Welcome to Negotiate Your Career Growth. I’m Jamie Lee, and I teach you how to blend the best of negotiation strategies with feminist coaching so you get promoted and better paid without burning bridges or burning out in the process.
Know what it’s like to feel like you don’t fit into any box? And silently suffer while second-guessing yourself in a workplace where you're one of the extreme few?
Yep, me too.
In this episode, I’m talking with psychotherapist Steve Alexander, Jr., a first-gen, Black, sensitive human who left a “safe” corporate job in risk management to become a healer for folks who, like me, feel too complex, too emotional, or too different for the spaces they’re in.
We unpack what happens when you’ve tied your identity and self-worth to a job that was never designed with you in mind, and how to reclaim a sense of self that isn’t dependent on a title, paycheck, or corporate hierarchy.
We also talk about the very real gap between how walking into spaces feel for the “male and pale” default versus those of us who are marginalized, and why naming that difference is a powerful first step toward healing, agency, and change.

Beneficiary forms...sexy?
In this episode, I’m joined by my friend Allie Irwin—hypnotist, coach, and creator of the Treasure Map, an end‑of‑life planning process—who makes a compelling case that it can be.
You’ll hear why preparedness is an act of care and freedom, how Allie’s clients literally find money (forgotten accounts, double charges, missed benefits), and what really happens in the first week after a loved one dies—when you’re forced to make 80+ decisions at about 20% brain capacity.
This is end‑of‑life planning without the euphemisms.
Together we unpack why we avoid talking about death, how to turn that avoidance into radical preparedness, and why doing this work now can shift your relationships, your money, and even your career choices.
Ultimately, this conversation is a celebration of life, the people we cherish, and living with real authenticity and integrity.

The truth is, some of the most powerful career moves happen when you don't ask for anything at all.
This Friday, July 24th, my client Sarah-Neel Smith and I are going to teach you exactly how to have those career conversations where you don't ask for anything at all and generate power for your negotiation outcomes. All the details here: https://antinetworking.jamieleecoach.com/
If you're going, "Wait, what? How does that happen?"
I explain it in detail in this episode.

In this episode of Risky Conversations, I interviewed my good friend and literary agent Kat Kerr about her unconventional path from Florida state government to championing marginalized voices in publishing. Kat shares how her childhood love of books, early encounters with racism, and a mid-career pivot led her into advocacy-driven literary agenting and involvement with programs like We Need Diverse Books. Together, we talk about some of our favorite Asian American authors, why representation in literature matters, the realities of the publishing industry (including agents, querying, and self-publishing), and what it really takes to take bold risks for your career, your values, and your family.

What do you do when you're offered an opportunity that will definitely stretch you but also scares you, and your first instinct is to hand it to someone else, because you feel you're not quite qualified?
That's the moment we unpack in this interview with Ai Asakura, Alumni Program Manager for the TOMODACHI Initiative at the U.S.-Japan Council, who I met at an expat meetup in Fukuoka this spring — one with that same eclectic, cross-cultural energy as New York City, where you connect peer to peer with people from all walks of life.
Ai is bicultural like me, and she's spent her career building bridges — between Japan and the U.S., and between mentees and the mentors who help shape their paths.
But it took her some time to recognize being bicultural as her own superpower, and when she did, it empowered her to say yes to an opportunity most people would've handed to someone with a bigger title.

Just in 2025, nearly half a million women left the workforce. 23% of all new businesses were started by women, and 50% of all solopreneurs are women.
Perhaps a part of you knows you need to leave. Maybe the job is toxic. Maybe you're underpaid. Maybe you're just done. But here's what's keeping you stuck: you don't know how to exit without burning bridges, tanking your finances, or sabotaging your next move.
So how do you leave a bad situation and actually land on your feet? What strategies, support, and resources do you need to negotiate before you promote yourself to CEO of your life, your career, and your own company?
In this episode, I'm showing you exactly that—through two real women, my coaching clients, who exited toxic jobs and made it work. One doubled her income by negotiating her exit strategically. One quadrupled hers. Both knew exactly what to ask for and who to ask it from.
Their stories are your roadmap. Let's dig in.

