Niall Greenwood, Neuron Innovations at ICDD 2021: How a ground based sensor network enables the integration of drones and manned flight.
Neuron is founded by aviators with an understanding that the future flight sector will need to be enabled by fully integrating digitally native drones, urban and regional air mobility alongside existing crewed aircraft in a single sky. By deploying a low cost ground based sensor network we can ingest all aircraft telemetry data and create a single source of truth about the whereabouts of all aircraft, and thereby allow traffic managers to keep them safely separated. We combine this technology with a strong governance model that means no single or group of parties can lock others out of the market; all operators, manufacturers and traffic managers can compete on a level playing field, enabling the market to meet it's full potential through safer, cheaper and faster digitally enabled and democratised aviation.
Drone deliveries and inspections, air taxis and regional electric aircraft will undoubtably change the way we live our lives, and enormous amounts of money continue to be poured into their development. However, the sector faces a significant challenge – drone vision systems are not good enough to detect aircraft so the risk of collisions requires pilots to maintain visual contact.
Key insights are that:
1 Onboard sensors won’t achieve the required levels of coverage
2 A ground-based sensor network can safely integrate aircraft telemetry data, which can be fuzed with drone positional data – creating a Trusted Airspace Picture
3 This Trusted Airspace Picture allows the integration of drones and manned aircraft; safe separation procedures can be applied; and traffic managers can operate with a full airspace picture

He is a Chartered Engineer and GVC qualified drone pilot working at the forefront of the drone industry, having led teams to deliver a number of drone industry firsts. He is passionate about the benefit drones can provide and draws on a breadth of technology, operations and regulatory expertise to support National Infrastructure, the Emergency Services and the Defence; helping them to understand, develop and integrate the cutting edge of drone capability.
Will has led rapid development of novel UAS platforms and sensors, enabled by state-of-the-art autonomy; developed complex safety cases, such as for BVLOS operation; and helped to design the aviation ecosystems of the future. He is a renound systems thinker, made the Commercial Drone Professional Power List in 2019 and is a proud member of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers.
