Hayley Holly joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.Hayley is from Listowel and plays the fiddle.She performed her tune 'An Madra Dubh' for us.
Kaya spoke to some of the members of Banna Sea Rescue.Thomas Ward, James O'Loughlin, Pat Lawlor and Brian Crean.Banna Sea Rescue has been serving the community since 1983.
Seán Butler from Scartaglen joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.He is a 17-year-old musician and plays the accordion and melodion.He performed the tune 'The Last Chance' for the show.
Tomás Mac an tSaoir joins Kaya on Travels through a Kingdom.The Ballyferriter man has travelled across the world on two wheels.He spoke to Kaya about his experience in Africa, and travelling from New Zealand and through Asia.He has met some fascinating people, and went through hard times, including an encounter with lions!But Tomas is not finished and is going to cycle from Dubai to Ireland in a few months.Email kflynn@radiokerry.ie.
Bryan O'Leary joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.Bryan is from Gneeveguilla, a part of the county where traditional music is inhaled by so many.His grandfather, Johnny O'Leary, inspired Bryan to pick up the accordion and carry on his legacy after he passed away in 2004.Since then, Bryan has traveled the world, met like-minded people and has begun composing his own tunes.
On Travels Through a Kingdom with Kaya Flynn, we mark 50 years since the sudden passing of Denis Murphy.On April 7th 1974, the Sliabh Luachra community lost one of the biggest inflencial fiddle players.Denis 'The Weaver' Murphy was born in Lisheen in 1910.The Murphy family were known as 'The Weavers" as so many people in the area shared the same surname.The Waiver has come from Denis' fathers people in the 1800's as they were weavers of flex in olden times, but in 1890, moved to small scale farming.Denis' father Bill played in the local fife and drum band, and all of his children were taught how to play the fiddle in turn.Music was always asscoaited with Denis life and it was no surprise he became so hugely admired for his style of playing.Denis released The Star Above the Garter and other albums along side his sister Julia Clifford, Pádraig O'Keeffe and Johnny O'Leary.The community of Sliabh Luachra still remember him to this very day and unveiled a plaque at his grave to mark his 50th anniversary of his death.Kaya spoke to Pj Teahan, Con Moynihan, Donal Hickey, Bryan O'Leary, Pat O'Sullivan, Christy Cronin, Mick Culloty and Denis O'Connor.They shared their memories of Denis, and the connections he had with the people of Sliabh Luachra.Pat O'Sullivan wrote and composed a song in memory of Denis.Christy Cronin sang The Waiver from Lisheen, which was written by Mike Cremin.Archive of Denis from 1956 interviewed by Ciarán MacMathúna from the Handed Down Sliabh Luachra Archives.Photos from Sliabh Luachra Archive.
Michael Mulcahy from Rathkeale joins Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.Michael has produced films with John Lynch from Listowel for a number of years.They are both featured in Kerry Writers' Museum as The Bolex Boys.
John Lynch, from Listowel, joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.John has produced and filmed 135 films in North Kerry.Each film is historic and has brought John on a journey each time.He spoke about the films he made and how he found his passion for it.
Kaya visited The Bolex Boys exhibition in Kerry Writers' Museum in Listowel.Ciarán Walsh and Cara Trant spoke about the exhibition and about John Lynch and Michael Mulcahy.

