St. Lutgardis is a fascinating saint, mystic and stigmatist. She was the second reported stigmatist of the church, and was the first woman to receive the stigmata.
Her story surrounding her apparitions of Jesus and His heart, were also precursors to the Sacred Heart devotion.

The bible isn't just a text to for historical and scriptural insight. In fact, the bible has always been a means to have a unique, personal, direct discussion with God. This is most seen in the meditative practice of Lectio Divina, but sadly, this practice has fallen away for many spiritual seekers, despite it still being highly recommended today.

In the final episode in our trilogy on St. Teresa of Avila, we look into her best-known work, The Interior Castle. Here she discusses the path of the soul on its journey to God. While the Interior Castle is a very deep work, for simplicity, I'll be focusing on the main grades of prayer in it's "mansion". This is a very approachable way to view the Castle, and also a practical approach.

Following this episode, I will soon be off on a brief hiatus to write my series on the mystics. Thus, I felt it was time to open up about my own experiences with the divine.
This isn't to set myself apart, as I am a broken human like us all - but to showcase my philosophy, of how spirituality should start from the heart, and be an exercise of love, rather than an exercise of logic.
In this reflection, I discuss real experiences I've had in prayer that have shaped my view on God, that has allowed me to go beyond logic, beyond the human, and rest in the mystery.

This reflection focuses on some of the teachings that I found along the way that allowed me to see church teaching in a new light. Not necessarily in a way that made me fall in love with the institution per se, but more so, teachings that allowed me to be quite comfortable at my home altar and at the altar of a church.
We discuss spiritual systems, spiritual trauma, and some alternative views and mindsets that I found enlightening when approaching Christian mysticism and spirituality.
After a year of podcasting on Catholic saints, and the spiritual system surrounding them - here are a few key things that have strongly stayed with me. Here I explore the concept of spiritual systems, and how the saints and other Catholic rituals offer a complete system not only for our temporal lives, but our spiritual lives, too.
I also look into ritual, the avoidance of superstition, and the true role the saints play in our lives.
As we wrap up a year of St. Anthony's Tongue, I am sharing a few takeaways and reflections that I've had during this journey. I want to start with the concept of Catholic Witchcraft and Magic.
The saints seem to appear in various folk rituals, which now run into what some call "folk magic" and with the rise of the term "witchcraft" - many have incorporated saints into these forms of spirituality. Therefore, I get asked a lot about saints in this framework.
In this episode I reflect on:

- The differences between magic and traditional Catholic rituals.
- Why I do not call myself a witch, folk magician - and just call myself a Catholic.
- The mental pitfalls of superstition.
- The "hungry ghost realm" issue.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of saints have had a devotion to the Christ Child, but today - it seems silly, rather than important.
However, I'd argue this devotion is perfect for those struggling with spiritual or religious trauma. It's also a great topic that uncovers so many areas of cultural Catholicism.

The Holy Eucharist is the key to understanding a lot of Catholic mysticism, however, I find a lot of the true essence is left out when explaining it. Especially it’s Jewish roots.

St. Anthony of the Desert is one of the most interesting saints of all. He is what is known as a "desert father" - and his legend largely involves his time spent meditating on God, as well as his courageous battles against the demonic. His stories have inspired some of the most famous artists of all time, such as Michelangelo and Dali, as well as inspired those who also may want to move into the desert to pray - or those battling demons of their own.
This saint is personally interesting to me, as he's a saint that often hated being asked for things while alive - and in some cultures, he is also seen as a saint to not mess with as a spirit either, but when he does come through for you, he comes through in a very powerful way.

Fr. Mychal Judge was a hero of 9/11, but he was a hero long before the attacks. He was a well loved AIDs victim advocate, a gay man, a recovering alcoholic, a friend to the homeless, a man with a radical love that often rubbed church officials the wrong way.
Personally, he reminds me of the Catholicism I grew up with - charitable, open, and loving. One day, I pray this man will become a saint, and this episode is my dedication to him, and in hopes of that future cause.

St. John the Baptist is an incredible interesting figure. While there is lore around secret societies that argue his importance, there is also double speak, contradiction and just odd language in the canonical gospels as well. There seems to be an attempt to both play-up St. John, while also downplaying him.
What were the writers of the gospel of St. John hiding? Did he really believe he was the prophet Elijah? Did he have doubts? Was the baptism real?

The primary source for this episode was John the Baptist in History and Theology by Joel Marcus.
St. John the Baptist is one of favorite saints. Not only does he have an interesting story biblically, but he also has so much lore surrounding him. He is revered in folklore and folk practices, while also being considered one of the main players in the story of Christ's life, death and resurrection. He is closely tied to herbalism, he has conspiracy theories and secret societies that revere him.
He is a unique saint, but there's also been a lot done to mask his power - which I hope to uncover in this two part series on St. John the Baptist.

Hell is one of the most weaponized aspects of mainstream Christianity.
However, the concept of an eternal torment is no where to be found in scripture, and even “hell” itself has been a tragic mistranslation. A mistranslation takes away the nuance of what could occur once we die.

What an underrated Saint! Dismas has everything - a mysterious backstory, a personal revelation with Christ, and also a folk background that includes potions that can protect homes from break-ins.
St. Dismas is often called The Good Thief, he was the man that was crucified next to Christ, and due to his compassion, was invited personally by Jesus into the kingdom.
Dismas is an incredibly powerful Saint ally and intercessor - he can be invoked for protection against theft and crimes, he is also a patron Saint when you feel you are in a hopeless position. However, he is also incredibly symbolic - Jesus invited him into Kingdom due to his compassion and heart, not due to subscribing to a dogma or even being the perfect person. He reconciled his past, and he can also assist us in reconciling with others, and especially reconciling with our own selves.

Blessed wine is a underused tool in folk magic. It can be used in healing, protection and even divination. In this bonus episode, we discuss using wine blessed on St. John's feast day for healing and protection, but we also discuss using tarot cards to charge wine, as well as using wine for divination.
