Welcome back to The Boat Princess Podcast.

This episode was recorded in the beautiful city of Venice, Italy, where Ethan Zone and I were both attending the ICOMIA World Marinas Conference. It was the perfect setting to sit down and discuss one of my favourite topics—the future of marinas and the boating industry.

Ethan is the CEO of the Tingdene Group, a remarkable British family-owned business whose story is one of innovation, vision and diversification. Founded in 1969 as a manufacturer of high-quality park homes, Tingdene has evolved into one of the UK's leading operators of residential parks, holiday parks and marinas. Today, the Group owns and operates 12 marinas across the UK, has an extensive boat sales network, and continues to develop exciting innovations in floating homes, bringing together its decades of expertise in residential living with the ever-growing appeal of waterfront lifestyles.

During our conversation we discuss where the marina industry is heading, what we need to do to attract younger generations into both boating and careers within our industry, and why creating vibrant marina communities will become increasingly important. We also explore how changing customer expectations, sustainability, technology and floating living could reshape the marinas of tomorrow.

Whether you work in the marine industry, own a marina, or simply love spending time on the water, this is a fascinating conversation that looks beyond where we are today and into what the future may hold.

To find out more about the Tingdene Group and their marinas, visit https://tingdeneboating.com.

And if you'd like to learn more about Empire Marinas Group, our family-owned marinas, boating facilities and everything we do to help people enjoy life on the water, visit https://www.empiremarinas.com.au.

Welcome back to The Boat Princess Podcast.

This episode was recorded when I caught up with Alisdair Martin, now Head of Industry Relations for Boats Group, at IBEX 2025 in Tampa, Florida. Much has changed for Alisdair since we recorded this interview (his title on Linked In for a start), but the conversation is just as relevant today. Alisdair has built an impressive career in the global boating industry and is President of the Marine Marketing of America Association and Vice President of Strategy and Sales at the NMMA too, but as you'll hear, his start in the United States was a little more daunting than most—making his journey to one of the marine industry's most influential leadership roles all the more inspiring. It's a story that's absolutely worth sharing even if a little after it was recorded, and I think you'll really enjoy it.

Our conversation goes far beyond boating marketing. We explore some of the biggest opportunities and challenges facing the recreational boating industry today, including how we attract new people into boating and, perhaps even more importantly, how we retain them for years to come. We discuss the evolving role of boat shows, changing consumer behaviour, customer retention, boating industry trends, and why great marine marketing is about creating lifelong boaters—not simply making the next sale.

Whether you work in the marine industry, exhibit at boat shows, own a marina, sell boats, market marine products and services, or simply love the boating lifestyle, this episode is packed with insights and practical ideas from one of the industry's leading voices.

So grab a coffee, settle in, and enjoy my conversation with Alisdair Martin from Boats Group, recorded live at IBEX 2025.

Welcome back to The Boat Princess Podcast—where we dive into the stories shaping the marine industry, one conversation at a time.

Today’s episode comes to you from a somewhat luxurious and beautifully soundproofed location… the back of a Bentley Flying Spur at the Southampton Boat Show (thank you Bentley Motors). And joining me in the passenger seat is someone who has become a leading voice in marine marketing and communications—Kate O’Sullivan, founder of ADPR.

With a background in PR and a deep understanding of the marine space, Kate has built ADPR into one of the most respected communications agencies in the industry, working with some of the biggest names in boating. Known for her strategic thinking and no-nonsense approach, she’s passionate about helping brands tell better stories and connect more meaningfully with their audiences.

Kate’s journey from employee to employer is one that many aspire to but few truly understand, and in this episode she shares what that transition really looks like behind the scenes. We talk candidly about leadership styles, building a team, and the mindset shift required to step into ownership.

We also zoom out to the bigger picture—what the boating industry could be doing better when it comes to promoting itself, attracting new audiences, and staying relevant in a rapidly changing world.

And of course, Kate breaks down ADPR’s ACE system—her strategic framework that’s helping marine brands communicate more effectively and grow with purpose.

It’s insightful, honest, and set against the unmistakable quiet luxury of a Bentley —so settle in and enjoy the ride.

Maximilian Eagle and I met some 4 years ago when he was very green in this industry. It has been such a pleasure to see him grow with Sunseeker London Group and to bump into him at multiple Boat Shows in Europe.

I have to say, Sunseeker London Group always take such care of me at Boat Shows. They are one of my favourites for relationship building, and this podcast along with some others, was recorded onboard an absolutely stunning Sunseeker at Southampton Boat Show because of their and Sunseeker International's generosity in giving me such a luxurious space to record.

My boating life began on Poole Harbour, in the UK, home of Sunseeker, so I must confess I have always had a soft spot for them.

Max is a young man - still in his 20's and he displays an honesty and openness that is refreshing in the world of Boat Brokerage. In our conversation we delve deep into his career path and the challenges he had to face on the way - one of which was the ultimate challenge anyone can face - thankfully he came through that - for which I and I am sure many many others, especially his family, are truly grateful. You see, when we see Max now, on the Sunseeker stand, presented meticulously with a smart outfit and haircut many would envy, we might make assumptions. Max is the perfect example of what Boat Brokers often have to do themselves - don't judge a book by it's cover. Get to know the real person and build a relationship with them - that is in fact how you build trust for them to buy from you rather than another broker. People buy from people and I am sure that is why Max's career continues to grow.

With boys his age myself, I have to say, without being condescending, that I am incredibly proud of this young man and it was such a moment of joy for me to interview him on my podcast.

I hope you enjoy it. I hope it will encourage other young men and women to become part of the boating industry - we need you. We need your fresh approach, your enthusiasm, your drive, your innovation, your openness, your smiles and frankly we need young people to realise that this industry is in dire need of you. The average age for someone in the US in this industry is 64. That's scary. And something we need to fix.

Hopefully my conversation with Max may be a small start - please pass it on to anyone you think might be inspired to join us.

We often speak about being a minority in a male dominated industry as being a potential disadvantage but maybe sometimes it can actually be an advantage? For oh I don’t know something typical like stunt boat driving for Cameron Diaz???

In my podcast interview with Sarah Donohue at Southampton Boat Show she told me about the opportunity she had to be a stunt driver for Cameron Diaz because she was the ONLY powerboat racing driver that was female in the UK - so maybe sometimes it can actually work to our advantage to be the fewer in numbers occasionally. Having said that, I suspect she would have achieved it anyway competition or not - she's perfect for the role. Sarah is a dynamic and incredible person with a self-belief and confidence in herself that is admirable and aspirational. Listen to my interview with her as we explore how she got into this incredible space and how much she enjoys not only the racing but being part of making this sport safe and accessible to others all over Europe.

Sarah is a keen marine conservation advocate, commercial diver, freediver, stingray diver, climber and marine biologist in study, she was also nominated as a 'Woman of Achievement' at 'Woman of the Year' in London several years ago. One of her proudest moments.

Her energy exudes into the microphone - I know you will enjoy and be inspired by this one. Enjoy Nicky x

Mike Reischmann - CEO Kenyon Grills - his enthusiasm is infectious!

There are some people you meet in business who are clearly building a product… and then there are those who are on a mission.

Mike Reischmann of Kenyon Grills is firmly in the second category.

Sitting down with Mike at IBEX in Florida, you immediately feel it — his enthusiasm is so genuine and so powerful, it’s like he’s saving the world one grill at a time. And in the boating industry, he just might be. With Kenyon Grills cornering over 90% of the market in their space, there’s no doubt he has created an exceptional product that boaters trust.

But what really stood out to me wasn’t just the market share — it was the craftsmanship and innovation behind it. These grills feature unique design elements that Mike has painstakingly developed over the years. Every detail has been considered, refined, and engineered for the marine environment. And understandably, those innovations are carefully protected with patents — when you build something this good, you protect it.

The atmosphere at IBEX made this conversation even more special. There’s an energy at that show — the pulse of the marine industry all in one place — and Mike’s passion fit it perfectly. His energy is truly infectious. You’ll hear it in his voice. You’ll feel it in the way he talks about his team, his customers, and the relentless pursuit of getting it right.

If you’re in the boating space — or simply appreciate entrepreneurs who care deeply about what they create — you’re going to love this conversation.

For more details about Kenyon Grills and their incredible product range, visit https://www.cookwithkenyon.com.

And if you haven’t experienced IBEX yet, make sure you visit https://www.ibexshow.com/ and plan to attend in 2026. It’s an event that brings this entire industry to life.

I hope you enjoy my chat with Mike. If you do, please like and subscribe, and leave us a review so we can continue to champion voices like his and share more stories from leaders shaping our industry.

