Husky Talk is back with a guest who will blow your mind! Former UConn Football Sports Information Director Leigh Torbin. Currently he works as a Production Assistant with ESPN as a statistician and spotter during college football games.
Leigh and I could have talked for hours. He has a wealth of knowledge and information of all sports because he pretty much either played or worked with them. Growing up in Framingham, Massachusetts, he was a sports junkie from the start.
He tried different sports and according to him, the one he was the "least bad at" ended up being baseball. As a diehard Red Sox fan, I mentioned that I host a radio show about the Worcester Red Sox. Leigh also works for a Triple A team for the Chicago Cubs and explained the pitch clock to me because he operates it for their games. He knew Worcester traded top prospect Niko Kavadas and went over the situation with me since our team had no idea why they moved him.
I don't want to tell Leigh's story for him, listening to his journey is fascinating. From starting a newspaper in high school to going straight to the SID office when he arrived at UMass and all the stops in between Leigh because he would always throw me a bone after games and send me out to the press for interviews. Kyle Muncy, who I also love, Ed Injaychock and I would yell out his name when he walked by us. He would think something was wrong, but we would ask Kyle if he needed us for interviews, he would laugh as he walked away. Kyle is awesome and we appreciate his support of Husky Talk.'

For the first time ever on Husky Talk, we had a former Olympian as a guest, UConn Track and Field legend Bethany Hart Gerry. Bethany is extremely busy with her career and family; we appreciate the time she gave us.
Bethany grew up in a small town of Grafton, Massachusetts and always played sports. She did not see herself as a great athlete, it was her work ethic that set her apart. Bethany and her twin sister took to Track and Field where they competed at the varsity level as freshmen.
Bethany threw shot put, discuss, and ran the 100-meter dash. She improved tremendously throughout high school, her parents pushed the value of having a great education and her interest was in Physical Therapy. Unfortunately, she was not accepted to Ithaca and Northeastern, but found her calling as a Husky, just in Storrs at UConn.
On a visit, she ran into a track coach purely on accident and mentioned that she competed as well. Bethany started indoor as a walk-on and the rest is history. Although, she wanted to perform more events, Bethany excelled at the Hammer Throw. It was not offered in Massachusetts, but she took to it like a duck to water. UConn kept her as a walk-on, then she progressed to a partial scholarship to finally achieving a full scholarship her last few years.
Talk about someone who EARNED everything she achieved, Bethany always had a desire with a strong work ethic, which is why she pushed herself past her limits in the weight room. She knew in order to move or throw heavy objects; she was going to have to lift and become as powerful as possible to be the best. Taking a day off became almost tragic because she felt like she wasn't doing enough to improve.
Bethany has a legendary career at UConn in the Hammer Throw. She was a Big East Champion, she placed at Nationals and was multi-time All American. Bethany overall is one of the best athletes to come out of UConn ever. She studied athletic training which helped her learn how to be proactive and prevent injuries, as well as heal them.
She trained for the Olympics in the Hammer Throw as well but was introduced to the Bobsled event. She had the speed and strength that made her a perfect fit. Bethany trained for Bobsledding as she was getting her master's degree.
In 2006, it was the first time the Olympics did a female bobsledding competition. She made the team and was featured competing on the largest stage in the world.
One of her proudest moments recently was going back to UConn and seeing a monument put up to honor our athletes who went to the Olympics'. She was there with her family, and it was beautiful.
Bethany was a gifted athlete, her desire, determination, passion and belief that she could outwork anyone is a huge reason she experienced success. These days, she has her own personal training business. She likes to work with moms and help them with their goals. Bethany has done CrossFit, another avenue to train.
Talk about a special journey, Bethany went from a college walk on to Olympian and is the greatest women's Hammer Thrower in UConn history. Congratulations!

Husky Talk is back with a fun loving, bubbly, Maria Shaker who is a former UConn Volleyball star. She has a wonderful personality and an incredible journey that has led her to tremendous success.
Maria played volleyball at an early age and fell in love with the sport. She credits her parents for putting her in every sport in all the different seasons until she found her calling.
Maria went to camps, played on travel teams and was recruited heavily. However, she didn’t take an official visit to UConn until May of her senior year in high school and committed shortly after. Maria knew she wanted to be on the east coast, especially New England, after growing up in Cleveland, Ohio.
She was on the court as a freshman and played a significant role in the Volleyball team winning the Big East championship in 1998. Maria started the rest of the way as a center, who is like the quarterback in volleyball. She has amazing leadership, setting up plays, making sure the girls were in the right position and was voted to the All Big East team .
Maria is extremely intelligent and wanted to get into medicine. She majored in Molecular Biology and received her masters at Case Western University before going to medical school at Wright State. She has been an OBGYN and Gynecologist for the last 10 years . Maria also is in charge of training the residents, which isn’t surprising because she still has strong leadership qualities.
Maria was a pleasure to interview and I plan on meeting her on October 5th when the 1998 Volleyball team is honored and UConn Football plays home against Temple

One of the coolest, most interesting guests I have ever had on Husky Talk, Mr. Eric Bechtal. A man who is living an incredible life after being a free safety for UConn football in the late 80's.

Coach Schuman pulls out a Dave Brown reference with the NY Giants, one of my favorite QBs growing up, in reference to Daniel Jones. Frank and Schuman believe Tua not being dynamic as a runner will keep them from taking the next step.
We look at the AFC East and give insight into who will win the division. Dave thinks with a healthy, motivated Aaron Rogers on the field, the Jets will come out on top. Frank does not see Buffalo improving because they lost so much and did not gain enough in the draft.

We have former UConn Football standout Jamar Wilkens as a guest on Husky Talk. Jamar came in at a challenging time, from the best season in UConn Football history, to taking on a leadership role, sacrificing for the good of the team, and still dominating after switching positions.
Originally from New Jersey, he played Tight End and Linebacker in high school. His amazing athleticism and exceptional talent gave him several college options. Unfortunately, his school did not fill out the proper NCAA Clearinghouse paperwork, UConn wanted him and kept a scholarship open.
Jamar was a true student of the game and played Middle Linebacker, which is the Quarterback of the defense. In 1998 and 1999 he was an outstanding player, a tackling machine. He put in many hours of film study.
In 2000, Jamar showed us all the team came first, as he was moved to Defensive End. He recognized the young group of Defensive linemen and took on a leadership role, determined to make them better. He taught the guys how to watch film, who to key, and most importantly the work ethic it took to have success.
He was named team Defensive MVP, led the team in sacks, tackles for losses, and had the most tackles out of any of members of the D-Line.
One of his proudest moments was watching in 2002-2003, his young bucks develop into a dominant force. Uyi Osunde, Greg Smoot, Sean Mulchay, Tyler King, Hakeem Kashama, all became starters, contributors, reliable, dependable, and hard workers. The team didn't win as many games in 2000 but he understood his role to get the next group ready to play and show what the UConn way was all about.
These days Jamar has a great career and loves coaching his two young boys. Jamar bleeds blue, he has been a tremendous supporter of this podcast and it was a blast having him on, hearing some classic stories. Love you JOMAR:)

Chris has appeared on television networks like Fox News and ESPN working to spread awareness of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, also known as CTE. He was a pioneer behind discovering the disease and on the frontline of studying it to work at finding treatments for those suffering with this debilitating condition.
Laban Marsh and Licensed Mental Health Therapist Kelly Virkler Greene joined the show to talk with Chris about what the Foundation has to offer. Kelly shared her experiences with me over the last year which have shown many symptoms of CTE and the onset of it came extremely fast.
Laban discussed his own struggles and concern for how he will be in the future. He already donated his brain and is always proactive.
Chris explained there is hope for us and people who come to the Foundation where they will do an evaluation for free. Then they can tell you which of the 4 stages of CTE you are at. There are several treatment options, and they will work to find a doctor in your a rea to battle this disease.

Our guest is UConn Defensive Back Roy Hopkins from my neck of the woods in Rochester, NY. He was an outstanding athlete who was the first player in UConn Football history to start a game in 5 years.
Carl "Shank" Bond did a run in and it was cool listening to them reminisce. Stories about competing during one on ones as Carl was a receiver and Roy matched up against him in practice. Both guys had speed to go with incredible talent, which was a big reason why Roy became a starter by the 4th game his freshman year.
Roy discussed the toughest receivers he covered during his career being Andre Davis from Virginia Tech and Andre Johnson at Miami. I remember Roy making Superman like plays when he matched up with Andre Johnson who will be in the NFL Hall of Fame.
Shank and Roy both coach high school football now, doing a great job preparing the next group of kids to compete in college. We also shared a few hilarious stories about when Roy and I would carpool to UConn together. He didn't have a license at the time but definitely would have drove better than me! Shank and Roy = High Entertainment value!

For the first time ever, our guest on Husky Talk is former UConn legendary soccer player Luis Arauz. Voted All Conference for the Big East and more impressive was being an All American his senior year.
His story is truly astounding, born in Bolivia, he was accepted into one of the best soccer academies in the world at 3 years old. Luis entire family had success, starting with his father who played professionally, and his brothers also had great careers.
After attending St. Benedict prep school in New Jersey, Luis went to community college to learn the English language and won a National Championship as he was a phenomenal goal scorer on offense.
Luis played two outstanding seasons at UConn, leading them to the Final Four after decades of losing.
He is married with two kids, living in Washington DC where he teaches Spanish and coaches girls soccer. His wife received her PHD from Northwestern and is an activist for the environment.
Luis is one of a kind and has built an amazing life, he wanted to teach so he would have more time to spend with his kids. A dedicated father with a family, thank you for being a guest on Husky Talk.

