Porn and The Gospel: Recent Episodes

Spencer Sutton

For the Christian man, pornography use is at an all-time high. The most recent statistics indicate that 51% of all Americans seek out porn. And even though 80% of pastors believe porn use is a massive issue in their church, only 7% say they have a way to help men who desire to live a life of purity.

This podcast is for brothers in Christ who are struggling with porn and want to walk in sexual purity. We will explore how the Gospel destroys sexual sin and how a Christian man can leave the shame and guilt of habitual porn use behind and enjoy fellowship with Christ and live a life of purpose.

This is a Natural Porn Killer podcast.

Every man's struggle with sexual sin is different, but the road out is the same. In this episode I lay out the five markers of that road...

The valley of despair
The awakening
The long struggle
Transformation
Stewardship

Then I walk through Moses in Exodus 1–2: how he spent 40 years being shaped in Pharaoh's house, took things into his own hands, fled to the wilderness, and spent another 40 years being emptied of his false identity before God could use him. If you keep having victory and then falling again, if you're asking "why is this taking me so long," this one is for you. Transformation is real, it's God's work, and it's worth it...but there are no shortcuts to the peak.

What gets in the way when men fight pornography? In this episode, Spencer shares the five mistakes he sees most often after years of coaching and walking alongside men in this struggle: staying silent, looking for an easy solution, refusing to see it as all-out war, believing it will go away "when…," and failing to guard the heart with vigilance.

Along the way he draws on Scripture (1 John 1, Galatians 5, Romans 7–8, Proverbs 4, Psalm 78 and 108), the "funnel of fruitfulness," and hard-won lessons from his own life. He also folds in insights from other men he asked—including his son Grant—on identity, spiritual warfare, and the trap of chasing systems instead of Christ.

The takeaway: you're not strong enough on your own, and that's the point. Real freedom comes from throwing yourself fully on the grace and mercy of God.

Why do we keep giving in to the same sins? Because we've believed a lie. Spencer walks through Hebrews 11:13-19 and lands on one word: considered.

It's the same Greek word Paul uses in Romans 6:11 when he says "consider yourselves dead to sin." It means to take an inventory. To deliberately think through what's true.

Three things every man needs to consider daily. Then Spencer gets practical about what your time with God actually looks like, including a 6-layer funnel for engaging with Scripture.

I go straight at something I talk about with every man I walk with: you are at war. I start in 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 and unpack what Paul meant when he said our weapons aren't fleshly but carry divine power to destroy strongholds.

Then I tell a story from the San Diego Zoo that reframes the whole thing. Our tour guide pointed out that the zoo's lions had no scars, no hunger, no enemies. "Showcase lions," she called them. Born into ease. They'd die the same way. Wild lions? Shorter lives. Scarred bodies. But free. I draw the line: too many of us are living like caged lions, wanting comfort and calling it faithfulness. Peter says to arm yourself with the mind of Christ. And Christ's mind was simple: not my will, but yours. That's the weapon. That's the war.

Spencer reflects on a friend who called him nearly 100 days ago in crisis, and how that one act of raising his hand to say "I need help" changed everything. From there, Spencer looks at the Apostle Paul's prayers across his letters, specifically how often Paul asked others to pray for him. Three things emerge from Paul's prayer requests that every man needs to hear: the faith of Paul, the humility of Paul, and the mindset of Paul. Spencer walks through Old Testament and New Testament examples of answered prayer, shares what's been happening in his own weekly prayer group, and challenges listeners to examine whether they're using prayer as a wartime weapon or a domestic intercom.

Key Points* When men raise their hand and say "I need help," it's one of the most powerful and difficult things they can do. * Paul didn't just pray for others. He repeatedly, urgently asked others to pray for him. * The faith of Paul: He had studied, heard eyewitness accounts, and personally experienced the power of prayer (Moses, Abraham, Hannah, Elijah, Hezekiah, Solomon, Peter, Cornelius, his own conversion). * The humility of Paul: Even as the man writing most of the New Testament and seeing God do extraordinary things, he never put himself above needing prayer. * The mindset of Paul: He saw life as war and prayer as a weapon, not a comfort device. * Spencer shares how a simple text to his friend Olan ("Do you want to start getting together and praying once a week?") grew into a weekly Monday morning prayer gathering of five men, and the answered prayers that have followed. * Quotes from E.M. Bounds, Paul Miller, and John Piper on the nature and purpose of prayer.