Let’s dive in.

Welcome to the Cannes Yachting Festival — where the sun hits the water just right, the pontoons are basically catwalks, and you can walk from a 5-metre day boat to a 50-metre statement piece in about three minutes… if you don’t get distracted every six seconds.

Today’s guest is the person who makes this whole floating city run on time: Sylvie Ernoult, Director of the Cannes Yachting Festival — and, frankly, the only person here moving faster than the tenders.

And a quick warning: if you’re listening thinking, “Oh great, an interview at a boat show — relaxed pace, scenic background…” — you’ve never tried to catch Sylvie.
Because here’s what happens: you spot her at Vieux Port, you make eye contact, you wave… and by the time you’ve said “Bonjour,” she’s already halfway to Port Canto, apparently teleporting between meetings, pontoons, and VIP drop-ins like she’s running the Monaco Grand Prix — but in flats, with a radio, and 700 boats waiting for her decision.

So we’re thrilled we managed to intercept her and her successor for long enough to put a microphone in front of them – it’s a quick but meaningful chat!

Sylvie has led the festival since 2013 (the show began in 1977 believe it or not), and 2025 marks her final edition as Director before handing over to her successor, Constance Brément . We’re going to talk about what it takes to run Europe’s biggest in-water boat show, why women make such great show organisers and what happens now as she hands over.

Sylvie Ernoult is the longtime director of the Cannes Yachting Festival, appointed show manager in 2013 (then under Reed Exhibitions France, alongside the Fédération des Industries Nautiques).
She has described having grown up in Le Havre, with the sea “part of her DNA,” and says she has spent almost her entire career connected to the maritime/yachting world.

Since taking leadership, she has overseen the festival’s growth and the operational reality of running a two-site show across Vieux Port and Port Canto, with the event structured into distinct “worlds”/sectors to manage scale and visitor flow.
2025 is a symbolic “handover” year: Sylvie’s final edition as director before passing leadership to Constance Brément.

A few facts about Cannes Yachting Festival

  • The Cannes Yachting Festival was founded in 1977 and has grown into a flagship European boating event.
  • It’s widely positioned as Europe’s largest in-water boat show, staged across two ports: Vieux Port and Port Canto.
  • The show’s modern identity also reflects its increasing international focus; the official site highlights its scale and “world capital of yachting” feel during show week.

2025 show stats

From official festival information and 2025 reporting, the 2025 edition landed around:

  • Nearly 56,000 visitors
  • About 710–711 boats on display
  • Roughly 677–680 exhibitors
  • 147 world premieres (reported as a major jump year-on-year)

Princess Yachts is not a brand that sponsors me or I am directly linked to, but my first decent size motor yacht was a Princess, so it has to be said, I have a soft spot for them. (The hint is in MY brand name)

But there is more to it than having owned one (and for that matter intending to own another in the future). Their values align with mine. Despite being a luxury brand, they have a humble approach to their clients. They believe the clients know more about the boats than they do and thus they as Will expresses in this interview “we have two ears and one mouth and use them proportionally” listening to what their clients need and responding accordingly.

Will and I met for the first time in 2018 when, as a Princess owner visiting the UK, my family and I visited the shipyard – at which they were both generous with their time and open with their tour – allowing us to truly experience where and why these beautiful motoryachts are built. 18,000 Princess Yachts have been built over time and their company is a substantial employer in Plymouth in the UK – with multiple generations working as craftspeople across all of the different build processes – from electrical looms to perfectly finished furniture, from fuel tank building to fibreglass laying, Princess is proud of just how much of their build is done in-house.

Will has been with Princess Yachts 23 years this year, joining just before Southampton Boat Show in 2003. In his first few days he experienced the product first-hand on a delivery run to the show from Plymouth, Cornish Pasty in hand (on the flybridge of course so the crumbs blew away and didn’t upset the stylists at the show) - what a way to start!

In this interview we discuss how his boating life started, how stabilisation has changed how people go boating, the new products Princess are bringing out to cater to those client needs they have been listening to, and their return to building Superyachts – their last 40m was delivered some 7 years ago – so this is not new to them – it’s returning to a space they know meeting the demands of a market demanding bigger boats but also a client base that they don’t want to lose to another brand simply because they don’t have a boat big enough.

I hope you enjoy my chat with Will – aboard a beautiful Princess flybridge at Cannes Yachting Festival.

Let me know what you think in a review please!

UPDATE: Excitingly our new office base and Podcast Studio is coming together in the Marine Precinct in Coomera on the Gold Coast – looking forward to sharing more with you in the near future! Nicky x

I am finishing off 2025 with a very important guest who leads an incredibly inspirational project that is dear to my heart in my continuous goal to have more women join me in the boating industry and boating generally.

Victoria Low and I met in 2023 at the ICOMIA Congress in La Rochelle. I interviewed her then but she's since changed to lead an incredibly important project she was actually part of the creation of 10 years ago.

A meeting after a sailing event which illustrated that the guys were being given opportunities for employment but women were not....inspired some incredible women to create a group which had an aspiration to "Create a group to change the world".

The Magenta Project has this on it's website:

Mission & Objectives

Sailing is a unique sport—a test of skill, endurance, and the interplay

between humans, technology, and nature. It is one of few professional

sports where men and women compete together. Yet, despite this,

only 5% of professional sailors are women, and a mere 3%

represented across the entire marine industry.

Across the marine industry, from the intense environment onboard

race boats to the practical settings of boatyards and the wider marine

industry, women navigate a complex landscape of challenges that

mirror those of the corporate boardroom.

These hurdles extend beyond simple discrimination, encompassing

limited access to opportunities, support, difficulties in obtaining

certifications, and the pervasive impact of systemic bias.

Recognising these inequities, The Magenta Project, an

award-winning global charity, is dedicated to building a

sustainable network and implementing impactful programmes.

Our mission is simple: to ensure greater equity and inclusion

for women in the sport and the wider marine industry,

by working to dismantle the barriers that hinder their full

participation and advancement.

Fairline Yachts has had its tumultuous times – has it reached safe hands now?

The boating industry is going through a transition period for the next 10 years or so, in my view. Those who created the manufacturing businesses, marinas and small enterprises are entering their retirement phase and, as a result, someone has to take over — or sadly, sometimes they simply shut down.

Often the skill set isn’t available in adequate numbers to pass it on, or the generational handover is not there, or simply not interested. In some cases, investment funds or private equity have recognised this shift and are entering a market that is entirely new to them.

It’s a unique industry. With funny words, unusual problems, and a solid requirement for reinvestment. What some of these businesses have historically lacked, however, is strong financial management skills, clear growth strategies and financial backing (banks have, for some unknown reason, always been extremely cautious with LVRs in this sector).

And so we get to my next podcast interviewee.

Starting in the banking industry before most of us would normally leave school, Paul Taylor brings a wealth of financial experience and strength as the new owner of Fairline Yachts, alongside his partner Robin Southwell OBE. Paul also had a period invested in marinas, with the second-largest European marina at Vilamoura in Portugal.

It was a delight to interview Paul on the back of a Fairline Targa 50 at the Southampton Boat Show. Having someone with a brain like his to delve into brings insight, intriguing ideas and genuine hope that Fairline is now in steady hands.

I hope you enjoy it.

Today I have something a little different for you. I am venturing outside the Boating Industry into the Hospitality Industry and the timing of the release of this podcast episode is critical.

As you know my ethos is to support women in business. A rising tide lifts all boats. This is a woman I have admired for a very long time as she quietly achieved in the background of a very famous husband and someone today I can gratefully call a friend. She is someone that has done so much more than many people realise, changed her career and adapted strongly to her new circumstances and through it all faced some challenges and moments many do not even know of.

In this conversation we explore topics that actually reveal our similarities and endless connections and we discuss what's happening in her world, including the very exciting new restaurant at Coogee Sydney, which literally opens on Monday - 1st December.

Thus the crucial timing of this release. She, as a PR expert, has got it covered but that doesn't mean I don't want to shout from the rooftops my support for her new venture and encourage as many as possible to enjoy what is the great cuisine (which is actually always complex yet simple flavours allowing the ingredients to shine through) of Rick Stein.

Rick is of course well known for his TV shows - truth be told he is my go to at the end of a stressful day - his dulcet tones about all things food and beautiful locations in Europe are the perfect escape.

I hope you enjoy my chat with Sas Stein, this bubbly, humble, high achieving human in London earlier this year.

Big thanks to Brown's Hotel in Mayfair for hosting us in one of the most beautiful suites I have ever seen.

