love others sacrificially as He loved us sacrificially, this challenges us to continue to love those around us even when they’re not very easy to love. ’Tis the season!
About This Sermon Series
An important way to be on the right track towards our vision to "Rediscover Church" in 2022 is to learn directly from Jesus. We rediscover who we are as Christ's church gathered and scattered by rediscovering who Jesus is: his life, teaching, values and relationships that culminated his crucifixion and resurrection.
In this series, "Rediscover Jesus," we will study the Gospel of Luke from chapters 4-9, which recorded the Lord's public ministry in the area of Galilee. This will be for Christians to learn directly from Jesus about what it means to be his disciples living together as a church. This will also be for others- like former church-goers, people from other religions, or non-religious people- to discover Jesus for the first time.

Polity deals with the important question of how we as Christians should organize our lives together in local churches.
In this three-part series, “Polity,” we’ll look at Scripture to understand how the ordinances (baptism and the Lord’s Supper) are signs of membership and mutual commitment to one another, what the officers (elders and deacons) are to be and do, and how authority is to be exercised for decision-making in the local church.

Over the last two years during this pandemic, it has been easy to disengage and disappear from the church and it’s been difficult for the church to live out what it means to be the church gathered and scattered for the glory of God. This is an opportunity to “rediscover” who we are as HMCC and what Christ calls us to be and do as his church.

This is a four-part Advent (or Christmas) sermon series. “Advent” refers to the coming of Christ, which is what Christmas celebrates. “Emmanuel” means “God with us,” which is what Jesus was to be called, for he is God with us.
In the first Christmas, all of creation, and especially God's people, anticipated the coming of Christ. So in this four-part Advent sermon series throughout December, we will unpack the ways we can anticipate Jesus' advent this season as well in wondering, welcoming, worshiping, and waiting.
Especially in light of the difficulties the world has faced throughout the pandemic, the birth of Jesus into the world gives us unending hope. So as we enter into this season of Christmas, let’s invite our family and friends to Sunday Celebration and look for opportunities to share this hope that we have in Christ.