In this episode of Porn and the Gospel, Spencer returns after a long break with a personal update about leaving Evernest and stepping back into work with neverthirst. He reflects on God’s providence, answered prayer, and the importance of walking in truth.

The main focus of the episode is simple: truth and prayer belong together. A life of secrecy, deceit, and hidden sin will hinder prayer, but walking in the light brings freedom, clarity, and joy in Christ.

Spencer encourages men struggling with pornography or habitual sin to stop hiding, tell the truth, come to God as helpless, and plead the blood of Christ. Freedom begins by stepping into the light and depending fully on the power of God.

Key Scriptures Mentioned* 1 Peter 4:7-11 . Be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers. * Romans 12:1-2 . Be transformed by the renewal of your mind. * Philippians 4:8 . Think on what is true.

In this episode of Porn and the Gospel, host Spencer Sutton invites brothers in Christ to take the first step on the ladder of blessing—becoming “poor in spirit.” Drawing from Matthew 5:3 and insights from Jerry Bridges, Charles Spurgeon, and Dane Ortlund, Spencer explores what true humility before God looks like for men striving for purity and holiness.

Through Scripture, reflection, and prayer, he reminds us that we cannot lead our families, workplaces, or ourselves without first surrendering our pride and acknowledging our spiritual poverty. This is where grace begins—and where real transformation takes root.

Key Takeaways Poverty of spirit is an attitude of the heart. True humility isn’t about behavior—it’s about posture before God. * God blesses the humble. He dwells with the contrite and revives the heart of the lowly (Isaiah 57:15). * Confession is freedom. Like the tax collector in Luke 18*, we come to God not with good works, but with open repentance. * Seeing God clearly reveals our need. When Isaiah saw the Lord, he said, “Woe is me!” before receiving cleansing and calling. * Humility magnifies grace. As Dane Ortlund writes, Christ is a billionaire in mercy—our dependence only deepens His display of grace. * Spiritual ambition and humility can coexist. Christ modeled both: total commitment to God’s mission and total lowliness of heart.

Scripture References* Matthew 5:2–3 — “Blessed are the poor in spirit…” * Deuteronomy 8:2 — God humbles to reveal what’s in our hearts. * Isaiah 57:15 — God dwells with the contrite and lowly. * Luke 18:11–14 — The Pharisee and the tax collector. * Isaiah 6:5 — “Woe is me, for I am lost.” * Philippians 4:13 — Contentment through Christ, not self-sufficiency.

Episode SummaryIn this episode of Porn and the Gospel, Spencer unpacks one piercing verse from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount — Matthew 5:20 — and shows how it cuts through our pride and performance to reach the real issue: the heart.

Jesus said, “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.”

Most of us try to fix our behavior — to stop looking at pornography, to clean up bad habits, to appear holy on the outside — while our hearts remain unchanged. But Jesus makes it clear: you can’t fake holiness or white-knuckle your way into purity. Only the Great Physician can perform the open-heart surgery your soul truly needs.

Through Scripture, honest reflection, and a story of a friend caught in adultery, Spencer reminds us that sin is subtle and deadly — like arteries slowly clogging — and that only surrender to Christ brings real change.

This isn’t about trying harder. It’s about laying your heart bare before God and letting Him do the deep, painful, yet loving work of transformation.

Key Scriptures* Matthew 5:20 — “Unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” * Philippians 1:6 — “He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

In this episode, we will dive deep into the events surrounding the assassination of Charlie Kirk — not just the headlines, but what believers can learn from his life, his faith, and his example.

Charlie Kirk wasn’t perfect (none of us are), but his clarity of purpose and devotion to Christ left a mark. From his candid admission of past struggles with pornography to his unwavering conviction that faith comes before politics, Charlie’s life points us toward something bigger: living every day with a North Star that glorifies God.

