Hunting pheasants is a huge tradition in South Dakota. It's a way of life in the state and it encourages people to get outside, especially the kids. September is National Suicide Prevention Month and for the third year, Avera Health launched its ‘Ask The Question’ campaign. This campaign is built around the research-based premise that being direct can save lives. Asking someone who’s struggling a direct question, “Are you thinking about suicide?” in a caring way can open a meaningful conversation that leads to the person at risk to get help. It’s not always an easy conversation to have. But on the bright side: Suicide rates have fallen in South Dakota for two years in a row. New data that came out this year now shows that 80% of kids in school are not reading at their grade level. Dr. Bonni Boschee has been an educator throughout South Dakota for over 30 years. Now retired, she created the Read2Soar program in 2006 which teaches kids and even college students how to read, write, and articulate their speech. With the guidance of Dr. Bonni, she is able to scientifically determine each child's strengths and weaknesses in the Read2Soar program. In a matter of weeks under Dr. Bonni and her reaching coaches, kids are reading above their grade level. She is actively looking for new coaches to join Read2Soar this March. The 2022 Levitt at the Falls season is about to begin! Game Plan 4 Hope is a brand new organization in the Sioux Empire that started in September of 2019. Jeff and Missy Bass created this organization after their son, Trenton was injured in the 2nd football game of his senior year in 2017. He's life changed in an instant when doctors told him he injured his spinal cord and broke C5 and C6 of his vertebrae. Trenton is quadriplegic and his injury inspired his parents to reach out to other families experiencing similar stories. However, there are limits and you can't light them within the city limits of Sioux Falls. The University of South Dakota and LifeScape are proud to announce their partnership for USD's new graduate program. The two-year Board-Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) Graduate Certificate program, designed by the USD Center for Disabilities, is offered by the USD School of Health Science Department of Public Health and Health Sciences. LifeScape, a Sioux Falls-based organization that services children and adults with disabilities, including autism, will provide instructors and clinical opportunities for students in the program.
