Axioms: Prayer is a Ministry // Cody Carroll"We want our students to pray and pray often. We believe that prayer is taking action, just as much as discipleship and reading our Bibles. We pray students would not see prayer as a chore in the Christian life, but a ministry in and of itself."
College Gathering - September 13, 2022Axioms: 99% in the light is still in the dark // Brandon Gilbert"We want our students to desire to live lives of active repentance. We pray that they will be honest in their communities and with us about all their sin -- not just the easy or convenient ones to confess, but that this confession will be an overflow of their deep belief in the overwhelming mercy and grace of the Father."
College Gathering - September 6, 2022Axioms: No one sits alone. No one stands alone. // Brandon Gilbert"We want Redeemer College to be an inclusive family, where anyone who walks in our doors feels wanted, seen, and known. We pray that our students take initiative at every opportunity to sit with someone alone and stand with someone alone, in order to invite them into our family."
College Gathering Fall Kickoff 2022Axioms: Faithful Over Impressive // Brandon Gilbert"We want our students to desire to live a life of faithfulness in the small over living a life splattered with a few grandiose moments. We pray that our students would recognize that faithfulness is a consistent mark of Jesus, and thus they would value the small just as much as the big."
College Gathering - 3/29/22 - Justin Smith - The God we worship is incredibly kind, generous, and gracious. But sometimes we take God’s kindness for granted, forgetting that He is God and we are not. Join us as Justin reminds us who God is and why we should live our lives with reverence for Him! // “To approach God in any other way than through Jesus is not only dangerous, but deadly.”
College Gathering - 3/8/22 - Cody Carroll - Life is filled with seasons : some we love living and some we want to fast forward right through. And one of the big questions we ask in the midst of these seasons is about the purpose of it all. Join us as Cody helps us think through the beauty of each season and understand how the book of Ecclesiastes helps us to navigate the purpose of them all . // “God has put something in the DNA of every human that makes us aware that there is something more to this life than what we can see.”
College Gathering - 3/1/22 - Ryan Perkins - Death is a reality that we all have to face … and so is the living we do before it. Join us as Ryan continues our journey through the book of Ecclesiastes and asks the hard questions about choosing real life over simple pleasure, enjoying the good gifts of life, and the joys of truly living in the dash. // “But pleasure always demands more pleasure, and as you keep trying to draw from these wells, you realize the more you run into them the more they take from you.”
College Gathering - 2/22/22 - Brandon Gilbert - What does it look like to have everything you could ever want … and still be unsatisfied? As we enter into the book of Ecclesiastes, we see what this practically looks like in the life of a man who had it all, and still found a desire for there to be more. Join us as Brandon kicks off this book of exploration of the world and purpose, and challenges us to evaluate what we are moving towards. // “Everything else is a treadmill -- evaluate your life, loosen your grip, then see how you respond and embrace the Gospel ... it will cause you to enjoy life and run hard for something that will last.”
College Gathering - 2/15/22 - Brandon Gilbert - There are many things we look to in order to feel secure, significant, and seen – these are counterfeit gods. In this series we are exploring the four source idols (or gods) that are at the root of our sin. If you find yourself constantly avoiding rejection, changing yourself to fill the perceived “needs” of a group, or being fearful of the opinions of those around you, you might just struggle with the counterfeit god of Approval. Join us as Brandon dives into this idol of Approval, and explains why Approval is a temporary, fleeting God, and points us to a much better one. // “God created the men and women with a desire to know and be known – this is a good thing. But we are supposed to find our identity and approval in who HE says we are.”
College Gathering - 2/8/22 - Justin Smith - There are many things we look to in order to feel secure, significant, and seen – these are counterfeit gods. In this series we are exploring the four source idols (or gods) that are at the root of our sin. If you find yourself consistently avoiding any type of pain and discomfort, struggling to maintain discipline, or prone to boredom, you might just struggle with the counterfeit god of Comfort. Join us as Justin dives into this idol of Comfort, and explains why Comfort is a temporary, fleeting God, and points us to a much better one. // “The fact is, to live a life in pursuit of comfort above all else, is to ensure that you never become who God created you to be.”
College Gathering - 2/1/22 - Brandon Gilbert - There are many things we look to in order to feel secure, significant, and seen – these are counterfeit gods. In this series we are exploring the four source idols (or gods) that are at the root of our sin. If you find yourself consistently striving to manage or control circumstances, a slave to self-discipline, or prone to worry, fear, and frustration, you might just struggle with the counterfeit god of Control. Join us as Brandon dives into this idol of control, and explains why Control is a temporary, fleeting God, and points us to a much better one. // “The greatest longing I had was that I had a plan, and I wanted everything to go according to that plan… but a plan that seems right in the eyes of man, in the end just seems to destroy everybody.”