We'll walk through:

  • Why Charlie’s openness about past battles matters for men wrestling with sin
  • How purpose and calling give strength to overcome temptation
  • Why true faith always leads to righteous action, not passive religion
  • The descent, turning point, and ascent of Psalm 73 — and what it teaches us when evil seems to flourish
  • Why nearness to God is the only true cure for sin and despair

This is both a sober reflection and a rallying cry: don’t waste your life sitting on the sidelines. Draw near to God, take your eyes off the world, and live boldly for Christ.

Key Takeaways* Faith and Purpose Crush Sin: Freedom doesn’t come by willpower alone but through Christ and a clear sense of calling. * Psalm 73’s Lesson: The turning point comes when we stop comparing ourselves to others and fix our eyes on God. * Your Life Has to Count: We weren’t saved to coast into heaven on a “featherbed.” True faith produces works that glorify God. * Nearness to God Is the Cure: As Spurgeon said, “The greater our nearness to God, the less we are affected by the attractions and distractions of earth.”

Scripture Anchors* Matthew 28 — The Great Commission as our North Star * Psalm 73 — From envy and doubt to joy in God alone * James 2:17 — Faith without works is dead

Closing ChallengeStop living defensively. Stop hiding. Lift your eyes to God, draw near, and live with eternity in mind.

In this week’s raw and honest episode, we’re going deep. Deeper than porn. Deeper than behavior. This is about the heart and the eternal battle between comfort and calling.

You’ll hear a powerful story about Alexander the Great and how his army’s success became their greatest hindrance. And how that same pattern plays out in the lives of Christian men today. Spoils become shackles. Comfort becomes compromise. And sin, both obvious and subtle, keeps us from the race we were meant to run.

But we’re not left without an example. Jesus, the greater King, burned every worldly treasure to obey the will of the Father—and then called us to follow Him. Not to simply “go,” but to follow.

You’ll discover:

  • Why the call to follow Jesus means radical surrender
  • How to throw off the “weighted vest” of comfort and sin
  • A practical challenge to fix your eyes on Christ...not other Christians, not your Instagram feed, not your bank account
  • And a live invite to join a free workshop on biblical meditation (inside the Man of Valor community)

This is not about white-knuckling your way out of pornography. It’s about magnifying Christ and living for something that will never fade.

Mentioned in this episode:

  • The Alexander the Great story and spiritual parallel
  • Hebrews 12:1–4 | Philippians 2 | 1 Peter 2 | 2 Corinthians 8:9
  • Quotes from Charles Spurgeon
  • The “Murph Workout” analogy to carrying spiritual weight

Here's the truth:“You don’t need another strategy. You need surrender.”

In this episode, Spencer unpacks what the Word of God reveals about overcoming sin, walking by the Spirit, and living with power in a world designed to defeat you.

We start with a battle scene—one king, 580,000 soldiers… facing an army of over 1 million. And what unfolds becomes a divine blueprint for anyone locked in a fight they’re losing—especially the fight against porn, shame, guilt, and the flesh.

But this isn’t a sin-management strategy.
This is about warfare. Worship. Total surrender.

In This Episode, You’ll Discover: The 5 biblical steps to spiritual victory drawn from King Asa’s story * Why most men live powerless, defeated lives—and don’t even realize it * The subtle trap of chasing relief over relationship with Christ * Why “half-hearted” Christianity guarantees defeat * What it really means to “walk by the Spirit” in 2025 * How success in God’s eyes has nothing to do with streaks, stats, or milestones * The most honest prayer* you can pray as a man today

“You can’t drag your flesh behind you and expect to walk by the Spirit.”

“Men will do anything—buy anything—except the one thing Scripture commands: surrender.”

“If you’re not giving God your whole heart… just be okay with defeat.”

In this soul-stirring episode of Porn and the Gospel, Spencer dives deep into one of the boldest prayers ever recorded in Scripture—the moment Moses stood between God and a rebellious people and said, “Blot me out of your book.”

What gives a man such courage? What kind of intimacy with God allows you to pray not just for yourself—but with fire and urgency for others?

You’ll discover:

  • Why your freedom from sin is about God’s glory, not just your relief.
  • The missing link in most men’s prayer lives—and how to restore it.
  • Why habitual sin kills your concern for others—and how intercessory prayer breaks that cycle.
  • What Paul and Moses shared in common when they prayed.
  • A powerful, practical prayer from Ephesians 3 you can start praying today—for your wife, your brother, or even someone far from God.