This was a WILD episode of Husky Talk that was absolutely hilarious. We have Murray "The Cat" Clayton, Carl "Shank" Bond, and Shane Stafford on as guests. Madness ensued early as Murray The Cat shared his first experiences in Storrs.
Shane and Carl should have their own reality show together. Great story tellers but when it comes to talking football, we get to witness their passion and love for the game explode. Memories of specific plays, details from 25 years ago was special to witness and be part of. Shane describing how he would give Carl a look and he knew what route to run, along with understanding Shane was coming to him.
The Cat was a speedster who was part of a separate personnel grouping that took advantage of his blazing speed and quickness. No matter the surface he was running on, Murray was blazing by everyone.
It was an incredible moment for me doing an episode with legends like Shane Stafford and Carl Bond who are still in the record books for UConn football today. Also to learn the story of Murray "The Cat" Clayton was icing on the cake!

Husky Talk checks in with former UConn Football kicker Dave DeArmas as he recovers from major surgery. Last month, he went under the knife for a procedure on his heart that had 3 arteries with a 98 percent blockage.
They were lucky to catch the problem early and he is already back in the office 18 days after surgery. Dave will soon be on the field when training camp begins.
We are happy for Dave and his family and it was great to hear that everything went well. We wish him the best and I personally think he may be a cyborg to recover so fast and is already planning out practices!

We were extremely lucky to have Alfred Fincher on the show, a legendary Linebacker for UConn Football. He came in and hit the ground running as a 4-year starter who is in the top 5 for tackles made a single game, as well as tackles for a career.
Instantly, he drove me nuts because he was loud, knocked me around, was always happy, and pushed the entire team to be better. Al was a difference maker, playing with passion, confidence, an incredible work ethic, and desire to be the best.
He took a leadership role on early in his career and helped bring UConn football to the next level. Winning the Motor City Bowl, playing in the Senior Bowl, attending the combine with QB Dan Orlovsky.
Alfred Fincher was truly a difference maker, along with Dan Orlovsky, both were the first draft picks for the NFL in the Randy Edsall era.
He was selected in the 3rd round by the New Orleans Saints and talks about his experience in the NFL. The major differences from transitioning from college to the pros.
We had a great interview, a nicer guy he couldn't be, and Al joined on with the Husky Investment group which we hope to collaborate with in the future. Thank you Al!

Sean, with his wonderful family met up with me to watch the Worcester Red Sox over the weekend. His wife and two children had an outstanding time attending their first baseball game ever. Sean has been an amazing supporter of Husky Talk and always makes time to give feedback or provide advice. Truly a special person who has helped in many ways.
His daughter noticed that I said the cotton candy looked tasty. Minutes later she asked her dad for one and gave it to me! Sean's son Ben became a fan of The Mustache Man Micky Gasper, my favorite player, and we cheered him on after Mickey hit a two run Home Run that iced the game for the WOOSOX.

Husky Talk is back with a former teammate I competed against in practice every day for 3 years, Coach Nicolas "Hakeem" Kashama. For starters, I always thought his name was Hakeem and 23 years later, he kindly told me it was his nickname. Better late than never I guess? Kashama loved basketball and Hakeem stuck because he played like NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon.
College Football is different because there are 110 guys on the roster, and you don't always have an opportunity to get to know even close to everyone on the team. Talk about a special story, Nicolas Kashama's path to UConn was sincerely fascinating.
A description from me will fall short, listen to this episode. Born in the Congo, Hakeem's father wanted more for his family and sensed turmoil within the country. He left for Canada, worked for a year saving money, and moved the family to Toronto.
Kashama had friends but enjoyed playing with his brothers the most. What's amazing is that he never played American Football until being a sophomore in high school, and he struggled as a Defensive End. At the time, they moved to Montreal and Nicolas spoke primarily French.
He began taking classes to learn English in school. Hakeem watched tapes on all the best pass rushers of the era, Reggie White, Bruce Smith, Lawrence Taylor and would practice moves with his brothers in the back yard. UConn saw him at a Canadian summer showcase camp and offered a scholarship, he committed after his visit.
Coming to Connecticut in January, Kashama made an impact immediately during spring practice. Athletic, extremely talented, Hakeem is one of the rare college football players to start all 4 years. Earning accolades of All Conference and All ECAC as a DE. Injuries kept him from having a long professional career, but he was a force on a tough defensive line at UConn.
Nicolas was married shortly after college and coming up on 20 years of marriage. He teaches and coaches high school football in Georgia, one of the top gridiron states in the country.
Kashama has 4 kids, 2 who play for him now and the older one is being recruited by division 1 schools as a Strong Safety. Loved catching up with Nicolas, thrilled to see him having the big family he wanted and happy that he is a leader, mentor, someone his players look up to. Enjoy!

Gino has a fascinating story, growing up in Florida, he was a dominate Tight End and could catch the ball. Recruited by UConn, he committed, and when you come from Florida, weather is certainly a shock.
Gino was converted into a defensive lineman because of his outstanding athleticism. It was not the easiest transition, but he put the work in, learned from watching film, and developed into a good player, as well as a talented pass rusher.
More importantly, after graduating, Gino was involved in politics in Florida. He saw a system that was broken and instead of complaining, he did something about it. For 20 years, Gino worked in Broward County as the Director of Voter Education.
Too many people did not understand how elections worked or how to even register to vote not knowing what was needed. Gino spent time talking with groups to make sure they knew what needed to be done so they could vote.
These days, Gino is launching an App called Best Candidate. An amazing idea that should change the system for everyone. It's a Bipartisan phone App that allows candidates to register and talk about the issues. Rules, check and balances are in place to prevent any mudslinging. Candidates share their plans, views on specific issues, there is no agenda here, whether you lean left or right, Best Candidate makes sure all proper information is received by voters.
I think the best part is Gino wants to educate people because so many don't know how to vote or register to vote. Best Candidate handles the process of all that, along with telling them who is running for what position in their area. Best Candidate allows people to get the information they need on who is running, their views on issues, plans to make changes if elected, and it's completely Bipartisan.
Gino does not have an agenda to push, he want to make sure people know how to register, can find locations to vote, and truly since about making a difference. Best Candidate will take away all the distractions we see from whoever is running and allow them to speak about the issues and how they will make changes. Voters are learning about candidates, while candidates present themselves in a Bipartisan way to ensure fairness.
Gino was really outstanding to talk with because he is ambitious and proactive. He saw a problem with the election process, instead of complaining, he spent 20 years helping others by teaching them about elections.
Now, he created Best Candidate, which will launch August 20th and will be available in several counties in Florida. I believe this is going to blow up and eventually be used nationally. We live in the best country in the world, but the system is broken when people don't know how to register to vote and don't have information that counts on each candidate.

Our guest is former UConn Linebacker David Schuman. He shares his amazing journey to UConn and stories from his playing days. After his time in Storrs, he went on to having tremendous success building his own business from the ground up.
David grew up in New Jersey, one of the best states for high school football in the country. Making his mark as a Tailback, at 6'0 220 pounds, he was a complete runner with power and speed. He attended a small school where he played both ways and also did extremely well academically.
Recruited by the Patriot League, Yankee conference, along with Ivy League universities like Princeton and Harvard, David knew at an early age he wanted to compete at the highest level of Division 1 football.
Recruited by coach Tom Jackson, he committed after his visit and was slated to play fullback. After being redshirted, when Skip Holtz came on as head coach, David was moved to linebacker. He was a hard hitter and credits learning the defense easily because of defensive coordinator Nick Rapone.
We talk about his success at UConn happening because he was a tough, hard nosed, physical player. He also was versatile enough to play all linebacker positions. When the defense would go into a dime package, he would stay on the field because of his coverage skills, anytime a swing pass was thrown to an RB, David would blow him up.
He shares memories from his best performances, games where he was a tackling machine, recovered fumbles and had interceptions. David was a true throwback Linebacker who loved hitting.
After graduation, David was a true pioneer starting a business training kids and running high school showcase football camps all over the country. At the time, nobody was doing this, many colleges copied from him running their own camps to evaluate talent.
David worked with several Heisman trophy winners, including Johnny Manziel, Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry. He also spent time training Kyler Murray and Trevor Lawrence.
Dave is a football guru who built and cultivated relationships with college coaches everywhere. These days his Schuman enterprises works with top athletes and helps them navigate the recruiting process. Coaches contact him to find out his evaluations on certain players.

All new episode with a special guest I have been trying to get on for months, the GOAT himself, one of the top two Quarterbacks in UConn history, Shane Stafford. He shares his story, and it is captivating.
Shane started playing football at 8 years old and even then he had a sharp mind for the game. One of his earliest memories was calling an audible and running a 59-yard QB sneak.
He talks about his career at every level mirroring itself. In high school, he played on a team that ran the ball primarily and the starter was not getting it done. Shane was told to go in and never came out. As a junior and senior, he was a top talent, but was recruited later in the process. Once he visited UConn, the rest is history, he committed.
We go over his career in Storrs, leading the best team in UConn history in 1998 and Shane still having some of the best passing statistics in UConn history.
He went on to have a successful professional career playing in the Arena league for 8 years with the Tampa Bay Storm and Orlando Predator's. Also, he was signed by the Patriots and spent a season in NFL Europe with the Scottish Claymores, winning a World Bowl. He split time while in the last 4 games throwing 8 TDs to 1 INT.
Shane has also been a coach in high school and Arena league. With such a spectacular mind for the game, we expect him back on the sidelines soon.

