Manchester’s Harbor Master and Police Chief told the board their teams have been overwhelmed by the increase of boaters in the area. On July 23, 2022 over 300 boats were in the area. Citizens called Town Hall and Police reporting trespassing and underage drinking.

The first robbery at Gloucester’s beloved sandwich shop The Yellow Submarine is a tough blow for the owners who already suffered a fire this year. The second robbery was at a Speedway gas station and only one person is considered a person of interest.
In other news the city of Gloucester will borrow the $28 million for the SawyerFree2025 project. The City has access to a better borrowing arrangement that will serve all and the corporation that is the actual library will pay it back. Lastly, the FV Grace Marie sank 80 miles off Gloucester this past week. The 7 member crew “all did the right thing;” they put on life suits and got into lifeboats, and were rescued. The cause is under investigation.

Sawyer Free Library 2025 is the new capital fundraising campaign to renovate and modernize the Sawyer Free Library. Frederica Doeringer and Chad Konecky from the library tell Kory and Heather the project will expand the existing facility and include a 15,000 square foot addition.
In order to receive a Mass Library Grant for this ambitious project, SawyerFree2025 must show “community viability;” they must raise $10 million by next fall to show this is a project the community wants.

Nancy Steele is the founder of Folly Cove Studio LLC and the Director of their new program the Folly Cove Intensive. The intensive is a workshop for small business entrepreneurs or non-profit directors working in the health, wellness or food sectors. Mayor Verga’s first proposed budget is calling for a 6.3% increase in spending. Ethan breaks down the Mayor’s proposed 2023 budget, which includes his campaign promise of a Sustainability Director. The Budget and Planning Committee will be taking up different sections of the budget in the next month. The public forum will be June 7th.

Gloucester Public Health Director Max Schenk speaks to Heather Atwood and Kory Curcuru about Covid-19 in Gloucester and insect precautions with the summer season approaching. Schenk tells Cape Ann Today Gloucester’s wastewater bot has detected an increase in Covid-19, but hospitalizations and deaths are low. PCR Testing is now available at the O’Maley School.
The City of Gloucester has to opt-out of the state’s mosquito spraying program. Schenk cautions the state can still spray if they declare an emergency regardless of the decision to opt-out. Holocaust Remembrance Day begins this Wednesday evening. On Sunday, May 1 at 3:00, The Gloucester Meeting House and Temple Achavat Achim will host a special event to honor this time. Holocaust Remembrance Project Co-Chairs Susan Quateman and Amy Farber talk to Heather Atwood about a special commissioned work entitled “The Grip of Evil, The Endurance of Hope” by composer Leslie Steinweiss.
Mr. Steinweiss talks about the methods and resources he used to create this dramatic piece, including the story of Susan Quateman’s grandmother. Quateman’s grandmother was betrayed by her former husband’s second wife, and taken from her children to Auschwitz, where she committed suicide.

Jeff Pope writes about Strategic Land Venture’s (SLV) 40 B project in Manchester-by-the-Sea. Pope speaks to Heather Atwood about the proposed 136 unit project located off School Street near Shingle Hill.

Ethan Forman from the Gloucester Daily Times details the results of voting by the City Council’s Planning and Development Committee in Wednesday night’s meeting. The Planning and Development Committee voted on a series of proposed zoning amendments that they will send to the Gloucester City Council to consider.
Gloucester non-resident beach parking is going online. Starting May 18th, Gloucester will be using the online Yodel system. Non-residents can reserve parking spaces through this system and pay for their parking 10 days in advance. No refunds for unused spaces.

State Senator Bruce Tarr discusses recent climate change legislation passed by the Massachusetts State Senate Friday, April 15, 2022. An alternative bill filed by the minority party failed to pass. Senator Tarr comments on the need for climate solutions in the form of electric vehicles and offshore wind.
New changes to Massachusetts marijuana laws were approved unanimously by the State Senate. Senator Tarr tells Heather the changes would limit excessive fees municipalities charge dispensary operators and make the licensed marijuana industry more equitable.
Senator Tarr has helped create “Cape Ann Works” a program aimed to connect foreign exchange students with local employers. The initiative will attract foreign students to Cape Ann to work for the summer season. A website will be made available for students and employers.

Greenheads are a painful nuisance to beach and waterfront patrons during the summer months. Erika Brown from The Cricket has some exciting news to share with Heather Atwood and Kory Curcuru. Three students from the 2022 graduating class of Manchester Essex Regional High School will be attending the Berkeley School of Music in the fall. In other good news local boy scouts packed up care packages for deployed American troops and Manchester residents are in the final week of training for the Boston Marathon.

The Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) has partnered with Bioconnects New England to seek funding from $1 billion in Build Back Better Regional Challenge funds. Last October 228 people attended a Manchester-by-the-Sea special town meeting but only 150 votes were counted. Erika Brown from The Cricket tells Heather Atwood and Kory Curcuru It appears as if there may have been something wrong with the vote counting system, but the town has not confirmed the issue yet.
Local homeowners donated a building structure to the MBTS Fire Department for training. Erika Brown says the event was nothing short of dramatic.

The City Council is forming a committee to address the Private vs. Public roads in Gloucester. Ethan Forman from the Gloucester Daily Times tells Heather Atwood and Kory Curcuru that for years there has been much confusion over what responsibility homeowners vs. the city have for maintaining regularly used private roads.
Local officials are fighting the moving of a Veterans Affairs clinic to Salem. In the name of a more centralized site, the VA Administration would like to move Gloucester’s VA clinic to Salem. Mayor Verga promises to fight for Cape Ann Veterans to not have to make that difficult commute for treatment.

Massachusetts State Senator Bruce Tarr talks to Heather Atwood about this year’s supplemental budget. Erika Brown from The Cricket joined 1623 Studios’s Kory Curcuru at the Manchester History Museums live lecture series for a presentation on the Booth Family. The Manchester Historical Museum asked Kory to be the guest speaker because of his original series Timeline: Cape Ann that premiered an episode “The House that Booth Built”. Three Booth brothers built The Masconomo House overlooking Singing Beach during the era of grand summer hotels on Cape Ann. Erika reviews Kory’s presentation of the Booth Family story in Manchester, and anticipates the many events that will happily be live once again.
