Thoughts May Vary: Recent Episodes

Gabriela Ulloa & Meadowlark Monaghan

Thoughts May Vary is a podcast about changing our minds. With the common threads of mental health and nuance weaved throughout each conversation, TMV encourages its listeners to share what they’re learning in real time while illuminating the process. Garnering the power of community, TMV hopes to make personal development less isolating and far more genuine. Life is about the journey, not the destination, so why not make the ride interesting?

Hosted Gabriela Ulloa and Meadowlark Monaghan, Thoughts May Vary brings new episodes each Monday that feature in-time lessons from the co-hosts and their guests. Opinions change, mentalities waver, and thoughts most definitely may vary.

Pull out those notebooks because today’s lesson in community care is a powerful one! Today, we are welcoming licensed social worker and mental health educator, Minaa B, to the podcast to learn all about Owning Our Struggles and healing in community care. From how to be a better peer to culturally competent mental health care, we spoke about how self care is the bridge to community care; and community care is the bridge to community healing.

Throughout this conversation we covered:

  • Minaa’s new book “Owning Our Struggles: A Path to Healing and Finding Community in a Broken World”
  • Navigating community care + mental health advice on the internet
  • How Minaa’s personal experiences influenced her philosophy
  • Realizing the power of group therapy
  • How to recognize when content isn’t for you (& more on digital communities)
  • Community care translation into politics + systematic level community healing
  • Minaa’s favorite actionable healing tools
  • Gratitude, grounding, co-regulating with community, & more
  • 5 quick tips to be a better peer

As Minaa reminds us, “we are not healing to exist within a vacuum; we are healing to integrate into community”. In OWNING OUR STRUGGLES (on sale: 08/22/23)Minaa helps us to find the courage to start accepting and healing from our pasts through the power of self-realization and community care.

In this powerful and practical guide, Minaa shares therapeutic tools, client stories, and actionable insights to help you on your healing journey, along with reflections from her personal experiences. Each chapter focuses on a common emotional struggle—from moving past isolation and despair, to navigating racial trauma, developing emotional maturity, and finding our village.

Please welcome back one of our most favorite people, Johanna Kandel!

Johanna is the founder of The Alliance for Eating Disorders — the nation’s leading nonprofit providing referrals, education, and support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones. After recovering from a long battle with various EDs, she founded The Alliance, bringing her personal insight into the incredible work that she does.

Last time Johanna graced TMV (“Thought 55. Johanna Kandel On Supporting Yourself When You Have An Eating Disorder”), the response was overwhelming! Y’all loved her wisdom, vulnerability, and tangible tools. So, this week, we brought her back for a community Q&A. We asked her many of your questions including early signs to tell you’re relapsing, how to implement boundaries, navigating food guilt, body neutrality vs. body positivity, and more.

From 29:15 - 35:23 we speak to questions related to strategies around eating + nourishing your body (re: food guilt, building healthy relationships with food while eating “well”, + tips to nourish yourself). While there are no specifics in here, if this feels a little activating to you go ahead and skip go the next question at 35:23 <3

0:17 UN Event Recap

7:42 Johanna’s Unpacking

10:52 Q&A starts! Q1: I’m sick of talking about my ED because nothing has changed even after talking about it a lot. Any advice?

16:19 Q2: Early signs to tell you’re relapsing + how to open up to a partner when you know you are relapsing

21:19 Q3: Any thoughts or advice for those who fall into disordered eating but not full ED?

24:35 Q4: Is there anything The Alliance For ED is doing to help facilitate revisions to the DSM?

25:37 Q5: How to put boundaries with your friends on topics to voice without feeling “sensitive”?

29:28 Q6: I finally feel free from food guilt or the fear of certain “unhealthy foods” but now I feel like I eat in a really chaotic way without being conscious of what I eat for the fear of being obsessive with it again. How do I build a healthy relationship with food while also eating “well”?

31:33 Q7: I’m trying so hard to eat but nothing sounds good. Tips for nourishing yourself when it just feels hard?

