"As a dressage trainer, my goal is to make good training accessible to everyone who is interested in learning. I want to help YOU learn to love your ride!" ~ Amelia Amelia Newcomb Dressage works to develop a trusting and confident relationship between horse and rider. Using elements from both natural horsemanship and classical dressage, Amelia creates a holistic approach to dressage training that adapts to fit the needs of each individual horse and rider. Starting with basic groundwork and progressing to the Grand Prix, Amelia emphasizes trust, understanding, and relaxation for both horse and rider.
Amelia also enjoys teaching and sharing her knowledge and experience with her students. “I have been blessed with many great teachers in my career and I hope to help each and every one of my students develop a connection and solid relationship with their horses.” A passionate dressage trainer, with a goal of reaching and helping a larger number of riders than one-on-one in-person training allows, Amelia has expanded her training program to the online community.
“I see online dressage training as the future. Not everyone is lucky enough to have an amazing dressage trainer in their backyard. Amelia’s Dressage Academy provides monthly workshops and in-depth masterclasses, which can provide a map for progress in your dressage journey!” – Amelia Amelia Newcomb is a USDF Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medalist, and a member of the prestigious USEF Dressage Development Program. She has trained and competed close to 50 horses in almost 500 competitions, and has trained several horses that she started as youngsters all the way up to the Grand Prix. Amelia hopes one day to compete internationally and to represent the United States at the Olympics. Amelia Newcomb Dressage is based in Somis, California, where Amelia offers complete and correct dressage training from breaking the young horse through the FEI level.

This week’s live Q&A I kept it short and sweet. I talk about getting your horse supple with lateral work, I also shared updates from some of my programs, 30 Days to Round and the Training Scale Masterclass, and I’m so proud of those students.
I shared about my journeys with Harvey and Kensington and how they have progressed up through the levels, and how I love training and bringing young horses up through the levels.
Steffen Peters also came to my barn this week and I got to ride my horses and some of my clients horses with him. We worked on the subtlety of my aids and how I can better train and ride my horses so I shared a little bit about this too.

This week we're chatting about how to get a backwards horse going forward, how we should salute the judge, getting from free walk to medium walks, and more!
I am VERY EXCITED to share with you today and interview that I know will help give you some tips to improve your position and get straighter in the saddle! A big part of Dressage is straightness. All horses are naturally crooked and so are the riders. It is very important to first identify these asymmetries, understand how the effect your position and your horse and then work to correct them! Here are some of the key takeaways from the interview although I highly suggest you watch the video as there are a ton of really great information in the interview: — It is important that you can see and actually visualize your asymmetries so that you can fix them. Often our proprioception is off - we think that we are straight when we are not. The first step to correcting this is you must see your asymmetries. — Building Blocks for Straightness - to assess the rider’s straightness, always start with the pelvis and make sure that the pelvis is sitting straight in the saddle. Then work your way up to the ribcage, shoulders, and finally the head. — Consider what you do outside of riding - the way that you sit in your car, the way that you sit at your desk and even the way that you sleep effects your riding and symmetry in the saddle as does any old injuries you have had. Exercise, working with a physical therapist, and addressing your asymmetries when NOT riding is hugely important. I am very grateful to Dr. Russel MacKechnie-Guire fo doing this interview! I learned a ton and I hope you did as well! Dr. Russel MacKechnie-Guire is the founder of Centaur Biomechanics and developed the black jackets with a yellow ex on the back that I often use in my videos.
Russell MacKechnie-Guire holds a PhD in EquineBiomechanics, graduating from the Royal VeterinaryCollege in 2019. Russell’s thesis was titled ‘TheRelationship between Saddle and Rider Kinematics,Equine Locomotion, and Thoracolumbar Pressures inSports Horses’. Russell is based at Centaur Biomechanics,a company which he founded in 2006. He has extensivelyresearched the effect that tack (saddle, bridle and girth)has on equine health and performance. Russell’s currentarea of research is horse-saddle-rider interaction, spinal kinematics in horses when ridden over ground and the effect that rider asymmetry has on equine back movement. In addition, Russell collaborates with researchers from around the world on various research projects associated with equine health and performance. He regularly presents his work at international meetings throughout the world and is a consultant for the British Equestrian Federations World Class, Team GBR programme. Russell is a member of the Team GBR’s Scientific Advisory Group, Society of Master Saddlers Scientific Advisory Group and chairs the horse+rider subgroup, part of the International Task force on Laterality in Sports Horses.
