They want to “be the change,” then realize what they’re up against: their own family and friends who see them as "sold out", and a police culture with a legacy of prejudice, protected by unions, resistant to self-examination,andprimedto use force. I sat down with two black officers to have their takes and perspectives on these issues, but most importantly, the solutions they suggest to help normalize the relationships between law enforcement agents and the communities they pledged to serve and protect.