Here's the restaurant you need to visit soon:

And here's my Girls Getaways location which is literally a 4 minute walk to Rick Steins at Mollymook (who buys a house based on it's location to a restaurant? Well me I guess! - You'll get that story in this episode)

I always say the best "job" you can have is one you create for yourself. I am a perfect example - I offered to help out at the Boat Brokerage at our marina when my kids were now at school and I had some more time on my hands and I have now been part of this amazing Boating Industry since - we sold 300+ boats in 7 years in that brokerage so I kind of get what's involved in brokering boats - and I can tell you it is not nearly as easy or as glamorous as it looks. Climbing under black covers on a stifling hot day, cleaning toilets, cleaning bilges, explaining why the owner needs to spend more money - we get to do it all - but the only bit you invariably see is the showing of the boat as you should see it after we have done all that :)

When you go out on a successful sea trial in the fresh air and see the smile on the new owners face though - that's a feeling that makes it all worth while. From doing the negotiations to securing another listing brokerage can be thrilling, frustrating, joyous and disappointing all in one day - which is why it is such an interesting business to be in.

Brokerage now though is moving into different times. Social media is now an essential part of the process and how you present the boat is everything. That's why I wanted to interview Olivia. Her new business kept popping up in my Instagram feed over the last few years and it impressed me. It was clear they not only had a handle on boats but a handle on marketing and presentation too.

Thus my interview with Olivia at Cannes Yachting Festival delves into how this all came about - her path is one she has basically created herself - and thus she has created the best "job" she could ever have. Join me as she explains how it all happened, why it all happened and what she thinks the future holds.

Enjoy.

As I fly to Monaco Yacht Show tomorrow I thought I might share one of my favourite superyacht brand interviews with you.

Vasco Buonpensiere is one of those people that charms you from the outset but you know underneath is a man that expects nothing but perfection and uses his excellent mind to do so whilst bringing the best out in others to achieve it.

Commencing his career in law and becoming an extremely successful one, whilst lucrative, was not the life he wanted for himself.

And so he entered the world of Boat Brokerage.

Now he creates with his technically talented partner Ennio Cecchini yachts designed to pursue true exploration whilst in the height of luxury.

"I believe when you reach a certain spend on a yacht you should be able to determine the capability of that yacht not be restricted by it." says Vasco in this interview. As such there are currently Cantiere delle Marche yachts circumnavigating the globe but also resting in the mediterranean for the beauty of it.

So as you listen to my chat with Vasco hear the joy in his voice of creating masterpieces for exacting clients and his clever business brain of how with a few laughs along the way.

For more information on these spectacular brand see:

And if you are a client in Australia please contact my dear friends Paul Miletta and Domenico Giuffre - more lovely people to work with you would be hard pushed to find.

Ok, so I will admit, as an Aussie that grew up in the UK that is constantly chasing the sunshine for my boating, Scotland would not be the first place I would think of to go boating. But then I tried it. And what a glorious boating experience it was.

You see, my dear friend Ashlee and her husband Mike own a Freedom Boat Club on Loch Lomond in Scotland and on a recent trip to the other side of the world we decided to add their location to our itinerary of boating industry visits and we discovered what an amazing place it was. Loch Lomond has some 35 places to stop off and enjoy something to drink or eat or an activity to participate in so it in fact lends itself beautifully to the Freedom Boat Club model.

So what is Freedom Boat Club and why did Ashlee and Mike decide to open one?

Freedom Boat Club is now a division of Brunswick since they acquired the brand in 2019.

It makes perfect sense for a boat manufacturer to acquire a Boat Club Franchise brand after all it secures boat sales of their boats but also is a way that curious people that would like to get into boating but literally have no idea how to do so, are brought into boating experiences in the easiest and most risk averse way and may well at some point convert to owners.

The model includes boats that are new or almost new, training, check in and checkout procedures each use and a joining fee and monthly fee rather than an outright boat purchase or having to have a boat sitting on the driveway and fighting for usage rights at the Boat Ramp with other boat owners.

Ashlee clearly got into it, and you will hear this in her voice, because she believed more people should be boating and that indeed SHE should be doing MORE boating. Having a club like this literally forces you to:

Go boating taking prospective clients out and in events

Spend time getting boats ready and taking care of them

Mixing with people that love boating

And as a mum – it exposes her kids to not only the world of boating but the world of running your own business.

So I hope you enjoy my chat with Ashlee.

She will reveal some of the challenges of mixing motherhood and business and her strategies for handling that (this is not their only business) and what boating really is like in this stunning part of the world.

We are Freedom Boat Club Owners in Australia too at our fabulous Empire Marina locations at Empire Marina Bobbin Head and Empire Marina Lake Macquarie and in Pittwater too – so if you live in Sydney, Northern Beaches, Central Coast, Sydney's North Shore, Lake Macquarie or Newcastle and would like to dip your toes into boating or maybe you’ve sold your boat and wish you hadn’t or you’ve got a busy family life and would still like to boat but don’t have time to even think about the boat let alone care for it, then get in touch.

Cherise Reedman – Yacht Pearls of Wisdom and the Superyacht Laundry Podcast

Working on a superyacht can be mentally challenging – in fact the tragic recent loss of young crew members has brought this subject front and centre all over the world – but what is being done about it? And how about the crew members that leave yachting and then hit the land without knowing what to do next or how to stay connected?

I know our The Boat Princess network here in Australia is one that brings connection, support and joy to those that attend our events – we’ll be doing some more work on this in the future to make the connection stronger because we recognise how important connection truly is – loneliness is rife and we want to fix that but what about further afield?

In this episode I have a very real chat about this and more with Cherise – a former head steward in the superyacht industry who now runs a podcast and network to try and address some of these issues but most importantly provide support and bring together those that need that support.

We discuss a whole bunch of important subjects in this podcast – from the financial side of being in the superyacht industry to the choices women have to make, from challenging the mindset that all women have to strive for a high flying career when in fact they want to travel and build practical skills instead, to how difficult it is sometimes for women to prioritise being a mum in a world of expectation and other demands.

Cherise has a fantastically British sense of humour so whilst we discuss these serious subjects it’s interjected with much entertainment and laughter too!

I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did.

In fact you can study and start your career in Theatre Production Management..and jazz bars.

In this interview I chat with Frank Hugelmeyer – President and CEO at National Marine Manufacturers Association about his career and his love of boating.

Frankie as I rather cheekily call him, is a dear friend that I have come to know through ICOMIA. As the new President of ICOMIA (The International Council of Marine Industry Associations) he leads the world in recreational boating bringing the MIA’s and BIA’s and as many boating associations of the world as possible together to discuss and hopefully solve the barriers, the struggles, the limitations, the new regulations and the successes they are all affected by – it’s amazing how many of them are the same the world over.

Given he’s been doing that for the NMMA for the last 6 years I would suggest he’s the perfect candidate for the task.

Frank is a man that loves to rise to a challenge.

Check out how he introduces himself on his Linked In below:

“Here’s something very important to know about me: I love to inspire teams to do extraordinary things, especially when the outcome or idea has never been done before.

Climb a mountain? Check.
Build a better sandbox? Let’s do it.
Grow an entire industry? I'm all in.

Striving to accomplish what seems hard and sometimes impossible is why I bring a pioneering spirit to every encounter, challenge conventional thinking and discover new ways to learn and grow.”

Our chat covers where his love of boating began, his passion for this industry and what he sees for the future of it.

You see, he finishes his Linked In with:
There is one more thing that I am very passionate about…living a life-well-lived and encouraging others to do the same. So go fly fish Alaska's Kongakut, paddle Costa Rica’s Pacuare River, climb Italy’s Dolomites or dive Australia’s Great Barrier Reef.

You’ll note 3 of those activities involves boating. That’s because Frank doesn’t just work in the boating industry, he truly believes in how much it enriches peoples lives and what a disappointment life would be without it - and that’s why he diplomatically fights for it every day.

You can follow Frank here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/frankhugelmeyer/

And connect with his amazing team at the NMMA here: https://www.nmma.org/

Zandra Sissing - Senior Manager - Marina - Red Sea Global may be an articulate and softly spoken interviewee but she has an underlying strength of character that suggests she will not tolerate incompetence nor should you mess with her. Perhaps that softly spoken quality pertains to the secrets she is to reveal to the world in the near future as the Red Sea becomes the next destination for boaters from all over the world.

