Do you know that you don’t just have to live with urinary incontinence?

And it is not something that just happens as you age.

Young women develop urinary incontinence too.

In fact, one in three women who have had children will develop the condition.

I am grateful to be joined by an expert in women’s pelvic health to demystify urinary incontinence.

Samantha King is a physiotherapist with 10 years experience specialising in this field.

Tune in to understand the cause and symptoms of the condition.

We also:

  1. Remove the shame associated with talking about the condition.
  2. Explore the benefits of pelvic floor training and being guided by a trained physiotherapist.
  3. Discuss the benefits of weight loss to reduce the occurrence of stress incontinence.

Now focusing on weight loss can be stressful, frustrating, and overwhelming, which is the last thing you need when you have urinary incontenence, so we discuss the benefits of non-diet and non-weight-focused approaches to achieving your natural healthy weight.

Would you love to feel confident to sustain healthier eating?

Then it is time to find your voice to make choices that build your confidence and renew your relationship with food.

Our topic today was inspired by the 2024 Jean Hailes Women’s Health Week theme of “Your Voice, Your Choice.”

In this episode, I introduce seven ways that you can find your voice to sustain healthier choices.

These include your beliefs, the concept of natural healthy weight and being able to say no to food when you are not hungry.

And for Women’s Health Week, we are launching a new workshop to help you remove the barriers that have been stopping you from enjoying healthier eating long term. You can find out more about it here: https://eatingforyou.com.au/renew-your-relationship-with-food

Would you love to change your eating habits long-term?

But maybe you believe that it is not possible.

In this episode, I dispel three myths about eating habits:

  1. You need more willpower.
  2. You have to focus on food.
  3. Eating habits cannot be changed.

Most days I am talking with my clients about eating habits and they are relieved that they don’t need more willpower, that they don’t have to give up their favourite foods, and that eating habits can be changed with patience and practice.

In this episode, I answer this question by reviewing the Paleo Diet.

I also provide a checklist for you to use, so you can assess the likelihood of you being able to stick to a certain way of eating.

Understanding what the approach is, whether it provides essential nutrients from food and whether it is backed by scientific research are all important factors.

Following strict rules and guidelines doesn’t work for most people, so that’s why I have created a new online workshop, Renew Your Relationship With Food.

In the workshop, you’ll uncover the true barriers to sustaining healthy eating for good and receive the steps to remove these barriers without a diet or scales.

In this episode, I explain mindful nutrition as the symbiotic relationship between the practice of mindful eating and nutrition.

Simply put, mindful eating helps us to eat healthier, and nutrition helps us to eat more mindfully.

To explain this relationship, I explore how mindful eating and nutrition work together to:

  1. Improve your health,
  2. Support you to eat in tune with your own hunger cycles, and
  3. Help you overcome emotional eating habits.

As vegetables are the unsung nutrition heroes, here is my popular blog post on 5 Tips for Eating 5 Vegetables a Day https://eatingforyou.com.au/5-vegetables-a-day/

Do you really understand what mindful eating is?

So many people that I talk with don’t!

Even my clients take a little while to embrace mindful eating fully.

While the experience of eating—noticing the colours, aromas, textures, and flavours of foods—is part of mindful eating, it is not what it really is about.

The magic happens by being mindful before, during, and after eating. Some might call it magic, and others call it a transformation in their relationship with food.

That’s why I am sharing ten of our mindful eating resources with you today, so you can find out how to change your eating habits for good and stop worrying about your weight.

Do you have 5 minutes in your day to improve your eating habits and health?

Yes, you can start a daily mindfulness practice with just 5 minutes!

And as your mind fitness improves, you can lengthen the practice.

Our mind directs our thoughts, speech and actions.

We have the choice of whether these are helpful or harmful to others and ourselves.

Mindfulness is something that benefits everyone. You do not have to practice a particular religion to practice mindfulness. It is something that we can all learn.

Benefits of mindfulness include:

  • Increased self-awareness of our thoughts and actions
  • Improved focus and concentration
  • Decreased stress arising from negative thoughts and feelings
  • Increased compassion towards oneself and others
  • Increased ability to introduce healthy eating and lifestyle choices
  • Improved health through the reduction of blood pressure

When I first spoke with Bev about mindful eating, she thought, “Now that I am 84, I should be able to eat whatever I want.”

She also wondered if it was really possible for her to change her desire for sweet foods and snacking habits for good.