36:26 Q8: How to achieve body neutrality? Don’t think I can get to body positivity?

41:12 Q9 I still engage in some behaviors that aren’t as detrimental as others just to ensure less anxiety. What are the best tools to calm down to stop a purge or engagement?

45:11 Q10 How to support a friend who is deep into an ED and getting worse?

47:11 Q11 I’ve been struggling with an ED for 10+ years, can you ever say you’re recovered?

The Alliance offers comprehensive services, including:

• Educational presentations and training days

• Free, weekly, therapist-led support groups nationwide (virtual and in-person) for those experiencing eating disorders and for their loved ones

• Support and referrals through both our free help-line and comprehensive referral website/app

• Direct, low-cost, life-saving, outpatient treatment to underinsured and uninsured adults in the South Florida community.

• Unique and empowering Southern Smash scale smashing events and SmashTALK panel discussions.

Well well well, if it isn't the hypothetical smoke circle of the century back at it again for another pod ep. Maryah Greene is a New York based Plant Doctor & Stylist and founder of the plant design firm, Greene Piece. She is a former elementary educator and graduate from the Bank Street College of Education. Seemingly unrelated, Maryah’s time spent in the classroom coupled with her journey as NYC’s go-to plant specialist, sprouted her debut picture book, Good Things (published by Penguin Random House). Much like her plants, Maryah knows what it’s like to start from seed and has no intention of stopping anytime soon.

Ever wondered why self worth is the key to manifesting? Looking for expansive friendships? Want to get what this Lucky Girl Syndrome is all about? Let’s just start by saying… you manifested this episode.

Where to even begin with this episode? You can actively see m+g’s brains working to process in real time. Today, we are joined by Jessica Gill, Director of Podcast & Media at To Be Magnetic + Co-Host of The Expanded Podcast. To Be Magnetic is the #1 destination for neural manifestation with a unique process backed by neuroscience, psychology, EMDR, epigenetics, and energetics with a little spirituality sprinkled on top. We chat all about TBM’s protocol and the role of self worth when it comes to manifesting. We unpacked the importance of short-term manifestations and answered some of your questions including overcoming fear of failure, how to manifest when you’re depressed, and what happens when you’re not seeing results.

It’s National Eating Disorder Awareness Week and today we are talking to one of our favorite people, Johanna Kandel. Johanna is the founder of The Alliance for Eating Disorders — the nation’s leading nonprofit providing referrals, education, and support to individuals experiencing eating disorders and their loved ones. After recovering from a long battle with various EDs (which we get into), she founded The Alliance, bringing so much of her personal insight into the incredible work that she does. This conversation was packed with vulnerability, wisdom, and resources.

With Johanna, we discussed the genetic link to eating disorders and the power of understanding what is in our control, understanding when it’s time for treatment vs things you can do on your own, the power of a diagnosis (and dangers in self diagnosis), thoughts on dieting (don’t get her started on ozempic), and how to talk to someone you are concerned about.

They also have an incredible Instagram as well as will be hosting virtual support groups all week long for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week Feb 27—March 5

Today’s episode is all about examining how root beliefs about ourselves can manifest as triggers in different ways. You’ve probably heard us say that life likes to present you with opportunities to learn a lesson or to heal a wound. Oftentimes, despite the breadth of experiences in which these opportunities show up, the lesson remains the same. Today, we share some of our core wounds and examples of how life likes to throw us scenarios in which to practice healing said wounds.

Today, we cover:

0:00-7:32 smells, bonfires, & late nights out

7:33-10:34 setting the scene

10:35-14:25 m+g’s take on core wounds

14:26-22:38 g’s core wound unpacking

22:39-29:23 m’s core wound unpacking

29:24-35:55 good enough to not need receipts

35:56-42:50 therapy then and now

We also got into his latest venture, Temple of Weirdness & Wellness, and some of the lasting coping strategies that have impacted him (hint, think: cold plunges, breathwork, meditation, stoicism, and plant medicine, to name a few).