You see Red Sea Global are creating destinations that feel out of this world and yet at the same time are taking great care to do everything to not only protect our world but in fact nurture it further. With a strong sense of environmental consciousness yet an excitement and warmth to welcome guests and yachts to enjoy this incredible part of the world,

Zandra shares her passion for this project in Saudi Arabia as this region starts to turn its focus to a more tourism orientated economy, but in a very special way. I’ve seen the photos - the resorts are almost like pure art and the colours of the water are simply mind blowing. So join me as we explore how Zandra got to this point, what she loves about what she does and what brings her joy in her work in this unique and wonderful location.

All of us - no matter what gender - go through moments of self doubt. Women though - maybe more so. In this podcast Sarah inspires us with how she overcame her fears to become so capable in the Coastguard - inspiring her own daughter at the same time.

She has taken chances in life - including moving to New Zealand from the UK without having even visited - but those chances have meant she has said yes to more in the future - like saying yes to being on this podcast.

We discuss self belief, and go through the fear of public speaking with some terrific advice to help you get through your understanding of this skill that so many fear.

Building confidence in doing something can literally change your life. In every aspect of it - find out Sarah's views on this and listen to her encouragement to others to do so.

Sarah talks about the importance of having women within a team and what they bring to the organisation and her love of teaching kids and making a difference.

I hope you enjoy this podcast recorded at Auckland Boat Show.

I thoroughly enjoyed spending time with Sarah and thank Dean at Protector and Rayglass Boats for the introduction and for the fun we had Sarah driving the awesome Protector at speed!

Small businesses usually start because of a need, a problem that needs to be solved or a sheer passion someone has to drive it.

Wildchix, the brainchild of Isabell is all 3. She saw a need that women were missing out on sports she loved because a training environment women actually felt comfortable in wasn't available.

She saw a problem that the bias women experience often through no malice at all, but sheer bias, meant that they were relying on their male partners to enjoy such sports as fishing, and she has a passion that you viscerally feel through her voice in this podcast.

Taking the brave step of leaving a perfectly good full time position to launch - Isabell has created a business that trains women, and only women, about the recreational sports and adventure activities she loves. In this episode we delve into what that actually involved and how she feels having jumped off the cliff of salary safety.

We also talk about the challenges she faced that made her see what was needed, her love of boats and what she has achieved in her career including selling a substantial number of boats (often to someone who would ask - "Is there someone I can talk to about the boats please?")

This is an episode full of some things you won't agree with (because we are all different) and yet some you will completely align with - whether you are a woman OR a man.

We also talk about Imposter Syndrome briefly and I mention a book available on Audible by the amazing Dr Kim Granland. That book it turns out isn't on Audible YET - but is available on the link below - it gives some great strategies for overcoming Imposter Syndrome in a beautifully simple, positive and relatable way and is a ridiculously good price....so why not see what it's about.

Enjoy this episode, check out Isabell's business and book in for one of their courses - I know I will one day - because we can never learn enough about boating, or fishing, or being in nature (and New Zealand surely is one of the very best versions of that)- and that's the beauty of this boating lifestyle - our brains are continuously learning - what a joy that is in itself.

Dubai Boat Show was an amazing experience for me this year. I met some incredible people, presented on stage, enjoyed the media walk with fellow marine media and best of all recorded some fantastic interviews. One of which you are about to hear.

Wyndham Tops (great name huh) is a friend of mine through ICOMIA and he is a really interesting guy to listen to. With a fantastic history as to how he got into the boating industry and now working on one of THE most exciting projects in the world for yachting I wanted to share his story with you. He then suggested we include John W R Paul aswell to give another perspective to the marine industry in this region and share more information about the Leisure Marine Association MENA. This Association was only founded in 2020 but is so important to bring the industry together in this region to allow them to have more strength and ability to work with legislators, authorities and other stakeholders.

John leads Exalto Emirates, a prominent marine equipment distributor and retailer in the Middle East. John has 29 years of experience in the GCC, sharing his expertise with the marine community and now with you, our listeners.

Exalto Emirates LLC was founded in 1995 and is a wholesaler of marine equipment. The company represents over 80 reputed international manufacturers of high-quality marine components supplying to pleasure and commercial boat builders, shipyards, service providers, fleet owners and to the retail market thru a network of dealers. Operating from the head office in Sharjah and branch office in Dubai, the company supplies within the UAE, other GCC countries and across the greater Middle East, Africa, and Indian subcontinent.

Wyndham Tops is Senior Director for Marine and Marina Mobility Operations at Red Sea Global, with extensive experience in marina management. An active sailor and certified Yacht Master Ocean, Wyndham has held leadership roles at Abu Dhabi Maritime, Emirates Palace Marina, and Ferretti Group. His expertise spans marina operations, community harbors, and ferry terminals.

Now at Red Sea Global (RSG), he's working on projects where luxury, sustainability, and innovation converge to redefine how development is done. They are spearheading new development and tourism models, putting people and planet first to deliver projects that actively enhance the well-being of customers, communities, and environments. If you have seen any photos of the new resorts (Roxy Jacenko posted some just this weekend) you'll have seen they are mind blowingly beautiful and frankly, almost out of this world. Bringing boaters and yachties to this region is so incredibly exciting.

Enjoy our chat and please give us a review!

Su Lin Cheah

It’s amazing to find how many people “find themselves” in the boating industry. My next guest, the fabulous Su Lin Cheah did exactly that when a friend of hers – who recognised her talents and abilities - asked her to join him in his boat brokerage business.

In doing so Su Lin faced the challenges many women did at that time of being put in a box of assistant, secretary or even girlfriend - but above all of this she rose to the challenge and became one of the people that truly raised the profile of the cruiser market in Asia. Su Lin is a people person. And we all know - that people buy from people. Boat brokerage is about relationships, and we talk about this in depth in this episode as we discuss great strategies that can be used in boat sales but even more so behaviours that can change attitudes and perceptions.

She started as a graphic artist but with a career spanning more than 30 years in customer service operations, marketing and sales distribution management, Su Lin brings a unique local-global-local perspective and insight into a region of diverse cultures and business practices.

So, her current role at ICOMIA in the Asia-Pacific region compliments her own personal mantra that there is strength in collaboration and cooperation, and working as a collective will always benefit all parties, in resilience and sustainable growth.

It's a mantra I like to live by myself. Nothing makes me happier than seeing other entrepreneurs (especially women) thrive and nothing makes me happier than bringing them together to help each other – a rising tide lifts all boats.

Our next event will do just that. Keep an eye on my Instagram @theboatprincess or sign up on our website www.theboatprincess.com so you don’t miss out on the details

Life is full of incredible moments when you make them happen, and for me interviewing Abeer AlShaali – Deputy Managing Director of Gulf Craft Inc and Captain Patricia Caswell – General Manager of Gulf Craft Services onboard the very boat that Mohammed Hussein Alshaali Chairman of Gulf Craft) calls his own was one of those. I know you are going to listen to this one at least twice.

You see interviewing Abeer is a delight. She is one of the most articulate and interesting people I have ever met and is it any wonder their business Gulf Craft Inc has been expanding whilst some other boat builders have been retracting. Is this because they are in a part of the world that is continuing to grow or is it because they are meeting the market worldwide on what the market are asking for? I would suggest it’s both.

Captain Patricia Caswell has had a distinguished career in the yachting sector. Currently serving as General Manager of Gulf Craft Services, she previously held the role of Quality Control Manager. With extensive hands-on experience as a yacht captain, Patricia ensures the highest standards in yacht building, overseeing processes from design to delivery. Notably, she played a pivotal role in the successful sea trials of the Majesty 175, the world’s largest composite production yacht.

She was recently elected as Vice Chair of the Leisure Marine Association (LMA) for 2025.

If you are not aware of Gulf Craft Inc as a boat brand let me help you out a bit here.

Gulf Craft are an Emirati brand built in the UAE. (I know that kind of doubles up - but sometimes we need a deeper understanding in regions we don’t know well if we haven’t been there)

They produce 5 brands:

Majesty Yachts – for those of you that have chartered “One World” in Sydney she is one of these

Nomad Yachts – for those of you that have chartered “BlueStone” in Sydney she is a Nomad 101 and in fact she is featured on the Gulf Craft Website in of course the iconic position right in front of the beautiful Sydney Opera House.

Oryx – these are fast and fabulous Sports Cruisers designed for fishing or just having fun

Silver Craft – Fishing and Day boats

And Finally

Silver Cat – their name gives them away of course as their Catamaran range (of the motor variety)

So, as you can see, they’re covering quite a range of client types and budgets. This in itself is a clever strategy as most of us know in the boating industry - most boat owners will start small and grow big as time in their life and their bank account progresses.

