Both sessions dive deeper into how to streamline your processes, boost performance, and grow profitably in 2025 and 2026.
In this episode of The Recruitment Edge with Ez Khan, we’re diving into one of the biggest challenges recruiters face right now: getting in front of clients. The data doesn’t lie. The average recruiter in Australia meets with fewer than 15 clients a year. That’s not enough to build momentum, relationships, or consistent billings.
I unpack why client meetings are declining, how that’s impacting recruiter performance, and what to do about it. You’ll learn:
- Why fewer client meetings = weaker results
- The difference between asking for a “catch-up” vs. offering value
- How to position your meeting so clients actually want to show up
- Scripts and strategies to secure more client meetings
- How to rebuild BD confidence through insight-driven outreach
If you’re serious about lifting your billings, increasing client trust, and booking more high-value conversations, this episode is a must-listen.
If you’re serious about levelling up your BD game, have a look at the BD Business Accelerator. It’s designed to turn strategy into consistent, measurable results. You can shoot me a message for more info.
Struggling to get clients to answer your calls? You’re not alone.
In this episode of The Recruitment Edge with Ez Khan, I unpack why recruiters are finding BD calls harder than ever and why the phone is still your most powerful business development tool in 2025.
Discover:
- Why clients aren’t answering (and what to do about it)
- The 4-step structure for effective BD activity
- How to overcome BD fear and build momentum
- Why volume is the secret to consistency and confidence
If you’re tired of hearing “calls don’t work anymore,” this episode will help you rethink your approach and reignite your BD rhythm.

Hume Scope - Developing Exceptional Recruiter
In this episode of Roles & Lol$, Ez and Lucy are ready to wrap up for 2024, but that doesn’t mean slow down! No no No, we have a lot to do to prepare for 2025!
With the end of 2024 in sight, many recruiters have taken their foot off the gas, but they explain why November and December are critical months for laying the groundwork for success in January and the duration of 2025.
The discussion focuses on two key scenarios: entering the new year with a plan versus scrambling to catch up. They share actionable strategies, including booking prospect meetings, utilising LinkedIn Recruiter, targeting companies set to lose staff, and why connecting with senior candidates in January is a must.
They also highlight the importance of momentum and proactive planning to avoid starting the year behind your competitors.
Tune in for practical advice on how to maximise the last quarter, maintain momentum, and set yourself up for a successful 2025.
In this episode, Ez and Lucy delve into the often overlooked but crucial topic of tracking ratios in recruitment.
They explore why focusing on the quality of ratios can be more effective than simply increasing activity levels.
Join them as they break down five key success metrics: candidate calls to internal interviews, internal interviews to CV submissions, CV submissions to client interviews, client interviews to placements, and business development calls to client meetings.
Ez shares insights from real-world experiences, highlighting how understanding these ratios can pinpoint areas for improvement and drive better outcomes.
Discover how to set ratio goals, assess performance, and create a tailored learning and development plan to enhance your billings. This episode is a must-listen for recruitment professionals looking to work smarter, not harder, and achieve greater success in their roles.
How much time do you really spend preparing a candidate for an interview?
In this episode, we dive deep into a commonly rushed part of the recruitment process—interview prep! Working on a recruitment desk, KPIs often focus on other areas, leaving this crucial step undervalued. Truth is….all your hard work can go down the drain if you don't give interview prep the attention it deserves.
Ez and Lucy label interview prep as one of the most important parts of the process!
We also uncover the secret that 95% of recruiters miss: prepping your clients for interviews too!
Tune in to discover how to elevate your process, and make sure your interview preps are as solid as your placements 😉

In this episode, Ez and Lucy dive into a crucial question that many recruiters face after a couple of years in the industry: Is recruitment really the right path for me? As the market fluctuates and challenges arise, it's natural to wonder if you should stay the course or explore other opportunities.
We explore the cyclical nature of the recruitment industry, drawing on an intriguing analogy by Ez—a Japanese plant that remains submerged underwater for four years before growing 20 feet in just 30 days. Much like this plant, your recruitment career may feel stagnant at times, but persistence can lead to rapid growth and success.
We also discuss how the 2-3 year mark is often a turning point, where recruitment can become truly lucrative. If you’ve been questioning your place in the industry, especially during tough market conditions, this episode is for you. Remember, every career has its challenges—pick your hard, and we believe recruitment is one worth choosing.
Listen in to gain perspective, motivation, and a deeper understanding of whether recruitment is the right fit for you in the long run.