Today’s unpacking is a reminder that healing isn’t linear. We can be in one of the best places we’ve been in (emotionally, mentally, interpersonally, etc) *and* still have a lot of work left to do. We also get into a conversation about what it means to compartmentalize your identity in community spaces and allowing people access to you.

Today, we cover:

Isaac Hindin-Miller, or Isaac Likes, is a man who has truly lived nine lives. From a writer published in The New York Times, GQ, & Esquire to DJ-ing for Dior, YSL, Vogue, Yeezy, Cartier, Adidas, and more; he also throws inclusive parties all over the world called I Like You that bring celebrity, youth, and culture all together under one roof. He’s been sober for 8 years, he’s working on his vulnerability (which you’ll hear a lot of), and he’s been breaking out of self awareness hell through traditional and non-traditional mental health support.

This week, our thoughts with Isaac covered:

  • Social hierarchy vs inclusivity at parties
  • The only thing worse than our problems is our solutions
  • Non-traditional therapy and healing
  • Self awareness hell
  • Sobriety in the nightlife industry

Happy mercury retrograde! That’s our feeble attempt at a positive Mercury reframe. Please enjoy listening to us more thoughtfully describe different ways we approach breaking our negative patterns (hint: one of them is reframing) in today’s episode.

Today’s Thoughts include:

  • We’re not working to get 1% better everyday (aka healing isn’t linear)

Today we’re talking shop. As two women who thought they found their dream jobs to up-and-quit to go freelance—and loving it— we each get asked about our professional journeys a lot. Today, we chat a bit about thoughts on what learning to be your own boss/coworker/agents look like, finding professional validation in the right and wrong places, and learning how to brag, professionally speaking, in a truthful and self confident way. We’re joined by Meredith Fineman, the author of “Brag Better: Master the Art of Fearless Self-Promotion”, who chats with us about how we can learn to get loud, proud, and strategic about sharing their skills and accomplishments with the world.

Send us in your work questions on IG or Patreon and we’ll do an “all things work Q&A” on our Patreon this month! Ask questions: https://www.patreon.com/thoughtsmayvary

We’re back from vacation! Well, truthfully this was recorded prior to vacation. But we’re back to our regularly scheduled programming! Please enjoy today’s Thoughts which include:

  • Abusive relationship’s impact over time + how that is contributing to Meadow justifying shopping more
  • How we’ll take crying in therapy in person > on Zoom any day
  • Where shadow work + self worth meet
  • An appeal for more body hair (and/or removal of) in Hollywood

  • Using our triggers as a roadmap!!!
  • And as per usual, a good ole “impact of social media” discussion

Today’s Thought is an extra special one. TMV is honored to welcome Dana Dang, a dear friend and absolute digital media genius, to the pod. Dana is a dear friend of our silly cohosts whose openness and graciousness in this episode signifies how she moves through life as a whole. But first, her genius—

Dana Dang is the Founder of Digital Media Architects, a new approach on digital brand marketing that aligns more with the greater good of humanity, organic community building and making social media social again (what a concept). She has executed brand deals / partnerships between Delta, Dior, Chloe, Lyft, HBO, Heineken, Grey Goose, Four Seasons Hotel Group, Ace Hotel Group, just to name a few.

She also just so happens to have one of the most incredible journeys and life stories we’ve heard. So in addition to speaking to her monumental work, Dana gave us an entire Masterclass of human resilience.

This week, the girl’s are back with a solo Thought to discuss the dynamics of having people in your life who are uninterested in personal development when you’re on your self growth game. Spoiler alert: it’s all about nuance, grace, + empath with boundaries.

Thoughts range from:

  • watching people you love make shitty decisions + how to know if you’re being helpful or a burden
  • what to do when you don’t like your friend’s partner
  • how to help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves
  • the balance between energetic access and boundaries

Content Warning: Disordered eating & abortions

This episode is not what we thought it would be. Shortly after the overturn of Roe v Wade, this conversation is very much us unpacking and processing in real time - which is basically the mission statement of the pod so despite how chaotic and inconclusive this episode feels to us, we stand by it. If this isn’t the conversation you want to hear today, we’ll see you next week with an incredible guest episode.