Spencer brings Scripture, vulnerability, and a call to arms for every man who wants to go deeper in his walk with God and learn how to intercede with boldness.

Key Scriptures:* Exodus 32:30–32, 33:13–18 * Ephesians 3:14–21 * Galatians 6:1–2

Ask Yourself:* Who are you praying for with boldness? * Is God’s glory your deepest motivation—or are you just asking for relief? * What would happen in your life if you began praying like Moses and Paul?

In this raw and timely episode, Spencer speaks straight to the soul of every man walking the path toward purity. He shares how sexual sin doesn’t start in the bedroom, but in the heart. Drawing from Proverbs 4:23, he explains why guarding your heart is not optional—it’s spiritual life support.

You’ll hear the story of a brother facing deep relational brokenness because of compromise. You’ll hear how the slow drift into isolation and secrecy is Satan’s favorite trap. But most of all, you’ll be reminded of God’s promises, the power of confession, and the battle plan every man needs.

This episode is loaded with real talk, biblical truth, and powerful encouragement to:

  • Fight before the fall, not just after
  • Replace entitlement with worship
  • Trade secrecy for accountability

The Morning Hours - Prayer, Power, and Purity

Psalm 5:3 ~ O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

Let me begin this by saying, I understand that some men believe that they work and think and get energy mostly in the evening. And in doing so, they don’t give much thought to how they spend their mornings. If this is you, I want to challenge your assumptions. I want you to consider that prayer and preparation in the morning is far more valuable than evening productivity.

The man who is at war with lust must not sleep in. This war starts before your feet hit the floor. David says, “O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice.” And Spurgeon said it like this: “Prayer should be the key of the day and the lock of the night.

Because your enemy doesn’t sleep, rest, or care about your excuses, it is imperative that we wake early and begin with careful and precise prayers to our Lord and God.

Satan's first trick to lure people into sin is to show them the bait while hiding the hook; to offer the golden cup but conceal the poison inside; to highlight the sweetness, pleasure, and benefits of giving in to sin, while hiding the inevitable suffering and misery that follow. This is how he deceived the first humans. The serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. God knows that when you eat the fruit, your eyes will be opened, and you will be like gods, knowing good and evil” (Gen. 3:4-5).

“You'll have your eyes opened and become like gods!” That’s the bait—the pleasure, the sweetness, the gain. But what he hides is the hook—the shame, the anger of God, and the loss that will come for sure.

There are two ways our eyes can be opened: the mind can be opened to joy and contemplation, or the body to shame and confusion. Satan promises the first but delivers the second. He cheated Adam and Eve, offering them an apple in exchange for paradise, just like he continues to deceive countless people today.

That's a paraphrase from Thomas Brooks

Jesus did not seek His own glory. He constantly reminded people of this throughout the book of John.

His chief aim was to glorify God in all things. And He did that by telling the truth and having no falsehood in Himself.

It had me asking the question, "How often do I seek my own glory even by telling lies of omission (not saying things I should be saying)? Hiding when I should be confessing...boasting when I should be fasting...laughing when I should be weeping."

My flesh hates submission to God. But because the Spirit of Christ lives in me, HE causes my spirit to rejoice at the thought of submission to God.

So much of it comes down to the truth. Am I willing to embrace the truth even when it reveals me to be a weak sinner?

This is what Paul said:

"But He said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong." - 2 Corinthians 12:9-10

In this episode, we'll talk about the process each man of God should seek to walk in the Spirit.

Paul addresses the church in Corinth in his first letter and calls out something that had become evident to him...that they were Christians operating out of the self-life and not the Spirit-life.

He said that he couldn't feed them meat but that they still needed milk. This is an idea the writer of Hebrews also communicated to the church...they were still babies in Christ.

So what does this mean for us?

It means that it's possible to be a believer but remain a child in the faith stuck in the nurseries of our churches. But that is not where we're meant to stay. We have been told we need to grow up and make disciples. Babies can't make disciples; instead, they depend on others to serve them.