Women are asking to be paid better and promoted but we’re also getting "no" more often than men. What gives?
The problem isn't that women can't negotiate. The problem is that we're negotiating the wrong way—playing by rules that were never built for us.
So what's the right way? Surprisingly, it starts with an internal orientation rather than an external one.
Today, I'm walking you through the three core negotiation skills, which happen to be the ones you're already using every day.
And then I'm diving deep into the first step of the sovereign framework: Vote For Yourself. You'll see exactly how this played out for one of my clients, Sarah Neel, who went from burnt out professor to increasing her pay 7% and then again by 50% while successfully pivoting into a new career.
I'm also introducing you to something called the "locus of control" – a fancy phrase for addressing this key question: Who's actually in charge here? And once you answer that question honestly, everything changes.

Ever felt anxious about negotiating your pay? Wondered why it feels so risky when you already know you’re beyond pulling your weight at work?
Here’s the truth I see as a coach for marginalized leaders who don’t like office politics: We've been taught that asking for what we want is risky. Greedy. Aggressive. Ungracious.
But here's the thing.
Women and minorities aren't bad negotiators. We've just been sold a lie about what negotiation actually is.
In this episode, I'm sharing why I walked away from a six-figure tech career to become my own boss and an independent coach.
And I'm showing you the one mindset shift that changed everything for me and my clients. We're talking sovereignty, locus of control, and why that metaphorical tiara (as in: recognition and respect) you're waiting for? You have to put it on your own head.
Stick around. This one's foundational.

What happens when the pressures of work intensify AND parenting intensifies at the same time? Senior-level mothers are caught in a two-way trap—and many are quietly burning out, believing it's a personal failure rather than a systemic one.
In this episode, I talk with Shalene Gupta, staff editor at Fast Company, about her groundbreaking investigation into how senior-level women are coping with the impossible. After putting out a call on LinkedIn, Shalene received over 100 responses—48,000 words' worth—revealing both the ingenuity and the despair of working mothers trying to have it all.
Discover the creative solutions that are actually working: job-sharing arrangements that have lasted 13 years, radical transparency about boundaries that builds trust, and companies (like Cakes) that are redesigning the workplace from the ground up. But also understand why these individual hacks aren't enough—and why the real answer requires systemic change.
If you're a working parent, an ambitious woman in corporate America, or someone who wants to understand what's really happening behind closed doors, this is a conversation you need to hear. Because as Shalene says: "It's not you. The system is broken. And it can be redesigned."

Shalene holds an MS from Columbia Journalism School, a BA in creative writing and psychology from Johns Hopkins University, and is a Fulbright grant recipient. Everything worthwhile is on the other side of a risky conversation—especially when it comes to women’s health, birth, and career.
In this episode, I sit down with professional investor–turned–hypnobirthing educator Maria Lernerman to talk about how hypnosis, birth preparation, and self-advocacy can transform one of life’s most intense experiences into a joyful, empowering memory.
Maria shares how she navigates being a daytime asset manager and nighttime hypnobirthing educator, hypnotist, lactation counselor, and mom of three, and why talking openly about hypnosis in a buttoned-up industry was a risky (and worthwhile) career conversation.
You’ll learn what hypnobirthing actually is (beyond the woo), how it helps many parents have calmer births—often with less or no medication—and why these tools become “meta skills” you can use in high-stakes work situations, from boardrooms to hospital rooms.
Maria also offers grounded advice for women and couples planning to grow their families, including those going through IVF or navigating “high-risk” labels in the medical system.
If you care about self-advocacy, emotional regulation, and having real choices in your healthcare, this conversation will expand what you think is possible—for birthing, working, and beyond.

Informational interviews, job interviews, and offer negotiations: these are the "risky" conversations that stand between you and a career you actually love. But what if you could de-risk these moments and catapult yourself into a new dimension of success?
That is exactly what my client, Sarah-Neel Smith, PhD, did. In this episode, Sarah-Neel pulls back the curtain on her journey from feeling "stuck" in academia to pivoting into a high-impact career in philanthropy.
By combining well-structured informational interviews with coaching to advocate for her potential, she transformed her professional life—negotiating a 7% increase on her first offer and a staggering 50% pay bump on her second.
We discuss how to build self-trust, create meaningful connections, and find the "creative sharpness" that only comes when you stop grinding and start advocating for your value.

