In this "My Favourite Tips" episode, we revisit an insightful conversation with divorce coach Jacqueline Wharton. Our focus? Why preparation is the linchpin when it comes to divorce.

Jacqueline underscores that divorce negotiations often extend beyond finances to securing crucial time with your children. Just imagine tackling a significant work negotiation without thorough preparation – it's a non-starter. Jacqueline insists that approaching divorce shouldn't be any different.

Many individuals find the divorce process daunting and shy away from it. However, Jacqueline emphasises that even though it's hard work, getting organised is crucial. This involves understanding the legal process, seeking advice from professionals, getting a grip on your financial details, and recognising your children's routines. She says mental preparation is equally important in this journey.

Being a grandparent in a blended family can generate all sorts of dynamics depending on your situation. Claudette Chenevert, otherwise known as the Stepmom Coach and I discussed many of these at length when we sat down for our chat covering topics relevant for grandparents who find themselves in blended families.

One of the tips she shared during that conversation was about the importance of cherishing the time you have with your grandchildren, even if it's not as much as you'd like. She says quality moments together can make a profound impact on their lives, and she encourages being fully present, creating positive memories, and enjoying each other's company without getting entangled in any complex family dynamics.

She also says, gone are the days of trying to outdo others with lavish gifts and reminds us that what truly matters is how we make our grandchildren feel when we're with them.

One of the biggest complexities of blended families is that they are all different - there is no rulebook, not one size fits all. Because of that, one of my Season 3 guests, blogger Franii Cayley, pointed out some very wise words of advice when it comes to what you’re reading.

She cautions to be careful what you read when you’re looking for advice, because it can be really easy to either feel like you are doing very well compared to what you’re reading, or you’re doing very poorly compared to what you are reading - because the variables are not always the same with your blended family situation and another. She says the added complexity is that the dynamics in your own situation change as you move through different seasons, such as kids moving into the teenage years for example, so the variables can continue to change.

So her biggest tip is to drop the comparison and yes, find comfort in the advice, but don’t look for it to tell you what your next move will look like because everyone’s situations are just so different.

If you have an ex-partner, no doubt there have been moments where you may have wanted to fire off that ranty text - or may have actually even sent it.

Family lawyer and co-author of ‘Surviving Your Split’, Rebekah Mannering, shared some very wise words of advice when it comes to communication with your ex-partner in a previous episode of In The Blend, 'Surviving & Thriving After Your Split'.

She says communication is one of the biggest issues with matters that go to court and advocates it’s important to try and give the other party the benefit of the doubt and to communicate in a way that is constructive. You can think all of the things you like about your ex, but whatever you do, she says just don’t say it.

An important takeaway from the episode with Dr. Kate Owen on 'Setting Boundaries' was the idea of - meaning, when as a parent or stepparent you come up against a rupture (a disconnection) with someone in your blended family - say a stepchild - to know this is really normal and that no human relationship is without its challenges.

Rather than worrying she says what is more important is to focus on the repair process and while it might be difficult to do, to really focus on rebuilding the relationship after the rupture has occurred in an empathic, warm and loving way.

Getting children prepared for back to school can be challenging on its own and can get even more stressful in a non-traditional family.

Additional challenges such as thinking through the logistics of hauling stuff back and forth between houses, clarifying parental roles and communicating those with school teachers and trying to provide schoolwork consistency between houses can make things tricky.

In this episode we cover valuable insight into the ways co-parents can navigate this time well, do their best to make things run smoothly and importantly and ultimately set their kids up for success.

If you’re considering getting some legal advice or support to help navigate issues with your ex - how does one go about finding a good family lawyer? Where do you even start?

Family lawyer and host of The Family Matters podcast Benjamin Bryant, says it’s not as simple as buying a home and paying stamp duty. Legal advice is very discretionary. He says things like reputation, rapport with someone and their ability to offer expert guidance are very important when we’re talking about a care jurisdiction like family law.

