When we talk about the transition to cleaner energy, the oil and gas industry is often the
villain in the story, but the thing we must not forget is that this industry has provided us with a
degree of economic growth and the comfort of living we know today. Therefore, it would be
frivolous to expect that we can just switch off the fossil fuels industry.
However, the oil and gas industry is indeed in transition to a more sustainable direction, in
order to meet the changes in society. While fossil fuels will continue to play a role going into
the future, the question is: how do we do that in a cleaner way?

Did you know technology currently has the same emissions as the global aviation industry? That’s 1-2 % of total global carbon emissions! We are also generating 57 million tons of electronic waste, or e-waste, annually—that’s equivalent to the weight of the Great Wall of China. By 2025 we will have 60 billion devices around the world, and by 2030 it’s expected that e-waste will be around 70 million tons.

Before joining Nefco in 2018, Trond worked for 30 years in emerging markets, in Eastern Europe, Asia and Africa, including 15 years in Ukraine financing the mobile phone and internet infrastructure scale-up. Originally from Norway, Trond now lives in Helsinki, Finland, where he leads Nefco and its 50+ employees who focus on financing the scale-up of Nordic green solutions on global markets. Founded in 1990 by the five Nordic countries, Nefco has already financed and implemented over 1,500 projects in energy efficiency, renewable energy, clean water & sanitation, waste management and cleaner industrial processes, among others. To date, more than 600 Nordic growth companies have received financing from Nefco to scale up their green technologies and solutions on global markets.
Nefco is probably one of the first green banks in the world, and it is driven by the mission of accelerating the green transition. By not being afraid of the risk, the company is leading the green transition in the finance sector by example, and it is an embodiment of Trond’s dream - a world where all financing is green.