Many people think I'm a negotiation coach, but I'm really a practitioner of change working at the intersection of ancient Eastern philosophy and modern Western neuroscience.
The Science: Quantum physicists like David Bohm and Zen masters in the mountains agree: Everything you think is "solid" (your desk, your body, your obstacles) is actually 99.9999999% empty space. Similarly, neuroscientists like Michael Gazzaniga have found that there is no singular, fixed "I" in your brain. You are a "Society of Mind," an aggregate of different parts negotiating conflicting and inherently empty impulses in real-time.
The Philosophy: In Zen, this is encapsulated in a single character: Mu (無). It often gets translated as “empty,” but it can also reference a kind of boundlessness.
The Intersection: When you realize matter is mostly space, the "solid" walls in your mind begin to soften. You realize you are not your self-talk, the very thoughts that lie at the root of professional stress.
Instead, you are the boundless potential behind the action.
What you'll learn in this episode:
02:15 – The Humble, Good News: Why you don’t need a PhD or to become a monk to benefit from these fundamental truths
04:30 – Your "Society of Mind": How the illusion of being a fixed, singular "I" is dismantled by both modern neuroscience and ancient wisdom.
06:50 – Tyranny of Self-Talk: Getting to the root of all professional stress when external circumstances don't seem to go your way.
07:45 – The Liberation of "Mu": What becomes possible when new perspectives enable new ways of thinking, feeling, and responding to circumstance beyond our control.
09:30 – The 3 Stages of Change: A roadmap through Dissolution (of negative self-talk), Mental Rehearsal, and Embodied Brave Action.
11:00 – The Fortress of Trust: Why true trust comes from realizing your "self" is not a fragile, solid thing that can be broken.
12:15 – Creator & Masterpiece: When tangible results like getting promoted and better paid are the byproduct of accessing a deeper truth of who you really are.

When I sat down to record this conversation with M. Cristina Alcalde, Ph.D., ACC, last December, institutional biases hadn't yet turned as blatantly fatal as they have in the aftermath of Operation Metro Surge.
But truth be told, systemic exclusion leading to institutional violence has never been news for BIPOC and immigrants.
The endlessly "moving goalposts" is just one of many ways BIPOC professionals experience institutional bias in the workplace.

Have you felt the crushing weight of otherization as the only woman or person of color in the room? Or maybe you've been told you’re "too intense," "not assertive enough," or some other maddening combination of subjective, conflicting feedback at work?

What if imposter syndrome isn’t about you—but about a system designed to keep women small?
In this powerful episode of Risky Conversations, I speak with Sara Dean—keynote speaker, certified facilitator, and executive coach—to unpack the truth behind imposter syndrome, why women are socialized to doubt themselves, and how reclaiming self-trust changes everything.
Sara shares her journey from personal trainer to executive coach for leaders at Amazon, Microsoft, and beyond, weaving in stories of speaking up at work, helping women shed the need to “shrink,” and building a leadership brand rooted in authenticity instead of performance.
Together, we address anger as a valid leadership tool, the essential role of HRT in restoring balance and focus for professional women over 35, and how to ask better questions that open new possibilities.
If you’ve ever felt like you had to “do more” just to belong—or wondered how to stand firmly in your own power—this conversation will resonate deeply.

In this episode of Risky Conversations with Jamie Lee, we go beyond strategy and into the subconscious with a guided trance experience designed for executives and leaders.
Neuroscience shows us that we don’t just think with our heads — we also process wisdom through our hearts and guts. By aligning these three brains, leaders can access deeper clarity, reduce anxiety, and strengthen their executive presence.
As both an executive coach and integrative hypnotist, I combine cutting-edge coaching principles with hypnotic trance work to help high-performing professionals shift patterns at a subconscious level.
In this episode, you’ll be guided to tune into your body’s intelligence systems — the neurons in your gut that process intuition, the nerves in your heart that regulate connection, and the brain in your head that organizes thought.
This isn’t just meditation. It’s a neuroscience-based hypnosis designed to help you reframe old reactions, access new insights, and lead with greater confidence and alignment. If you’re an executive looking to integrate head, heart, and gut intelligence into your leadership, this episode is for you.

In this episode of Risky Conversations, I sit down with my friend, neighbor-turned-guest, and multi-hyphenate powerhouse Rachael Eckles—lawyer, author, coach, and founder of the Aphrodite Author Program.
We dive into what it means to defy death as a woman in midlife. Both in the spy-novel sense (Rachael’s Celeste Donovan series delivers plenty of that) and in the very real, everyday way of reclaiming energy, purpose, and joy through menopause and beyond. Rachael draws from her background in life sciences and women’s health to demystify hormone therapy, bust outdated myths, and remind us that women don’t have to suffer in silence.
We also talk about creativity as activism: how Rachael’s novels give us a messy, powerful heroine who refuses to be dismissed, and how the Aphrodite Author Program empowers women to publish their own stories with purpose and passion.
If you’re a professional woman navigating perimenopause, craving representation, or dreaming of writing your own book, this conversation is a reminder: your story matters, your health matters, and your power is only growing.