In this episode, we'll explore four worldly, carnal, fleshly Christian characteristics.

What does preparing your mind for action like Peter encourages the church in 1Peter 1:13 look like? How should we think soberly about our life and our stewardship of opportunities God's given us? What is my responsibility to lead others when I'm having a difficult time leading myself?

Brother, the LORD has called you to a life of action and bearing fruit for His glory. This will never happen without our minds being ready for action. In this episode, I'll discuss some very practical things that have helped me over the years.

In Psalms 101, we read some serious resolutions from David.

These should be both an encouragement and a warning for us, brothers.

Notice the "I WILL" and "I WILL NOT" statements from David. The praise of God should always lead us to promise, and that's what we see here.

Finally, these were never meant to be done in isolation. David needed men in his life just like we do.

Every man has an invitation.

And God provides the inspiration.

But we can't leave without noticing that we also have a warning.

As we break down Pslams 95, we'll see all three elements and how YOU can become a man of God who is the man of valor you desire to be.

Psalms 95

1Oh come, let us sing to the LORD;

let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

2 Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving;

let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!

3 For the LORD is a great God,

and a great King above all gods.

4 In his hand are the depths of the earth;

the heights of the mountains are his, also.

5 The sea is his, for he made it,

and his hands formed the dry land.

6 Oh come, let us worship and bow down;

let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker!

7 For he is our God,

and we are the people of his pasture,

and the sheep of his hand.

Today, if you hear his voice,

8 do not harden your hearts, as at Meribah,

as on the day at Massah in the wilderness,

9 when your fathers put me to the test

and put me to the proof, though they had seen my work.

10 For forty years, I loathed that generation

and said, “They are a people who go astray in their heart,

and they have not known my ways.”

11 Therefore I swore in my wrath,

“They shall not enter my rest.”

Every man can experience great joy...and great distress and trouble.

When it comes to porn, most believers who are struggling are faced with feelings and shame and guilt, and their stories can even turn suicidal or leave them without hope.

I know I've been hopeless before and just told myself, "I'll never be 100% free..."

That, my friend, is a lie.

And in this episode, I will show you how to examine and destroy your lies.

Acts 3:1-10

1 Now Peter and John were going up to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.

2 And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple.

3 Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms.

4 And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.”

5 And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them.

6 But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!”

7 And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.

8 And leaping up, he stood and began to walk, and entered the temple with them, walking and leaping and praising God.

9 And all the people saw him walking and praising God,

10 and recognized him as the one who sat at the Beautiful Gate of the temple, asking for alms. And they were filled with wonder and amazement at what had happened to him.

21 But the people of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who lived in Jerusalem, so the Jebusites have lived with the people of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day.

One of the most amazing things about the Lord is that He seeks and saves us and then gently deals with us throughout this life.

He desires for us to find our joy in Him so much that He is relentless in His sanctifying grace. There were times when I felt like giving up or losing heart...I'm sure you've felt that way as well.

Instead, use the gift of confession as the gift it was meant to be. We will never find purifying power hiding in darkness or cherishing our sin.

Psalms 66:16-20
16 Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul.
17 I cried to him with my mouth, and high praise was on my tongue.
18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
19 But truly God has listened; he has attended to the voice of my prayer.
20 Blessed be God, because he has not rejected my prayer or removed his steadfast love from me!

2 Corinthians 4:16-18
16 So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.
17 For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison,
18 as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.

Psalms 5:3

3 O LORD, in the morning you hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch.

David put it this way: “In the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up” (Ps. 5:3). This Scripture means that he marshaled his thoughts like men of war or that he aimed his prayers like arrows.

He did not take the arrow and put it on the bowstring and just shoot anywhere. After he had taken out the chosen shaft and fitted it to the string, he took deliberate aim.

He looked—looked well—at the center of the target. He kept his eye fixed on it, directing his prayer, and then drew his bow with all his strength and let the arrow fly.

Then, when the shaft had left his hand, what did he say? “[I] will look up.” He looked up to see where the arrow went, to see what effect it had, for he expected an answer to his prayers; he was not like many who scarcely think of their prayers after they have uttered them.