All new Husky Talk with former UConn Womens basketball player Britt Hunter. She talks about her unique journey that led her to UConn and what she has been doing since graduating. Britt was always kind and treated me well. She is one of the smartest guests I've had on, it was a pleasure spending time with her.
Growing up, she was extremely sheltered because her mother worked all the time. She didn't love basketball, but recognized her athleticism and talent was her best chance to attend college on a scholarship.
She admitted being an introvert, having some insecurities and not being interested in partying in high school. She played on the best team in OH IO, I got to learn that yesterday! Taking official visits to schools like Duke, Harvard, Texas and UConn, being ranked the #1 player in the country, she was recruited by everyone.
After a difficult year at Duke, she suffered a major injury which she spent a year recovering from. Between that and her depression, she called UConn on her own and made the decision to transfer.
It was a challanging transition because she was limited and could not play like she wanted to. Britt was known for her tough defense, blocking shots, rebounding, loved doing all the dirty work. She loves her teammates and is close with them to this day
After graduation, she has done a little bit of everything. From coaching at Temple, being a Dean of Students, teaching, she spent a lot of time in education. She also got her Master's degree and MBA.
Britt currently works for Microsoft, and she also does speaking engagements at universities to share her story to athletes. Britt always gives back and does a lot of charity work because she had people who helped, believed in her. She always will pay it forward. A special Husky Talk where we honor and pay tribute to former teammate Adam Coles. He was a magnetic, charismatic, special person who we all love and miss.
Sadly, we lost Adam in 2019 and several of his close friends came on the show to talk about how they think of him every day. Adam was an incredible talent from the start of his UConn career becoming a freshman All American and he never looked back, still holding records to this day.

A new episode of Husky Talk, coming all the way from North Dakota, former UConn football defensive back Phil Hunt. Husky Talk continues to grow, and we are having outstanding guests each week. Phil shared his journey, along with breaking news at the end of the episode that Husky fans will be thrilled to hear.
Phil is from New Jersey and started playing football a little bit later than most kids. He was a dynamic athlete with incredible speed and a state champion running track in the 110 hurdles. Phil made a decision in 8th grade that he wanted to play division 1 college football on a scholarship and put the work in to make that dream come true.
He played varsity football in high school during his junior and senior seasons. Going both ways, he was a tailback on offense and an outside linebacker on defense. He started one game at corner because of his speed and showed his athleticism, as well as his versatility.
Being recruited by Delaware, Vanderbilt, West Virginia and the military academies, UConn hiring Skip Holtz as head coach was a big factor in his decision to attend UConn. Also, receiving a full scholarship showed his importance to the future of UConn football.
Phil had 3 different position coaches in 5 years which makes things difficult having to prove yourself each time a new guy comes in. He was a scholar athlete and part of the 1998 team regarded the best in UConn history winning 10 games, beating the eventual national champions UMass twice and winning the first play-off game ever against Hampton. Phil was voted a captain by his teammates for his dedication, hard work, and leadership.
After his playing career was over, he trained for the NFL but went undrafted. Phil focused on his academics earning a master's degree while working in the athletic department.
Athletic Director Lew Perkins surrounded himself with attorneys for advice and they talked with Phil about going to law school which he ended up doing after his time at UConn.
Working for the NCAA and other jobs including his current position at North Dakota State, Phil is married with young children now. His 7-year-old is a track star and competing currently against the top talent in the country.
At the conclusion of our show, Phil reveals a new position he accepted and let's just say he is coming back to the east coast. It was a pleasure talking to Phil and learning his story. Such a nice guy who was thoughtful enough to thank and offer me important advice.

We are moving up in land of Husky Talk with our first former UConn Baseball player joining as a guest. Jason Grabowski was nice enough to come on the show and had an outstanding career, also my first opportunity to interview a baseball player!
Grabowski graduated from The Morgan School in Clinton, Connecticut and was drafted by the Yankees in the 17th round of the 1994 draft out of high school. Jason was a huge fan of the team but at 175 pounds, he did not think it was in his best interests to sign. Instead, to play college baseball at UConn for legendary Coach Andy Baylock.
In 1995 and 1996, Grabowski played summer baseball with the Chatham A's of the Cape Cod League. Coincidently, Freddie Prinze Jr was there shooting the movie Summer Catch at the time. A cool experience and players were extras. Jason describes himself as versatile with many skills but a master of none. Able to play catcher, shortstop and in the outfield, he was then drafted by the Texas Rangers in the second round of the 1997 MLB Draft.
Jason spent time in the minors from Single A to Triple A developing. In the Major League he was also in Seattle, LA where one of his fondest memories was hitting a home run off Cubs ace Kerry Wood.
He played in Japan, sharing stories of the culture differences and having an interpreter before injuries forced him to retire in 2007 with Tampa Bay.
Jason is a great guy, humble, and went very far in his career. He shared some cool stories and we definitely will have him on our Worcester Red Sox show.

Its never easy but it's his baby and he has been very successful.

Nicki excelled as a three-sport athlete in high school doing field hockey, indoor track and softball. Attending camp at UConn, along with her official visit secured her to commit and become a Husky. She does believe softball was her best sport and also was a two-time state champion in the Shotput for Indoor track.
At UConn, she redshirted before becoming at 3-year starter even after switching positions for coach Nancy. Her teams made it to the Final 4 as a junior and senior. Nicki was an outstanding player and learned by watching the upperclassmen.
We talk about her several careers out of college before COVID hitting and starting Nicki Unplugged. It originated on Tic Tok and Nicki uses Instagram because it offers many features. Being a single mom after a recent divorce, she is an incredible content creator. Nicki is devoted to her children; they play sports and do well in school.
I give Nicki all the credit in the world, betting on herself, becoming a content creator, growing her audience, building a brand and being extremely successful. I said she has amazing talent, and her fans will continue coming back. Nicki will grow new followers because of her hilarious personality and ability to entertain. Mr. Wells returns as we were privileged with interviewing UConn legendary Wide Receiver Carl "Shank" Bond. Carl had a spectacular career at UConn before moving on to being a force in the Arena League.
Carl is from New Haven and attended Hamden Hall in high school. A 3 sport athlete, he was a dominate baseball player batting .500 and was a great outfielder. His coaches steered him towards football because it was his best chance to earn a scholarship.
Recruited by big programs, Carl had to certain classes to qualify because they were required. It wasn't enough to be at an elite academic private school like Hamden, second semester senior year he finished the classes and was frustrated being told to attend a different prep school for a Post Grad year.
Skip Holtz took Carl as a preferred walk-on, and the rest is history. Redshirted with QB Shane Stafford, they developed together and became a nightmare for defenses. The team truly took off by staying all summer to train and party on campus. When at the time, players did not stay, UConn felt they had an opportunity to be special which came true.
A sensational career, 4 year starter, earned a scholarship, got better by watching NFL tapes of Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne, Carl still holds many records at UConn. He was a difference maker and became a technician at route running.
He went on to play 7 years in the Arena League and never stopped getting better. Coaching for 20 years, he knows how to build trust with his players and has many success stories. Working in a middle school he teaches students in need, along with ones who excel.
His 11-year-old son played football for the first time and his daughter is competing in the league championship in two events for track. Carl always gives back, a team needs a coach, he will help, but he sounds extremely proud of his kids. He wants to focus on being a parent, a devoted father who never pushed his children into sports, he hopes he can enjoy watching from the stands more.

Tyler was requested by many people but with his busy schedule we were not able to schedule him. Today, we got him and he is definitely one of a kind.Tyler King comes from a football family with father Steve a Patriots legend. He played in high school but wanted to improve and have a chance to play sooner, so Tyler did a PG year at Avon Old Farms.
Committed to University of New Hampshire, Tyler changed course because coach Randy Edsall never gave up on recruiting him and which is why he decommitted to attend UConn.
Redshirting was a difficult experience and Tyler shares some funny stories, one which includes me when I had a broken wrist.
A 4-year starter on defense, Tyler played on a talented defensive line. He was named 1st team All Independent, with impressive stats of double-digit Tackles for Losses and Sacks.
In 2004, despite a gruesome ankle injury, Tyler returned to play in UConn's first ever bowl against Toledo. What a comeback story, he was named Defensive Player of the Game with TFLS, forced fumble and a sack.
Tyler had a whirlwind pro career. He spent 2 years on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad, several weeks with the San Diego Chargers practice squad before his final stint attending training camp with Jacksonville. He also played 2 years in NFL Europe along, with a season in the Arena League.
Tyler was always a high motor guy who played hard thanks to Coach Hank Hughes. He transitioned into MMA where he had a successful career fighting for many New England promotions and won a few Heavyweight Championships, also was on UFC's Reality Show the Ultimate Fighter
Currently, he has one fight scheduled for July 20th, but also started his own business with a friend. They run an agency and train fighters interested in MMA. Tyler has some outstanding prospects who he believes will make it big if they continue to develop.
A great friend who I hope to see this summer on the lake, it was exciting catching up with Tyler King. He is one of a kind and pure gold for entertainment. Definitely an episode you don't want to miss!