Their dominance at Dubai Boat Show with 18 boats on display showed not only their versatility but also their support of the industry in this region.

In this podcast we delve into what they have done in their company to attract more women and what they do especially for them to make them feel supported. Surely though, the most obvious move they have made is engage two strong women at the very helm of the business. You see once the team look up to that, and the world sees the success they achieve – that’s when changes happen, that’s when others can see what they can do and are encouraged to aim high (this is the difference with women, some of us need that). That’s when other companies think about following the lead too. So, thank you to Gulf Craft Inc for being one of those showing the way for women in our industry. I know some think we don’t need to dwell on this still, but the reality is, we still need to shine a light, we still need to be there to encourage, support and celebrate the progress.

About Gulfcraft:

Gulf Craft envisages success not as the reward for our innovation, but as a motivation to set out on a path of difference, with dedication and commitment, while creating world-class masterpieces that truly belong to the waters of the world. From manufacturing fishing boats to megayachts, and standing amongst the top superyacht builders around the world, the company nurtures and preserves each brand’s distinctive identity.

Since the company’s inception in 1982, Gulf Craft has grown to become one of the top seven shipyards in the world. From being a builder of small fishing boats in modest premises, a genuine passion for the sea led Gulf Craft to establish its credentials as a leader of innovation and technology in the yachting industry.

With five brands in the product portfolio, ranging from 32 to 175 feet, Gulf Craft manufactures yachts and boats that appeal to a wide audience such as touring passenger's vessels, Silvercraft family day boats, Oryx Sport Cruisers, Nomad Adventure Yachts, and the flagship Majesty Yachts. Utilizing advanced technology, powerful engineering, timeless design, and world-class craftsmanship, Gulf Craft is today recognized as one of the world’s premier yacht manufacturers.

Being part of the boating industry means I get to call some pretty amazing people friends. Alberto Sonino is one of those friends. As an owner of a marina in Venice with an extraordinary history of creating a now idyllic environment from a wasteland, to stories of organising the boats for the James Bond movie Casino Royale scenes set in Venice - Alberto has some stories many would love to hear, and so it is great to share them here with you in this interview.

Our chat took place at the METSTRADE show in 2024 - probably one of the best events for networking - alongside the WORLD MARINAS CONFERENCE of which he is one of the main organisers this year. The World Marinas Conference is an event anyone can attend - and it's always not only a great way to catch up with marina owners and operators from all over the world, but every location loves to "show off" their location to it's best - so can you imagine what Alberto and the Venice team will put together? I can't wait to see. See you there in October folks.

In the meantime if you would like to meet Alberto he's in the Italian section of the halls at Dubai International Boat Show this week.

Interviewing Michele J Goldsmith is like gaining wise knowledge from a woman with such an array of world experience that you feel enlightened by the end of it. Michele has been in the boating industry for so long it is part of her identity. From working with intricate necessary boating products to being a superstar of the boating industry media world, her journey has been, as in all boating industry ones, varied and interesting. During this time she has gained substantial awards for her contribution to industry, gathered deep data that helps us all see what the future holds in the boating industry, and even visited Everest. Yet through it all her continuous drive, grace, and considered conversation has been a beacon for many women in this industry to look up to, be guided by and be grateful for. Michele has organised, and still does, some amazing female dominated events at key industry events like Miami Boat Show and METSTRADE and each one is attended by an abundance of women looking to hear, as usual, the positive messages she gives about what we can do, and what we can achieve. I am lucky enough to count Michele as a friend. Lunch with her is always filled with inspiration, determination and a generosity of spirit to see others rise that is a rare and very special quality not everyone possesses, but radiates in droves from Michele.

There are some fascinating stats in this podcast....make sure you listen to it right to the end.

We've had a short break from publishing episodes at the end of 2024 but believe me we are coming back with a bang in 2025 - or should I say a POP of Champagne as my first guest for this years' series is the incredible Madame Natalie Vranken of Pommery Champagne. This strong, determined and vivacious woman lives and breathes Champagne but not in the way many might interpret but in a passion for creating the very best version of it for the rest of us to enjoy both in the Champagne itself but in the way we get to enjoy it too. Pommery was created by a woman...a widow that had the foresight to invest in herself and her "brand" when "brand" was not the catchword it is today. Madame Pommery took great risks but made astute decisions that still stand today in creating what Pommery is and will always be - a unique and beautiful experience. And indeed this is what they always focus on in bringing the brand to market - they create experiences their clients will never forget - partnering with locations and unique offerings that create a memory - so that when you next sip their champagne that memory is brought back into your mind. So why did I, the Boat Princess, want to interview Madame Vranken? That's simple. One: She's an amazing businesswoman that you have to hear speak - she shares the qualities one needs to be an entrepreneur and some amazing life advice. Two - boating and Champagne are a natural partner - they both instil amazing memories and they are both a luxury but one we should only aim for the best version of. If you haven't tasted Pommery then make sure you do - then you'll know why it's not just the colour of this brand (that glorious blue much like my own brand) that pulls me in. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. The privilege of what I do is simply getting to meet amazing people like Madame Vranken and soaking up their experience, advice and passion - it's a privilege I never take for granted and one I love sharing with you all, my dear listeners all over the world - whom I also never take for granted.

Now I will admit, my travels around the world have seen me cross paths with many within and upon the fringes of the boating and marine industry, but this time I found myself in the same room as Joe, Lynch. The CEO of ICOMIA.

His story starts when he was 6 years old, when his parents bought a boat and a book and during the summer of 1976 they took their three children and the dog sailing.

His passion was spurred by his circle of friends who range from amateur boaters to olympic athletes. Joe shares the accessibility of boating, sailing clubs and contributions of the community in competition and connection.

Joe is a natural leader, with a deep understanding of his own personal limitations but has the collective knowledge of contacts that can solve the problem or make the difference around the world.

For the past year, Joe has made his mission to listen and learn from the people, free from commercial bias and free from personal bias, and be there for the good of the industry.

ICOMIA is helping countries grow their industry and build opportunities within the network on projects to maintain contemporaneous initiatives. To add value, Joe has learnt how to leverage the good will of membership and find the resources, promising to write the book about the application of commercialising the not for profit principles.

ICOMIA is very lucky to have the support of a volunteer board that supports this industry and you can find out more about Joe and ICOMIA right here.

Don't forget to check out my other episode with Darren Vaux about the ICOMIA research into sustainability.

There is something soothing and special about being on or near the water. Whether it's seeing the vast horizon that opens up a whole world of endless possibilities, showing us there is always more to look forward to, or the gentle rocking of the waves against the shore line, resetting the sand to new, my travels have continued to open doors to the people who have build a life connected to the ocean and with them a new perspective I haven't always seen.

In this episode I welcome to the podcast - Suzy Chisholm, the innovating co-founder of start up - Swiss Ocean Tech, Safe Anchoring for Sailor, Ship and Sea, and officially, a communications expert.

So as we dive into this conversation, she shares her unofficially role as 'building bridges between people and ideas', bringing people together who strive for that common ground. Her secret in almost all cases, can be found with the right approach and attention.

So what does it take to create a unique connection between two unknowns. The power of direction. There are so many ocean references I can make about Suzy's philosphy, but I will let you hear then for yourself.

Where we found common ground was at the heart of doing with intention because as she will explain, when everyone understands the mission at hand, they automatically pull in the same direction. There will be no shortage of struggles, hurdles or setbacks, so if we are all heading in the same direction, we are always able to stay on course.

One more thing, Spring is here, and these gorgeous days right now and the ones you could be spending on, in or around the water - come and see us at Bobbin Head Marina, our Waterside Bistro is the perfect place to be.

Welcome back to Part 2 of my conversation with Jasper Smith. If you haven't heard Part 1 - go back and listen and this episode will make so much more sense.

'Without a healthy ocean, we don't have healthy humans'. That is the philosphy of today's guest, Jasper Smith, a design engineer who has previously build the worlds biggest online game play arena, is now applying his skill and passion to embed protective measures and experience to the sea state.

I met up with Jasper Smith when I was last in the UK, and spoke with him about his connection to the water, which included living on a barge to exploring Alaska with his family and friends. Jasper has spent years making memories, media and movies as well as starting the World Ocean Trust.

'It's astounding to me that we buy a superyacht and staff it and then leave it in the marina for 10 months of the year. Redundancy is key."

Jasper's ambitions are powered by passion to build and design boats for adventure, and the lifestyle he knows we want to lead. From the smaller vessel to a 60ft yacht with a hybrid system and 15 -20 hours of silent running. They are designed to be off grid for three months, comfortable inside, easy to drive providing security in preparedness.

