Freeing Rapunzel is Anne-Christine Witzgall’s first book. Her memoir is about how she escaped the shadows of her family’s Nazi past during the cold war era in West Berlin, Germany. This book reveals the consequences of family secrets on each family member. It becomes clear that by hiding past experiences, trauma is transferred to the next generation, but the story also explores the deeper issues women of all ages and cultures face: affirming their self-worth, purpose and becoming resilient.

Toni and Lisa discuss how all the past episodes lay a foundation for a specific order of steps in the learning process for people whether in healthy or in narcissistic, abusive and toxic relationships.

In both their own lives and in working with others in abusive, toxic and narcissistic relationships, Toni and Lisa have learned that it is beneficial to lay a specific, solid foundation so that we can understand not just what narcissism is but to understand and acknowledge if we are in an abusive or toxic relationship or situation. Lisa and Toni discuss the specific order of steps in the learning process as people become aware of their situation and especially if they are choosing to exit relationships with toxic people. We hope that today’s episode solidifies for our wonderful audience the importance of building a foundation by getting in touch with the inner you.

Following on the heels of last week’s episode, the enneagram is such a useful tool to help us better understand ourselves, our needs, our motivations, our fears and it can help us improve relationships and better shape our goals and values. For this episode, we are going to navigate narcissism using the enneagram! We thought it would be interesting and helpful to examine the traits of each enneagram type from a narcissistic lens. We want to examine how each enneagram type can show up in an unhealthy, narcissistic way as each type can lack empathy, avoid intimacy, and/or develop a superiority complex. For more information about The Heart Magnet, you can listen to our episode covering it on Season 1, Episode 12.

In this episode, in keeping with our mission to equip each other with strategies for ultimate and lasting mental health, Toni and Lisa explain the ancient theory of the Enneagram which is an organized tool that explains our core beliefs, motivations, and personalities.

Learning our enneagram personality type, and learning about the other personality types, is like a super power through which to view personality types through an insightful new lens where we might learn more deeply about ourselves and help us better navigate both healthy and toxic relationships.

Toni and Lisa had a bit of fun by choosing examples of enneagram types from TV, movies, books and celebrities! So fun!

Toni and Lisa pick up where they left off last week discussing the main buzzwords and concepts of narcissism and toxic relationships. This episode focuses first on buzzwords from the devalue and discard stages including the silent treatment, isolation, gaslighting, triangulation, flying monkeys, smear campaign, "hoovering" and other concepts. They briefly discuss the "cult of two" that exists in a narcissistic relationship. They also discuss the two key strategies of grey rock and no contact for surviving and existing with toxic people. They conclude with a conversation on the lack of closure after leaving a toxic relationship and how we can create our own closure.

Learning more about these concepts may help in the identification of red flags in potentially toxic relationships.

Episodes 6 and 7 are a great primer or refresher of these terms for listeners and us!

Lisa wraps up her story about leaving an abusive marriage. The abuse was increasing in frequency and intensity making the marriage very unsafe. She mentions the benefits of contacting the National Domestic Violence Hotline and how they assisted her in developing a safety plan and exit strategy. Upon informing #2 that she was divorcing him and wanted no further communication, he persisted in harassing and maybe even stalking her. This prompted her to obtain a protective order for her and her children’s safety. Though the road has been anything but easy, Lisa now lives a life of freedom from fear, control, and manipulation.