Nothing I write will do Steve Darby and Corey Derfuss justice. Two hardworking, tough guys who were great leaders. I shared a story about having a difficult time as a freshman when Corey and Jamie Harper came to my dorm room to take me out. They wanted to make sure I was okay and went out of their way to let me know I was part of the family. Steve had the pleasure of playing next to me his senior year and being a huge influence, despite the hundreds of times I stepped on his feet. All I need to say is listen to the show and it will speak for itself.

Having two Octogenarian's who are more active and have 10X the energy that I do, I was more excited listening to them interact than actually hosting. Coach B shares his history from New Britian, attending Central Connecticut State, being a graduate assistant at Michigan State before joining a legendary UConn football staff in the 1960's. Lou Holtz, Sam Rutigliano were coaching, along with others who went to the NFL, under athletic director JO Christian.
Coach B played several minor league seasons, along with the Cape Cod league and was an outstanding baseball talent. He had opportunities to go to the NFL, but staying at UConn, he truly loved coaching football and baseball at the Division 1 level, along with all the players he had through the years.
Mr. Wells and Coach B talk about the dynamic involved coaching two sports. I loved hearing the names Coach B brought up, I had no idea who they were, but Mr. Wells certainly did.
Coach B tells us how he started back working in football in Alumni affairs and community relations. He tracked down alums and built an impressive program. Coach B puts out newsletters to keep us informed and at 86 years young, still throws batting practice daily. Oh, and he won a division 3 National Championship 2 years ago at Eastern Connecticut State.

Bailey and Danny are here to answer all your questions, we tried to get to as many as we could. From why dogs eat their own poop to the issues that may come from adopting the runt of the litter, it was very educational
Bailey also discussed her goals for the summer in promoting their grooming service. Danny said that if you book daycare on the app and it says they are full, please call the shop, they will try to take whoever needs them.
She and Danny mentioned how outstanding their staff has become. They are a family, work hard, and Danny has the group organized so well that each day runs smoothly. Bailey is proud of all her staff and did not want to name names as to who has stood out. Everyone does, she did mention Brooklyn and Lexi helping in different roles which makes life easier.
It was a disappointment that they did not receive as many kid from the Animal Science program at Boces this year. Bailey talks about Miss Daly and the profound impact the program had on her life. She stresses that it's not just sitting in a class all day. They take kids on location to teach and give them experience. For anyone wanting to learn about animals, the process of becoming a vet or even how you can contribute at shelters, it's fun and educational.

New episode of Huskytalk tonight with two amazing former teammates Geoff Heyl and Matt Nuzie. We had a blast, and the guys were happy I referred to them as football players.
Geoff attended the same high school as Laban A. Marsh and was recruited by UConn Football after a coach watched tape on Laban. Geoff was redshirted but did get to be part of the legendary 1998 playoff team. He was offered a full scholarship and not given much time to decide, but very happy he came to Storrs.
Matt and I were only together for a season, it was awesome getting to know him better. Hearing his story, despite attending Trumball, CT in high school, UConn was not on his radar as he planned to attend New Hampshire before receiving an unexpected scholarship offer.
Both share funny stories and the bond between kickers. Being in competition, along with supporting each other for success. Geoff remembers his biggest kick was a game winner to beat Akron in 2000. Matt remembers going on an unbelievable hot streak of making 10 field goals in a row. Also being part of the transition into the Big East along with UConn's first bowl win against Toledo.
I apologize for not giving a longer description. I was thrown off our interview at the end unexpectedly and completely went blank. Sometimes you never see a train coming. I am rarely speechless and will do better. It was a great show and taught me a lot about what kickers go through. Thank both Matt and Geoff for allowing me to tell their stories.
Former UConn star Defensive Back and teammate Laban Marsh is our guest for Husky Talk. An episode that turned into a learning experience for me, Laban truly stole the show.From Pennsylvania, he was a dynamic athlete from an early age. Running track and also competing as a pole vaulter, he achieved many accolades. A mentor in his life met with Laban and his parents to explain while he was great at track, his best opportunity to receive a college scholarship was in football.Laban said there is no secret to success, it's all about hard work, believing in yourself, and having unshakeable confidence. He started to live in the weight room in 8th grade and pushed himself to the limit. Laban developed into a special athlete having a combination on impressive strength for his size, with lightning speed, he had a tremendous high school career. Unfortunately, he suffered multiple concussions, 5 that were diagnosed, and it easily could have been more. Skip Holtz won Laban over and he committed to UConn. He was a true competitor and loved the comradery in the locker room with his teammates. Avid podcast fan Nicky "the Fish" Cannon was Labans roommate and lifeline as he became responsible to be a human alarm clock. Laban is humble, grateful for the relationships him made on those memorable teams.Laban had a promising career at UConn. He was a playmaker on defense and instrumental to that crew which led to the 1998 team, considered one of the best in the history of the program. A 10-win season for the first time ever, defeating the eventual national champions twice in the regular season, along with winning the first and only playoff game against Hampton in school history. Unfortunately, Skip Holtz took a job at South Carolina and the wheels fell off. Laban suffered a career ending concussion against Kentucky in 1999, his 8th. When meeting with new coach Randy Edsall, a defining moment occurred which Laban discusses in detail about his work ethic. This is when he stood up for himself and left the program. He suffered feeling he let the team down and he fought back from what could have led into a bad situation. Laban went on to star in track, winning induvial Big East championships at the Carrier Dome in Syracuse. Now he runs a family Real Estate business in Erie, PA which has been a huge success. I have not talked to Laban in 25 years, but I could feel his energy all the way in NY. Laban always has a positive attitude, a smile on his face, and desire, passion in anything he does. Married with 4 kids, Laban coaches track and stresses the importance of philanthropy, giving back. You will never be successful without giving back and too many people want to wait to have that success before contributing.I was moved by Labans journey. He knows that he doesn't know it all, despite being one of the smartest people I've ever met. He has a business coach, always striving to learn, always looking for ways to improve. It was an experience having him on, and we will definitely hear from Laban again.

Probably the most nervous I have ever been before an interview because I am a dumb guy who received a golden opportunity to speak with one of the smartest men in his field. Not only in developing athletes but spending years learning and creating a system that can work for anyone who wants to improve health, wellness, truly see the height of their potential and how great they can be.
Dr. Morris could not have been a kinder man. Having a smile on his face, along with a positive attitude, sharing what a pleasure it has been to watch athletes he's worked with accomplish goals they never saw possible, along with going on to success competing in college or professionally.
He sincerely wants to help people play better on the field, present better in the board room and live a pain free, better quality of life. You meet very few people in this world who give back, are unselfish, insecure, and care about others. Refreshing and I hope to interview him again
Josh Mullen of Empire Orthopedic Labs is our guest on a fun show. A year ago, I lost my foot from a diabetic infection. I was stupid and depressed, not taking care of myself before going into septic shock. Nothing could be done because the sepsis had spread, and the only chance to save my life was by amputation.
Josh grew up in Rome and was born an amputee. He remembers receiving his first prosthetic rubber hand at 4 years old. However, nothing slowed him down, if anything it made him work harder. Josh loved to golf and played all over at many courses. In school, his academics were excellent as he already knew what would come next.
Only 45 minutes away, Josh attended Hartwick College. He remembers the long walks, laboring up the hills to get to class. He stayed together with his high school sweetheart who attended Ithaca College. It wasn't perfect, a few bumps in the road along the way, none of it mattered as they stayed together. Josh spent plenty of time visiting her in college.
What I found most interesting is Josh knew he wanted to work in orthopedics and prosthetics. It had been a huge interest for him not only because he was an amputee, but he knew he wanted to help people. After an internship at Empire Orthopedics Labs, his mentor, who was also the owner, advised him to learn Orthopedics first and he dove right in. After completing it, Josh went into Prosthetics which became his passion. He spent time working at the VA with army veterans and grew to find happiness in making a tremendous difference in their lives.
After graduating college, working in the VA, a golden opportunity presented itself when Josh knew his mentor at Empire was retiring. He put in an offer to buy the company. At 32 years old, Josh became the owner of Empire, and he did admit to being nervous running a business at a very young age.
However, it turned into a family business, he hired his mother, then his wife came on, there have been a few techs along the way and that is the extent. Anyone who comes in will see Josh, he is hands on and sticks with you throughout the entire process. Other companies use 3D imaging on limbs to start. Josh keeps it old school, he does it by taking a cast of your limb which makes the prosthetic fit better and last longer. His only frustration is dealing with the insurance companies, otherwise Josh loves his clients and how rewarding it is to truly give them their life back.
For my first prosthetic, I needed approval from 3 doctors, insurance notes written perfectly. It took 6 weeks before I received it. After being referred to Josh, he completed a new one for me in under a month. Then I took it home to test out and we made sure my new leg was a perfect fit.
Lighter, easier to put on and off, Josh got me back on my feet. With a wife and 3 kids, one in college, another on the way this year, Josh is a devoted father and family man. I am grateful for everything he has done for me along with the kindness, compassion, and empathy shown. Our newest edition of Husky Talk on the podcast with guests Courtney Williams and Dennis Callaghan who were both fierce competitors on the offensive line.
Starting with Courtney, originally a walk on and came to UConn after graduation for summer school which was a requirement for admission. He ended up joining the team and learning the game as a scout team player.
Dennis was from Michigan and UConn was not even on his radar. He expected to attend a MAC school before he was won over by the Huskies and made his way to Storrs.
Both have unique journeys that are incredible. Courtney was undersized while Offensive Line coach Hudson took a liking to his work ethic, foot speed, and he became known as the Jedi for his development.
Dennis traveled as a freshman because only 3 offensive linemen were part of that class and one ended up quitting. This was 1994 and Skip Holtz in his first year at UConn wanted to change the culture.
The group really became a family and bonded because they did redshirt together. Future classes included Corey Derfuss, Mike Sasson, Jamie Harper, Mark Campoli, Steve Darby and Mike Burton.
Dennis and Courtney credit the success of the 1998 season to an attitude that was built over the summer before the season. Strength coach Mike Golden put the group to work, instilled toughness, along with a mentality that nobody could stop them.
A huge reason I went to UConn and committed early was because I saw how dominant they were up front. Dennis being a captain said he was not a rah rah type of leader, he led by example because he was going to knock you on your ass one way or another.
Talent like QB Shane Stafford, Recolon Jumpp with Barry Chandler, along with a young Taber Small in the backfield. John Fitzsimmons, Tory Taylor, Steven O'Conner some of the wide receivers in the country.
Courtney and Dennis said it best, they were versatile and could beat you however you wanted. Load up the box to stop RC Jumpp and Barry Chandler, please have at it. The Pup, Shane Stafford was going to light it up throwing to Fitz, Tory, Okie, Wendall McDuffie...it didn't matter, Shane was going to shred you if that box was loaded.
Ok, you want to spread out and cover the pass, be my guest. You had fullbacks that played with reckless abandon in Chad Martin RIP... or Fezzie coming downhill on iso or power to make you feel every pound of his 260. Dennis, Courtney, Harper, Burton, Sasson, Campoli, Derfuss, Darby, knocking people around and creating holes. Two-star RBs who ran HARD in RC and Barry Chandler with a touch a Taber Small to having a powerful running attack. Also being smart in the passing game picking up blitzes. A mentality created by new offensive line coach Dave DeGuglielmo or coach Guge as he was referred to.
Not to take away anything from the defense. Ron Gamble,, Chad Cook, Ronnel Jumpp, Chad Smith, Jeff Delucia, they all were a big piece to the puzzle of the 1998 UConn Football team.
Courtney and Dennis tell it perfect; they beat the eventual National Champions UMass....TWICE and I attended both games, which made me decide to commit to UConn early. Courtney and Dennis were a little nervous coming in, but they loosened up and told some amazing stories. Thank you for coming on the podcast.