Everyone seems to be releasing salary guides these days, but are they truly making a difference? More often than not, these guides are launched without any strategic intent, leading to extra work for your team without delivering meaningful results. At Hume, we believe there needs to be a clear strategy behind these tools to give your team purpose-driven and target-marketed business development.
In this episode, we'll uncover why some people think salary guides are overrated, why others don't understand their purpose, and most importantly, how you can turn these guides into powerful assets with the right strategy. We'll explore the common pitfalls agencies fall into when distributing salary guides, and how to avoid them. We'll also discuss real-world examples and best practices on leveraging salary guides to enhance your business development efforts, align your team's goals, and provide genuine value to your clients.

Well this episode is absolute chaos. If you aren't watching, you probably won't have any idea what is going on. Laura is wrangling a child whilst simultaneously cooking an omelette and Ez is trying to calm the dogs from the raging thunderstorm. In the midst of all this, we discuss why its mindset over matter when it comes to weathering a softer market, and what to focus on when you all you are hearing is doom and gloom.
Hope you don't feel seasick after this one!
Hey there, folks of the Roles & Lolz community! This week, we're diving deep into what we like to call the roadmap to success for your consultants. 🗺️
Recruitment can sometimes feel like a wild expedition, so providing your team with the right tools, environment and guidelines is essential. We'll explore how creating a "container of safety" within your agency can be a game changer for your consultants and your retention rate as an agency owner.
But what exactly is this "container of safety"? Tune in as we unpack:
🔐 Security Breeds Success
📈 Setting the Stage for Growth
🤝 Building Trust and Collaboration
Whether you're a recruitment agency owner, a seasoned recruiter, or just someone keen on the secrets to a successful team, this episode is a treasure chest of insights.
So, pop in those earbuds, hit play, and join us!
Hold onto your hats, ladies and gents! In this ep, Ez and Laura plunge headfirst into the tumultuous waters of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Is there anything more polarising for recruiters than the notorious KPIs? Ez can’t stand agencies that claim to be “KPI-free” - a sentiment Laura echoes with her classic unfiltered gusto. Together, they’re on a mission to debunk myths and dish out some hard truths. KPI haters, consider yourselves warned. Whether you’re a recruitment rookie, a seasoned pro, or just here for the banter, this episode is your golden to the world of consistent, strategic billings!
Welcome to episode... Who knows? This week, we kick things off with a (very lame) joke! Apologies in advance...
After the joke, Laura and Ez delve into the topic of what makes a great client. How often do we, as recruiters, find ourselves working with crappy clients? Clients who don't value us, clients who soak up a huge amount of our time for not much return?
So, what constitutes a good client?
Well, my friends, you're in luck. Laura and Ez break this down for you!

That's right, folks! We're diving deep into the age-old debate of agency versus internal recruitment roles. If you're a recruiter at a crossroads, wondering if you should make that switch to the other side, this episode is for you!

Overwhelm is the name of the game this week, and it's over to Ez to break down how he manages the never ending to do list and the intensity of our industry. Ez is pretty special at supporting our whole team when things get tricky, and that is because of the huge amount of work he has done on himself. He's got a pretty awesome morning suggestion to get those good vibes flowing too. Our countdown dance is also really shaping up.

In this week's episode, Lucy dives into a conversation with Ez about his journey in retained search and the lessons he's learned along the way.
Four years ago, Ez started his recruitment business with no retained experience, yet he boldly decided to build an agency that was 100% retained. Fast forward to today, and Ez's business remains exclusively retained. So, how did he achieve this? What insights did he gain throughout the process?
Lucy explores the following questions with Ez:
Tune in to uncover Ez's thoughts on these topics and more!