I am grateful to Bev for joining me in this episode to share her journey with food, which was quite healthy until she was in her 50s.

A sudden illness triggered an overeating habit that she then spent the next 30 odd years trying to stop.

Bev knew another diet wasn’t the answer, yet she realised that she had many reasons to take care of her health.

Bev’s relationship with food started in country NSW as a child, then journeyed to West Papua in Indonesia, and back to Sydney, where I first met her soon after her 80th birthday.

Mindful eating isn’t about ditching the dieting rules and eating freely without thought!

Sorry! This doesn’t work.

So in this episode, I am answering 5 common questions I receive about mindful eating:

  1. If I can’t control my eating on a diet, how can I eat healthily with no rules at all?
  2. I know I overeat, but how do I reconnect with my ‘true appetite’?
  3. How do I stop eating when I know I am already full?
  4. I live alone and often read or watch TV while I am eating—how can I become more mindful of what I eat?
  5. With nutrition and health advice forever changing, how do I know what to eat?

We have also opened up the question box for this episode, so please send through your questions and I will answer them on future episodes.

Did you know that the dieting mindset could be stopping you from enjoying lasting results for your weight and health?

In this episode, for International No Diet Day, May 6th, I help you uncover whether a dieting mindset is blocking your progress and ability to sustain healthier eating.

Not sure what a dieting mindset is?

A dieting mindset refers to the thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions that remain after your dieting experiences have long past.

Repeated failures change our way of thinking about food, exercise, and our body image. Diet culture also reinforces a diet mindset.

The good news is, your mindset can be changed, and I share the alternative approach to eating in this episode too.

What is natural healthy body weight?

Well it isn’t just a number on the scales, and it might not even give you the perfect body mass index (BMI).

BMI and healthy weight charts are just a guide—they are not the absolute correct targets for all of us.

Your natural healthy body weight is the weight you are at when you are eating nourishing food, and mostly eating when you are hungry and stopping before you are full.

Our weight is dependent upon our genetics and other lifestyle choices too, which I address in this episode too.

Do you stress eat?

It’s International Stress Awareness Week (30 October–3 November), so in this episode I am exploring stress and stress eating.

Stress or comfort eating is a habit that can develop in response to a stressful situation, like the sudden death of a loved one, as it was in my case.

Research shows that women are more likely to develop stress eating habits than men. Men are more likely to drink more alcohol or increase their smoking of cigarettes.

Stress eating does not resolve the stress and actually makes life more stressful for women wanting to improve their health and enjoy a healthier body weight.

Health goals cannot be achieved when you have a stress or comfort eating habit.

This episode shares tips on reducing stress and stress-related eating.

  • On average, people will try 126 diets to lose weight.

Eastern medicine has promoted the gut as our foundation for health and well-being for thousands of years.

Western research into the gut microbiota has provided further explanation of the role the gut plays in health and illness.

What’s the DASH diet and why is it important?

As promised I am exploring the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet in this episode as I have received a number of inquiries about it.

So in this episode, I share

  • The reason why this diet was researched.
  • The key nutrients that prevent and promote high blood pressure.
  • The foods that are recommended.

The DASH diet is backed by scientific research and can lower blood pressure within two weeks. And it certainly ranks well in the Best Diet List for 2023.

However, there is no evidence of how long people stick to it, so if following diet rules is a barrier for you, then this is not the long-term answer for your heart health or weight.

You may read my blog post about the DASH diet here: https://eatingforyou.com.au/dietary-approaches-to-stop-hypertension-dash-diet/

In this episode, I am so grateful to be sharing Anne’s journey with food.

Anne started her life below the lowest end of the weight charts and then battled with overweight and emotional eating as an adult.

In our conversation she explains that she could sometimes lose the weight, only to put it on again.

Or face the frustration of restricting food and the scales not moving at all. It all equated to an overwhelming sense of failure.

The mindful eating approach has allowed Anne to understand the why of eating, cultivate self-compassion and most importantly enjoy food again.

I am grateful to Annette for sharing her journey with food and eating.

Annette realised that diets didn’t work for her, and that she had an issue with portion control.

This led her to make a very considered decision over 4 years to have bariatric surgery, something she still says was a difficult decision.

After successfully reducing her weight and maintaining it for some time, she reached out to Eating for You when she became frightened that all of the weight was coming back on.

Through a mindful eating approach, Annette found the missing link for her. She is now building trust in her new way of eating and has finally let go of the fear of failure.