Today I welcome another two inspirational women from Australia's first America's Cup Team that will be competing in the covetted event being held in Barcelona this September. I love bringing to story of first to you and feel honoured to be sharing with you, not only their personal stories but the Australian story and the connection to our world famous win back in 1983.

The America’s Cup is the world’s oldest sporting trophy, established in 1851 and is the most prestigious international yachting prize. Informally known as the Auld Mug, the trophy is fought for via match races between a defender nation and challenger nation.

When John Bertrand skippered Australia II with its Ben Lexcen designed winged keel, it broke the 132-year winning streak to claim the Cup for Australia. The Confederation of Australian Sport billed it the ‘greatest team performance in 200 years of Australian sport’.

Annie Wilmont grew up sailing on Sydney Harbour, spending most of her life on the water. She was firstthrown in a Manly Junior at 4 years old and has loved the sport ever since.

Annie is a member of the Australian Sailing Team, campaigning successfully in the 49er FX. She placed 5th at the World Championship 2024 in Lanzarote, and has a proven track record demonstrating exceptional skill and experience across multiple sailing classes, consistently achieving notable success and championships in various categories.

In her youth career Annie was named Youth World Champion in 2016 and secured multiple first-place titles, including All Female Australian National, Australian Youth, New Zealand National and German National Champion in the same year.

Lisa Darmanin represented the Australian Sailing Team from 2013-2023. She won a Silver Medal in the Nacra 17 class at the Rio 2016 Olympics and finished 5th at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Throughout her career, Lisa has consistently delivered outstanding results at World Championships in the Nacra class. Between 2014 and 2020, she clinched a total of 4 World Championships medals.

Lisa was awarded Australian Female Sailor of the Year in 2015, 2016, and 2020 and UNSWFemale Athlete of the Year in 2011, as well as the Ben Lexcen Scholarship from 2011 to 2013.

Beyond her competitive pursuits, Lisa is a commentator and presenter for sailing on the international stage, sharing her insights and passion for the sport with a global audience

Welcome back to The Boat Princess podcast and today I am coming to you from the other side of the world at the ICOMIA conference in Paris'. In this episode I am having the big boating conversations with Ann Dunbar, the executive director of IBEX, International Boat Builders Exhibition and Conference, which serves the North American market. As Covid took over the world, Ann was faced with cancelling live shows and exhibitions and and a workforce crisis. She became instrumental in the road to recovery, leading IBEX, alongside other leadership teams from ISEO (who have just celebrated 60 years of community and commardary).

Ann shares how even at that level of leadership coming together at the live shows and sharing conversations on stage or ideas in workshops is how they stay connected to the front line and keep the heart beat of the industry going and growing.

With a love of boats for as long as she can remember, Ann actually completed a degree in communications and filming after school and moved to LA with the dream to make movies, and work behind the scenes in production during the days of the new and emerging MTV era. Ann recalls facing the barriers of entry and gender issues, getting her first introduction to the marine industry with an invitation to work at the Long Beach boat show, working the booth over a 10 day show. She describes the experience and now provides the advice of taking up opportunities even when you don't feel ready. 'It was so much fun meeting new people, and I just love boats.'

From 'manning' the booth her performance landed her a job selling advertising in the marine industry. 'My job was to go to boat shows and talk to people - it was so aligned.'

Ann eventually moved back to east coast selling that incredible tech called faxing before transferring her skills to IBEX selling exhibition space in 2001. Ann shares her 'breaking the glass ceiling story' and the secrets when it comes to taking on leadership in a male dominated arena, and is well qualified as you'll hear her humbly explain how she transformed the experience of Boat Shows around the world.

Enjoy, let me know what you think and I will see you on the water soon.

So if you thought I could talk underwater, I've found my match. Lily and Tom, From Hullbot.com share their amazing story with me in this two-part series. I found this conversation absolutely fascinating as we take a glimpse of the not so-distant future of the benefits technology has in the marine industry.

Hullbot is an underwater drone.....yep underwater drone.

A bit like the creepy crawly for your backyard pool, this robot enables marine vessels to clean early and often, reducing drag and saving fuel. It's application for the 12 million boats around the world takes out the danger and the physical effort required to clean the hull of a boat - whilst in the water.

Now if you head back to the episodes where I talk about the importance of maintenance with Jess Gatt from Logistix who provides innovative solutions for protection & prevention of corrosion in the marine environment or Nona Pederson formerly the 26-year-old General Manager of Propspeed and now the co-founder of YESSS marine services, and of course the most recent research, Propel Our Future from ICOMIA, and the interview with Darren Vaux,

This low-cost hardware, and a platform architecture are core to a technology roadmap of agile robotics that will improve ocean health. And that is exciting. Just another example of the kind of careers and direction within the boating and marine industry people can explore. Stay tuned as Episode 2 from Lily and Tom will be out soon.

Jeff Wasil is the Director of the National Marine Manufactures Association (NMMA) and I caught up with him at the recent Miami Boat Show. Not only is he responsible for environment, health, and safety at the NMMA he also leads global marine regulatory development and is a key member of marine industry technical projects.

With over 20 years of experience in emissions compliance, he was the perfect guest to follow ICOMIA President Darren Vaux's podcast where over two episode he shared the findings and learnings that Jeff goes deep and wide about in this episode.

Jeff serves as the Chairman of the International Council of Marine Industry Associations (ICOMIA) Marine Engine Committee. He is the Chairman of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) Board of Directors. He has also served as a project leader for NMMA’s marine greenhouse gas emissions task force.

In the last fifteen years this has let him to publish and present many technical papers on marine emissions including particulate matter, gaseous emissions, bioassay analysis, life-cycle emissions and alternative fuels even testifying before the U.S Congressional Committee on Science Space and Technology.

We talk all things ethanol-extended fuels and biofuels such as biobutanol and report Propelling Our Future.

Jeff is an avid lifetime boater and understands and appreciates the joys of recreational boating and in not surprisingly he grew up boating and fishing. What I loved about this conversation was Jeff's unique ability to break-down complex technical issues into easily understood topics and his humbleness in receiving multiple Environmental Awards including The Business Friend of the Environment Award, Green Masters Award, and The Earth Day Sustainability Award.

You can find any one of his 100+ published articles and media including the Washington Examiner, Journal Sentinel, Boat US Magazine, Boating industry, Trade Only, Journal Times, as well as multiple outdoor recreation magazines.

This is a Part 1 of this episode, where I sat down with Darren Vaux, the President of ICOMIA, who have commissioned The Pathways to Decarbonisation for the Recreational Marine Industry report, with leading global engineering consulting firm, Ricardo plc,.

The report investigated propulsion technologies across nine common recreational watercrafts to compare the impact of lifetime GHG emissions, financial costs, usability, performance, range and infrastructure implications.

This is a special episode as Darren shares how 'for the first time, we've united the global recreational marine industry around our most comprehensive, peer-reviewed research to explore opportunities that could reduce recreational boats’ carbon emissions, giving us the data we need to begin educating policy makers, our stakeholder community, and boaters on the varied decarbonisation solutions unique to our industry. This new research provides guidance on the focus for the innovations we can begin exploring today to create a better boating experience that reduces our environmental footprint.

You can read the report here.

I know you are going to find this a very interesting, informative and influential executive summary of the report, so stay in touch as Part 2 is not far away.

In this episode I'm chatting with the Creative Director, Dasha Moranova who not only set out to revolutionise the superyacht spa experience, with invisible technologies to create an AI-driven wellness project dubbed Senses" but won a sustainability award for the design.

With a love of travel and new challenges, she has collaborated with other designers and women in the boating industry to create sustainable, efficient changes to protect our oceans and seas.

Clare Ferandier-sicard has evolved from wanting to solve the problems she would see and hear about from captains, crew and suppliers, including the impact of too much plastic on the environment. She is the accidental entrepreneur, and now develops sustainable products and processes onboard the Super Yachts.

Clare is making a real and direct impact - reducing the impact - on the environment which aligns with her values and moral compass. She also told me about her guilt and wanted to provide her staff with solutions so lives by the mantra of 'Not how to do better, but why people need to do people'.

Together they become a force of nature for a sustainable future.

Well guys if you are currently multi - tasking this is your warning you may become completed distracted and absorbed in this episode. I recently sat down with Meg Reilly from the Magenta Project. An inspiring story, about a collective of passionate people committed to developing pathways and generating opportunities for more equity and inclusion in sailing, leading with gender.