What makes a good client base? More is more? Or less is more?
Today's episode is all about the importance of a well-rounded client base ad not biting off more than you can chew (or service).
Now, we know what you're thinking, "Why should I bother with having a variety of clients? Can't I just stick to one type?" Well, let me tell you, having a diverse client base is like having a diverse diet. Sure, you could eat nothing but pizza every day, but eventually, you're going to get sick of it (blasphemy, I know).
But seriously, having a variety of clients not only keeps things interesting, but it also provides a safety net. If one client suddenly drops off the face of the earth, you won't be left high and dry because you've got other clients to fall back on. And speaking of safety nets, let's talk about the importance of less is more.
Now, I'm not saying you should only have one client (unless that client is Oprah, in which case, go for it), but spreading yourself too thin by working with 40 clients can lead to burnout and poor performance. It's like trying to juggle too many balls at once - eventually, you're going to drop them all. Instead, focus on a select few clients and give them the attention they deserve. Quality over quantity, people!
So, grab a snack, pour yourself your fave drink, and get ready to learn why a diverse client base and a focused approach are the keys to recruitment success.

Are you leaving money on the table by neglecting your existing client relationships? It's time to level up your game with Laura and Ez, as they reveal the secrets to building a thriving business by focusing on "landing and expanding" your accounts.
Laura & Ez share how they’ve been able to build highly profitable desks by having a land & expand mindset.
In this week's episode, Ez and Laura spill the tea on their journeys from clueless consultants to leaders. They'll make you laugh, and occasionally cringe as they share their epic fails and embarrassing moments that will make you feel like a true leader in comparison.
Get ready to learn some valuable lessons on how to talk the talk, walk the walk, and not trip and fall on your way to the top. From handling difficult team members to avoiding awkward water cooler small talk, Ez and Laura will give you the lowdown on everything you need to know to be a leader.
So, grab a drink, put your feet up, and get ready for some witty banter, awkward pauses, and shameless self-promotion!
Personal development. This week Ez & Laura talk about personal development and how its changed their lives! They're tried a lot - Ayahuasca, yoga, mediation, sound therapy. You name it, they've tried it!
It's an area they're both so passionate about and they attribute their success in businesses to the personal development that they have seeked out.
It's not all about reading leadership books. Personal development is just that. Personal.
We hope you enjoy!
Whats going on in the world of recruitment? Should we be bracing for a slow down? If we were to rely on social media, we could easily assume the market is tanking! But it's not all doom and gloom. Ez & Laura chat through what they're seeing in the market based on conversations they're having day to day with agency owners all across Australia.
In 2005 in the UK this episode would have just been called ‘get on the phones innit’.
But now in 2022, we like to do things a little differently, and the first step towards business development success is looking at your mindset towards it. After a booming 12-18 months, with very little need to focus on new sales, it may be feeling a little daunting to be considering getting back into the swing of business development, and some of you may be feeling a little resistant. So open up this episode for some little nuggets of advice from us as to how to get yourself back into the swing of all things bd. Ez is also extremely articulate in this episode and you’ll need to listen to the end to find out why…
www.humescope.com.au
OK! To head this episode up- YOU CANNOT HANDLE EVERY OBJECTION. Read that again and gift yourself a sigh of relief. Old school sales training will try and tell you that you can work around every scenario but that is bullshit in our opinion. What you can do however, is explore, probe further and hopefully find a chink in the prospects armour. In this episode we gift you our step-by-step process for handling objections. It isn't very funny, so don't expect a huge amount of lol$ this week, but it does add value, so hopefully you enjoy!
www.humescope.com.au
Ever been victim of the dreaded corporate business plan? SWOT Analysis? List of goals that you have no intention of looking at ever again?
Well that's where we come in with this week's episode, where we run through our top tips for creating a business plan that you will actually use. Shocker I know! Linking your intrinsic motivations with your external goals and creating an action plan that is based on actual results is the way to go- we hope there are some nuggets of goals in here for you planning legends!
www.humescope.com.au