David knew that he had an engagement before him that required all his mental powers. He marshaled his faculties and went about the work in a workmanlike manner, as one who believed in it and meant to succeed.

Psalms 3:1-4
1 O Lord, how many are my foes! Many are rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul, “There is no salvation for him in God.” Selah
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the lifter of my head.
4 I cried aloud to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy hill.

Count Your Enemies:
1. Your flesh
2. The influence of the world
3. The Great Accuser and Liar

What are the lies of the enemy when men struggle with porn?
👉🏻 You don’t love God
👉🏻 You can’t trust God with your problems
👉🏻 God is tired of forgiving you for this
👉🏻 You’re a huge disappointment to Him
👉🏻 God is angry at you…He stopped loving you
👉🏻 He is going to punish you

But what are the promises of God...the truth vs the lies?

Google all of the promises of God and see if they don't prove to be a weapon against the lies of our enemy.

"There is a lifting up of the head by elevating to office, as with Pharaoh's butler; this we trace to the divine appointment. There is a lifting up in honor after shame, in health after sickness, in gladness after sorrow, in restoration after a fall, in victory after a temporary defeat; in all these respects the Lord is the lifter up of our head." ~ Spurgeon

What is hypocrisy?

Jeremiah 17:9-10
9 The heart is deceitful above all things,
    and desperately sick;

What does it mean that The Way (Jesus) is Unstoppable.

It means that when you have submitted to the rule and reign of Christ in your life, you will bear fruit in keeping with the truth.

Mark 4:20
"But those that were sown on the good soil are the ones who hear the word and accept it and bear fruit, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold."

What is that fruit?

Its practical outworking will look different in everyone's life, but it will most definitely be the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).

But what about the life of porn addiction? It will also bear fruit.

Jeremiah 17:5-6 says...
5 Thus says the Lord: “Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord.
6 He is like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see any good come. He shall dwell in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land.

And later in the same chapter...

9 The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?
10 “I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”

Every day we're producing fruit. That fruit comes from being planted and nourished by the Word of God in the presence of Christ. Or it comes from a life wandering in a spiritual desert. That fruit will not provide any nourishment for the man or his family.

Psalm 107 shows us what desperate men do in desperate situations.

They call out to God.

But one of the biggest challenges...your greatest enemy...is that you don't believe your life of porn is a desperate situation. You've managed to hide it and lie about it so long, that it's a part of your life.

But in the back of your mind, you believe it can come unraveled at any moment...your life can spiral out of control if the truth comes out.

You don't think you're desperate, and that's why you stay trapped in the pit of porn. Let's walk through Psalm 107, 2 Corinthians 4, and Galatians 1 to see, maybe for the first time, that your life of 'peace' is actually one of your greatest enemies.

At this point in our discussion, it's important for them to know that they are demonstrating one of the requirements for freedom from porn.

But it takes two.

In this podcast episode, we use Psalms 88, Hebrews 10, and 2 Peter 1 to uncover these two requirements and put them in perspective for the man struggling to quit porn and masturbation forever.

Our Mission is Simple God has commanded us to put to death whatever is sinful in us and set our minds on things above where Christ is seated in victory. Colossians 3:1-5

It is a very similar command that God gave King Saul, and yet he believed that partial obedience was good enough for God.

Where in your life...and in my life...are we holding on to sin and pretending that God doesn't care? For a lot of men, pornography is one enemy of God we keep alive like Saul kept king Agag alive.

1 Samuel 15:2-3

2 Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘I have noted what Amalek did to Israel in opposing them on the way when they came up out of Egypt.

3 Now go and strike Amalek and devote to destruction all that they have. Do not spare them, but kill both man and woman, child and infant, ox and sheep, camel and donkey.’”

1 Samuel 15:7-9

7 And Saul defeated the Amalekites from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt.

8 And he took Agag the king of the Amalekites alive and devoted to destruction all the people with the edge of the sword.

9 But Saul and the people spared Agag and the best of the sheep and of the oxen and of the fattened calves and the lambs, and all that was good, and would not utterly destroy them. All that was despised and worthless they devoted to destruction.

As men...as God's people...we are always doing something or not doing something based on WHO we believe ourselves to be.