Meg shares how she and others work with a wide range of individuals and organisations to make a positive and progressive impact on the sport, from grassroots initiatives to partnerships with international events and leagues.

Established by the sailors of the successful campaign of Team SCA in the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-2015, Meg shares the challenges and how the concept was embraced with early uptake of sponsors blind spot.

The sporting side of boating has similar goals and big dream like me, that include increased participation, and I loved hearing their strategies of how they are also striving to reach gender parity in sport — equal pay and equal play.

Boating is not just for the rich and famous as I say every episode. And today I am spending time with the person and the front of helm who is carving up swell and paving the sandy pathways for more diversity and inclusion across the board.

TMP have just release a great article that shares their success.

After finding her love of design at the tender age of 7, Sarah declared to her parents she wanted to be an interior 'disaster' instead of a 'designer'.  The mid 90's had her obsessed with the TV Changing Rooms and the excitement of a revealing a new and designer space. And now with her art and design diploma from University and a degree from the School of Art in Textile and Design, her attention was hijacked by Boats.

Sarah now works at Setag, with a full life and travel under her belt, she thrives in a team environment, creating and designing the beautiful interiors you see in the line.

Sarah has a focus on sustainability - taking plastics collected from the oceans and plastics weaved into the furnishings, the design leaves clients with a feel good sense of contributing to the recycling of wastes.

With modern day luxuries, client can rely on Sarah to collaborate and create what they always wanted.

I'm going to preface this episode with a warning: This woman is unstoppable and together with her team and tenacity have brought you the changes and customer experiences that NSW has seen in government over the last few years.

Nicole Watts, Director of NSW Maritime, has her feet firmly in the waters, looking to the future of our shoreline. With her extensive career in leadership and change management, a young family and charisma, you can't help but be inspired.

Nicole thrives on getting it better, not just right. She has overseen the customer service journey at Service NSW, spent a year with Apple Australia and travelled extensively on her days off from her roles at Qantas during the pandemic, taking and making opportunities.

This interview was awe inspiring for me, demonstrating the transition of skills and ability into Marine Industry she inadvertently started in whilst working on Cruise Ships during her early life. She has an open invitation to come back onto the series.

A long time in the making, this conversation with Andrea Froncolini compelled me back to time spent in Italy and I am grateful for our time together.   Andrea is a well known and revered artist, using his photographic skills to capture the essence of whatever his subject matter is.

Literally falling into photography (a great story he shares in this episode), Andrea has gone onto make a difference to the lives of young children in Pakistan by raising money to fund their education.

He also shares some of the amazing stories by the images you see on his webpage and instagram account.  Contracted to many of the big corporate sponsored sailing events, Andrea took on a personal project to amplify the presence of women in boating by taking their portraits at the Sydney to Hobart, a few years ago.

His Eye2Eye portrait series has captured a wave of attention whilst the Whilst You Were Sleeping exhibition share the water scapes of Sydney's sea board at a time when many would be.

So in this episode we turned starboard and tac our way through the challenges of motherhood in the boating industry. Emma and Danielle are successful women in boating at opposite ends of motherhood. Emma is just starting out with a young child and another on the way and Danielle is riding the rollercoaster of teenagism.

They share the challenges of what many mums face. Mother guilt, the ticker of worry and feeling like they are drowning in self doubt. But often it is the associated language of 'leaving the workforce' 'stepping back into the workforce', 'going part time', 'stopped working' and 'career break' that creates a separation between what they are doing and who they are.

Mums can be both working and parenting.

From Maternity Leave, Equal Pay, Part Time Work and Flexibile Hours, women have fought on the front lines of workplaces to secure entitlements that ensure they remain employed, advanced their career and hold influential positions in decision making.

Being the mum is a unique role in the life of another human and we get into the gritty in this conversation. Warning: Plenty of Truth Bombs.

Motherhood is a huge responsiblity as we ride the waves, get caught in the rip tide and set sail - looking very much forward to another sunset, exhausted and loved.

I've recorded this interview in the UK during a recent trip where I toured many of the factories and show rooms of yacht manufacturers.

Every minute of this episode is inspiring and I am so grateful for this conversation. So if you're a mum drowning in doubt, remember 'It's a bad day, not a bad life' - Emma and Danielle.

See you on the water soon. Nicky xx

As I prepared for this interviewed I sat with my guest MIles Moorehouse, the man behind the Fairline Brand, in a room watching a 58 foot yacht sail past the window.  The only thing was it wasn't sailing on a picturisque ocean of the English Coastline - in fact we were 200 miles inland at the Fairline Factory where the original owner,      set up shop.

Miles shares the journey of the Fairline Brand that is steeped in history and classic English storylines.   As the original fibreglass boat builder, Jack Newing Newington acquired an assortment of disused gravel pits by the River Nene, and the land between the main lake and the road. By cutting a route through from the lake to the river, and erecting workshops, offices, a chandlery shop and slipway, he transformed the area into Oundle Marina.

He spent his leisure days inadvertently showcasing the boat designs and launching the Fairline factory and more recently collaborating with the Italian yacht designer Alberto Mancini has resulted in a unique combination of contemporary style with a long-standing heritage.

Listen as Miles and I share a laugh and the elements of great design.

Light, detail, volume and finesse, paired with the security of outstanding seakeeping.  This is where understated elegance meets performance and adventure.

This is another incredible conversation from my UK trip where I was treated to a tour of the Princess Yacht International factory.

I caught up with Bill Barrow, who is the international sales manager of Princess Yachts and he shares how he started sailing at 6 years old with his mother and building boats when he was just 8 years old.

As we reflected on his years in the boating industry, Bill talks about his education in marine studies, experiences in production boat building and service industry.

From owning his own marine service business to his current role with Princess, Bill's passion for the industry will continue long into his 'retirement' which is due to take effect any day now.

Also in this epsidoe I give some tips on attending this years Sydney Boat Show.

  1. Shoes off, no handbags

  2. Don't be the person that opens every cupboard door

  3. Don't lie on the beds

  4. Ask the questions of the crew.

Sara Anghel, is the President of the National Marine Manufacturers Association which manages recreation marine issues and represents thousands of members.

She is also the first female President of ICOMIA (in it's 55 year history) the global marine association. During our recent trip to the UK I sat down with her to chat at the Royal Thames Yacht Club, London, England, about her journey and the opportunities she has had in the marine industry.

ICOMIA - is the international trade association representing the global marine industry since 1966.

It brings together national marine industry associations in one global organisation and represents them at an international level, presenting a strong and united voice when dealing with issues challenging the industry.

For exampe :

  • Standards for boats, construction and industry
  • Initiatives on end of life and sustainability
  • How to protect the industry.

In the first few minutes you will understand why she is so successful.

"I had a strong mother who had taken such good care of me growing up. She raised a strong and successful daughter. I watched her deal with her struggles, after leaving Romania, with no language skills and working from 5am everyday. My dad was my hero, never gave up and declared political asylum in Istanbul after escaping Romania in the late 70's not knowing what the outcome would be."

Sara was one of 10 candidates for this role, 9 of them were men.

'My husband told me ; "It's the marine industry they are not going to pick you, they are going to pick a guy!"

I just loved this conversation and it gave me such an insight into the business side of the marine industry, the opportunities for expansion and how important it is in the global trade.

Sara is a mum and wife, and her family is a priority in her international jet setting life, so l hope you enjoy listening to this incredibly inspiring woman.

So in this episode I sat down for a chat with Super Yacht CEO David Good.  He is also the CEO of AIMEX, the Australian International Marine Export Group who represents the Australian Made Banner of marine exports.

The average length of stay for a Super Yacht use to be 40 days, now we are hoping to entice the owners, crews and passengers to stay for up to 200 - 365 years a year given the vast Australian marine availability.

David also served in the Australian Defence which has equiped him with specialised skills in boat operations and when I asked him for an interview I never expected to get an insight into the reality of terrorism. I felt much safer knowing David was in control. Fascinating.

In this episode I'm sharing the considerations and the thoughts you may or may not have thought of before choosing a marina for your boat. As you know we have Empire Marina in Bobbin Head in Sydney, a 200 berth marina in an idyllic location, which is at the top of it's game being 5 Gold Anchor Accredited with the Marina Industries Association and having Waterside Bistro - the Marina Restaurant of the Year for 2021. But we are also now the proud owners of Marmong Point Marina - a 250 berth marina in Lake Macquarie - which believe it or not is far larger than Sydney Harbour. I am also a Director on the Board of the Marina Industries Association. Don't forget I am also a Boat Owner so I see the needs of a consumer in a marina too.

