The 2024 Hampton Classic Grand Prix was anticipated to be one of the most thrilling show jumping competitions of the year. Fresh off multiple international Olympic riders having challenged each other in Paris, they are now facing off once again in another significant contest. Eight Olympic riders were in Bridgehampton, Long Island, New York in pursuit of the high honors of winning the prestigious 5 star Grand Prix, sponsored by Longines with total purse money of $400,000 dollars.
40 Riders competed in the first Grand Prix round, with 8 riders progressing to the second- round jump-off, after having had faultless rides. Only the first and second place riders in round 2 were faultless. The final placement was 1st going to Rene Dittmer of Germany aboard his horse Corsica X. He was half a second faster than the second place USA finisher Mimi Gochman aboard her horse Inclen BH. Alex Matz, also a USA rider, finished 3rd with 4 faults riding his horse Ikigai. The remaining order of the Grand Prix finish was Shane Sweetnam 4th, Nayel Nassar 5th, McLain Ward 6th, Darragh Kenny 7th, Jordan Coyle 8th, Carly Anthony 9th, and Georgina Bloomberg 10th. There was a formal Awards presentation in the arena immediately after completion of the competition. And there was the ceremonial Winner’s Lap taken by Rene Dittmer aboard Corsica X. This was all followed by the traditional Press Conference after the Winner’s Lap.
Prior to the Longines Hampton Classic 5* Grand Prix, the Classic honored eight riders who represented their countries in this summer’s Paris Olympic Games as part of the Grand Prix opening ceremonies: Daniel Bluman (ISR), Mario Deslauriers (CAN), Thaisa Erwin (AUS), Kent Farrington (USA), Darragh Kenny (IRL). Nayel Nasser (EGY), Shane Sweetnam (IRL), and McLain Ward (USA).
Dittmer said, “My horse was unbelievable this week. She jumped five clear rounds and didn’t have a rail down all week. I tried to go faster without being too crazy. I knew Jordan (Coyle) and McLain (Ward) were coming after me, so I had to do what I could to make them chase the time. It worked because if McLain had gone clear, he would’ve been faster and won. Today went in my favor, and it really is just unbelievable.”
Enjoy. DrB aka HorseDoc(R)

The 2024 Hambletonian and Oaks Championship races at the Meadowlands on Saturday, August 3rd were amongst the most exciting in all of Harness Horseracing History.

There were 10 talented contestants in both the Hambletonian for 3-year-old trotters, and 10 entries in the Hambletonian Oaks open to 3-year-old trotting mares. There was an anticipated high-stakes match-up battle in the Hambletonian between this year's two super-stars 'Karl' and 'TCI'. However, any horse in either of these races had a chance of winning.

The day started with extreme sun and heat but quickly turned to torrential rain downpours at the very beginning of the $1M Hambletonian Stakes. The rain only subsided shortly after the nail biting finish. This 8-min documentary memorializes the drama and achievement of the 2024 Hambletonian Day with an am;zing final stretch performance by 'Karl'.

This pre-Travers coverage drew one of my largest single audiences and still draws viewers. It contains discussion of the 4 major horses of 2023 meeting up against each other at the most significant mid-Summer race at Saratoga. Trainers and horses include HOF Tr. Pletcher w ‘Forte’, which won Eclipse Award 2-yr-old of year who was disqualified under contention from KY Derby; Trs. Delgado w KDerby winner Mage; Preakness winner National Treasure for HOF/Controversial (banned from KDerby) Tr. Baffert; HOF Tr. Lukas discussing Arrogate who won Travers in 2016 & who sired 2023 Belmont Stakes winner Archangelo thereby making Tr. Antonucci the first female to win a Triple Crown Race and being interviewed by every major TV outlet; HOF Tr. Zito (who rarely gives any interviews these days) & Tr. Romans (who shares a moving personal story about beating 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah with Keen Ice as he won the Travers; HOF Tr. Mott discussing his entry Scotland and his current most talked about horse who was named 2023 Eclipse Award Horse of the Year ‘Cody’s Wish’, and others. Saratoga has historically been named “The Graveyard of Champions” and I believe I captured the personal side of track legends whom the public never gets to meet, especially not all at the same race. The style of my interview is more of a historical documentary nature in advance of the event. Eclipse Award Horse of the Year honors and $1.25 Million was on the line, plus future breeding value of 2023’s best 4 contenders. I can’t recall such a significant Travers having ever occurred, at least not in my lifetime. This show will be replayed long after I’m gone! Best DrB aka HorseDoc(R)

On Saturday, February 24th, White Abarrio, with trainer Rick Dutrow and jockey Irad Ortiz, are competing to win the $20 Million Dollar Saudi Cup. White Abarrio is favored to win following an amazing year including winning the prestigious $6- Million Dollar Breeders’ Cup Classic thereby making him the best older horse in the country at 1-1/8 miles on dirt. As impressive as his performance is, Abarrio’s path to the pinnacle of current racing elite is equally amazing. And the horses he will be competing against are similarly talented.

White Abarrio was initially sold as a yearling for $7,000, then picked-up in a 2-year-old training sale for $40,000, then sold to partnering owners for an undisclosed larger sum after only his first very impressive race win. He raced successfully under 3 different trainers, and several different owner partnerships. His current trainer, Rick Dutrow, took over the reins during his first year back after a 10-year hiatus sitting out of racing. To date White Abarrio won nearly $5-Million Dollars in purses. A minority stake in the horse was purchased by Prince Faisal of Saudi Arabia, with the race taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Impressiv competitors of note are: Bob Baffert’s National Treasure, Todd Fincher’s Senor Buscador, Dallas Stewarts’s Hoist the Gold, Brad Cox’s Saudi Crown, Lemon Pop, Derma Sotogake, Ushba Tesoro, and others. Interviewees for this documentary about White Abarrio include: Trainers Rick Dutrow, Carlos Perez, Gustavo Delgado Jr., David Duggan; Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr; and C2 Racing’s Mark Cornette. Secretariat ‘Big Red’ won the Triple Crown on June 9th, 1973. 50 Years later several racing insiders share their stories of how this historic Monster of a racehorse forever affected their lives. Each person experienced an extraordinary time in our lives that will never be forgotten. Many Thanks to HOF Jockeys Ron Turcotte, Eddie Maple, Laffit Pincay Jr, Jorge Velasquez, Jacinto Vasquez, Braulio Baeza, Angel Cordero Jr, and Sandy Hawley; Jockey Agent Vince DeGregory; Trainer Steve Jerkens on behalf of HOF Trainer Allen Jerkens; Trainers Carlos Martin and Gary Contessa on behalf of HOF Trainer Frank ‘Pancho’ Martin; Legendary Racing Broadcasters Charlsie Cantey, Dave Johnson, and Tom Durkin; and others who assisted with this production.
In the early 70s, I had the unique opportunity to assist Dr. Mark Gerard at Belmont Park, as he worked on many of that era’s greatest racehorses. The most memorable experience was meeting the GOAT ‘Secretariat’. Of equal importance was recording the memories of many of the supporting cast from that time.
