I speak with Brad Loewen, host of Beyond the Price, exploring Bitcoin adoption in East Asia.
Brad and I both attended the Bitcoin Asia conference in Hong Kong recently, organised by BTC Inc, the same company behind Bitcoin Miami, Bitcoin Amsterdam, Bitcoin Magazine, along with their investment arm UTXO Management.
Now it was clear that there would be some ordinal-related discussions at the conference which I wanted to verify for myself, however I was not expecting the sheer degree of emphasis on these, as well as the overall VC, compliance & KYC, public mining, and financial services direction of the conference.
As we explore, I have come to question BTC Inc's motivations, their choice of sponsors and programming, and their commitment to Bitcoin as freedom and privacy tech.
Bitcoin is resilient and anti-fragile, but I can’t help but wonder if this conference and the so-called Bitcoin Magazine are not part of a broader attack that uses the affinity of the Bitcoin brand to nullify the ongoing imperative for sound money, self-custody, decentralisation, and self-sovereignty.

In this episode I talk with Christian Lewe from Blockstream Research. Christian is working on Simplicity, a more robust programming language designed as an alternative to Bitcoin Script.
To own Bitcoin is to be able to spend it, and the way we currently do this is with Bitcoin Script which has challenges and limitations that means it can be very unforgiving to work with, and it limits more complex transactions and arrangements because you cannot formally verify what will actually happen.
Simplicity seeks to fix this.
The project that has been in the works for over ten years and has been described by Adam Back as “the last soft fork”. There is some technical nuance to this statement, but as Christian shares, enabling simplicity could bypass a lot of the contentious soft fork discussions about things like covenants as this functionality is possible with Simplicity.
We talk about the proof of work and low time preference of Simplicity, as well as the plans to launch on the Liquid testnet and mainnet to validate the project through actual financial use before an eventual proposal to bring it into Bitcoin.

KiwiSaver is the voluntary retirement savings scheme for New Zealand and Kōura Wealth offers a Carbon Neutral Crypto Fund KiwiSaver product, which is Bitcoin only.
This is a way for everyday kiwis to get some kind of Bitcoin exposure with government and employer matched contributions and tax benefits.
New Zealand was very late to the game with retirement savings schemes and the impact of this is beginning to be felt with very low savings, and old-age poverty issues.

In this episode I talk with Brett Scott, author of The Heretic’s Guide to Global Finance and Cloudmoney: Cash, Cards, Crypto and the War for our Wallets.
He also runs the substack Altered States of Monetary Consciousness.
Brett does a lot of work supporting the protection of physical cash, and I reached out to him about an article he wrote “The War On Informality” which explores the implication of financial surveillance by credit cards and private banks.
This is a thought-provoking episode. We explore the Commodity Theory of Money vs Credit Theory of Money, power dynamics, the importance of cash, and more. Brett offers some interesting critiques of certain Bitcoin narratives and provides some alternative frameworks for looking at how money works.
In particular the Credit Theory of Money sent me down some rabbit holes thinking about how money comes into being as a future obligation and how this theory would map on to Bitcoin, which has cemented my thoughts around the critical role of Bitcoin mining and energy use where the underlying Bitcoin and electrical power are both required to be spent to participate in the network (I hope to explore this in future episodes).
Please have a listen and make up your own mind. Brett has been involved in the Bitcoin world for a long time and I think his arguments and critiques are worth interrogating.

Andrew L. Wilson is an Author and Professor of History of Christianity as well as host of The Disentanglement Podcast, exploring privacy tech and the surveillance state.

Not soon after we spoke, James shared a clip that went viral of the governor talking frankly about the exorbitant privilege of money printing that the central banks and governments have.

Jimmy shares how the project came about and his vision for it, as well as the Bitcoin merchant situation in Switzerland including the city of Lugano which has over 300 merchants accepting Bitcoin already.

The New Zealand Initiative is a policy think tank conducting independent research on a wide range of issues. They interface with policymakers across the political spectrum, the business community, media, academics, and the public.
Matthew wrote a report titled “Paving the Wave: Learning from New Zealand past to Build a Better Future.” The report explores how the country effectively tackled infrastructure projects in the past, and offers guidance on how the country can rediscover this talent.

Today I talk with Dash, a Bitcoiner based in Japan.
Dash is part of the Tokyo Citadel Group, who I was able to meet when I was travelling through Japan recently.
My impression from the Tokyo Citadel was that there was real interest in privacy, security, and the potential threats that Bitcoiners personally face from the nation state. Now this is not unfounded, and we have seen people being detained over things like coinjoins and through chain analysis. But I wanted to understand this perspective more and compare it with the situation in New Zealand.
Importantly we talk about how freedom tech, including Bitcoin, can help alleviate some these risks, and I think there is a lot we can learn here.

Today I talk with Ben Jarvie. Ben is a Bitcoiner working for Amber App, a Bitcoin-only exchange, and he is also a writer.
In this episode we talk about a piece that Ben wrote for Bitcoin magazine titled "New Zealand's Past, Pūtea, and Future: CBDC vs Bitcoin".
In this article Ben illustrates a fascinating perspective on the contentious relationship between state & centralised money, and the Māori people of New Zealand.
The very existence of a singular undemocratic Reserve Bank of New Zealand goes against the principles laid out in the Treaty of Waitangi for self-determination, though this is conveniently ignored to instead focus on a seemingly unending culture war that sees the Reserve Bank co-opting Māori imagery and symbols of guardianship whilst simultaneously engineering a recession.
More broadly the article outlines how New Zealand has always been at the mercy of overseas banks and the monetary policy of the crown and we are still paying for this today.
Ben and I explore various avenues of discussion here, and we arrive at a place that sees Bitcoin present an opportunity for the empowerment and self-sovereignty of not only Māori communities but all of New Zealand.

I talk with Glen Herud, the founder of Happy Cow Milk Company. Glen is focussed on decentralised dairy farming, where individual farmers are able to process and pasteurise their milk themselves using Glen's hardware specs, and connect in with a platform for supply and distribution of dairy products directly to businesses and consumers.
In New Zealand the existing dairy industry is highly centralised and export focussed often at the expense of the local market. Though Happy Cow Milk Company is not specifically a Bitcoin business, by the end of this conversation I found many parallels with Bitcoin-thinking and the broader themes of transformation, authenticity, and change that is emerging globally. Happy Cow Milk Company is unique in its approach that seeks to decentralise, build alternative supply chains, and reroute around legacy systems to build something better.