God's people throughout history have struggled with their identity. And because of this, they struggled with sin.

In this episode, we will look at how Israel's request for a king to look 'like all the other nations' was not only a rebellion against God, but it was a refusal of the identity He gave them when He called them out of Egypt.

Are we any different today?

When we choose NOT to be identified as God's people - set apart as holy - it's easy to see porn as a part of who we are. When this happens, we remain trapped.

1 Samuel paints a sobering picture of God's people...even His judge Eli...taking His Word lightly.

The result is disastrous for the people.

But God raises up Samuel who ministers before the Lord and grows in both stature and in favor with God and the people (sounds familiar).

But Samuel's word is not enough...the people must suffer a humiliating defeat by their enemies before they repent, put away their idols, and call on God to save them from their enemies. In this case, as in many times throughout God's Word, purity precedes power.

1 Thessalonians 3:1-5

and we sent Timothy, our brother and God's coworker in the gospel of Christ, to establish and exhort you in your faith,

that no one be moved by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are destined for this.

For when we were with you, we kept telling you beforehand that we were to suffer affliction, just as it has come to pass, and just as you know.

For this reason, when I could bear it no longer, I sent to learn about your faith, for fear that somehow the tempter had tempted you and our labor would be in vain.

There is a Psalm I love that says: "So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom." Psalms 90:12 Numbering our days is just a way of remembering that life is short and we're not guaranteed tomorrow.

John Piper says great wisdom...life-revolutionizing wisdom...comes from thinking about these things from time to time.

I like to think of the end of a year like the end of a lifetime.

As I look back on 2021, I can ask questions like...

  • Did I live this year well?
  • What needs to change?
  • How do those I care about most feel about how I spent 2021?

Don't waste 2022 on resolutions that are promised today and forgotten tomorrow. Spend time thinking and praying deeply for a life-changing 2022. One in which you finally become serious about killing this sin in your life.

In this episode, we explore 1 Thessalonians 1 and Paul's encouragement to the church at the gospel-centered change that had taken place in their lives. There are lessons for us all over these first several verses. Be encouraged...God is greater and more powerful than your problem with porn. But it requires you to become deadly serious about transformation.

Galatians 5:17
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

Sin is always acting, always conceiving, always seducing and tempting.

Who can say that he had ever anything to do with God or for God, that indwelling sin had not corrupted what he did?

Do you kill sin?

Do you make it your daily work?

Be always at it while you live;
cease not a day from this work;
be killing sin or it will be killing you.

This is a tough question for most men. In this episode, I'll help you think through this important issue. Hebrews 11:23-29 23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict. 24 By faith Moses, when he was grown up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, 25 choosing rather to be mistreated with the people of God than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. 26 He considered the reproach of Christ greater wealth than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. 27 By faith he left Egypt, not being afraid of the anger of the king, for he endured as seeing him who is invisible. 28 By faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled the blood, so that the Destroyer of the firstborn might not touch them. 29 By faith the people crossed the Red Sea as on dry land, but the Egyptians, when they attempted to do the same, were drowned.

Instead, they download some internet blocking software that might make the change for them. Or take a pill. Or blame the government or their spouse or anyone else but themselves.

Over the past three years, I have learned a lot about change mostly through trial and error and failing and a little success.

In my opinion, the best way to change is to identify small daily opportunities (and there are many to choose from) that will produce large changes over time.

In this podcast, I'll walk you through nine important changes I made in my life that were part of my freedom from pornography.

There’s nothing complicated about any of these. As a matter of fact, someone might say these are ‘common sense.’ But common sense isn’t common practice from what I’ve observed.

And even though they’re simple. They are easier not to do than to do.

That is a choice you have to make.

Men (who are also followers of Christ) who have struggled with porn for years and years and possibly decades and decades have sought to be free in many ways.

  • Porn blockers
  • Accountability
  • Will power
  • Meetings

The list could go on.

And still, they stay stuck...WHY?

What keeps them in the pit of porn not able to live out of purpose? What keeps them living in the shadows afraid in the night and avoiding the light?

There are many answers to these questions...many complex answers.

But I can point to at least three indicators...three signs...that a follower of Christ will continue struggling with porn.