Next up on our journey discovering the story of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, Kaya met Brendan and Loreto.Brendan Murphy and Loreto Lynch have children with additional needs.With the money that was raised from the cycle, Cúnamh Iveragh was able to open it's doors.It is a new four-bed respite centre at the Cúnamh Iveragh building in Cahersiveen.Brendan and Loreto spoke to Kaya about how it has changed their lives and their families' lives, and it couldn't have been done without the help of the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.
Colleen Morey is a career educator who for over 35 years specialized in serving special needs populations as both teacher and administrator through program development and implementation. Her first journey to an orphanage in Colombia in 1997 planted the seeds of mission and outreach within her heart.She divides her time between Flordia, and Kenmare, Ireland. She spoke to Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
Noreen Devane has been apart of the Ring of Kerry Chairty Cycle since it started.Although she never cycled it herself, she is a huge part of the event.Noreen supplies sandwiches and tea for everyone who needs it at the Ring of Kerry Hotel in Cahersiveen.Over the years she has very special memories of the cycle and she shared them to Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
The Ring of Kerry Chairty Cycle has been raising money for 40 years.But it takes a community to make such an event possible.The Red Fox Inn of Glenbeigh go above and beyond every year to show their support by offering cyclists, tea, bananas and toilet facilities.Kaya spoke to Tim Mulvihill about what they do and how he himself has cycled the Ring of Kerry many times.
Fiona O'Malley joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.Fiona is from Offaly, but her studies have brought her to and from our glorious county of Kerry many times. David Keohan joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.David has travelled all around Ireland lifting stones with a historic background.He began lifting stones during Covid, when gyms had to close down.People started to invite David out to their homes asking him tolift stones which had history behind it.He shared his story with Kaya.
A new historic trail has been launches in Killorglin.22 plagues around the town offer a brief synapsis of history.Johnny Porridge O'Connor of Killorglin Archives and Shane McEvoy of Killorglin Chamber Alliance spoke to Kaya about the idea.Killorglin Archive Society, Killorglin History and Folklore and Killorglin Chamber Alliance worked on the project and are hoping to expand more.
Charlie Nelligan sat down with Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.A name you'd associate with Kerry football is also a name very well known in the baking industry.Charlie has been making bracks for as long as he can remember, ad the family recipes have been passed down for generations.While Charlie was busy with Kerry football, he opened his first bakery in Castleisland and never looked back.

The Patrick O'Keeffe festival took place in Castleisland on the October bank holiday weekend.In Saint John's Hall, over 160 students from 12 different schools, came together to play jigs, reels and dance.It proved the power of music and how it unites us all.Two students took part in the brush dance, while the students provided the tunes.Email kflynn@radiokerry.ie.

The Killarney National Park Autumn Talks Series 2023 is returning for the first time since the Covid pandemic.The talks are kicking off on Thursday October 5th and will continue for six weeks.
Kaya ventured out to Camp Fair on her Travels Through a Kingdom.The fair dates back centuries to the time of Lord Ventry when a ram auction was held in the village.Lord Ventry brought the first black faced scotch breed of sheep to West Kerry.He carried 1,000 ewes on his lands in Beheenagh, Camp at this time.The fair has survived down through the years and is as always a great social occasion too for the local sheep farmers and the families of Camp.Kaya caught up with some locals who were there on the day.If you'd like to feature on Travels Through a Kingdom, email kflynn@radiokerry.ie
Linda Lyne is a Zoologist and Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.Recently, Kaya discovered a lizard at her home in Mid-Kerry.Surprised to see such a creature, she got in touch with Linda to hear how common they are in Ireland.Linda says if you keep even one quarter of your garden wild, you have a good chance of seeing numerous species around.Search the #IveraghLizards on Twitter to see where they are!
11-year-old Rian Gleeson, from Glenflesk, recently won two medals at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Mullingar.He came first in the under 12 Miscellaneous title and the under 12 storytelling.He has many storytellers as idols, but one of those is Frances Kennedy, who joined us and his father Michael Gleeson, who is so proud of him.Email kflynn@radiokerry.ie to get in touch.

She received hundreds of cards, including a letter from President Micheal D. Higgins.
Throughout her life, Mary suffered from cancer twice.
She also volunteered for Daffodil Day for over 30 years.

Walter Sheehy of Strand Street Dingle joined Kaya on Travels through a Kingdom.
Walter grew up in Dingle all his life and tells of times where they would go to the seaside and play marbles on the streets.
Walter and his wife, Maura, ran a shop for 45 years.
They decided to retire almost 6 years ago and have never looked back.

On Saturday June 24th, more than 1100 people took part in Dolly Day.
The aim was to break a Guinness World Record of the most Dolly look-a-likes in one venue.
The event also raised money for Comfort for Chemo Kerry and Kerry Hospice.

Living in Listry, Jim grew up in Farranfore.
He was born in the 1940s and reflects on an entirely different life to what Ireland is today.
Jim has won multiple medals for long and high jump over the years and plans to compete in the over 80s category soon.

Kaya travels to Ballyfinnane for the launch of the Ballyfinnane Festival of Speed.
She spoke to Sean Moriarty, Dave Curran, Mike Carroll and Dennis O'Neill about the event.
On July 15 1903, Charles Rolls, who a year later became a founding partner of the Rolls Royce Motor Company, won the Kerry Hillclimb, the final event in the first-ever Irish SpeedFortnight.
The event paved the way for closed road motorsport in County Kerry and today the county boasts two very active motor clubs and four events ranging from an international rally, a national rally, a club rally and a historic rally.