I was blown away this week when Connecticut and UConn legend Maria Conlon, CLF®agreed to be a guest on the most popular sports show in Worcester with the largest audience, MONEYLINE. Creating original content that is local and addresses issues daily not being covered by the T&G or other stations in the city.Maria was a special talent early on She is the pride and joy of Derby, Connecticut, however, her parents put her in Seymour public schools hoping for the best. In the early to mid 90's there were not a lot of girls playing sports and from 4th to 8th grade, Maria played on the boys' team. From there, she started playing against girls on the varsity squad in 9th grade which led to 2 state championships. Her teams were not as talented junior and senior year. Maria still was the best player on the court, she was a facilitator getting her teammates involved and she was a sniper as a shooter. Coming to UConn as the State player of the year was a unique transition. Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Shea Ralph, Asjha Jones, Tamicka Williams-Jeter, Swin Cash, you have the Olympic National team as competition. Maria said she could have gone to Penn State and put-up bigger numbers but winning was most important. Maria laughed when I said she had quickness, I was referring to her release of her shot, it was as fast as lightning. Hard working, toughness, grit, a fighter who fought for every second she played, she earned her time on the court. Averaging 5 to7 points a game, 3 assists, shot very good from 3-point range at 38% and Maria was tenacious on defense. We touch on the UConn vs Duke game in 2003 which was #1 vs #2 at the time. Great friend and avid podcast listener Brian Basloe first off, was shocked we were going to drive 655 miles to Duke, secondly shocked we wanted to attend a girls basketball game and third, he promised us not to get him in trouble. To sit in the Duke Student section, all you had to provide was a Duke student ID, which Brian rounded up for us. We had UConn gear underneath our clothes. I had Diana's practice jersey, Ed has Ashley Valleys on, and we picked up our friend Dan Circelli who had Sue Birds jersey on. The game starts, we reveal ourselves to be UConn fans sitting with the Cameron Crazies, and it was wild. UConn was up by 20 at halftime and I was heckling Duke fans saying. "I drove 600 miles for a blowout" while Ed was more conventional calling them all NERDS. I mean, if an hour before the game you are handing out sheets of paper with taunts on them for practice, it is nerdy.An entertaining show with a guest I love, am proud of, and admire. She works for a wealth management firm, owns a CrossFit gym. owns a restaurant. Won a National Title at Southern Connecticut State. Former teammate and friend Jeff Larson joins the podcast after a mishap last week deleted his episode. Being that the sound engineer is myself, now it makes sense that a mistake was made.Jeff loved football and from an early age had a work ethic like none other. He would do anything asked of him and wanted to contribute as much as possible. He enlisted in the Army, and I remember freshmen year, he was in amazing shape compared to the rest of the group.Jeff played a few games as a freshman, on special teams or offense, defense, holding a clipboard, he did it all. Unfortunately, after that season, he went back into the army and was unable to play. It was a tough conversation to have with Coach Edsall and not playing for 2 seasons was a horrible disappointment. Jeff helped out with the equipment staff made up of avid podcast listeners Larry Hare and Chris Stasaitis. Coach Edsall said if anything changed, he could always come back.The Triumphant return of Jeff Larson was his senior season, and everyone was thrilled to have him back. At the Florida Atlantic game when we dropped 60 points on them at the last game ever at Memorial Stadium, we could not have written a better storybook ending. Joe Villipiano catching the last touchdown pass in the stadium. Jeff took the last snap, Victory to close off that chapter. Coach Edsall was sightly influenced by friends who spelled out Larson's name on their chest in 0-degree weather. L-A-R-S-O-N standing in unison, pushing players and coaches to make his grand entrance like Rudy, which he did to a thunderous ovation. The podcast has become more of a therapy session because I am talking to guys I went into battle with 20 years ago. To hear their journeys after graduation, see such success, impressive careers and now having families of their own. It gives me hope that Ill figure it out one day and carve out a successful path... finally.

A heated debate ensues about the ESPN article on Bill Belichick being "voted off the island" by NFL owners in the coaching world. Mr. Wells believes Atlanta did have sincere interest and were spooked from pulling the trigger. Whether his age, longevity, willingness to work with a general manager and front office, Arthur Blank appeared to change his mind because Belichick felt the job was his after that second interview. I personally believe Robert Kraft fired the torpedo sinking Belichick's chances with the Falcons. Mr. Wells said that would be a shame after a 24-year relationship and oh, by the way, Bob Kraft isn't exactly a choir boy himself.
In my opinion, 8 Superbowl wins, 15 games away from breaking the NFL All-Time Wins record held by Don Shula, any team should be breaking the bank to hire Belichick. Mr. Wells thinks next year around Thanksgiving time, his name will resurface for numerous job openings. However, Belichick may enjoy being a television personality as displayed recently several times, maybe he decides not to return to the sidelines.
We go back to arguing about UConn after winning the National Championship in basketball. Not having huge NIL money, nobody does more with less. Back-to-back NCAA titles are even harder to do in today's world of the one and done's, along with the transfer portal. Coach Hurley deserves a huge part of the credit and in a Big East Conference that only had 3 teams selected into the tournament. The question becomes if UConn football can consistently turn the corner, with the strength of the basketball program, will UConn move into a Power 5 conference. The Big East television deal is a drop in the bucket, meanwhile Rutgers can go 6-6 in the Big 10 and receive 30 Million from their TV contract. Mr. Wells feels Syracuse, Boston College and Miami will not want UConn in the ACC. The state of Connecticut is running at a deficit, the model of basketball bringing in the key dollars will not work long term.

