We are back for Season 5! Season 4 honestly was not our best year, but we all have our ups and downs, but we must push on!

This season we have lined up some really great shows. We’ve lined up some funny, interesting and much smarter people to talk with rather than ourselves. We’ll talk physical and mental health, retirement planning, and what we are planning for the backyard next summer, as well as more insights to the hectic, chaotic but loving Tomlinson home.

We begin with a new series that we like to call Messages To Our Kids. Our kids are grown and out the house- save for one and our soon to be gran….oh yeah…thats news to that we will get into later…but sometimes they are older than all of us.

These are short messages of motivation, encouragement, love, guidance and witty insights that we have learned along the way. We hope you enjoy them as much as we enjoy thinking of them and telling our kids. If you find them useful please use them as well. Never stop learning and always be mindful. So buckle up buttercups get the bottles ready and hold on for Season 5 of Cocktails and TableTalk!

Robert Smalls was born a slave in 1839, in Beaufort, South Carolina. During the Civil War in 1861, Robert Smalls was part of the enslaved crew on a ship called the Planter, operating in Charleston Harbor. The owners of the ship contracted the vessel out to the Confederate army as a transport ship, and Smalls found himself as a pilot on board the ship. In early 1862, the Confederacy had achieved numerous battlefield victories, and it seemed as if the quest to create an independent slaveholders’ republic might succeed. Robert Smalls decided not to wait and find out. He devised a plan to free not only himself, but his family as well.

Inventor Fred Jones’ contributions during his lifetime were momentous and can be felt to this day. A self-taught and naturally gifted mechanic, Jones invented a portable air-conditioning unit for trucks in 1938. This unit could be used to preserve perishable foods during transport, and the patents Jones was awarded for the product led to the formation of the Thermo King Corporation. His inventions were vital during WWII when they were used to transport blood and medicine to battlefields and hospitals.

Some of his over 60 patents:

U.S. Patent 2,581,956 was issued on January 8, 1952 – For a refrigeration control device.

U.S. Patent 2,666,298 was issued on January 19, 1954 – Methods and means of defrosting a cold diffuser.

U.S. Patent 2,696,086 was issued on December 7, 1954 – Method and means for air conditioning.

U.S. Patent 2,780,923 was issued on February 12, 1957 – A method and means for preserving perishable foodstuffs in transit.

U.S. Patent 2,850,001 was issued on September 2, 1958 – For a control device for an internal combustion engine.

During this Black History Month, for the next, we are showcasing some of our lesser-known Black American heroes. They may be lesser known not because of their lack of contribution but because their exploits were never taught in history class. Sit back, relax, and listen to how these Americans triumphed against unbelievable odds to become leaders not only in the African American community but national leaders in their own right.

While many were taught that Rosa Parks was the first to famously refuse to give up a bus seat. However, nine months before her 1943 protest in Montgomery, Alabama, then fifteen-year-old Claudette Colvin was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a standing white woman after school. Colvin was then forcibly removed from the bus and arrested, but would later go on to be one of the principal plaintiffs in the Supreme Court case Browder vs. Gayle, which declared bus segregation unconstitutional under the fourteenth amendment.

Ok, it’s year 3 of working from home. But now it has gone from 100% to about 20%-30% at home. I have found myself less motivated to get up and go out to work, but I know I need to. Working from home has become more of a distraction than a blessing- at least to me. Last semester I started going to the office 2 days a week because I had some classes to teach. So when I got to stay home, I was a little more productive with my work life as well as my home life, and any little running around I needed to do- cleaners, supermarket, hmmm liquor store…I could do it and get back to work.

I genuinely believe the hybrid mode of working works better for people. You should be able to balance your work and home life better. A happy and steady home makes for a productive work life, and the same goes for a happy work-life makes for a happier home life.

How has your schedule changed this year? Has it? How are you balancing work/life? Please put it in the comments below, and don’t forget to follow us on Facebook, and Instagram.

Ok, get back to work!