Their first Christmas Choir takes place in the Cathedral in Killarney on December 4th , eith proceeds heading to Down Syndrome Kerry.

On Travels Through a Kingdom, Kaya is in Sneem for the Sneem Storytelling Festival for its 9th year. Storytellers took part to tell stories to people around and Kaya met with Paddy O’Brien who was one of those.
Ger Healy, The Singing Jarvey, is a wellknown name in the Gap of Dunloe area and futher surrounding areas.
Ger joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom and spoke his life as a jarvey, the seasons, his love for music and preforming and his family life.
He plays us a tune on his tinwhistle.
A smile is one of the most important things one can wear according to Ger.

P Commane Booksellers has been in the heart of Rock Street for many years.
Paudie Commane grew up here when his parents owned the premisses as a bar, and later changed it to a wellknown hardware shop.
Paudie tells Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom his memories growing up in both the bar and hardware shop and how having one of the largest second-hand bookshops in Tralee has been.

Martin Moore joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
Martin, orginally from Listowel, but now in Tralee, is a local historian and part-time accountant.
Martin loves history and when Kaya messaged him about a story she saw in the local paper, he was all over it.
It brought them on to their chat about Martin's grá for camino walks and what they mean to him.
We are very lucky to have our Kerry Camino here, which he has experienced many times.
He also shares the most beautiful walkways that are available to us here in Kerry.

Mary Fusco joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom to tell her amazing story.
Mary took up powerlifting in January of this year.
She wanted to do something new, and after doing cardio based workouts and walks, she decided powerlifting was for her.
When she approached a gym, she said her goal was to compete.
Little did Mary realise, she would win a bronze medal 10 months later at the World Championships in Canada!
With the support of a life-long family friend, Mary's dreams came through when she could travel to compete.
Her family watched her from home and sent her endless amount of love and support.
Mary would encourage anyone, man or woman, no matter what age, to just face to fear and do it.

The community of Women 2000 joined Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
Women 2000 was set up in 2000, where a group of ladies completed a course, and did not want to part ways.
Little did they realise, the group would form to a tribe of many ladies, enjoying a catch up and a cup of tea.
They exercise, go on trips together and look out for one another.

Peter O'Toole is a retired Park Ranger, who lives in the heart of Killarney National Park.
Peter's love for nature commenced at a young age. He didn't grow up with television, so most of his childhood was spent out in the nature.
As a Park Ranger, he took on many tasks, such as the tagging of Red Deer and controlling rhododendron.
Peter also talks of his love for photography, which he inheritaed from his late friend.

Kevin was born in West London in the Portabello Road area and has lived in London all of his life although now he spends a lot of time in his home in Glenbeigh.
Kevin's mother Mary Danaher was from Ardagh ( where the Ardagh chalice was found) Co Limerick.
Seven of her siblings including her emigrated, two to the USA and five to the UK including her.
She worked in service in London in the 1920s and 1930s where she met his father Robert Emmett O’Brien who had emigrated from Dublin.
His parents always maintained a strong connection with Ireland .
Kevin's late brother Brendan and himself made frequent visits to Dublin and Limerick and were brought up to think of ourselves as Irish a feeling which has remained with him all my life.
The Kerry connection comes through Katherine, his wife who Kevin met in London when they were both teaching in the same school.
Her mother was from Bansha , Killorglin and her father from Kantoher, Co Limerick .
Also both emigrants who met in London.
Then Kevin's love for Kerry came from his frequent visits to Killorglin over the last 30 years with his wife culminating in buying a home in Glenbeigh 10 years ago.

Paul Hanrahan moved to Tralee a number of years ago and has never looked back.
Paul is a well-known face around the community of Tralee.
He has opened up many businesses around the town and some of which are run by volunteers.
Paul set up Action Lesotho in May 2005, which helps the people of Lesotho living with AIDS.
Their goal is "Action Lesotho is an Irish NGO whose aim is to bring much needed humanitarian and development aid from Ireland to the Kingdom of Lesotho".

Maria Gillen is the current Storyteller in Residence for the Kerry Writers Museum.
She is a well known Bean An Tí (Irish Session Host) on the Irish Storytelling Circuit.
Maria loves to tell stories and she believes it is such a vitalpart of our hertiage to keep up the tradition.
For the Listowel Storytelling Festival, Maria hosted some workshops.
Kaya got the chance to speak to Maria about her grá for storytelling and she shares the story 'How Dragons Became Dragonflies'.