Three heavy hitters join the podcast this week for a crazy episode. Tommy Collins is back and starts off the show by reminding everyone I am in the Guinness Book Of World Records for having the .... Former UConn All Conference Linebacker/Defensive End Jamar Wilkens makes his first appearance. Former UConn basketball player and also having the pleasure of being my former college roommate, Michael Woodward also joins in.
Of course, we start by talking about UConn basketball winning the National Championship. Tommy believes that there is too much money in college football UConn is missing out on not to be in a conference.
Jamar believes Connecticut fans like being in the Big East, they want to play Seton Hall, St. Johns, Villanova, Georgetown and when we play teams like Houston, we don't draw.
Woody believes Coach Hurley is a mastermind and has a family who offers support. After a few rough years, for UConn to win back-to-back National Championships, sticking it to the Power 5 conferences is the way to go. Nobody has done more with less than UConn.
Tommy and Woody were instrumental in creating an NIL program for UConn. We are still in the early stages, and it is growing into something special.
Jamar talks about being a freshman and his first introduction to UConn football. Skip Holtz was the coach, Jamar was only 17 years old and was playing against grown men, some who were 23 to 25 years old. He said near the end of training camp, he finally figured it out and started dropping dudes all over. He played on every special teams and developed a reputation for having a reckless abandon. Jamar was an incredible linebacker his sophomore year, with a quick trigger and playing downhill. He was moved to defensive end for the good of the team and credits his successful transition due to his experience at linebacker. Knowing, understanding offensive schemes, figuring out what play was coming before the ball was snapped. As a DE, having 88 tackles was unheard of and he was also a top pass rusher. Jamar was a huge part of the 1998 UConn team that went 10-3, won the Atlantic 10 league title, won a playoff game against Hampton before losing to Georgia Southern. A spectacular career where he was an All Conference player.
Woody shares the story of his success after college. I remember visiting and practically living with him, while he was always working. He told me he wanted to retire at 40 and started off in the pharmaceutical sales while making his money work for him. Buying townhouses, other properties, renovating and renting them. He married UConn women's star Ashley Valley and they now have two teenage girls. Mike has always been ambitious, setting goals and likes to prove people wrong. He became an executive for the Wyndham hotel group and now is also Senior vice president for Focus Brands Franchise sales, along with business development.
A show full of funny stories and laughs, guys who get together a few times a year, allegedly I'll be invited to the next gathering. Jamar talks about his brother and his success playing pro basketball. They tried to get UConn to sign him, but they went in another direction. Now he is thriving in the NBA.
We discuss Tommy and Woody building strong, successful careers. Both always give back and Tommy went out of his way to help me with the podcast. Jamar took a little bit longer, but he too has found amazing success in his career. Football is still in his blood as he coaches his two kids.
Love these guys, non-stop laughter, entertainment, three great story tellers between Tommy, Jamar, and Woody. I have not talked with Jamar in 24 years, and I greatly appreciated his kind words. Knowing of my recent struggles, offering genuine support saying I look happy and healthy. I've learned it's never too late to reach out to an old friend or teammate. A guy I have not spoken to in 25 years, we were never close, and I had no idea what was coming my way. Jamal Lundy was a 4-year starter in football at UConn. A dominant player, he was quiet and led by example.
Overcoming adversity at a very young age, he lost his dad at 8 years old and his mother soon after. Jamal witnessed his grandfather die in front of him at 17 years old and spiritual guidance helped him.
Recruited by many schools, he wanted a full scholarship and a chance to play in the NFL. Randy Edsall and Mike Toop recruited Jamal and he became a top player. As a freshman, he started a few games in and never looked back. One of the few who started a game in all 4 years of his career.
Making All ECAC, Jamal signed with an agent and had aspirations of playing in the NFL. He trained all winter and waited on a call during draft day that never came. Depressed, frustrated, Jamal worked hard and chased the dream, he fell short as most of us do.
Not know what to do with the rest of his life, Jamal found a career in the military. He excelled, stood out because of his work ethic. His only regret was getting married, at 31, he wanted kids and felt time was running out.
After 6 years of marriage, Jamal finally got divorced. He met the love of his life and after 2 years of dating, walked the isle again. He has 2 kids with his first wife, his current wife has 4 kids from her first marriage, Jamal and his wife now have 2 kids of their own. He also helped raise his brothers kid after he died.
It was really special to see a smile on Jamal's face. He was cooking Ox tail for dinner. Jamal built a tremendous career in the military and is a wonderful family man, dedicated father. Never choose a permanent solution for a temporary problem. Words of Wisdom.
The baseball expert Peter Logue fills in with co-host Thomas Andrew "The Skull" Hartmann to talk about the Worcester Red Sox. Pete and I were great friends growing up. My grandparents lived by his, we would ride bikes terrorizing the town. While Andrew and I were in preschool together, raising hell during the day, Pete and I took charge after.
Pete was a utility guy and could play anywhere. He ended up at Le Moyne College where he became close friends with New Hartford Native Andy Weimer. Pete knows how challenging it is to play in early spring weather. He said the WooSox had a tough stretch of games because of the cold, along with the wind plays a huge factor in hitting, as well as pitching,
Skull talks about top prospect Romy Gonzalez being moved up to Boston after only a few games. Overall, Worcester has not been able to get the bats going and have been averaging 4 runs per game over their last 7.
Pete feels it will be difficult for every AAA team because there is constant movement with players. Andrew mentions whether its A to AA or AAA to the major league club, it all affects chemistry in the clubhouse.
The Red Sox losing 140-million-dollar man Trevor Story was a huge blow and Pete says this will be a totally different Red Sox team than we have seen, being a lifelong fan, he is hopeful players will fill that void. For the Worcester Rex Sox, Andrew explains that it is very early in the season. Pete mentions how they have played in difficult weather and being on the road most of the last 2 weeks. Worcester has a passionate fan base who will not quit on the Sox and cheer them on to turn things around. Plenty of time still! Frank talks Worcester Red Sox baseball struggling right now, 1-5 in their last 6 games. Top prospect Romy Gonzalez was called up to Boston and the team has good pitching overall . They have not been hot with the bats but it’s early in the season, if Worcester can take control of the series at Syracuse, they will move up a few places in the division.
Finally, we talk about Riley Gaines and her lawsuit against the NCAA to protect women’s sports. The NAIA ruled transgender athletes will not be allowed to compete in athletics, setting precedent for Riley Gaines to have a shot in court. Frank believes not enough women are supporting her and Mr. Wells said the NCAA will be disbanded in the next 5 years because they are a poor governing body.
Frank also wants to know because of inflation how people can rent an apartment and live a comfortable life on a 40K salary. If anyone has answers, please comment.

Mr Wells and I discuss the sensational interview we just had with Joe D’Ambrosio, the Voice of UConn athletics. He was kind enough to give us his time and surprisingly, he remembered me well. Mr Wells talks about my freshman year and how I adjusted. I said for 2 weeks I couldn’t get in the way of anyone. Then watching practice film, I had no idea what it was until OL coach Norries Wilson would be perplexed at how not only did I miss my block, but fell on the ground where the RB tripped over me . It was a masters class in football and I was coming from a GED program, I took a long time to catch up. We talk about my relationship with coach Edsall and I struggled early on. Randy said that I was not a great athlete. For me to have success, I have to play at 100 percent, if I played at 90 percent, I would get beat . That always stuck with me because some guys can give 75 percent effort and being so talented, they would succeed. Loved being able to interview Joe D, I admired and thought he was one of the best simply because of his versatility. Amazing stories and a top notch episode.
Probably, the most fun and entertaining episode we've ever had on our podcast. Co-Host Mr. Wells speaks softly and carries a big stick. Our special guest and Mr. Wells got after it occasionally. They disagreed a few times, in the end, we had an incredible discussion.However, I was able to interview the voice of UConn athletics for over 20 years, the man, the myth, the legend, himself......Mr. Joseph D'Ambrosio who is the voice of the University of Connecticut and playing a huge part in putting us on the map. Showing what a true pro Joe is, he remembered by number in college, along with a few memorable quotes and he knew I was the guy who was always going to be brutally honest and never duck a question. Preparation was a big part of his success. On television, he has producers in his ears throwing out suggestions on what to say. Working for WTIC 1080AM radio, Joe became the voice of the Huskies. Men's and Women's Basketball, Football, Baseball, then throwing hockey into the mix. Known as the VOICE OF THE HUSKIES, he is also doing Men's and Women's Lacrosse. Joe D is the definition of developing a hard work ethic and taking time to learn your craft. All you have to do is look at his resume, he is called all 8 National Championships between the UConn Men's and Women's Basketball teams. Joe was instrumental promoting UConn Football when we moved to Division 1 FBS and filling Rentschler Field. Firmly, I believe Joe knows where the Civil Conflict trophy is that was created to start a rivalry between Central Florida and UConn being in a new conference. Joe, when I can get subpoena power, I want answers! We had a fantastic interview, he gets along with all the coaches from Geno to Mora, Hurley, it takes a special personality because we all have egos. I was definitely not his favorite players, he witnessed me drop a bowl of ice cream in the Tupper ware of hot fudge the night before a game, making a mess all over. Junior and Senior years, Joe came to me for quotes, and I really appreciated the attention he gave a broken-down tackle.Joe was named Connecticut Sportscaster of the year 9 times by the National Sports Media Association, and is like fine wine, only getting better with age. I am beyond thank full, appreciative, grateful, and truly humbled Joe took time to come on our podcast. Knowing the show is a year old, he always is supportive, liking and sharing the podcast on Facebook. This is a different level. When a talent like Joe who is capable of doing anything, joins as a guest and was more than happy to come on the show... I asked him exactly one time and he got right back to me. Mr. Wells returns to co-host as we interview Coach David Weller from the Herkimer OGs basketball team of the ABA. Coach Weller took over an 0-5 team and immediately turned things around. He allowed players equal time to perform until he found his best starting 5 and would go 8 deep overall. The OG's had an amazing turn around, winning 4 games in a row under the guidance of Coach Weller. Ultimately, they finished 8-3 in games he coached, also winning a play in game to go to the play-offs in Binghamton.Coach Weller installed a press zone which trapped offenses and was very effective when used. The team put an Empasis on defense and was not going to allow high scoring matchups. Coach Weller admitted he was not going to teach any of his players techniques they didn't already know, but he put them in the best position to succeed and that us why the season turned around.David credits his ownership group and several people who had an impact on his life with helping to make a decision to take the job coaching the OG's. He is here to stay and already recruiting some new talent. A good coach who has an outstanding attitude and wants to build something special with the Herkimer OG's.After talking OG basketball, Mr. Wells, Coach Weller and I make our picks out of the sweet 16. Chris Bellamy joins the show and shares a spectacular journey leading to a successful career. I did not know what I was getting into before our interview and at the end, I left with a smile on my face.
Chris hails from "Hard Hitten" New Britan, Connecticut, which the best podcast host in the universe thought was a white-collar city. I could not have been more wrong; Chris grew up in one of the toughest places in Connecticut.
Gangs were prominent and Chris joined in early before being arrested at 12 years old. This led to a stint in Juvenile detention where he made a decision to change his life. A mentor took notice of Chris being a dynamic athlete and encouraged him to play sports. He saw potential in football because there were more scholarship opportunities.
His senior year, a new offensive coordinator showcased Chris. Offers from Hawaii, South Carolina, and Auburn followed. Who wouldn't want a 6'2 athlete with potential to play multiple positions? Denauld Brown recruited Chris at UConn, as he waited on eligibility from the NCAA. It came late, a day after National signing day!
Coach Brown told Chris early on in the recruiting process they were leaving a scholarship open. It was loyalty which brought him to UConn, along with being close to home. Chris had a young daughter and was a dedicated father.
Blue collar work ethic, running back coach Terry Richardson and a positive attitude defined his time at UConn. Chris credits senior starting running back Taber Small for taking him under his wing. Taber made a huge impact on learning the different responsibilities of the position.
Nobody had to overcome more obstacles and adversity than Chris Bellamy. Put in an extremely talented group, he did not see the field immediately. It becomes heart breaking because football becomes our identity, as I know all too well. Chris had a rough stretch where he suffered through depression and even considered transferring.
In 2003 and 2004, we witnessed how special of a player Chris was. After being moved to wide receiver, injuries put him right back in the backfield where he finally received his chance to shine. He was instrumental in 2003 as the team went 9-3. In 2004, first year in the Big East, Chris played a huge role in leading UConn to an 8-4 record and Motor City Bowl, which was our first bowl ever. He ended his career rushing for 87 yards and a touchdown destroying Toledo.
After college, Chris was interested in learning how to manage money and provide a great life for his family. Self-taught, he became a Mortgage Broker, got a license to sell insurance and with his strong work ethic, he grew his portfolio.
These days, Chris built an incredible career working for TEKsystems as a Marketplace Diversity Leader. Living in Boston with a wife and young son, Chris still focuses on giving back by starting a program to teach kids how to be IT professionals. He wants people to have access, raise awareness and do the best he can for everybody he can because that was what was done for him.
Chris has a podcast, much better than mine, called All Black Men Need Therapy, which started in 2020. His platform exists in 143 countries that unpack past and present issues affecting black men's mental health, along with well-being. Chris and his brothers engage in honest, vulnerable dialogue surrounding the complexities of life as black men. They are committed to helping black men grow comfortable having difficult conversations while encouraging them to strive daily to become the best version of themselves. Chris speaks all over the country, most recently at Morehouse College and the Aspen Challenge, committed to making a difference.
Coach Randy Edsall was tough, we thought he just didn't like us. It was because coach knew life would hit tougher and he taught us to overcome adversity. Coach said play every play like it's the last one you will ever play. We all apply that philosophy to this day and are grateful for the impact coach had on our lives.