This episode was recorded before the overturn of Roe v. Wade. We hope it brings some healthy distraction and laughter. Please take care of yourself because we need you. How can we show up for a revolution without chaos? By going higher. Taking accountability, thoughtfully owning our energy, emotions, and actions. We have to heal ourselves to heal the world.

Well, well, well if it isn’t Gaby’s long lost hermana. Please give a warm welcome to Tefi Pessoa, the content creator and media personality the world needs. The TikTok legend, TEDx speaker, and certified Miami mami not only solves Meadow’s identity issues and Gaby’s q’s about masculine and feminine energies, but also gives Meadow an intro into what being from Miami means while reminding Gaby who tf she is. Put it this way, within the first 5 minutes of the episode, Meadow heard Gaby’s voice hit octaves she didn’t know where possible. Thoughts span from: confidence with bad bitch dimples (aka cellulite), self empowerment/not letting other’s tell you who you are, code switching from too-latina to not-latina-enough, and so much more. Stay tuned to the very end for the drama that was a round of “This or That: Miami Edition.” Don’t forget to do your homework before the episode (links below). Besitos.

For Thought 04, the girls are joined by their friend and gifted author, Cole Brown. The three discuss thoughts on: being Black in white spaces, how to move through identity formation when people project narratives onto you, separating Cole the person from Cole the character, and the dichotomy between caring so much about your words and art.

Cole also dives into his the thoughts behind his work, touching on the cowriting process of working on Matt James' (the first Black Bachelor) new book as well as the dichotomy between caring so much about his words only to relinquish creative control while turning it into a TV show (yeah, Greyboy was picked up by ABC Signature and Yara Shahidi's 7th Sun production company with Cole as an Executive Producer.)

Welcome to Vicious Cycle! Where we rehash old Thoughts during our hiatus until Season 2. We're starting you off with one of the girls' favs. Enjoy!

This Thought is a tried-and-true stream of consciousness between the two girls as they unpack the complexities of having trauma as a part of their ~brand~

Thoughts run from:

  • Do you think you guys would’ve been friends in high school?
  • What sign is Gaby's horrible ex?

A quick thank you from the girls:

our goal has always been to have tmi+taboo conversations around mental health/all of the nuances that go into being human (hi relationships, sex, and everything in between) as well as to build a community of people who want to air out their shit while learning in real time with us. what we didn’t see coming was the support, love, hype, and friendship y’all would bring to each other too. you’ve come together to support one another in ways we never imagined and we’re so excited for what’s to come. we promise to continue to show up authentically and vulnerably each week in an effort to hopefully remind you that you are most definitely not alone. so while we’re taking a lil episode break (it’s a month don't @ us), we’ll be yelling on tiktok and of course ig so be sure to stay tapped in. catch us on monday for thought 22 because yes, we are just ~that~ annoying that we ended our season with 22 episodes because hello, angels etc. we adore each and every one of you. con mucho amor and infinite gratitude, m+g

For the last guest episode of Season 01, the girls were joined by friend and creative activist, Dom Roberts. This girl-time packed Thought covers all thoughts from:

  • Dating (the hair test, sexual boundaries, etc)
  • Why Dom ended her ‘The Uncomfortable Podcast’
  • How having “digital activist” as part of your public identity, mixed with people-pleasing tendencies, leads to being robbed of your Black joy
  • Unlearning people pleasing tendencies to realize that setting boundaries + taking care of ourselves isn’t selfish

Stay tuned for the end of this Thought when, in honor of Dom ending her podcast ‘The Uncomfortable Podcast’, we ended with a very revealing rapid-fire with uncomfortable questions only, including Dom’s funniest sex story, the last fight her and bestie Kenzie Elizabeth got into, the whackest brand campaign she ever did, and most memorable DM she’s ever gotten.