While looking for "Transformational" vegetable gardening tips on YouTube, I stumbled across this speaker. Cheryl Polote-Williamson considers herself a transformational speaker. What do you think is the difference between motivation and transformation? Do you always need some motivation to get certain things done, or do some things? Do you look for motivation in everything you do? How have you "transformed" yourself into who you are today? Are you transformed to the person you want to be? In our coffee talk, we discuss this. How do you all handle your mistakes? Work, family, etc. When you discover that you make one are you able to learn from it, change your approach, forgive yourself and move on, or do you get stuck obsessing over why it happened and why you didn’t make a better decision at the time?  Today we talk with a group of men that I know very well. We’ve been friends for over 40yrs. They are husbands, fathers, uncles, and brothers, they are successful in what they do. Leaders in their industry as well as leaders of men and women.  We only see what people choose to show us Everybody has had bad days and mistakes and failures The bad days are there to make the good days all the more worth it Don’t beat yourself up for making the mistake, beat yourself up for not learning from them, and not moving on from it.  There was a question asked about whether or not race plays a role in anything. I think as black men that question always comes up even if it was not part of the scenario, because of how we are as a society and how we know we are seen in various situations.

Hi, Fans!

We decided to try something new and fun for the month of August. A movie poll!! Well, it's a little bit different. For the month of August you are trusted listeners and sippers will vote on your favorite movies from the years 1985-1988, on a side note, these are my high school years, which I thought had some of the greatest* movies of all time. Some may have not been well received back then, but they have become classics over the years. Starting Monday, August 1 the first 5 of 20 movies will be unveiled to vote on. Each week is a different year. At the end of each week, there will be a trivia question based on the week's movie, and the first person to contact us will WIN....YES WIN A FREE GIFT FROM US. So listen in or follow us on Instagram for the daily poll. Good luck! Let's have some fun!

Aristotle said, "the law is reason, free from passion." This basically means that the law is meant to be followed in order to uphold certain standards set by government and society, and there should be no room for personal feelings or obsessions that are based on those feelings.

In other words, you cannot allow personal prejudices or subjective interpretations to interfere with the dispensation of the law.

Or is it?

In the course of this countries’ 245 years of existence, one of the youngest countries in the world by the way-

Since 1789 we have had somewhat over 11,00 amendments proposed at amending our Constitution and actually amended it 27 times. There is a clause in the Constitution that provides instruction on how to propose and amend an amendment. Does the fact that we have changed laws mean that the law is not based on reason because reason does not change? It does not become outdated, but is it based on the “winds of societal fever”?

Hey TableTalkers!

It’s almost that time of year again! And you know what that means? Our Holiday Show. This year we will have friends and family on to discuss our very busy year, what we did, what we didn’t do, and what we are looking forward to next year.

But we have 2 special shows coming up. First, we will talk to Ed Salcedo and Gil Parris two attorneys who will give us some insight into where the law is today.

Aristotle said that the law is reason and free from passion. Is it? or does it blow in whatever political winds of change are occurring at the time?

Then we have a fun episode: Star Wars and Star Trek!

We’ll have some fans of the iconic series talk about why they love the movies, and which they think is better

Then, you'll help us pick our new podcast theme song for the upcoming season.

So join us this and lots more.

So grab a seat and get a drink with Cocktails and TableTalk

I have been reading Mediations by Emp Marcus Aurelius, and relearning the teachings of Stoicism and I always come across a quote or a thought by the great stoics that really resonate with me, especially on whatever I may be doing or going through at that time. Yesterday I came across this one by Seneca:

“If a man knows not to which port he sails, no wind is favorable.”

This is so true, if we have set no goals, or no focus or direction in life, any wind that blows is going to get us nowhere, because we how will we know we got there if we did not know where we were going?

Sometimes we are called to do something and we don't know where it will lead us, this is true. However, I think in life we need some sort of direction, of a goal, a final destination.

Thoughts?

Enjoy

Now Go Back To Work!!

How does one define manliness? What are the virtues of being a man today?

Merriam-Webster defines manliness as the quality or state of being manly (as by having qualities such as strength or virility that are traditionally associated with a man)

The English word “virtue” comes from the Latin word virtus, which meant manliness or masculine strength. The Romans believed that to be manly, a man had to cultivate virtues like courage, temperance, and industry.

Is there an image of what manliness is supposed to be?

Has it changed over the years?

Join us on the next Cocktails and TableTalk as we discuss what some are saying is an archaic and obsolete reference to an out-of-date identification.

We would be wrong not to comment on the events of January 6, 20201. Where the very symbol of our Democracy was attacked by domestic terrorists. Though the investigations are still ongoing, what is known now is shocking, and appalling. Our show, though light-hearted, we do try to touch upon subjects that are important and that have a greater effect on the world we live in. This event was too important not to comment on. I am a teacher of political science and of American history. What we have witnessed on January 6th, and what we are seeing now, will have dire consequences for our future if we do not learn and change the mistakes that we have made.

Thank you