Karen Read was watching friends turn on her, flip flopping at court hearings while innocent until proven guilty may as well not exist. Karen and boyfriend Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe met friends for drinks at The Waterfall bar in January 2022. After, they went to a party at Brian Alberts house, another police officer. Karen didn't see him enter the because of the show but called his phone, several times, no answer and she assumed his got in okay.
After several hours of not hearing from him, she contacted "friend" Jen McCabe and they went driving to search for John. Hours passed since she dropped him off and John was in grave danger. Karen performed mouth to mouth, asked for blankets to warm him, nurses were in the Albert home and were contributing what they could.
EMTs rushed John to Good Samaritan Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:50am from hypothermia. HOWEVER, John had gashes on his arm that looked like a dog attacked. Also, blunt force trauma to the back of the head was pictured in photos
The Prosecution theory was Karen and John has been arguing at the Waterfall and Karen Read backed into him purposefully after dropping him off.
Karen Read needed medical attention because she was beside herself, she didn't want to leave picturing in her head life without John.
Aidian Kearny broke this case open for the defense because he is one of the few people who cares about the truth and Justice for John O'Keefe. Also known as "Turtleboy", this case did not pass the smell test.
Tutrtleboy found Lucky Loughran who has worked for the Canton DPW for many years. The Commonwealth's theory is John O'Keeffe never entered the house and Karen Read ran him over. Lucky said he did not see a body at 12;30pm or when he plowed at 2:30am, very little show was on the ground and a body would most be visible.
The McCabe's and Alberts denied being friends, denied knowing each other and pictures posted were not with their kids. I've never seen such careless, egregious, lying for the purpose of allegedly covering up a murder. There are videos and wedding pictures galore, along with recent pictures of their kids posing together.
Chris Albert's son Colin Albert did not get along with John O'Keefe. Karen Read missed John run into the house because it was cold outside. Former Bridgewater State football player and others, allegedly attacked O'Keefe , including Sicking their German Sheppard Cloe on him, unfortunately causing significant injuries, then dragged his lifeless body into the snow, allowing him to succumb to hypothermia hours later.
Turtleboy smelled a rat. investigated, he is the only reason this case gained national notoriety and a federal investigation is ongoing to show the incompetence of Meatball Morrissey, along with the Canton Police Department.
Turtleboy organized rally's at each hearing, a rolling rally to show where everything took place in Canton. Despite being arrested on counts of federal witness intimidation; Aidan knows the first amendment protects him. He doesn't deny making mistakes, didn't he deserve to go to jail for 60 days because a mentally unstable jilted lover was used by the police to put him away. Aidan exposed the truth and because Lindsey Gaetani is a liar who needs help Turtleboy is the main reason this case was reported on, he is also the reason hundreds of thousands of people support him, believe in him, and corruption in Canton will be catastrophic. Yuri Bukaki is sweating. Michael Proctor is being investigated by the federal government for his conduct. Meatball Morrissy and Ken Mello, please get in some cardio. I am fat and at least started mine!

He feels each conference has to step up to put in rules for when this happens and get the visiting team off safely.
We discuss the recent court ruling that NIL deals can be used in recruiting. Frank thinks the NCAA dropped the ball from the start by not putting a policy in place to regulate NILs. I brought up title 9 being an issue because male athletes are receiving more money and the majority of NIL deals to begin with. Mr. Wells believes all conference commissioners will meet down the road to break away from the NCAA all together because it's an obsolete, useless organization.
The UFL starting up, Frank thinks spring football is a mistake. He said if the NFL wants a true developmental league, it needs to run in the fall, parallel to an NFL season. This way teams who have needs or injuries can sign players, already in game shape who are ready to contribute, play games on Tuesday nights. Mr. Wells feels football is the most popular sport, people will watch whenever they can, and a spring league could work if given several years to establish.