In this podcast, we'll examine each of these in order to see if you yourself can identify with this list.

There are three types of men in this world and you need to know which one you are.

This is especially vital when it comes to how each of these men responds to the Word of God.

Why is this relevant? Because this world is not our home and we have a promised rest for any who persevere to the end.

Hebrews 4:11-13

11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience. 12 For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. 13 And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.

Listen in to determine the type of man you are...and if you find that it's not the man you want to be, there's good news...God is patient with us and promises to transform us.

I was speaking with a man this morning about his porn addiction and he described all of his issues:

  • Porn and acting out
  • Anger
  • Depression
  • Loneliness

And then I asked him a question we all need to ask...I said, "Those all sound like symptoms and not the deep root issue...what do you think the issue beneath the surface is?"

And that's the subject of this podcast.

But we don't stop with the root...we'll also explore the remedy.

Hebrews 3:12-13
"12 Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. 13 But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called “today,” that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin."

Anytime you want to change something in your life...to grow...to improve...you should expect resistance.

Change is hard. But as believers, we're after transformation (Romans 12:2). And that's impossible without the supernatural work of the Spirit.

If a man commits to being transformed, the first thing he needs to know is that there will be resistance. There will be resistance from within and without.

But if you are constantly asking yourself 'who am I becoming' and aligning your thoughts, patterns, habits, and addictions accordingly, then resistance becomes a signal that you're moving in the right direction.

If there's no resistance in your life, it's likely because you're comfortable with your current status quo.

In this episode, we'll examine how God's people have experienced resistance for thousands of years and what both Peter and the author of Hebrews command God's people to do/believe in order to overcome the resistance.

"Surrounded with millions of foes without, and infected with a legion of enemies within." - George Whitfield

YOU CAN BE SAVED BUT STILL BE A SLAVE!

We don't like to admit this, but it's the truth.

Men who are stuck in the pit of porn feel like they're in a prison they can't escape. They desperately want to escape but they can't find a way out.

We read in Hebrews 2:14-15n that the death of Jesus on the cross accomplished two things:

  1. He destroyed the devil
  2. He delivered us from lifelong slavery

He's talking about eternal salvation in this passage. And it's true if we're God's children, we are no longer slaves. But it's also true that many still live as slaves and not as free men.

When porn is a part of your life it's a clear indication that you are living not a victorious life, but an anxious, powerless, purposeless life with little to no power before God.

In this episode, we'll look at God's Word and talk about how we can become free.

In this episode, we'll circle back to the discussion of the truth of your current condition and offer you an assessment that you can use for yourself to better understand where you are.

Then we're going to look at the great DRIFT. This is something we all do and we need to recognize in ourselves. Like a ship drifting at sea, if we aren't careful, we'll wind up in a place we never imagined.

The problem is the drift and the remedy is paying close attention to the truth of the Gospel.

Hebrews 2:1 - "Therefore we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away from it."

“We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither this belief nor any other will automatically remain alive in your mind. It must be fed. And as a matter of fact, if you examined a hundred people who had lost their faith in Christianity, I wonder how many of them would turn out to have been reasoned out of it by honest argument? Do not most people simply drift away?”

It always blew my mind to walk into a community and see how people lived for generations. They lived with no access to clean water which meant certain results in their homes:

  • Poverty
  • Sickness
  • Lack of education
  • Women and children suffered the most

But I was no different inwardly.

The only difference was I was able to hide my sickness and spiritual poverty from my wife, my friends, my church. All the while pretending I had everything under control.

In this episode, we are going to discuss the desperate need of men who are willing tell the truth. Men who are willing to face the facts of their situation.

Pilate asked Jesus a very powerful question, "What is truth?"

This is a questions worth exploring because if we're not dealing with the truth of our current condition, it's a clear indication we're lying to ourselves.

The passage we'll look at is found in Psalm 139.

Psalms 139:7-12
7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.

Psalms 139:23-24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!

What happens when a man's heart is continually conditioned by years of pornography? In this episode, Spencer will share his story of how porn changed his heart and lead to an implosion in 2013. We'll also discuss why men continue to hide, isolate, and sedate even when they desperately want to be done with porn use.