They share how navigating risky career conversations—like negotiating time for unpaid passion projects or walking away from stable jobs to pursue higher education—helped them step into more aligned, impactful roles.

In this episode, we’re diving into one of my favorite topics: the art of negotiation. And I couldn’t have asked for a better guest than Melanie Imming—a Dutch consultant known for turning complex ideas into compelling stories and challenging the status quo with clarity, warmth, and courage.
Melanie and I first met in Switzerland, where I led a negotiation workshop for Open Science Retreat. She later became a coaching client, wanting to bridge cultural gaps while negotiating with a U.S.-based business partner.
What made coaching her especially meaningful for me was that Melanie is already that person in her community—the go-to negotiation mentor. She’s known for helping internationals “negotiate like a Dutchie” by stripping unnecessary politeness out of letters, CVs, and emails so the message lands with clarity and confidence.

She’s working hard. She’s making real progress. And in one of our sessions, a powerful question came up:
How do I maximize happiness in this role?

I recently led a group session called Zen and the Art of Dealing with Office Politics, where I helped professionals—especially women and underrepresented folks—navigate the messiness of workplace dynamics with more calm and clarity.
We kicked off with a guided brain exercise to shift out of high-frequency beta brain waves (you know, that anxious, go-go-go energy) and into a slower, more grounded alpha state. It’s a small shift that opens up space for creativity and better problem-solving.
Then I walked folks through three key ideas:
1. Power Differential
We named the real (or perceived) authority gaps in the workplace—how power plays out, and why it matters when you're trying to be heard or make change.
2. Conflict Styles
Using the Thomas-Kilman model, I explained the five common ways people handle conflict:
I talked about how being “conflict flexible” is a leadership superpower—especially if you’re someone who usually avoids or accommodates by default.
3. Personal Interpretation
We explored how your story about what’s happening can either fuel stress or open up new choices. The way you interpret workplace friction directly impacts how you feel and what you do next.
All throughout, I brought in Zen metaphors and references from Asian culture to drive the point home: You don’t have to control every outcome. The goal is to stay present, stay adaptable, and not let office politics hijack your peace.

Did you know that a survey of over 4,100 young men from Brazil, Indonesia, the Netherlands, and Uganda revealed that menstruation is still considered taboo around the world? Since 2011, I've hosted negotiation trainings that can be best described as scrappy, pragmatic, and useful.
It started with humble Meetups where I got a bunch of the smartest women I know into a room and had them practice asking for what they wanted -- out loud.
When the pandemic hit, I consciously decided to focus primarily on my 1:1 executive coaching, and everything moved to Zoom.
(You can read about my coaching philosophy, process, and pricing right over here on the website)

🔥This might get me fired, I say to my clients to preface this truth bomb —
The game is rigged against employees.
Learning to negotiate for yourself is an essential part of playing to win the game.
The system is rigged to benefit the select few at the top and shareholders, not the hard-working manager or multi-talented individual contributor. And if you’re a hard-working woman or a minority, the odds are even worse.
But all is not lost. You need to learn how to:
✅ Advocate for yourself
✅ Negotiate your pay
✅ Play the game strategically

As the year comes to a close, many of us find ourselves being unusually hard on ourselves. The “itty-bitty-shitty committee” in our minds grows louder, fueled by the pressure of the year-end. We take stock of the past twelve months and too often hold them against ourselves like a harsh jury.
For some, the holidays — the Christmas season — can feel particularly challenging, especially if the memories associated with this time aren’t the happiest. It’s a season that often drags us back into childhood, stirring up complicated emotions.
In today’s episode, I’m sharing a deeply personal story of how I’ve learned to rewrite stories about a time I was once homeless, the profound impact of Byron Katie’s teachings, and what's possible when you turn these stories around.