Add to that the fact that I've also seen and been to many other marinas all over the world on ICOMIA events and socially, and as a result through our boating community, I've heard what those who use a marina and work in a marina say when it comes to everything from facilities, location, transport, pricing, parking, insurance, environment, security, tidal access and the marina community. I love sharing all of this knowledge with you to improve your boating lifestyle.

I hope you enjoy this one it's packed with useful information and hopefully makes you think about if you are in the right marina for your boating lifestyle too.

We also discuss the start of my career in boating - I only joined this industry some 10 years ago and was a real novice - I hope that's inspiration to other women out there to have a go in this great industry.

In this episode I am speaking to the incredible force that is Duncan Curnow, owner and partner of Ross and Whitcroft and Quality Marine Clothing.

We chat candidly about building niche brands within the Marine Industry and the challenges of creating the clothing that withstands the weather conditions, demands of racing and marine workplaces.  Listen as he shares how he grew the one stop shop that is now distributed around the world in retail and online.

I always run into Duncan at the Boat Shows and we have a bit of laugh about the logistics and stress of being on a stand but my favourite stories are the ones about the Big Race - The Sydney to Hobart which Duncan had the opportunity to crew in 2007.  Making this episode very timely.

If you are looking to fit out your crew, invest in good quality marine clothing or find fashion for the high seas then reach out to Duncan - he is your one contact, with all the brands, and the convenience of one invoice for everything including corporate wear and gifts as well.

In this episode I sat down with Michelle, our Office Manager at Empire Marina Bobbin Head. I was excited because we actually got to chat in person (in our function room at Bobbin Head) about being the incredibly important person she is in our business.

Michelle is another guest on this podcast who 'fell into' the boating industry, starting 27 years ago and taking on the full time role so she could stay local and care for her young son, when the Marina was owned by the Halvorsen Family.

Michelle shared her lived history of the Marina from before there were berths just moorings, to the current day stunning marina with 200 berths and 10 moorings plus a full service hardstand and Waterside Bistro. She talks about her childhood boating experiences, and how hurt she felt being excluded by her father because that's not what girls do!

She shares some funny moments plus there are two very special stories in this episode about Ahn Do, The Happiest Refugee and a pair of young parents that show boating can create special memories that last forever.

Michelle talks of some of the many opportunities she has had in her career, including undertaking the marine managers course ( by the Marina Industries Association) that uplifted her knowledge and understanding, as well as how it introduced her to the network of women in the industry.

Well done Michelle, a fabulous guest and a beautiful person who is valued by our entire team.

Incidentally….Empire Marina Bobbin Head is currentlylooking for a new receptionist, get in touch if you would like to explore this employment pathway into the boating industry.

In this, my final episode with Kay, she shares her incredible achievements on boards and committees for the development of the Sea Muesum and other charities.   Her passion to create the change she wanted to see paved the way for Australian's and challenged old ways of government thinking and relationships with the community.

You'll hear some familar names from the 80's and 90's and the pivotal moments of Kay's activism and advocacy for children.

Her infectious laugh and solution focused approach to life kept me entertained all afternoon, and I learnt so much more about this beautiful woman, who I already loved and  feel privledged to know. I never wanted this conversation to end, and I could have sat and listened to her stories for days.   So I hope you enjoy this candid chat with Kay as much as I have and we will see you on the water again soon.

A big thank you goes out to Kay Cottee for her time and openness.  She is a living Australian Treasure and if you hang around until the end you can relive the goose bump moment she was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Introducing my good friend, Tracy Souris.

She is the Marina Manager at Sydney Boathouse. In this episode she shares how the largest Drystack storage facility is taking the boat ramp rage out of boating and making leisure time more enjoyable. She shares the influence her childhood experiences on the water with her adventurous parents had on her ‘falling’ into roles within the Marine Industry and how they helped her become the strong and successful women she is today.

I particularly love the misadventure stories as we wrap up nearly an hour of the most insightful conversation about the multiple pathways and opportunities that exist for women in boating.

Since this conversation back in May, the Marine Jobs website has been launched where you can find the collaboration between the Marina Industries Association, the Boating Industry Association and Superyacht Australia to support training, skills, jobs and careers in the marine industry across Australia.

Subscribe to my newsletter for a free digital version of the Nautlis Magazine and a 15% discount off the Ross Whitcroft clothing brand.

Hope to see you on the water soon with a glass of Pommery Champagne.

Welcome Back to The Boat Princess Podcast.

This is the second part of my interview with Kay Cottee and we are still chatting as we overlook the mighty Clarence River. We are drinking a nice cup of tea and picking at cheese cake by now and the conversation just got a bit deeper. We delve a little more into Kay as a person. How does she deal with her ADHD? What hobbies she enjoys and what did she do on her wedding day that made us truly belly laugh?

From discussing how women should get into the boating industry to the very first boat she designed, we hope you enjoy this second episode, and come to know more about this amazing woman, who has spent time with the queen and ambassadors but still just calls them “people”.

Enjoy. And I can't wait for the final and 3rd episode of our conversation that will be in out in the next couple of weeks.

Today I’m talking to Suzanne Davies, CEO of the Marina Industries Association. Suzanne has had a successful career spanning over 30 years in service industries, particularly hospitality and the marine sectors. In October 2020 Suzanne commenced as the CEO of the Marina Industries Association and I am excited about the changes she has already made to the direction of this important education and standards facilitator of the industry.

Suzanne has spent nearly 15 years in senior management roles in the marina industry. For over 12 years, Suzanne was the General Manager of the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club, the state's largest and most comprehensive waterfront facilities and sailing club. Suzanne then moved to take on the role of CEO of the country's largest marina group, d'Albora Marinas. Suzanne was a director and the treasurer of the MIA 2012- 2020 and is currently on the board of Australian Sailing. Prior to the marina industries, Suzanne held senior roles in a number of hotel groups including Sheraton, Meriton and Mirvac. This is a pattern we have seen before - even in myself that many women transition from hotels into marinas - after all there are many similarities.

Suzanne explains what the MIA does and how her career opportunities came about. For more information on the Marine Industries Association go to www.marinas.net.au and if you are looking for opportunities available in the boating industry or have opportunities within your marine or marina business that you would like to advertise go to www.marinejobs.org.au

If you would like to know more about me and what I am doing, you can follow me on instagram @theboatprincess or go to www.theboatprincess.com where you can also sign up for my newsletter and receive FREE digital subscription to Ocean Magazine until Jan 2022. See you on the water soon

Jess is the General Manager of Marine Pro Systems and Logix Group and a mum. She has a Medical Science degree and a deep passion for boats. She is married to her business partner, Brian, who she says is a clever electrician. Together they have a genuine commitment to sharing their knowledge and research about the innovative corrosion products available for propulsion protection for various types of boats.

Jess understands what her clients need to create efficiencies with the goal of reducing maintenance. Brian and Jess’s roles, as has technology, have evolved in the business, using their respective skills to solve complex problems with some very expensive tools. From scope metres, infra-red cameras and anodes for shaft drive and outboard engines, the investigation process analyses the issues such as pitting and metallic structure degradation.

Jess was travelling a lot prior to Covid and has big R&D projects in the pipe line but is the first to say she doesn’t always get it right with the juggle but continues to strive to achieve a balance between her roles at home and her marine career.

This is a special episode as Nicky is taken around My Vanish Super Yacht, by the owner Mitchell Grant Torrens. Recently renovated, this is a space by space, room by room account highlighting the quality of style, furnishing and fittings you'll see on this superb custom made Mangusta. From the Rolls Royce Engines to the custom ordered Ferrari Seats at the helm, dove tailed joinery and embroidered bed and bathroom accessories, this big 92 foot boat has everything you'll need and frequently pulls into the shallowest of bays in the Whitsundays thanks to it's engine set up. Built for comfort and speed, Nicky gets a little excited as she steps into the engine room (she does like a good engine room) to discuss all about 'redundancy', just one of the terms we use in the boating world.

Nicky also attended the Torrens Launch Party at the Sanctuary Cove Boat Show.

Click on link to see her photo in the Gold Coast Bulletin, Faces and Places Section!

WOOHOOOO This episode is one hell of ride and for just under $4million, Nicky thinks it's awesome value for a waterfront palace you can park anywhere in the world.

Big thanks to Mitchell for his time, another great guy in the boating industry that is welcoming and supporting women.

Torrens Luxury Collection is a leading Yacht broker with a global network of associates and an international presence that combines with the local knowledge necessary to service the desires of its clients worldwide.