Ben says a good lawyer should give you all the  information relating to your circumstance - both positive and negative - that can ultimately help you make an informed decision.

If you’re wondering what other support is available to help when it comes to family law related issues, he also offers up a few additional resources that can be useful alongside (rather than in place of) legal advice.

When your relationship with your ex broke down, your natural inclination may have been to move as far away from them as possible. But when children are involved and you are co-parenting, Sonia Cann-Milland, Melbourne-based counsellor and stepfamily expert, said the geographical distance between the co-parents can make a difference to the effectiveness of the co-parenting relationship.

She says, living nearby to your ex can make it easier in terms of shared access to the children and an ability for both parents to be truly engaged in the child’s community. It also has many benefits from a logistics perspective.

Whilst sometimes it simply might not be possible to live near to your ex, due to remarriage or a job transfer - if it is, Sonia’s tip might just be worth pondering.

If you have an ex-partner, have there been times when you have wanted to perhaps make their life a little bit more difficult? Whether it might be with-holding information about whether you have a new partner, not letting them know you’re going to be away with the children, or speaking to them in an unpleasant way?

Phoebe Wallish of Stepfamilies Australia says the research shows that it’s not how we deal with the kids, it’s that leftover contempt we have for our ex-partner that actually has an impact on the children. She advocates, that whatever your situation, it is important to be reasonable with your ex-partner and provide them with information as appropriate that relates to major changes or activities in your life - such as meeting a new partner, moving house or going away on holidays - and do so before the children do and they hear it from them.

Whilst it might be the last thing you want to do, it is worth keeping in mind that this person is the father or mother of your children. She says if you can treat your ex respectfully and provide them with information that it would be fair to keep a co-parent across, then things can go a whole lot more smoothly for everyone.

Communication is a fundamental requirement to the good functioning of any family - and especially so for a blended family.

Sydney stepfamily psychologist Susan Lancaster, says the holidays are the very best time of year to hone our communication skills.

She says that the technique of really listening to understand somebody creates a calm because you’re giving someone your full attention and you’re making them feel special.

This is a simple thing but a very effective and important one to remember - in particular during the holidays when we have a bit more time than usual. Susan says we should practise listening to understand, not to respond - and will benefit from getting to know your blended family members at a deeper level as part of the process.

The backwards and forwards of kids belongings (especially if you have younger children) can feel like one of the most tedious reminders of life with an ex-partner.

Life Admin Queen, Mia Northropp, has a unique suggestion when it comes to the process of managing kids clothes when they live in two homes. Her idea - doing an annual audit together with your co-parent, is something she says is highly effective.

We all cope with complex situations in different ways - and these arise all the time in blended families. Sometimes our coping skills can be productive - but other times, not so much. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just pick one set of coping skills and use them forever? But the truth is, that rarely works.

Dr Lisa Doodson, says maladaptive coping strategies are often used by step-parents due to the stress and added complexity of their situation; these are coping behaviours that help provide temporary relief in the short term, but hurt in the long term.

So how do we stop and realise that a coping mechanism we are using to perhaps make ourselves feel better when we feel anxious, like avoiding family activities or hiding from difficult conversations with our partner about how we feel - is in fact not actually helping us cope?

Dr Lisa says if you find yourself relying on strategies that are not fixing the issue, that’s when you need to find new ones. She says it’s about taking that deliberate time to reflect on why that strategy might not have worked.

One of my first guests on In The Blend, Joseph Driessen, shared a very interesting idea when it comes to creating harmony within your blended family home - and that was for parents in a household to have a weekly management meeting, just like running a company.

He suggests you regularly review how things are going whether you think you’re making progress against a whole array of family issues - such as 'do we think things are feeling generally more calm or are they still feeling stressful'? and 'How are the children going - is their behaviour off and why might that be? Essentially, it's about approaching blended family life with the same level of care, attention and effort that we’d put into creating a harmonious environment at the office.

As well as the management meeting advice, Joseph also offers up a very useful 5 step approach to discipline.