If you’re curious about how to make that happen for yourself, visit jamieleecoach.com, where you can take a quick leadership archetype quiz or dive into over 100 blog posts packed with actionable tips on self-advocacy.
One of the biggest challenges I hear from high-achievers is figuring out how to balance their creative side with their ambitious, career-driven goals.
So many of us get caught up in all-or-nothing thinking: we assume that to pursue our creative passions, we have to sacrifice our professional success, or vice versa.
But what if it’s possible to do both? What if, by doubting ourselves a little less and taking a few bold steps forward, we could create a career that allows space for all of our ambitions?
Today, we’re talking to someone who embodies this possibility beautifully. I’m thrilled to introduce Rachael Eckles—a lawyer, bioethicist, and award-winning novelist.
Rachael has built a career that lets her thrive as both a successful professional and a creative force.
We’re going to dive into the risks she took along the way, the decisions that helped her merge these passions, and, of course, her fierce female protagonist who lights up her fiction series.

When you're a smart, capable woman who leads, you're most likely going to be one of the few or the only in the leadership suite -- especially so if you're a woman of color, an immigrant, on the LGBTQ spectrum or neurodivergent.
This inevitably means you often have to FIGHT to keep your seat at the table.
When should you put up a fight?
Why should you risk fighting?
What life skills outside of work will help you become a better fighter and therefore a winner?
But also, when should you walk away from the fight?
These are the questions we tackled on the interview with my friend and colleague Monique DeMaio, who tells her own riveting story of fighting and prevailing as the only woman in leadership.

Then a colleague — almost always a man — will paraphrase your idea and get praised for it.
It's infuriating. It hurts.
While injustices exist, you don’t want to idly stand by and let it happen to you.
You want to be able to identify the patterns that lead to this sort of thing, so you can nip it in the bud. You want to call it out when someone tries to take credit for your ideas, claim the credit you deserve, and right the wrong.

In this episode, I'm joined by Anne Devereux-Mills, former CEO of ad agencies and founder of Parlay House, to discuss the bold and boundary-pushing choices Anne made in her career and beyond.
Anne shares how she navigated the male-dominated executive suite as CEO of ad agencies, taking risks to draw lines between her work and family life, even when it went against the norms.
She opens up about the difficult, vulnerable conversations she had to have -- calling out inappropriate behavior from powerful colleagues, discussing personal health challenges, and confronting its aftermath.
But Anne's biggest risk-taking may have been inviting 12 complete strangers into her home to have the kind of raw and real conversations that are forbidden in the workplace.
This leap of faith led to the creation of Parlay House (full disclosure: I'm a member of Parlay House), a community that empowers women to shed their work personas and connect on a deeper, human-to-human level.

If you've ever struggled with severe PMS, painful periods, or the visceral challenges of having a female body in a male-dominated workplace, this episode is a must-listen.
This is an important conversation for me personally.
As a menstruating woman in her forties, I've had days where I'd been doubled over in premenstrual pain (both physical and mental) so bad the overly dramatic part of my brain told me I was going to die.
I'm always searching for answers, so I've googled my symptoms ad nauseam.
I've read books on the topic, including Shalene Gupta's The Cycle (https://shalenegupta.com/the-cycle/).
Then, I advocated for myself with my OBGYN.
All of which led me to a prescription for low-dose SSRI that flipped the switch on period paid and made my cycles much, much more manageable.
Around 80% of women experience period pain or PMS (premenstrual syndrome). For about 10% of women with PME (premenstrual exacerbation) or PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder), the pain is severe enough to disrupt their lives, relationships, and careers.
In this honest and vulnerable conversation with Shalene Gupta, we address period pain, something that affects a majority of women yet is so often shrouded in shame and silence.
Shalene bravely shares her journey with PMDD and the immense challenges it posed for her high-powered career as a journalist and writer.
She shared invaluable insights on navigating PMDD as an ambitious, high-achieving woman.
We also discuss practical strategies for managing physical, mental, and emotional symptoms, as well as guidance on overcoming the societal stigma that often prevents women from learning about treatment solutions and getting help, so they can continue to excel in their careers and lives.

But FIRST can I be honest with you?
As a feminist who believes in the equality of all genders and who believes that the female body is magical for its life-creating and life-giving powers -- the concept of a "fatherhood bonus" and "motherhood penalty" is befuddling if not repugnant.
It makes me sad and mad.

