I sit down with regular people and dig around for good stories, knowledge, understanding, inspiration, and as many laughs we can get in while drinking three fingers of good whiskey. After a massive career change, I enjoy hearing about how people came to do what they do for a living is particularly interesting to me. And so is whiskey.
Back in 2015, when Tasha and I were doing the old morning show, Patrick Sayegh contacted us about something we were talking about. He is a resident of Paris, France but had recently returned home from a two year stint in Brookings to help build a cheese factory. He listened to us a little bit on his brief commutes to work. When he got home he started listening to our whole show in his office. We have been online pen pals ever since. This podcast is the first day we had ever met him in person. It was a lot of fun!
Andy Hanson is a dad, a husband, an Army Guard Officer, and a garbage man. He is one of my favorite people to talk to because he never has nothing to talk about. He captures crazy stuff he finds on his garbage route on Snapchat, has a passion for shooting and hunting, and history. The best part of this episode was talking about the Battle of Slim Buttes in Harding County, South Dakota, not long after the Battle of Little Big Horn. We went long and had a fantastic time and a ton of laughs!

Jared Stepp is from the Salt Lake City area, he's a cop, a shooter, an instructor (his company Waypoint Training), and a pretty funny dude. Toby Tooke is a Montana native with a family history of bucking broncos. Such a unique history, he helped produce a documentary (Feek's Vision) about his great great great grandfather, who bred and developed the modern bucking broncos that are a part of rodeos today. I met Andy back in 2016 when he was running Gunway and had me out to the store to teach classes and helped me get my business going. He has served in the South Dakota National Guard for over 20 years, is a GWOT veteran having served in Iraq and Afghanistan, and he is a husband and father. Dad's funeral was this past Thursday, August 31, 2023. My family has received dozens of messages, social media comments, and other incredible tributes written and sent to us, which was eye opening. We had no idea how much he meant to other people and how many people he touched. As I was working on the obituary, Mom said "We need to make fun of him, too." So that's what this episode is. You will hear Sydney Powers, my nieces best friend and friend of Dad's, read a number of the kind notes that were sent to us. Then I tell several fun stories about Dad.

This weeks episode, and probably next week’s episode are going to be different. My family had our collective hearts broken on Friday, August 25, 2023. My dad, Tom Erickson, was driving to Sioux Falls on old 77, nine miles north of Beresford, when a man driving a giant tractor hauling silage, blew through the stop sign and collided with his car. He died on impact. I speak for a couple of minutes about how great Dad was, and then I play the episode I recorded with him back in March. Mourn with me for the first few minutes, then laugh along with us as I hang out with my dad and hear him tell stories in the way that only he could.