College Gathering - 1/25/22 - Brandon Gilbert - There are many things we look to in order to feel secure, significant, and seen – these are counterfeit gods. In this series we are exploring the four source idols (or gods) that are at the root of our sin. If you are constantly looking to be significant or wanting to be not just good but the best or are prone to anger, you might just struggle with the counterfeit god of Power. Join us as Brandon dives into the signs of this idol of Power, explains why Power is a terrible god, and points us to the better God. // “An idol is whatever you look at and say, in your heart of hearts, ‘If I have that, then I’ll feel my life has meaning, then I’ll know I have value, then I’ll feel significant and secure.’ “
College Gathering - 11/16/21 - Brandon Gilbert - As we end the book of James, we see James urging his audience to pray -- in suffering, in praise, in desperate asking, in confession. But what does this really look like? And what is the true purpose of prayer? Join us as Brandon digs into James 5:13-20 to clarify what prayer truly is (and isn’t) and why our desire to pray is actually a clear indication of the state of our hearts. // “Prayer is not a timid act. I think so often my prayer life is weak because I don’t want to be disappointed when I ask for things and they go “unanswered”. This is a completely wrong view of God and His sovereignty.”
College Gathering - 11/9/21 - Madison Ruppert - The Kingdom of God is here and yet, the Kingdom of God is coming -- both of these statements have incredible implications on our lives. Join us as Madison looks to James 4:13-5:12 for these Kingdom definitions, these Kingdom implications, and the hope that these Kingdoms bring. // “This man realized something that this almost 2,000-year-old letter by James teaches so clearly: that weighty, eternal matters put everything else into perspective.”
College Gathering - 11/2/21 - Justin Smith - Both the World and the Word have a form of wisdom. They both inform and transform who you are and what you value. Join us as Justin dives into James 3:13-4:12, to talk through three major areas of intake, how these can form you (to the world or the the word), and help you ask the question, “What is forming me? The world or the Word?”. // “Rather than ask the question, “Is this sinful?” we should ask the better question : “Who am I becoming?”
College Gathering - 10/26/21 - Brandon Gilbert - Words are powerful, rhetoric speaks intention, and our verbiage can say what is truly in our hearts. But does God care more about the correction of speech, or the way that our speech reflects our hearts? And if we are called to tame our tongue, how do we do this on more than a behavior level? Join us as Brandon discusses the way that words impact our hearts and the way our hearts impact our words. // “The reality James is laying before us is that words have great power - however, the aim is not that we just talk better but instead to understand the reality that those words and the self-preservation motivates them come from somewhere.”
College Gathering - 10/19/21 - Keenan Harris - We see James state that faith and works save, but other parts of the Bible say that faith alone saves…what do we do with this contradiction? And what could James mean by works? Is it just good behavior, right knowledge, and good intentions or is it more? Join us as Keenan answers these questions, and teaches us that “obvious contradictions” in the Bible actually teach us more about the character of God! // “I’m not saying that we should just be obedient robots without feelings, but if we are looking at our feelings or our intentions as evidence for our faith or whether or not we obey, we have got it all wrong.”
College Gathering - 10/12/21 - Brandon Gilbert - What is the balance between inaction and legalism? And what is the demand of those who are followers of Jesus? Join Brandon as calls out Christian hypocrisy and dives into James 1:19 - 2:13 to discuss the difference between work for salvation and work from salvation. // The danger is that we have heard over and over again and there is no movement toward Jesus, it is either apathy or obstinance ... and we deceive ourselves into thinking we are something that we are not.”
College Gathering - 10/5/21 - Brandon Gilbert - Temptation is not from God, it is our own broken desires -- to give into temptation is to "give birth" to death instead of life and new creation. God wants the latter for you. Join us as Brandon teaches through James 1:12-18, addressing temptation, sin, and how they interact in times of tribulation. // “Left to my own devices I will always choose the temporary and be trapped by the temptation but that is not the end - God offers us something greater.”
College Gathering - 9/28/21 - Justin Smith - What is the point of our life? Wealth? Safety? Ourselves? Join us as Justin digs into James 1:1-11, and argues that it actually is to be made more like Jesus. // “You can take a good thing and turn it into something that becomes a distraction that divides your devotion to Jesus.”
College Gathering - 9/21/21 - Brandon Gilbert - Why should I trust the Church? If it is a place that is supposed to be safe and emulate Jesus, why has it caused hurt, confusion, and suffering? And what does it mean to be part of the Church? Join us as Brandon answers these questions and explains the beauty of the gathering of believers. // “We believe that it is not accident that we are here and that God has positioned the church for this cultural moment”
College Gathering - 9/15/21 - Brandon Gilbert - If God is good, how can he allow evil and suffering to exist? Is there really a purpose to suffering? Join us as Brandon answers these questions and reframes the way that we can relate to /understand suffering and evil. // “When we experience suffering, we should not think it strange -- the Bible promises that we will suffer, but also that he will triumph over our suffering.”
College Gathering - 9/7/21 - Justin Smith - What are Heaven and Hell? And how can God be “good” if he sends people to a place like hell? Join Justin as he dismantles the traditional ideas of Heaven and Hell by walking through the narrative of Scripture and the common misconceptions we have been taught. // “We brought Hell to Earth. Jesus is bringing Heaven to Earth and God is getting Hell out of Earth.”
College Gathering - 8/31/21 - Brandon Gilbert - Can I trust the Bible? And why should I? Join us as Brandon walks through 2 Timothy 3:16 - 4:5 to answer these questions. // “The Bible won’t answer all the questions you want it to. But it will show you the right questions to ask.”
College Gathering - 8/24/21 - Brandon Gilbert - What is the Gospel and what does it mean for my life? Join us as Bradon works through Ephesians 2:1-10 to answer this question. // “The Gospel is good news that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died for our sins and rose again, eternally triumphant, so that there is now no condemnation for those who believe, but only everlasting joy “