This week, the girls discuss mental health stigma’s reputation as a cultural flaw (when it should be viewed through a lens of racism) and how coping is valid whether you’re smoking a cigarette or making compassionate space for your feelings in a therapy setting. The most grounding and validating pod we deserve to start our Mondays with - please give a warm, TMV welcome to Jesse Israel. Jesse is a social entrepreneur, meditation leader, and former record label executive who is a master of community. You might have heard of him - his meditation movement, The Big Quiet, has led mass meditations in iconic places like Madison Square Garden, featured musical performances from artists like Miguel, and even went on tour with Oprah from 2019-2020. Today, Jesse reminds us that true thought leaders lead with vulnerability, within boundaries, by sharing with us his recent internal transformation.

In conversation, thoughts range from:

  • Modeling vulnerability by speaking from a scar vs a wound
  • Manifesting? Try Manifucking
  • A lesson on boundaries Jesse learned from Brene Brown
  • A Quick Guide To Getting (Back) Into Meditation

Stay tuned at the end of the episode when Jesse leads us all in a quick Big Quiet Mass Virtual Meditation to set us up for the rest of our day!

People tend to act like life begins at the age of fame for those thrown into the spotlight. It’s an ironic story for someone who is the living embodiment of ‘leading your own charge’. Natalie Joy, certified surgical technologist and model, was thrown into said spotlight primarily through the lens of her partner, entrepreneur and former Bachelor, Nick Viall. Little does that following know how resilient, tenacious, and grounded this woman truly is. Which is why our cohosts were beyond honored to peel back the curtain and share another amazing woman and dear friend's story. This week, Natalie so generously shared her thoughts on:

  • Her origin story: chasing after dreams no matter what your path looks like
  • Finding healthy love after abuse
  • Coping with projections in media (‘would you ever take life advice from these people?’)
  • Positive self talk and reframing as a way to build in confidence
  • Romanticizing your life for yourself, not for the consumption of others

The good moods are infectious. Thank you again Natalie!

Content Warning: This episode includes conversation around abusive relationships, from roughly the 25-30 minute mark, with strong verbiage around physical abuse. If that feels activating for you in any way, skip this portion or come back another Monday, we’ll be here :)

This week, TMV welcomes icon and role model Chrissy Rutherford to the pod! Chrissy is a living embodiment of everything the girls love: an editorial and social media legend with over 12 years in the industry who also champions mental health and cofounded 2BG Consulting with fellow editor Danielle Prescod to consult for fashion and beauty brands (along with influencers) on how to implement anti-racist communication strategies. Her career is so impressive that naturally the girl’s spent little-to-no time covering it. Instead, they got to know Chrissy’s thoughts on:

  • Self discovery and personal development as a lifelong journey
  • Operating on your own timeline and finding peace within yourself (rather than external sources)
  • How her family reacts to her open vulnerability of their family dynamics online
  • Where anxiety meets spirituality from life lessons to meditation

This week, Gaby vulnerably and generously shares her thoughts on her experience at the Hoffman Process (a week-long healing retreat of transformation and development for people who feel stuck in their life). As a Hoffman legacy, she knew this therapy bootcamp would as expected as going to college in her family, but she always stood firm on going on her own terms. And thankfully so, for this very life-changing time spent at Hoffman became what she decided to publicly share about (despite the stigma) on one beloved mental health blog - The Local Optimist - while Meadow was still managing it. And the rest is history.

This conversation we chat about Maddi’s thoughts on:

  • Being forced to grow up quickly while unintentionally falling into the public eye
  • Why she left the internet and how she found herself in food (plus how she’s feeling being back on the internet have you seen these woman’s vlogs they are the safest sweetest place on the internet)

Three best friends sit down to talk all things sex. You’re welcome. This week’s thought features the pod’s resident sex fairy, Meadow’s long-time bff, Gaby’s new(ish) bff, and founder of the best underwear company in the world b.WR, Sara Shokouhi. From the brand’s birth-story and it’s sexual wellness roots to pity fucking, slut-shaming, why Gaby refuses to have mediocre sex and why Sara deserves an award for never faking an orgasm—no topic is off limits. Because that’s the whole point, isn’t it? To cultivate enough of an approachable and (hopefully) educational narrative around a very basic and primal need.