This weeks poddy is all about one of the most discussed subjects in recruitment. Exclusivity baby! Selling exclusivity comes up ALOT for Recruiters- but actually, as we discuss in this week's poddy, it isn't about selling exclusivity, it's about selling your PROCESS and then securing exclusivity. This statement alone was enough to give Laura the 'recruitment shivers' as she calls it, which confused Ez no end and we got off track for a bit before pulling it back and hopefully giving you guys some insight as to how we sell short term exclusivity that requires minimal commitment from the client. 💪🏼
Some of you may know that Spencer Lane used to be one of Australia’s most well recognised rec2rec agencies, and in 2021 Ez made the brave decision to change verticals to marketing recruitment. In this episode, Laura asks Ez about his key challenges and learnings in changing verticals, and what consultants should be thinking about if they are considering a change in vertical- a must watch for all experienced recruiters wondering if the grass is greener :)
www.humescope.com.au
Us Recruiters love to code things as black or white in the sea of grey in which we live. So when it comes to our existing clients it's hardly surprising that we have two categories. Not a client. And, a client.
Revolutionary.
In this episode we break down the customer journey from prospect, to repeat customer to brand ambassador- aka- those clients that will shout about you from the rooftops, and how you as a recruiter can actually impact how those relationships develop. It's a little bit of marketing sprinkled into your business development strategy, which is how we like it.
www.humescope.com.au
Well let’s just wind Ez Khan up and watch him go. Don’t get this man started on the benefits of retained search recruitment. We all know what a retainer is, so in this episode we took a slightly different angle and focused on proving wrong the common objections we hear about why retained won’t work on your desk. We also address getting your large brand names to commit to retained, EVEN if they have a PSA. At one point I disappear under the desk and he still carries on talking. Get on to this episode contingent recruiters- we may just change your mind yet!
www.humescope.com.au
If you take one thing away from this week, it's this manta- It aint life or death people! It's recruitment.
This week, we are chatting about all things mindset, self awareness, positive energy, manifestation, energy attraction and choice. It takes everything for Laura to not pull out a guitar and start singing Kumbaya. All this whilst Ez guzzles a glass of champagne. On a serious note, if you occasionally (or regularly) struggle with your mindset or your ability to let the small stuff go, hopefully this week's episode gives you some tips and insight into how we are still laughing after nearly 30 years of combined experience in this crazy industry.
www.humescope.com.au
The (not so allusive anymore) million dollar biller/recruiter. Who are they? What traits to they have? What makes them different? Are they all champagne guzzling, 12 hour a day working, super experienced consultants working across executive roles? In short. NO.
The comment traits & softer skills are relatively the same across the board.
So what are they? Pop a listen to this episode!!
www.humescope.com.au
Realness & authenticity. This week Ez & Laura share their best secret to success – Authenticity. Laura & EZ share their journeys from corporate compendium touting recruiters, to authentic happy recruiters! “Being ok with not being someone’s flavour” that’s the phrase that sums up this episode! Also, Ez shares some of his awful dad jokes! Turns out they’re not as funny as they think they are.
Does your Mum/Partner/Sibling/Great Auntie Mabel actually understand what you do for a job? Do they nod and smile when you talk about deals, placements and billings but you can tell the lights are on and no one is home?
Well this week's episode is somewhat of a public service to all recruiters, as we break down what an Agency Recruiter actually does, and how they do it well. Send it to your future hires, use it to educate your clients/candidates or simply pop it on for your partner and watch as their jaw drops in awe of how bloody incredible you actually are. You are welcome.
www.humescope.com.au
Why oh WHY do Recruitment Agencies treat KPI's like the devil? Laura gets proper ranty on why KPI's have got such a bad rap in our industry. When used well, KPI's provide a framework and a structure that support your productivity and efficiency, you just have to use them RIGHT. This week we cover how to really utilise tailored KPI's to maximise your success- regardless of your level of experience.
Also, we genuinely don't know if we have covered this one before- so SOZ in advance.
www.humescope.com.au
This week, Ez & Laura give their top tips on what to consider when starting your own recruitment agency and what to look out for when you're started it! Having started multiple businesses themselves, Ez & Laura share candidly what they wish they knew when they started their own agencies.
URGH networking. It brings to mind lukewarm savvy B, greasy pie shaped canapés and laminated finicky name badges.
So, why did we even bother recording an episode about it? Because the world of networking has changed my friends! Our definition of networking is 'a joy of connecting others'.
