Peter McIntosh from the Natural Building Collective was nominated as RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Hero. Here he chats to The Unicorn on the Drive Zone.
Peter started building with natural materials in 1999 when he built his own earth-sheltered, straw-bale house. Realizing his passion Peter apprenticed himself to Etienne Bruwer, architect and father of green building in South Africa, and worked around South Africa, with many different natural building materials and techniques. In 2004 he moved his focus to Cape Town and ran a natural building company there for six years. In 2010, Peter shifted his focus to training, mentoring and building the profile of natural and sustainable building in southern Africa. To this end he facilitates CPD accredited natural building courses and provides an online platform for people involved and interested in natural building, including architects, owner-builders, educators and social development practitioners. He continues to provide consultation and project management services to private, public and development sectors.

The Benjamin Projects, represented by Roger De Wet were nominated as RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Heroes.
Their purpose is to create an enabling environment for young men, allowing them to grow in wisdom, stature, favor with God and favor with man. (Luke 2:52)
Benjamin Projects is a mentorship through sports program with a two-fold objective.
First, in their ADOPT A CHILD project, to mentor a minimum of 20 boys from grade 3 to matric who start their school career at Heathfield Primary then progress to various feeder high schools. These young men show a definite gifting with regards to their sporting abilities. They offer holistic support during the formative years and walk alongside parents and guardians creating opportunities for the boys to grow into the potential that lies within them.
Second as part of their ADOPT A SCHOOL project deliver the CRICKET WITH CHARACTER (CWC) life skills program to create the environment for children to participate, play, progress and become proficient in the game of cricket.

Cape Medical Response (CMR), represented by Darren Zimmerman & David Behr were nominated as RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Heroes.
The Group comprises Cape Medical Response (CMR), their emergency medical rapid response unit, and CMR Ambulance Services (CMRAS), the ambulance transportation unit.
Both CMR and CMRAS are on duty 24-hours a day, 365 days a year, and residents and businesses can become members by paying a low monthly membership fee.
Every year they treat in excess of four thousand emergency medical cases, and are proud of their role in providing vital and life-saving medical services to their members and the community they serve.

The Caregivers from Nerina Gardens and Carlisle Lodge Retirement Homes, represented by Sister Sandy Lovick, were nominated as RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Heroes.
Nerina Gardens Retirement Village is a well-appointed establishment set in secure, spacious grounds with stunning mountain views. ‘Nerina’ is well known for its lovely gardens which are tended by some residents who are assisted by our gardening staff.

Gillian McCulloch from Tom Ro Haven for Equines and Children was selected as a RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Hero of the Quarter (Apr to Jun 2022). The announcement was made on the Drive Zone by Kevin Jacobs from RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula.
Established in 2012, Tom Ro Haven is a registered NPO which rescues abused and neglected horses and ponies and rehabilitates them at their premises in Noordhoek, Cape Town. The horses and ponies at the Haven are then used in equine assisted healing programmes, focusing on children and young adults deemed to be at risk, or who have suffered from physical or emotional trauma. By using horses to heal and awaken empathy, compassion and respect, the Haven aims to not only change the lives of horses, but to positively impact the local community too.

Karoline Hanks was nominated as a RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Hero for her work with Project Noordhoeked.
Project Noordhoeked is a non-profit community project. With funds raised (regular donors and annual fundraising events), they create jobs for four men for three days a week. They pick up rubbish along our roadways, in the wetland and on the beach. They also collect dog poo at the various beach pathways. They manage Kakapo the wire whale (which facilitates regular and ongoing beach cleanups by the beach-going public), and in so doing, hope to create awareness about the effects of single use plastic and our own personal waste footprint. Our team have been trained up to clear and treat alien invasive plants, and we conduct regular clearing of various hotspots in and around Noordhoek.
Our model is informed by the "broken window" theory, where we aspire to creating a clean environment for which residents can be proud and want to look after, and to try and encourage those moving through, to NOT trash the environment.

Akim Riemer was nominated as a RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula Valley Hero for his work with The Green Guerrillas project.
The Green Guerrillas is a small dynamic group, passionate about the ecological balance of earth, regimental in thinking on the welfare of animals, and united together for a sustainable future, no lip service or green washing, seeking guidance from nature, a logical and positive approach to earth.
Akim grew his first food plants at 9 years, and from then on has always had a fascination of the free energy nature so generously extends to us. He is taught by his mistakes and the wise people that were there to guide him. He is an advocator of empathy farming. His driving force is to highlight the massive hidden potential of harnessing the exponential energy of microbes, his passion is to express the fundamentally problems of how we slaughter animals for food, and how empathy farming is the solution.

Shadrick Valayadum (Pastor Shaddie) from My Father’s House was selected as a Remax Premier South Peninsula Valley Hero for May 2022. The announcement was made on the Brunch Zone by Kevin Jacobs from RE/MAX Premier South Peninsula.
My Father’s House is a self-funded non-government organization with a holistic focus on the physical, mental and spiritual health of the poor and vulnerable of Cape Town, South Africa. Born out of over 20 years of caring for the poor and vulnerable, they have, in recent times, had to adjust its focus and increase its efforts. They work hand in hand with various organizations as well as running their own programmes. With the ever increasing lack of food security becoming a major issue, My Father’s House provides support, equipment and training to set-up and maintain community kitchens in Red Hill and Ocean View at present. Another core area is the rehabilitation and re-homing / reintegration of street people.