Mid-year reviews. Some companies have them as soon as Q2 wraps up, like clockwork, and some companies treat them informally.
Whatever the case may be for you, you want to show up to them feeling confident, prepared, and ready to advocate for career growth that would make you actually want to get up on Monday morning.
In this episode, I'm sharing a simple yet powerful five-step framework that has helped real women get promoted and better paid in various industries, including engineering, media, non-profits, and finance.
This framework will work any time of the year. In fact, it's something I routinely and repeatedly walk my executive coaching clients through so they can negotiate and secure buy-in with colleagues, investors, and decision-makers.

As a woman, I've encountered contradicting feedback that my voice is both "too loud" and "too soft." I've felt the pressure to change, minimize, and silence my natural speaking voice because unconscious gender bias leads to more criticism, rather than amplification of women's voices.
In this episode, my two guests -- Julie Fogh and Casey Erin Clark of Vital Voice Training -- celebrate a decade of helping leaders communicate with savvy, charisma, authenticity, and confidence by embracing, not changing, their voices.
We revisit their journey from their first pitch to present at the Bullish Conference in Miami, in 2014 (where I also presented a negotiation workshop and met them for the first time), to their current mission of reshaping communication culture.
Julie and Casey share their insights on how women's voices have evolved in the public sphere, countering critiques like vocal fry and upspeak, and how they’ve built a community grounded in the core values of service.
You'll learn:
Vital Voice Training is a voice, public speaking, and communication coaching company on a mission to change the conversation about what leaders are “supposed” to sound like, help organizations revolutionize their communication culture, and help individuals communicate with savvy, charisma, confidence, and a deep connection to their core values. For the client, the result is your voice: amplified (not just louder).

Here's what most people do: Start with the incentive and end with the thing to avoid.

I've come across a book that makes the perplexing and painful things from my childhood AND professional life make sense within the broader context of the history of humanity. And I'd like to shout about it from the mountaintops.
This book is The Patriarchs: How Men Came to Rule, by Angela Saini, a science journalist and author who teaches at MIT.
Now, don't get this wrong. The book ISN'T about bashing men or making the female gender superior to another (that would just be perpetuating yet another form of oppression).
It IS about going on an eye-opening journey back through time, 10,000 years before modern civilization, to uncover the true roots of gender roles. It's about challenging the deeply ingrained notion that men have always been the dominant sex.
The book debunks the view that patriarchy is just "the way things are." It walks you, point-by-point, through the latest research findings in science and archaeology to show that the systemic favoring of men isn't a natural law, but a constructed one.
This revelation matters because every day, women encounter the effect of gendered expectations, whether it's to handle more housework despite both partners working, or the glass ceilings in STEM fields and corporate leadership.
Join me and Angela Saini as we dive into prehistory and history to challenge our perceptions and inspire change. Don't forget to subscribe and share this episode with someone who needs to hear this.

In this episode, my guest Amy Babish and I discuss practical tools and techniques for managing stress and building nervous system capacity, so you can advocate for yourself as a high-achieving woman.
Amy Babish, a transformational coach with over 20 years of experience, shares her expertise in embodied equity, which is the impact of trauma on our nervous system. When trauma goes unaddressed, it can hinder our ability to confidently assert our desires and negotiate for ourselves in various aspects of our lives, both personally and professionally.
Amy explains that embodied equity work helps build resilience and capacity for personal, professional, and collective liberation by addressing historical and intergenerational traumas while fostering connections and helping us identify opportunities to speak up for ourselves.

Rewind to 8 years ago. In 2015, I joined New York Toastmasters to improve my public speaking skills, and the dream of becoming an executive coach helping women become bolder, braver, and better paid was just a glint in my eye (https://www.jamieleecoach.com/apply).
As a newbie, I prepared a 7 minute speech on aligning your "guts" (mindset), "eyes" (vision), and "heart" (emotions and listening skills), with partner dance as a metaphor for productive negotiation. (Watch it here: https://youtu.be/YP0DR-QM5as?si=y2gj6c1kI1i8vg0s)
Everything I shared in the speech is now integral to my coaching philosophy.

What's one thing you'd do if self-doubt couldn't hold you back in 2024?
Would you put your hand up for the promotion, the speaking opportunity, the face-to-face time with leaders you trust and admire?
And what might it be like if you experienced zero guilt about achieving all the growth and success you wanted in your career?
What often holds women back from taking action is socialized self-doubt and guilt rooted in patriarchal norms that are divorced from real, lived experiences.
In this episode, we're challenging patriarchal beliefs that disadvantage women (as well as non-binary folks and some men) so you can be equipped with tools to overcome self-doubt and negotiate your career on your own terms.