Now that sounds more interesting. Networking opportunities are everywhere and our job as recruiters is to use our naturally curious (nosy) little brains to connect those around us and reap the benefits in return. And if you like standing in a room trying to stuff an arancini ball in your mouth whilst someone is selling you life insurance, well, this may not be the episode for you!
www.humescope.com.au
The only thing you need to know about this week's episode is that we are dressed in hotel bathrobes. Proper lol$ trying to take us seriously.
Apart from that eye sore, this week we explore what truly motivates us, (and it's not actually 5 year business plans and commitment to rigid structure as some people may think). We talk about freedom in our roles, the ability to roll with what life throws at you and shaping your journey to your individual values, drivers and purpose. This is an area we are both really passionate about and we hope you enjoy our insights! (and the robes).
What we hear on the daily when it comes to Consultant's posting content on LinkedIn is 'why would people care what I have to say'. Well our answer to that, is that your content is not about YOU- it's about your audience. This week we give you our key tips for developing a consistent posting schedule on LinkedIn that actually resonates with your audience. Laura also learns the error of her ways in buying a ring light on Catch.
www.humescope.com.au
The magic number 10! This is our 10th poddy episode- so far we have brought you 100 minutes of listening pleasure, including tips, tricks, technology fails and crap jokes. Thanks for being on the journey! (if this isn't just our Mums listening).
This week Ez quizzes me on my industry knowledge and we give you a sneak peek into the key findings of our Recruiters Salary and Benefits Survey, which will be launching in the new financial year! Some of the findings are not what you expect...!
www.humescope.com.au
This might be one of our favourite poddy episodes we have done to date! If you are currently hurtling through your first 12 months in recruitment then this week is for you, as we provide all our little pearls of wisdom for making it out the other side in one piece.. Even if you have been in the game for much longer, there are some great refreshers in here to make your recruitment journey a roaring success. We also would love to hear your thoughts on who you think is funnier- Laura or Ez? (It's definitely Laura- and this is definitely not written by her either)
www.humescope.com.au
This week's poddy is focused on your career advancement, and it's time to take some ownership! If you think the career god is going to shine down on you unexpectedly and promote you to Leader of the Recruitment World without so much as a second thought then you may be a little disappointed. It has to come from YOU. We discuss how Ez progressed from a Senior Consultant to a COO within a couple of years, and how you can start to own your opportunities. As per usual there's some drama like the lights going out and Laura tries to sing. Standard.
www.humescope.com.au
This week, Ez & Laura talk about business plans. Are they important? What should be in them? Why do them? Ez & Laura are fastidious with their planning. It’s the reason they are able to run multiple businesses without tearing their hair out!
Ez is on fire with his quotes this week, meanwhile, Laura tries to relay a quote and fails in epic fashion.
This week we get all Oprah Winfrey on you guys and share our tips for taking ownership of your career advancement, whether it be to the traditional pathway of management, or something more left of field. You can see how passionate we are about this subject, given we run 2 mins over, and there's barely a joke in here, but you will hear Laura try and sing Katy Perry 'Eye of the Tiger' for a bit of empowerment. Bicep curl emojis all over the place.
Bloody bloody counter offers. Yuck. The thing is, once you are dealing with a counter offer, it is already too late to make an impact. Unfortunately we have been dealing with these b*stards for over 27 years combined, so here are some tips to avoid being blind sighted with a candidate accepting a counteroffer.
This market is primed for full-fee's people!!! And you are worth nothing less! In this week's episode Ez discusses how he 'opens his kimono' and after we LOL about this we actually provide some tangible takeaways to help you avoid that dreaded discount question.
This week is all about comparison, self confidence and cultivating gratitude. In your recruitment career you may start behaving like a curious meerkat - peeking out over the landscape to see what everyone else is up to. If you want to skip the listening this week, basically the message is this - stop being a nosy parker. Focus on why you are good at this job, bottle that, and sell it.
What do we mean champers and razorblades? What we basically mean is this- THIS JOB AT TIMES WILL TRY AND BREAK YOU. You will hate it and then you will adore it again, often in the space of a few hours. Here is how we have navigated this never ending shit show for 30 years combined. Ez also gives us a knock knock joke too.