Paddy Regan is a storyteller from Cork.
He was part of the Listowel Storytelling Festival 2022.
Kaya caught up with Paddy where he told a few yarns and stories.

Ian Humphreys is an artist from the UK.
From a young age, Ian was introduced to art after his parents were so impressed by his talent.
Most of his work is influenced by the sea or wherever he is. But Ian doesns't let his imagination take over, he let's his art come from his unconscious mind.
Ian is now currently displaying his artwork at the Kenmare Butter Market until the 25th September and you can find out all the information here.

Batt Burns is a well known name in Sneem.
He is a storyteller and retired teacher.
He grew up in Sneem, in South Kerry, with his grandparents, where he was introduced to storytelling.
Years ago, there was no such thing as televisions or radio. All one had was their imagination, which Batt and his grandfather used to tell stories of entertainment and folklore.
This led to Batt's vreative way of storytelling.
He loved his job as a teacher and learning.
In later years, Batt moved to Amercia for a short while. In this time, he wrote his book, The King with Horses Ears and Other Irish Folktales.
Batt believes it is vital we can tell at least one story in our lives, as it's apart of our culture.
Kaya and Batt also chat about Sneem and what it was like years ago compared to now.

Puck is back, let's have the craic!
Puck Fair is a hugely popular festival held annually on August 10th, 11th and 12th.
Due to Covid-19, there was no festival since 2019.
Kaya visited Declan Mangan, Declan Falvey, Gearldine O'Sullivan, Marcella O'Sullivan, Caroline Murohy and Alysha Williams, who all play a big role in preparing Puck, cathring for Puck and the aftermath of Puck.
They share their memories, preparations and what they're looking forward to most for this years Puck Fair.
Since 1854 Little Samphire Island Lighthouse has served as a navigation light for Tralee Bay.
Lightkeepers manned the station for more than a hunddred years from 1854 to 1956.
To this day, the lighthouse still serves as a navigation beckon!
Mary O'Brien, Margaret Crowley, Mikey Moriarty, Dermot Crowley and John McGibney tell the story of Little Samphire Lighthouse.

Paddy O’Brien is from Keel, but now living in Cork.
Paddy is a natural storyteller who has appeared at Storytelling festivals all over Ireland.
He has been a featured stroryteller on many occasions at the world famous Cape Clear International Storytelling Festival.
Paddy can entertain any audience from age 3 to 103 with his fantastic stories, songs and verse - told in his own inimitable way.
Paddy worked on RTÉ television as presenter of "Dilín Ó Deamhas", an Irish language TV programme for children (1982 /1986 ).
Paddy spent many happy years acting with Compántas Chorcaí ( Irish language drama ). This highly rated group presented shows throughout the island of Ireland.
Paddy has written stories, poems and songs in both Irish and English. He regularly writes material for children. His panto "Ali Baba agus an 40 TD's" was staged at The Everyman Theatre, Cork.
I was curious to hear the stories that surrounds Kerrys Mountain, Caherconree, which Paddy tells us.
He shares the Legends of Caherconree with Travels Through a Kingdom.
Kevin Leahy runs the Black Sheep Hostel and Cafe in the heart of Killarney.
The business is run by renewable energy and they plant their own herbs and vegetable in their polytunnel.
Not only does Kevin run a business, but he is Kerrys ultra-marathon runner.
this year alone, Kevin has completed two ultra marathons.
Kevin walked 300 miles across snowbound Canadian wilderness, slept in -30 degree conditions, and narrowly avoided frostbite to win one of the worlds toughest races. Then, three weeks later, he went on to complete the 500km Lapland Arctic Ultra in Sweden after five and half days in the frozen wilderness.
He shares the story of these marathons, the training required and advice to anyone looking to take on an ultra-marathon with Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
"Being part of a team here, has given me my life back". Those are the words of Martin Griffin when Kaya asked him why he volunteers at the Latrigue Monorail in Listowel.
The Lartigue Monorail was opened between Ballybunion and Listowel in 1888.
The monorail-design system was developed by Charles Lartigue after he was inspired by watching a camel train working in Algeria.
The line was damaged in the Civil War and was closed in 1924.
Today the Lartigue Monorail Museum is a popular spot to see all the old artefacts, history and the replica of the monorail.
Martin is a volunteer at the museum and he shares the story with Kaya on Travels Through a Kingdom.