Why is it that smart women who are kicking butts at work often told they're "not ready yet" for the promotion?
Or that they're "too direct" or "net yet technical enough" or "too quiet?"
Short answer: unconscious gender bias is often at play. And you have options for navigating your way through and past it as a woman, to accelerate, not deter, your career growth.

I let go of the belief that people were working against me, or that they weren't invested in helping me grow in my career. I now see I have allies if I'm brave enough to ask for help.
I'm now carrying forward with me neuroscience-based techniques that help me stop negative thought patterns and help me re-direct towards better outcomes.*
As a result of coaching with Jamie, I've become more confident in myself and secured a workplace transition that feels right for me and my long-term goals.Book your 1:1 consultation today and get started on re-directing both your brain and your words towards the future where you lead with grounded confidence, even if your manager's wrong about you. This is from the book The Anti-Anxiety Toolkit by Melissa Tiers, my teacher and the founder of Center for Integrative Hypnosis. (Here's the link to her book on US Amazon)
Here's the link to a LinkedIn video of me demonstrating bilateral stimulation, another technique that Melissa taught me. My clients tell me this also helps them reduce anxiety and gain agency over their emotions.

I was recently tagged on a social media post written by a mid-career professional who's pivoting from academia to non-profit.
She's received an offer for her dream job, but when she assessed the details of the offer, she realized her all-in compensation would be lower than what she's walking away from.
She wants to negotiate, so she'd break even at the new job. But she's worried she doesn't know how to write the email correctly.
In this episode, I'm walking you through each of the five steps and sample language I've suggested to her.

How do you make the case to double your rate? A subscriber recently posed this question, and I'm sharing my answer here.
Whether you are an entrepreneur who sets her own rates, an employee earning a wage, or an entrepreneurial employee with ambitions of one day setting, then doubling your own rate, you'll find something relevant and useful here.
I've used the same mutual-benefit negotiation principles, that I once used to negotiate my pay raise as an employee, to grow my business. Now, I often teach the same principles behind sales and marketing strategies I've learned as an entrepreneur to help my clients get promoted and better paid.

In this episode, I'm getting personal and sharing some of my early life experiences that have shaped my money philosophy and why I help women get bolder, braver, and better paid.
To me, money is simply a bonus byproduct of having honored the limitless capacity of the human mind, brain, and soul, and a byproduct of having cultivated courage and conviction in the face of difficult circumstances.
I coach for reasons bigger than money, because I know first hand what it's like to overcome being an immigrant, being in a lower economic class, and being a woman in a patriarchal society that undervalues women's contributions.
For these reasons, I'm also sharing an important business announcement with the intention of making executive coaching more accessible to underprivileged women.

How would that confidence catapult your entrepreneurial dreams into reality, so that you do become CEO of your own profitable company?

What might you do, if you stopped believing that you're under-qualified or that you don't deserve the job you have?
Too often, these limiting beliefs become invisible scripts that hold people back from negotiation confidence.

This is exactly what my client Amy Scoville, a software engineer, a mother of two, and once the only woman in her team, has done.
This interview with Amy is a masterclass in flipping invisible scripts, building confidence to advocate for your growth, and creating financial abundance as a working parent.

No matter what your age is, you are not "too old" for your dreams, whether that is becoming CXO, starting a business, or becoming a competitive body-builder (case in point: Ernestine Shepherd)

There's an inconvenient truth we all must embrace in order to negotiate our career growth without burning out in the process.
The truth is that work is not your whole life. Getting promoted, getting better paid can be amazing and fun, but your career is not the end all, be all of your life's purpose.
But your whole life -- with all its beauty, complexity, joys, and sadness -- impacts how you show up to work.
Hard things in life, like losing a loved one, happen.
The way through the hard isn't about pretending to be perfect, blaming yourself, or hiding out in compare and despair.
The way through is about embracing the often messy and painful human experience, which paradoxically leads to greater self-confidence.

We are taught to believe that hard work creates value.
As women, we're also taught to believe that our value is determined by forces outside of us, which has us often feeling as though we don't have value.
However, none of these disempowering beliefs are true.
While our personal value is sacrosanct and non-negotiable, our work value is something we create and can speak to...without overworking and burning out in the process.
To maximize your potential for career growth and satisfaction, you have to start articulating this value early and often.