Plus, the girls unpack why anger may just be their best motivator (sounds super healthy) and deprogramming cultural stigmas while Sara poses the valuable question: how are we expected to be fully functional sexual beings if we’re never taught anything and what we are potentially taught is dripping in shame? Get ready for quite the listen and join the girls on their quest to debunk the myth that the person you marry will inventively be shitty in bed.

Friend, entrepreneur, model, and pilates instructor - Tasha Franken - joins Gaby and Meadow for Thought 07 where the three begin to scratch the surface on the mind-body connection.

Tasha’s thoughts move from her experience healing with an eating disorder, to her “scout story”, to how the phrase ‘do what feels good’ is extremely irritating when you can’t trust yourself yet or don’t understand how to connect with your body, to the potential for someone to discover her long lost journals and make millions with a tell-all.

This week’s Thought is a big one. Meadow, as a mental health professional and suicide loss survivor (the girls unpack it, it’s a counterintuitive term they know), shares her personal story and all the tools, tips, and resources she has accumulated in an effort to make suicide prevention less scary. They cover thoughts around Meadow losing her brother, how to have an 'are you suicidal?' conversation, and everything suicide prevention related that should be covered in our public education by now. Again, Meadow is not a licensed therapist, but a mental health worker who worked in non-profits within the Behavioral Healthcare System for many years. If you are in need of immediate support, please dial 911. If you are need of resources or support right now, text HELLO to 741-741 or call the Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.

NOTE: By July 2022, the United States will have a National Suicide Hotline that can be reached by dialing 9-8-8. This Act was signed into law thanks to NAMI! One of the former nonprofits Meadow worked for!

CONTENT WARNING: Today's thought discusses suicide prevention and a story of suicide loss (no means or details mentioned). If that feels activating to you in any way, or if you’re just not in the place today, feel free to come back to us next week. We’ll be here.

This Throwback Thursday (don’t worry, we know it’s Monday), we’re going back in time briefly to when summer was just turning into fall. The girls got on a call to unpack their summer baggage and reflect on their brief podcasting hiatus. Their unfiltered stream-of-consciousness takes you on a journey from thoughts surrounding: consciously choosing confidence each morning to being single for the first time since forming a healthy self-identity to an obligatory gush over their friendship to gaby reading from her journal to diagnosing random skin ailments and discussing their self-prescribed treatment. Enjoy.

This week on TMV, the girls welcome their first guest and internet-turned-irl-friend Sophia Kelly to the podcast. Sophia is a lifestyle and wellness influencer who overshares as much as Gaby and Meadow on the internet. She also has just as many thoughts on topics including-but-lot-limited-to: body image and getting work done, owning your identity after accepting identities that were projected onto you, and grappling with not having the excuse of “bad parents” to blame for your mental health challenges. Warning: Thought 02 also includes Sophia’s life story with answers to all the questions you would have as a follower of the iconic @sophiakelly (formerly @wellnesswithsoph).

Y’all are in for a spicy first thought from the girls. On this inaugural thought (btw we call episodes “thoughts” around here), Meadow & Gaby are opening up about their experiences within toxic and abusive relationships. But before you hear that, the girls had to pop in to record a little intro with a disclaimer about how some new revelations have vastly changed their thinking on the subject. (TLDR; one of us is talking about our experience with a past toxic relationship while they are presently in a healthy relationship…. yeah, well since the time of recording that, the relationship has then ended. the intro has the tea.)

CONTENT WARNING: The girls are discussing toxic and abusive traits, behaviors, and personal experiences. If those subjects feel activating to you in any way, or if you’re just not in the place today, feel free to come back to us next week. We’ll be here.
