On this episode we talk to Lulu Mutuli, a Kenyan frontend developer at a publishing company in London, with a background in Fashion Design. She is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, and lived in New York City for a year after graduation to look for work. She has worked with brands such as Rhie and OMONDI as well as been a personal stylist at Comptoir de Cotonniers. She moved back to Nairobi in 2016 and joined an incubator programme funded by DANIDA and Designing Africa Collective to create a ready to wear collection with the goal of retailing in the Designing Africa Collective store. Her collection followed an Afro futurist theme that carried over from my Senior Collection, named AfroGlitch. She debuted this work under the mentorship of the programme with a brand name AMILO, which subsequently led her to apply for the Heineken African Inspired Fashion Competition which took herself and her fellow winner Azra Walji to Amsterdam to design the collection, and later to Lagos Fashion Week to Showcase the collection.
She decided to make a career switch soon after and jumped into Moringa School, a coding bootcamp in Nairobi to learn how to code. After 6 months she joined the workforce and worked for a startup called JENGA for a few months. She moved to Singapore briefly and then moved back to Nairobi during 2020, and recently relocated to London.