A unexpected treat as former Cornell offensive coordinator Joe Villipiano returns after his first show was a massive success. This time he brings a friend, Jeremy Bandy who is the head coach of Worcester Academy. Joe and Jeremy worked together for several years at Harvard and are good friends along with being outstanding coaches.
Jeremy loves being back in Worcester and its where he met his wife. After being an offensive line coach at the college level for years, he jumped at the opportunity to be a head coach and return to Worcester. A big personality and a fun guy, he has turned the program around at Worcester Academy. The administration is supporting the team and investing 25 million dollars in facilities.
Joe's podcast was such a success I had to bring him on again. Taking care of 3 kids, he was gracious enough to give us his time. We talked about being a coordinator and managing a staff along with players. Jeremy and Joe said when they were at Harvard, the staff was family and it made a difference because the kids believed in them.
Jeremy was able to put together an excellent staff and as a first-time head coach is doing great. Both Joe and Jeremy paid their dues. Started from the bottom and had career advancement, coached undefeated powerful teams at Harvard. They achieved success and earned promotions.
I have known Joe 20 years now which is crazy to say, and I feel like I have known Bandy forever because I heard so much about him. Two of the best football coaches around, Jeremy is one of the best offensive line coaches in the country. Now he is also the offensive coordinator and teaches a class at Worcester Academy. Joe is brilliant and has a special offensive mind. Not like other coordinators who run their system regardless of if the kids are capable. Joe analyzed his personnel and developed an offense to put his players in the best position to succeed. He never asked them to do something they were not capable of. Bandy and Joe are exceptional play callers because they are highly intelligent, able to think on their feet or make adjustments.
Jeremy has done a spectacular job developing players. He can work with them young and really coach them from the ground up. Both are regarded as top recruiters, Jeremy increased the team at Worcester Academy from 20 kids when he arrived up to 45 now. If you are a top athlete in Worcester and want to go to an FCS or FBS college, send film and visit Jeremy. He has placed kids all over to top universities for athletics and academics because Worcester Academy is a prestigious institution.
Nobody worked harder than Joe, as a walk on at UConn, he played as a freshman. He was respected for his toughness and love for the game. I think he has one of the best offensive minds in the game. Cornell led the country in 1st downs, along with time of possession. Whatever school hires him next will be bringing in a great coach, an even better person and a guy who will make a difference.
Jeremy and Joe have impeccable reputations in the coaching world not only because of the success they have, but because they are amazing people. It's rare that nobody says a bad word about them and always say they love them. Pretty much every coach has terrible words to say about me! What a fun episode with two guys who can talk football and make you laugh until you cry. We definitely will do more with them in the future. The huge news of Jim Harbaugh going back to the NFL with the LA Chargers was surprising, Frank thinks it was a great hire and a splash needed to make waves. The Commanders bringing in Dallas defensive coordinator Dan Quinn should bring stability to a franchise that has been lacking such. With Eric Bieniemy staying on staff to run the offense and the 2nd pick in the draft, Washington has optimism. Nobody expected Baltimore to hold the Chiefs to 17 points and lost at home. Most thought the Lions had the game won in the third quarter before San Francisco fought back. Next week, several guests will be on to make their Superbowl predictions!
Probably one of the most interesting guests we have ever had, John Myers from Entertaiment 1 Presents joins the show. Growing up in the small town of Galway, John went right into the music industry out of high school. Starting out traveling with a band working in lighting, he found a true passion for music. Moving to Syracuse, then out to Springfield, he started booking and promoting cover bands in night clubs. Having a stint in Boston, and Amherst where he kept his business going while running his own club. Dedication, with a tremendous work ethic, John grew his business beyond New England. He developed a great reputation and started booking concerts. Everyone came to him and if you attended a concert in the 80's, there is a good chance John was involved. Eventually, he ran a costume business after somebody calling to ask if he could get an Easter Bunny costume. He bought costumes like Barney the Purple Dinosaur and rented them for birthday parties. Finally, having enough of the music industry, he saw grunge, along with Alternative bands like Nirvana and Green Day grow in popularity over rock n roll, John got out. Moving back to Hudson Falls where he started Entertainment 1 Presents, promoting concerts throughout the Capital Region, along with Massachusetts. John shares his thoughts on the music industry today and explains why the 80's were so special. I could have talked to him for two hours, not knowing anythng about music, it was a fun interview. Long life friends Matt Talerico, Dominic Tripp and Matt Giffune come on the show to relive fun memories of our time playing basketball growing up. Dom and Giffune make their second appearance on the podcast, while Matt Talerico joins to discuss our 1996 JV Basketball Tri Valley League Championship team. We go over our spring break trip to Myrtle Beach in 1994 when I was officially accepted into the group after they had a long discussion and close vote amongst the other members. I was recruited when Dom watched a few of my AAU.... no, excuse me, CYO basketball games and became the missing link to our 1996 squad. The four of us were starters, along with Dan Circelli at shooting guard and legendary coach Art Williams led us on a championship run. We were loaded with Brian Basloe, Mike Leist, Nick Matt, brothers Aaron and Josh Evans. Anibal Abdella, Jason Femia, Dave Bauer and Steve Shaw rounding out a dominant unit. Matt Talerico credits our success to the amazing talent we had. Dom believes coach Art Williams ran an offense geared to put his talent in the best position to succeed. Matt Giffune thinks everyone knew their role and playing together year-round helped us develop into a true team. I felt our toughness set us apart from the rest of the league. Dom, Giffune and Matt thought our work ethic, along with fierce competitiveness truly made the difference. Frank Cristiano, avid listener of the podcast joins the show. Owner of Tony's Pizza and Fat Katz Comedy Club in Washington Mills, just outside of New Hartford, he has an entrepreneurial spirit. Frank has an incredible work ethic he learned from his father Tony. He also played college football at Arizona State before transferring to Cortland and starting on the offensive line. Frank coached and has been a mentor to me for my entire life, always providing sound advice to guide me in the right direction. At New Hartford, Frank coached from 1992 until 2014 starting off under legendary coach Don Edick. We discuss the 2008 team that won a sectional championship and was the first to make it to the state play-offs in school history. I witnessed the best coaching performance ever as Frank was the offensive, defensive, and special teams coordinator doing a masterful job. Attending St John's Prep in Worcester, Tim played some hockey before attending Fordham University as a Quarterback, building character, intergrity, toughness and instilling hard work brought up by his family with three brothers, along with a sister. Tim found a calling in politics servinging as a member of the Worcester City Council before getting elected as Mayor before becoming Lieutenant Governor.
Over the last 10 years Tim became President of the Chamber of Coommerce, seen the success grow of the Worester Railers Hockey Team and now with the Worcester Red Sox. Tim has never been afraid of a challenge or a fight and was committed to having a new field at Polar Park constructed. Not deterred by COVID, construction broke ground and the season began on 2021. Former Holy Cross Basketball Star Ernie Floyd joins the show to talk about UNITY Radio and Pride pro. Ernie always had support growing up which has led him to be mentors to young people and work for non-profits raising money. Ernie has a lot going on covering sports in Worcester, which often get overlooked. Coming from a large family, we played Nintendo and rode bikes together. His first memory of meeting me was when I fell off my bike and suffered my first of many concussions. Jason talks about struggling in high school before taking a different path. He started a business in 10th grade then attend college at MVCC, HCCC, and Clinton CC. Jason was married in 2007 and talks about starting his own family with 2 children. Having and Entrepreneural spirit, he owns 3 businesses and is a devoted father.
We take a deep dive into finding our faith and the journey to being saved. Nick, Riley, Doe and the returning Zach Arnold discuss Redeemer church. Nick and Doe went to high school together, were not close, yet found a connection on the path of being saved. Riley grew up out of state, played soccer at University of New Hampshire where he met his future wife before moving to upstate New York. Zach talks about the importance of having such a strong community and how the group was formed. You can feel the love, passion, enthusiasm, joy and the guys have for the church. All felt a missing piece in their lives on a path of salvation and were saved by the Redeemer church. Doe talks about how he gained a better understanding of the bible, Nick explains how it was written for children to read but can be complex and take time to truly understand. Zach credits the people, his community more than anything for saving him. At his lowest point, attending church,he found a family who cares and loves him. Most impressive is they get together every week to discuss the bible, as well as support each other in their struggles. An incredible episode learning about each persons experience being saved, why their faith continues to grow and feeling a special happiness. Doe closes out the episode with a remarkable, touching musical performance that is can't miss.
The Master Connector Steve Spiro himself joins the show to recount on my recent health scare and harrowing recovery. I open up about experiencing terrible pain from losing girlfriend Kelly and best friend Josh in succession, back-to-back. My actions and behavior were erractic, sepsis spread in my blood which caused me to be a different person. Kelly, Josh, my family intervened and I refused to listen, turning down help. Losing hope, not caring, giving up, my health deteriorated, and I was found unresponsive. Emergency surgery, amputating my foot saved my life. Was it a life worth saving? Steve talks about being at the bottom in a dark place, focusing on yourself, making changes, getting better before even starting to fix relationships. Feeling sorry for yourself for having a foot amputated or feeling blessed to be alive and receiving a second chance. The most important people in my life, did they care, were they concerned to check on me after 3 surgeries and a month in the hospital? I wasn't worth it and thats a devasting feeling knowing I drove them away being accountable for the way I treated the people Ioved most. Steve guides me through developing a positive outlook, setting small goals, knowing how to repent. I pray I can show I learned from my experience, I pray that I can show I changed and most importantly, I pray I can get a chance to start over with the people I selfishly hurt. A second chance to make amends for a mountain of mistakes.
Physician's Assistant Zach Arnold joins the show offering a unique perspective working on my case in the hospital. Zach has been on an incredible journey starting in Ohio where he first had an interest in psychology. A natural athlete, Zach had a love for basketball and was able to play on the regional campus team at Kent State University. Studying to work in Aviation, Zach switched course dramatically and went to PA school at Baldwin Wallace. Having a genuine care for his patients, Zach relies on his faith in God to guide him. Zach maintains a healthy work/life balance and developed a strong relationship with the Redeemer church which has provided support.
Individual Analytics CEO Nick Kolar comes on to talk with Steve about an extended absence and what he plans to do different. Nick identifies Steve having an appreciation for his brother Matt and how he stepped up to help, as well as communicate with his friends. They discuss Steve's parents and how much he has put them through, along with how lucky he is to have them. Time will tell if Steve will do what he says, Nick believes he has a good plan and outlook, now he has to execute it.

Steve sits down with his future niece Gracie to get to know her. Gracie talks about being in college, starting at SUNY Buffalo, transferring to Hudson Valley and finishing at Saint Rose in the fall. Steve asks why she has a love of children and wanting to work in early childhood education. Gracie believes its ok for Steve to move in with Kelly because he is older, so the timeline can be faster. She is eager to see her aunt Kelly get married, and is hopeful it will happen in the near future.
Papi Knox of Saratoga joins Steve in a unique episode to discuss an exceptionally difficult month with now sadly ex-girlfriend Kelly Houghtaling. Knox takes charge as host to lead the interview, being objective and showing Steve points from a different perspective. Steve shares huge regrets on losing two relationships with very important people. Reckless decisions that resulted in major consequences. Knox paints a picture from start to finish and asks tough questions for deeper explanations. He keeps a positive mindset and views this as an opportunity for Steve to not talk about making progress, but putting in the actual work to grow. Recapping a rollercoaster week of ups and downs as Steve struggles to watch Kelly get hurt. Losing love is never easy, Knox shares how Steve could have handled things differently, talking about his own experiences with women. Steve not being as versed played a significant role in handling situations poorly which were easily preventable. Not accepting defeat and refusing to quit, Steve isn't scared to fight for happiness which he experienced with Kelly and will show actions speak louder than words. Steve talks about losing the love of his life Kelly Houghtaling and not being able to come back from it. Steve was disrespectful to Jack and Sue, Kelly's parents and they don't want to forgive him. Steve lost Kelly, housing, and all hope in 24 hours. Josh has been the best friend Steve has had in years, he screwed that up. Josh provided sound advice, Steve didn't listen and lost his best friend, podcast partner. A miscommunication over a new years engagement humiliated Steve and he overreacted by creating a story to make Kellys sister Sara look bad. Steve reached out to Katie because he was struggling, Kelly gave Katies number to Steve to call when he he needed help. Everything went wrong and Steve has lost the love of his life. He is begging for forgiveness and a second chance. Please dont give up on Steve.
